Proverbs Chapter 31

Proverbs 31

1The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him.

2What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? and what, the son of my vows?

3Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.

4It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:

5Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.

6Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.

7Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.

8Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.

9Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.

10Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

11The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.

12She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

13She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.

14She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar.

15She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.

16She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.

17She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.

18She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.

19She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.

20She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

21She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.

22She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.

23Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.

24She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

25Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.

26She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

27She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

28Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

29Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.

30Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.

31Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

  1. Open thy mouth judge righteously and plead the cause of the poor and needy

God has given us the chance to go before Him in prayer and ask him to bless them to for give them to plead there cause if u will.
When we are put in authority we must judge right fighting for the ones that are true.

  2. v 4-5 A strong warning to leaders. Leaders cannot afford to be distracted. Leaders must stand for righteousness. Leaders minds must be fixed on God and His commandments. Otherwise, those who depend on leaders to make right decisions may be hurt. (MSG)

  3. So many things speak to my heart in reading this chapter. Every woman has the desire to become the Proverbs 31 woman, yet at times the task seems so overwhelming. Again, as the underlying thread in every chapter of Proverbs has been, “Discipline” is the key word. We can accomplish much more on a daily basis if we will discipline our time and our minds to stay on purpose, focus, organize, seek the Lord first. The last verse “give her the fruit of her hands, and her own works will praise her in the gates” we don’t have to tell others about our accomplishments, play by play, the actions and results will speak for themselves. Lord, help me be the
    Proverbs 31 womanj, daily!

  4. I am concerned about the recent argument from those in church leadership to approve or condone the consumption of alcoholic beverage. Having been delivered from alcohol over 22 years ago I know what kind of ignorant thoughts come to those that drink. It is very clear here in Chapter 31 that we should avoid any consumption of alcoholic beverage; in an effort to keep our thoughts pure and minds focused on our calling from GOD.

    NLT explains it very well.
4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, to guzzle wine.
    Rulers should not crave alcohol.
5 For if they drink, they may forget the law
and not give justice to the oppressed.
6 Alcohol is for the dying,
and wine for those in bitter distress.
7 Let them drink to forget their poverty
and remember their troubles no more.

BE Church, trust and obey the fulness of the word of GOD.

  5. 31Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

We will be known by our fruits whether they be righteous or wicked. And this may not be referencing this but it makes me think of on judgement day our works are what we will be answering for.

  6. Like Sis. Watts said, “Every woman has the desire to become the Proverbs 31 woman”. Help me Lord when I fall short of this; but, always striving, bolder than ever, more determined, and confident in you.

  7. This chapter brings to mind Micah 6:8b – And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God. This is the way I should live at home, work, where ever He puts me; actively being Church to all who are within that sphere of influence. Lord, guide me to Your honor and glory.

  8. This whole chapter shows that a virtuous woman is not selfish but commits her life to her family and gives her husband honor and respect amoung the people because of her Godly ways.

  9. “Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.” The only way we can strive to be a virtuous woman as Prov. 31 talks about is to be a woman that fears God with all of her heart.

  10. 1The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him.

Teach our children to war for old prophesies God is faithful. His spoken words will come to pass in His time.

8Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.
9Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.

Speak life, salvation, healing, restaration and blessings.
More over as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you. I Sam 12:23

  11. I agree, alcohol consumption can wreck havoc in individuals. It is the perception alcohol is associated with. As leaders of the church, we set the example for newcomers. As a home bible study instructor, I dont think drinking a beer would be a good example. Newcomers would question the church’s mission.

Also, I thank God for having a wife with good virtues and character. But it’s up to us men to say THANK YOU, to our wives so they can feel appreciated.

  12. 30Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.

Physical beauty can become unattractive by not fearing the Lord. People try using several methods, chemicals, and spend lots of money to try and increase their looks. So much is wasted when the real beauty secret is the root of everything including wisdom, the fear of the Lord.

  13. A large portion of this chapter speaks of the virtuous woman. 26She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.
27She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.
28Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

The verse that sticks out to me, is verse 27, she does not eat the bread of idleness. I think this goes back to Sis. Watts comment regarding Discipline. Due to her discipline her children and husband praise her. She is called blessed. This could also be a reflection of the church as it is the bride of Christ. A virtuous woman, walking in wisdom, kindness and working for Jesus. Be Church!

  14. If I could have a prayer for my future wife this chapter would be it. That she would have integrety and be blessed in her household and among those adound her.
As the bride of Christ we need to be like this woman, working hard when most people are asleep, in the market place providing meat for her family.

  15. Young men read this chapter hold it to heart before you even consider looking for a prospective wife. Young ladies watch the young men see how the praise, worship, and love God for as they love God they will love you.

  16. 1The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him.

Teach our children to war for old prophesies. God is Faithful. His spoken words will come to pass in His time

8Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction. 9Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.

Speak life, salvaton, healing, restoration and blessing.
More over as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you. I Sam. 12:23

  17. V. 3 I think that a man should not just go for any lady, because he should be seeking a strong christian lady that works in her home and that she is modestly dressed meaning not for us young girls to be showing our “business” that GOD gave us.

  18. I also liked what brother timothy said about praying for his future wife….this is what sis. leah taught us children in sunday school. She was teaching us girls and boys. Thanks Sis. Leah

  19. The Virtuous woman..this chapter has taught me so much as a christian..i am far from being all that she is. But i can say that i am geting better as the years go by. I like that this chapter is not only talking to us ladies but to the men In what type of woman the man should be looking for.

  20. This chapter provides guidance and instruction to leaders/rulers. We are instructed to pray for those that have the rule over us, so they may make wise and Godly decisions. This chapter also praises honorable and favorable women that are wives, were wives and/or destined to become wives one day if the Lord permits (Pray for a God fearing mate). An upright woman will pray without ceasing for not only her family but also others, we must never forget to pray for the women in our lives i.e. mothers, wives, sisters and daughters. God has placed women in a special place, which we should all honor and respect. May the good Lord Jesus Bless you all

  21. V6-7 “Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts. Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.” This reminds me of Bro Morgan’s message titled “It’s Not God’s Fault.” Taking from that famous passage at the beginning of Isaiah 61:

Isa 61:1-3 “1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; 2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; 3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.”

This world so easily turns to sinful pleasures to hide, numb, or forget pain; drinking, drugs, promiscuity, etc. provide a sense of relief yet only cause more damage. The Lord has sent us to be vessels for Him to work through to minister to this world; instead of ministering to them with wine we minister to them with God’s Spirit, both bringing them Jesus and being Jesus to them. When Jesus came robed in flesh, He went around actively ministering to people. To be church (His body) we must do the same.

  22. I agree that this is not only an example of a godly god fearing woman, it is an example of the Church to this world.

Bottom line is that when we fear God, disipline our lives so it reflects His love and grace, we lift up those around us – causing them to be looked upon with respect.

The hurt, the injured & those bound by things of this world are cryiing out for us to be church to them, lifting them up above their circumstances, giving them hope for a brighter future and heaven too.

  23. Plead the cause of the poor and the needy. I am so thankful for the spirit of giving to those in need, and blessing our community @ the POFW. I have watched how so many lives have been touched since February of 2010, and can only imagine how many lives have been changed, touched, and impacted over the course of 8 years. What a testimony and pursuit of wisdom. The best is yet to come!

  24. vs. “3 Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.”.. Other peolpe chase after the pleasures of this world, they only lead to distruction.

  25. The virtuos woman, someone every woman longs to be.It is definitely a choice. I know I am not close to being the woman I desire to be, but am striving to get there!

  26. A virtuous woman knows how to get a prayer through. She is not worried about her own needs, but concerned about the needs of others. God is looking for those who fall into this category, virtuous. A virtuous women will not stop until her prayers have been answered.

  27. After reading this chapter I feel I did raise my son well & Im trying to do the same with my daughter but this I know that without God in our lifes I believe I would be doing her wrong by not showing her how great & loving God is
