Deuteronomy Chapter 24

Deuteronomy 24

1When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house.

2And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man’s wife.

3And if the latter husband hate her, and write her a bill of divorcement, and giveth it in her hand, and sendeth her out of his house; or if the latter husband die, which took her to be his wife;

4Her former husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is defiled; for that is abomination before the LORD: and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.

5When a man hath taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war, neither shall he be charged with any business: but he shall be free at home one year, and shall cheer up his wife which he hath taken.

6No man shall take the nether or the upper millstone to pledge: for he taketh a man’s life to pledge.

7If a man be found stealing any of his brethren of the children of Israel, and maketh merchandise of him, or selleth him; then that thief shall die; and thou shalt put evil away from among you.

8Take heed in the plague of leprosy, that thou observe diligently, and do according to all that the priests the Levites shall teach you: as I commanded them, so ye shall observe to do.

9Remember what the LORD thy God did unto Miriam by the way, after that ye were come forth out of Egypt.

10When thou dost lend thy brother any thing, thou shalt not go into his house to fetch his pledge.

11Thou shalt stand abroad, and the man to whom thou dost lend shall bring out the pledge abroad unto thee.

12And if the man be poor, thou shalt not sleep with his pledge:

13In any case thou shalt deliver him the pledge again when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his own raiment, and bless thee: and it shall be righteousness unto thee before the LORD thy God.

14Thou shalt not oppress an hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he be of thy brethren, or of thy strangers that are in thy land within thy gates:

15At his day thou shalt give him his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and setteth his heart upon it: lest he cry against thee unto the LORD, and it be sin unto thee.

16The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin.

17Thou shalt not pervert the judgment of the stranger, nor of the fatherless; nor take a widow’s raiment to pledge:

18But thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in Egypt, and the LORD thy God redeemed thee thence: therefore I command thee to do this thing.

19When thou cuttest down thine harvest in thy field, and hast forgot a sheaf in the field, thou shalt not go again to fetch it: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow: that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hands.

20When thou beatest thine olive tree, thou shalt not go over the boughs again: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow.

21When thou gatherest the grapes of thy vineyard, thou shalt not glean it afterward: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow.

22And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt: therefore I command thee to do this thing.

  1. We should not look down on sinners to the extent of condemnation, for we too were once as they are. We should love them, but hate the sin and do all we can to help them out of it.

  2. 18 But thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in Egypt, and the LORD thy God redeemed thee thence: therefore I command thee to do this thing.

It should be easy to help others, forgive others, and give to others. We were all once bondman in Egypt but the Lord redeemed each of us.

  3. A High And Holy Calling
    Dt 24:5

What a great idea! God’s idea. For one year, a new husband is to stay home and bring happiness to his wife. The Hebrew word for happiness can also be translated as “bliss”. These laws indicate that God holds high the goal of maital bliss. Our modern lifestyle does not accomodate such a law, but following the spirit of the law means that we will see marriage as sacred. We choose to honor it, gaurd it, nurture it. A marriage lived out under the awareness that it is sacred looks different. It calls us to more- more than mundane, ordinary or “sitcom” marriage. To see marriage as sacred means we have a calling -a vacation- to pray, risk, create, struggle, sacrifice… and to hug, listen, and laugh a lot. It is some of the most important work in the kingdom.

  4. 16The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin.

Accountability was established by God for the church. Be ye Holy for I am Holy.

  5. v19 NIV When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not go back to get it. Leave it for the alien, the fatherless and the widow, so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.

    God repays generosity!

  6. “17Thou shalt not pervert the judgment of the stranger, nor of the fatherless; …”

Many times people have a tendancy to allow their personal thoughts and feelings to effect the way they feel about something or someone else. If we take our personal feelings out of our thought process and seek God’s face through reading His word, we would see the real truth, and make better decisions. We must remember we were all strangers at one time, but God….

  7. This end of this chapter spoke to me about sharing your blessings. We shouldn’t have the ME, ME, ME and nothing for you attitude; but, rather a giving sharing one. Thank you Lord because we are truly a blessed people.

  8. 14Thou shalt not oppress an hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he be of thy brethren, or of thy strangers that are in thy land within thy gates:

How different will our economy be if we were to base ALL our businesses upon the word of the Lord. How much gratitude will there be in the hearts of employees if they were treated like an asset & not a commodity to be thrown out when ever the numbers need adjusting. How different will it be if we would not forget where the Lord took us out of and help our fellow men reach their goals.

I give you a new command. Love one another. You must love one another, just as I have loved you.
    John 13:34

  9. Whether we be a slave or a freeman it is commanded that we serve the lord.In many countries slavery still exist. I cannot find in the Bible where slavery is unlawful. If we owe someone money then we can work off our debt as a bondsman or slave. We are all slaves to the world economy. But we need to treat free men or slave equal in the eyes of God!

  10. God had designed a system that would take care of the poor. They were allowed to go into a field that had already been harvested and could gather from what was left-this way eveyone was able to eat and provide for themselves even though they may not have been a land owner themselves.

I believe this system allowed the poor dignity because they also had to do some of the labor.

  11. GOD reminds us time and time again to heed to His words…To obey.
We must be thoughtful of others, and do the right thing. That the land may not be defiled with sin, and evil.
It’s up to us choose HIS Blessings, and not curses. Life everlasting and not death.

  12. Vs. 19-21 Talks about if they left their sheaf in the field, not to go get it back; if they beat their olive trees, not to go over the boughs again: or if they gathered their grapes in the vineyard, not to glean it afterward, but they we to leave the rest for the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow. When they did these things vs. 19 says, “….. that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hands.”

I believe this is why God has blessed the work at POFW because we reach out to the poor, needed, stranger, fatherless, and widows in their afflctions. I Thank God for our church and it’s vision and burden for the city of Fort Worth.

  13. THE SAFETY OF OBEDIENCE

8 Take heed in the plague of leprosy, that thou observe diligently, and do according to all that the priests the Levites shall teach you: as I commanded them, so ye shall observe to do.
9 Remember what the LORD thy God did unto Miriam by the way, after that ye were come forth out of Egypt.

I could not and do not want to imagine living my life in disobedience to the man of GOD who is in authority over me. We see many who are spiritually sick and unable to function in their calling because of disobedience to Spiritual Authority.

Statements like; “I don’t like that is wrong”, “Thats just a personal conviction”, “Thats old fashion”, and similar statements are simply personal justifications of personal rebellion.

    Be CARE full to obey!

    iPray

  14. 22And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt: therefore I command thee to do this thing.

  15. 4Her former husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is defiled; for that is abomination before the LORD: and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.

I am reminded of the story of Cain and Abel. After the murder of Abel, God spoke to Cain asking where is his brother. He said his blood cries out from the earth. He told him that it would be cursed because it receives his blood.

Our actions don’t just effect the people around us. It also effects the earth.

Fort Worth needs us to do what is right. Our actions will heal the land.

If my people…. Then will I hear from heaven and heal their land

  16. In this scripture, it is clear how God cares for the poor, widow, and the fstherless. We should always treat one another with love, never taking advantage of those who are servants.

***Be Church, ipray, iwork, igive, ireap***
    Mark A. Ridenour

  17. V.16 The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: EVERY MAN SHALL BE PUT TO DEATH FOR HIS OWN SIN. I am so Thankful for the Blood of the lamb! The Curse has been broken!!!!

  18. Those first few verses remind me of when Jacob married Leah under the pretense that it was Rachel. That next morning when he woke and found it was Leah instead, he was unhappy but did not divorce her. God hates divorce and taught that it was for the hardness of the hearts of the Jews that the option of divorce was ever put on the table. Jacob, even for all his faults, chose to not put away Leah and from her received more children than from his beloved Rachel (including the son Judah, from whom came Christ.) We may not always like what ends up in our lives, especially when it seems to have come under false pretense, but we must be careful what circumstances we choose to “divorce”; God may just bring to pass some of our greatest blessings out of what we would have not chosen for ourselves.

  19. 19When thou cuttest down thine harvest in thy field, and hast forgot a sheaf in the field, thou shalt not go again to fetch it: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow: that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hands.

God’s provision for us may come from the “left overs” from someone else’s gleaning, but it doesn’t matter. He said He would supply our needs, and if He has to use something discard from another to meet th tneed, so be it.

  20. 13In any case thou shalt deliver him the pledge again when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his own raiment, and bless thee: and it shall be righteousness unto thee before the LORD thy God.
even when you dont have it to give, give God what is his, and he will give itt back to you.

  21. This chapter illustrates remembrance. “But thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in Egypt, and the LORD thy God redeemed thee thence: therefore I command thee to do this thing.” We must remember the Lord’s Blood was shed for our redemption. May the good Lord bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  22. Obey the commands of God!!!

  23. 5When a man hath taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war, neither shall he be charged with any business: but he shall be free at home one year, and shall cheer up his wife which he hath taken.

What an Old Testament law! If this law was still practiced in our generation the percentage of young adults getting married in the U.S. would sky rocket!

Unfortunately this is not really a feasible option for newly-weds. However, couples that are newly married should spend each year valuing the time that they have together and make the most of it.

  24. We must all remember to take care of the fatherless, widdows, and the strangers in this land.
