Proverbs Chapter 23

Proverbs 23

1When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:

2And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.

3Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.

4Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.

5Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

6Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:

7For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

8The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.

9Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

10Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

11For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.

12Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.

13Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.

14Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

15My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.

16Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.

17Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.

18For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.

19Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.

20Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:

21For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

22Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

23Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

24The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.

25Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.

26My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.

27For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.

28She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.

29Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?

30They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.

31Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.

32At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

33Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.

34Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

35They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

  1. My son give me your heart and let thin eyes observe my ways.
Find a leader u can follow, follow him snd learn his ways.

  2. v3 “Do not be desirious of his danties; because they are deceitful meat.”
Psalm 141 v4 “.. .let me not eat of their delicacies.” Speaking of the delicacies of evil men.
My prayer is that I won’t be tempted by the things that appear “good” but in the end are evil. Don’t let my eyes trick me.

  3. vs 30-35 warns us against the ways of the drunkard. Before Jesus I had a whole different lifestyle that I lied. I fell into the trap of drinking. I understand what is being said about “…I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again”. When a person falls into that lifestyle they become blinded as to the pit into which they are falling. This is one area that not only adluts face, but unfortunately also their childern. This life style effects everyone around, and all to often leads to a very tragic ending. Please take heed.

  4. Be aware, and wary, of our response to worldly influences. Be a good example rather than letting others’ bad examples influence us.

  5. Buy the truth and sell it not, but wisdom and knowledge …… Lord help me to not sell out the truth and foundation that I have bulit my life on. Nothing in this world is worth losing the truth and wisdom of the Word of God and the leading of the Spirit of God.

  6. The bible is very clear about HIS order, we live in a despondent generation where sons THINK they know more than their Spiritual Father. Solomon is very clear regarding proper authority in Spiritual Order; 22 Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, this is my prayer for my sons and daughter.

23 Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding. Truth has greater value than a “right”. The word buy means “to acquire” Sons and daughters of the Apostolic Doctrine receive truth as an inheritance, and unfortunately some sell their birthright of Apostolic anointing for some temporary satisfaction. Solomon also includes wisdom, instruction and understanding.

Respect, honor and cherish every truth.

  7. An observation the Lord gave me on correcting a child:
If a child is not taught to respect his own parents, he will not have learned respect that then carries into school to his teachers. Without respect to the teachers, it then carries over to lack of respect to other figures of authority in the child’s life to include respect to the Pastor and ultimately to God.

It is vital for the child to be taught respect in the home beginning with respecting Mom & Dad with the rod of correction.

    Another observation in correction:
Correct the action -not the person. I see parents beliitle the child for the action instead of letting the child know he/she is loved-it’s only the action you are displeased with.

  8. Vs. 17 & 18 says, “Let not thine heart envy sinners; but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day long. For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.”

We should not be envious of sinners, and what they are doing. There is coming a judgment day, in which, God will judge every work of man. So, we need to fear God and and live for him everyday of our lives, because our hope is in him.

In closing, I would like to add these scriptures for thought. Ecclesiastes 12: 13 & 14. “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.”

  9. Im intrigued by the first set of verses dealing with behavior at a kings table. When we come before THE KING, we must mind our manners, so to speak. Too many times perhaps, we come to the house of God with our hands open wide reaching for anything we can get our hands on. Not for the furthering of his will and kingdom but rather for our own pleasure. Its an honor to sit at his table, and rather than desiring his riches it is better to serve and be thankful for whatever we are blessed with. It is right to ask God, but wrong to greedily pursue riches and glory for ourselves.

  10. Vs 7 for as he thinketh in his heart so is he. This verse speaks for itself. Don’t always take in what others think about you. You need to encourage yourself in the Lord and not worry aboutbeing built up by man. Be happy in the Lord and know He did a good work!

  11. This chapter shows us not everyone that calls you friend can be trusted. Unfortunately youth is more easily decieved, which is why we should all listen to our elders, parents & pastor. We are instructed to spank our children if we choose not they may end up getting correction by the law. Parents that love thier children will correct them so others are not burdened with it, atleast that’s what our parents said. Thank God for wise men and women and for Godly correction. God Bless you all.

  12. Let not thine heart envy sinners… what a wise saying! The wages of sin are paid with death; you have to work to earn a wage. If our hearts are envious of sinners, we are envious of a death certificate. Fear the Lord… have reverence and respect for the Lord; we must “guide thine heart in the way.” This means to me that it is up to us where our heart is led so guard it, protect it, and receive wise counsel.

  13. vs 22 Young people should welcome advice from their Father and Mother . Old folke have years of experience behind them . Young people should recognize this and try to benefit as much as possible from their experience.

  14. Reading this chapter I understand the quote “you become who you hang out with”. You can’t expect to live a holy life with foolish individuals.
Correction and direction from your elders is important, it will help you strive for bigger blessed things in the kingdom of God.
I really enjoyed this chapter 🙂

  15. V20-21 “Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh: For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.” 1 Cor 6:12-13 “All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them…”

God has given us natural desires that are not bad unless abused, taken out of the context He ordained for them to turn them into avenues for sin. It is when we become ruled by these desires, rather than disciplining the flesh, we fall into sin. As highlighted in the passage in Proverbs, laziness is not good. The desire to rest is natural, and Jesus has rest built in to His plan concerning work. As such, this presents us with the need to work to keep in balance that drive to rest.

I can say from experience, it’s easy to listen to the body say “I’m too tired” and give in and rest when you have a position to fill. However, I can also say from experience, when you tell the body “too bad” and keep pushing on to accomplish the work God has for you and trust in Him to make it work out, He will answer by giving you strength during your time of weakness. If we will give what is in our hand to give (not holding back), we can trust God to break and multiply the sacrifice for the furtherance of His purpose.

Isa 40:29-31 “He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

  16. It is important to give a listning ear and open heart to our elders because they use their experiances to help teach us.

  17. v 17, 18 Those who follow him, God promises a hope and a wonderful future even if we don’t achieve it in this life.

  18. 12Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.

13Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.

14Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

When I read this all I can think is that they are not talking about physical death, but spiritual death. For the death of the flesh is inevitable, but death of the spirit is eternal. We must learn the instructions so we can teach it to our children so they may have eternal life.

  19. v10 Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

We must keep what has been set before us alive. Truth must be carried on to the next generation. Only the holy landmark that our forefathers have built upon will be able to stand in this evil day and time.

  20. Lord help us not to be tempted by this world sin is but for a season Ive been there but I wasnt happy I just know that I do have joy in my heart now thnk you Lord
