Ecclesiastes 6

1 A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.

If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.

For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.

Moreover he hath not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this hath more rest than the other.

Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place?

All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.

For what hath the wise more than the fool? what hath the poor, that knoweth to walk before the living?

Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also vanity and vexation of spirit.

10 That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.

11 Seeing there be many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?

12 For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?

  1. How great is our GOD? What a great read and thought, see the importance of letting God fill our soul with his spirit. Whatever we do in life the most important part is not how much money we make, how much power we possess, whether we are a senator, a politician or whoever we are. The most important part of life is to live for GOD and let him be the center of our life. All else is vanity!!!!

  2. ILove to eat the Word

“Everything is Vain…Except the Holy Ghost”

The word “vain” comes from the following Hebrew word,
    01892
    הֶבֶל hebel
    Noun Masculine heh’bel
    from (01891)
or (rarely in the abs.) habel {hab-ale’}; from ; emptiness or vanity; figuratively, something transitory and unsatisfactory; often used as an adverb:–X altogether, vain, vanity.
    vapour, breath
    breath, vapour
    vanity (fig.) adv
    vainly

This word means empty, unsatisfied, a lack of inspiration.

Honestly, even though we have received the Holy Ghost, sometimes we feel empty just like Solomon when he wrote this little proverb. Most of the time when we feel like this we can trace it back to carnality. The more we allow the flesh to take over, the more vanity sets in and the more empty we feel.

Lets put vanity behind us and push forward!

  3. WHY SPEND YOUR LIFE WORKING ONLY FOR SELF?

7 All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.

    MSG
    7 We work to feed our appetites;
    Meanwhile our souls go hungry.

Over the years of Leading GOD’s people I have witnessed this scenario several times. Families chasing more pay, bigger homes, faster cars and more money somewhere else. Failing to consider the toll or hardship that is being placed on their own soul, the spiritual man will be famished, malnourished and lifeless as a result of the greater demands and longer hours of work.

Position becomes more important than Prayer, Work becomes more important than Worship, Opportunity to advance becomes more important than Outreach. The list could continue, I think you get the picture.

There are things that every individual would like to possess in the flesh, and all too often people sacrifice their Spiritual Condition, the well being of their soul to gain increase in that area of possessions only to realize that there is more want of more things in the flesh.

Do not STARVE your soul to make more money! The flesh will DIE. The SOUL lives FOREVER! Feed the ETERNAL MAN more than the TEMPORAL MAN.

  4. V9 don’t spend all ur time dreaming of things you don’t have but be happy with what you have. If you spend all your time thing of things you don’t have you will run yourself mad its like chasing after the wind you can’t catch wind it will come then go just as fast as it comes.
Ecclesiastes 1:17 Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom, and also of madness and folly, but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind.

  5. 6:12 for who knowers what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life wich he spendeth as a shadow?who can tell the man what shall be after him under the sun.

Isahia 55:8 “for my thoughts are not
Your thoughts, neather are your ways
My tats declares The Lord “.
    ————–
Psalm 37:5Commit your way to The Lord, trust in him and he will do.
    —————
That’s it!!!!!!! We must live right, do go unto others, and commit ourselves to The Lord daily.(and obey his word)for we do not know what tomorrow will bring.

YOUR WILL BE DONE (O LORD )ON EARTH
As it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil………
    In JESUS name, amen .
Blessed be the name of The Lord !!!!!!

  6. If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.

Taking care of our soul should be our utmost priority. What good does it to gain the whole world, be well thought in our community, be the top employee and have wealth, prestige and riches, but lose our soul in the end? The song comes to my mind “Above all else I must be saved.” If anything in this world is keeping me from fulfilling my kingdom purpose and would cause me to lose my soul, I want the light of God’s word and His Spirit to reveal it to me. I must be saved!

  7. Who knows what…how and when?

The Lord knows everything that is good for us.

We follow the flesh riches and wants. But there is a way out!
Jesus is the answer. If we get plenty of Jesus we will know what is above the sun(heaven) and beneath the sun(earth).
It is important for me to follow the path of myJesus( Lord). Then he will make my path alright.

Thank you Jesus for your love for me that’s better than any riches I can ask for.

    PSALM 39:7~8
7 AND now, Lord, what wait I for? My hope is in thee.
8 Deliver me from all my transgressions: make me not the reproach of the foolish.

  8. 11 Seeing there be many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?

What are you doing with your life? Are we so caught up in the everyday routine that we don’t understand what is vanity? In todays world we know it as flesh. What does our flesh want? We must be careful in what we will allow ourselves to do.

  9. All people spend their lives scratching for food, but they never seem to have enough. Enjoy what you have rather than desiring what you don’t have. Just dreaming about nice things is meaningless—like chasing the wind. (Ecclesiastes 6:7, 9 NLT)

We live in the times where many are trying to keep up with ‘Jones’ ….. Blah!!!!!

Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content. (1 Timothy 6:6-8 NLT)

  10. 6-11
The teacher has tried to find meaing. He has honed the tools of observation rational thought and deduction. But rather than making sense out of life his examination of the reality that man experiences shows that life makes less sense than he assumed.

  11. v7 All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.

Many people worship things such as careers, possessions, or families. The temporal tangible things of this world will someday fade away. The Only thing that will remain steadfast is our eternal GOD.

GOD desires and deserves our devotion and worship. We should seek first the Kingdom of GOD and keep our priorities in order and balance. As we worship HIM in Spirit and in truth fulfilling our purpose for existence both now and forever.

Romans 8:6 says… For to be carnally minded is death but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

Living for GOD is a lifetime journey of personal spiritual development .
So grow in Grace and in HIS KNOWLEDGE .

Colossians 2:7. Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

    iChoose to walk with JESUS!

  12. Purpose

12 For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?

The Bible tells us to seek God, and his righteousness, and all these things will be adde unto us.

The preacher does not realize the joy of living for God, and not self. True fulfillment comes when doing the work of The Lord.

  13. We shouldnt spend our time dwelling on things that are material. Living a life of service, learning to be like Christ, and soul winning are all that should satisfy us.

  14. HALELUJAH!!! YES!!! IT’S ALL ABOUT JESUS!!! EVERYTHING ELSE IS VANITY!!! WHY NOT LIVE FOR JESUS!!! STOP WORRYING ABOUT WHAT EVERYTHING EVERYBODY ELSE IS DOING AND GET INTO DADDYS BUSINESS CAUSE ITS ALLLLL ABOUT JESUS ANYWAYS !!! HALELUJAH!!! THANK YOU JESUS!!! I LOVE YOU DADDY!!!

  15. What have we gained if we gain the whole world but we’re not saved? It’s pointless to live just to our self and neglect the soul. It’s vanity. Live for the Lord and let him provide all the desires of your heart.

  16. A driftless existence!

4 For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.

    Vanity-
    Word: LAD

    Pronounce: heh’bel

    Strong: H1892

Orig: or (rarely in the abs.) habel \i hab-ale’\i0\plain\f3\fs21\cf23 ; from 1891; emptiness or vanity; figuratively, something transitory and unsatisfactory; often used as an adverb:–X altogether, vain, vanity. H189

vanity–to no purpose; a type of the driftless existence of him who makes riches the chief good.

In Western art, vanity was often symbolized by a peacock, and in Biblical terms, by the Whore of Babylon. In secular allegory, vanity was considered one of the minor vices. During the Renaissance, vanity was invariably represented as a naked woman, sometimes seated or reclining on a couch. She attends to her hair with comb and mirror. The mirror is sometimes held by a demon or a putto. Symbols of vanity include jewels, gold coins, a purse, and often by the figure of death himself.

When I think of vanity I see things that have a appealing outside appearance yet is empty and hollow inside. Solomon is helping us see that having a long life without experiencing a “good life” beyond our possessions is just a lengthen life of misery. As a women my outside appearance is important to me and I believe it should be but it should never be the top priority but a minor detail. My priority is my heart and how God views it.

    1 Samuel 16:7
But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

So, what is “the good life” it is a God life. the song write said “Without Him I could do nothing, Without Him I’d surely fail; Without him I would be drifting, Like a ship without a sail. Without Him, I would be dying, Without Him I’d be enslaved; Without Him, life would be hopeless, But with Jesus, thank God, I’m saved.”

I must understand that I need God but more importantly I want Him in my life. Without Him I am living life with a driftless existence for He is my help, my direction, and my hope. Vanity is for the birds, I choose to live a blessed life!

  17. This chapter illustrates sight. Clear vision is often discovered by looking at time past. One must seek God’s will, if one wants to see things the way God intended; “Where there is no vision, the people perish”. What a mighty God we serve! May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  18. 9 Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also vanity and vexation of spirit.

    Greener Pastures

Many times people find themselves, or at least I have found myself, ask the great question “What if ?” In past I have found myself trying to put myself in “someone else’s shoes,” just to allow myself to guess at the privilage that it must be to be in their shoes. For example a brother or sister gets a new car, or new house, I might think “WOW! What I would do with that…” The word teaches us to be content with what we have. It teaches us to be thankful for that blessings that God has given us, DAILY.

If we are truly thankful for the daily blessings that God gives us, we keep our sights set on Him. We are also able to set clear obtainable goals, and achieve them. When we lose our sight, we lose our vision, our vision for His kingdom. When we covet, or allow ourselves to desire someone else’s “position” we open ourselves to a world of spiritual corruption and decay and we also end up vexing our spirit …

Whether we realize or not the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence…

  19. 12 For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?

    Living in vain…
Seeing, doing, eating, getting riches, having offspring for what cause?? This chapter seems like a life filled with all things but missing everything. There’s a missing piece. Living for self ends up leaving you empty. There is no joy without the Lord. You can live long, you can see the world, you can experience things but does not fill the heart with love peace and joy. What matters is what joy the Lord gives you, whether in plenty or in lack. Vanity leaves you dry always wanting more. The Lord satisfies the soul.

  20. Enjoy what you have rather than desiring what you don’t have. Just dreaming about nice things is meaningless—like chasing the wind. (Ecclesiastes 6:9 NLT)

Pick up your cross and follow him.

Then, calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul? (Mark 8:34-37 NLT)

  21. Legacy

For who [limited to human wisdom] knows what is good for man in his life, all the days of his vain life which he spends as a shadow [going through the motions but accomplishing nothing]? For who can tell a man what will happen [to his work, his treasure, his plans] under the sun after he is gone? (Ecclesiastes 6:12 AMP)

We can leave a legacy of dust or a legacy in eternity, the choice is ours. All our work, treasure, and plans are best channeled through the purpose of impacting eternity. We have necessary dealings in this world but that doesn’t mean we can’t still use what we have for God’s purpose.

    Matthew 6:20-21
20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

  22. 11 Seeing there be many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?

Vanity is like a disease, it feeds from what you take in. The more you intake the more it will absorb.

Lord my prayer is to be more like you, to shine for you. Deliver me from all wickedness.

  23. Resources or Idles?

Many of us are slow to learn the obvious. We continually fall into the trap of thinking ..If I just had…this or that..I would be happy. Possessions and life itself have meaning only when I come to terms with the God who created all things. When He is the foundation my life revolves, the Being around whom my life revolves, only then will we have a sense of purpose. When that purpose becomes well defined, I recognize that everything I strive for is limited in its potential to produce fulfilment. That doesn’t mean that I shouldn’t seek after those experiences ..but it does mean I must realize that my ultimate joy will never come from things or persons. It will only come from a personal knowledge of and commitment to God. Solomon noted in Ecc 3:14 that everything God does is permanent, even in the midst of his resplendent living, he knows the temperance of earthly positions (vs2-3). The lack of permanence so common to the affairs of the heart directly contrasts with the longevity of the love we recieve from God. We experience the joy that lasts forever only as we commune with the divine. It is also possible he is convicted by the fact that he is enjoying ‘things’ a bit too much, and knows he will leave it behind for another to enjoy. God may give wealth, possesions and honor, but the truth is he also gives us the choice of making them idles or the resources to bring us and others closer to Him. If we begin to despise them, maybe its because we weren’t using them properly to begin with. As Bro Greg Godwin said, snakes bite in the heat, not in the fire, but we gotta toss that snake in the fire. We gotta stop playing around in the heat, or we might get bit.

  24. Anything apart from God is vanity. Except The Lord builds the house the laboratory labor in vain.

Anything that may seem good, isn’t good unless God is the center of it.

  25. Verse 7 MSG “We work to feed our appetites; Meanwhile our souls go hungry.”

Mark 8:34-37 MSG “Calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am. Don’t run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I’ll show you how. Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to saving yourself, your true self. What good would it do to get everything you want and lose you, the real you? What could you ever trade your soul for?”

Matthew 16:24-26 MSG “Then Jesus went to work on his disciples. “Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am. Don’t run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I’ll show you how. Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself, your true self. What kind of deal is it to get everything you want but lose yourself? What could you ever trade your soul for?”

  26. Realizing that the person who knows me best beside the Lord is myself. And the most important person outside the Lord to be honest with myself is me. I’m human, which means I like nice things…but I’m a child of the Lord first and for most. So everyday I must be honest with myself in order to keep my priorities in order. I must remember to feed my soul on a daily basis.

  27. In this scripture, you can see with all mans desires or works are nothing in comparison to his walk with God.

  28. Live in light

4 For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.

You can’t be focused on yourself in order to be a light unto the world. Keep your eyes focused on serving for His glory and He will take care of the rest. It’s always nice to have things but you have to remember those things won’t be going with you. Be a light for others to follow and God will bless your sacrifices.

Be the light not the shadow
