Day 25 Prayer Focus and 1 Corinthians Chapter 9

Comment of the day from 1/24/11

This chapter tells me, do not depend on idols, or food/meat that is used for sacrificial purposes. Knowledge of this world can lead us down the wrong path and into satan’s trap. Having a relationship with God, he know us, and he will guide us with the truth.

Idols have no meaning, they are just a desire non-christians want and something they covet. As Bro. Chavis said, “it is the sheppards rod(our idol), that we need to let go, throw away, it is part of the past” and let it serve “only as a reminder”. Ask God, are there any idols I need to let go?

If we are weak minded, the more idols we
will have in our mind. As Christians, we know, there is only one true God, his name is Jesus. And with Jesus, there is no need for idols, Jesus is our answer to all things.

Day 25 Prayer Focus

Read Galatians 5:22-26. Pray that the Spirit of God will produce abundant fruit in your life: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, self-control. This is the key to successful Christian living and to everything you do for God.

1 Corinthians 9

1Am I am not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord?

2If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord.

3Mine answer to them that do examine me is this,

4Have we not power to eat and to drink?

5Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?

6Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working?

7Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?

8Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also?

9For it is written in the law of Moses, thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen?

10Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.

11If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?

12If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.

13Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?

14Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

15But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void.

16For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!

17For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me.

18What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel.

19For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.

20And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;

21To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.

22To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.

23And this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you.

24Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.

25And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.

26I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:

27But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

  1. Verses 24-27 are interesting. They tell me, never to give up on being a Christian. Like a runner or a boxer, continue to push yourself to be a servant of God. Even though we go through trials, lose faith, get discouraged, we must continue to seek God and give him praises.

Just like a runner/boxer who are physically strong, we must be spiritually strong in our faith and trust in the Lord. We continue to fight, until we see our prayers answered.

  2. Paul shows that the ministry should live off their ministry and the people of God must support the ministry in their finances. Also we should strive for perfection in our daily lives to be all God wants us to be.

  3. v27 NIV ” No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.” Paul, an apostle, shipwrecked, beaten, imprisoned, encourager to the church and evangelist to the lost had to keep his body under subjection. He had to keep that holy fear of God in his life. He had to die daily to the flesh. Not a superhuman but a man with a supernatural power, the Holy Ghost. Yet, even he knew that it is not enough to preach it to others but that we have to live this gospel out in our lives. Let’s don’t “run aimlessly.” We can’t BE CHURCH if we lose our direction.

  4. Vs.24-27. Paul was prepared to pay the costly price. It was a necessity laid on him. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel .This required self-control and discipline.” I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God” Phil.3:13
Paul’s good advice. but be thou example of believers in word, in conversation in charity, in spirit,in faith, in purity give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine neglect not the gift that is in thee, devote your-self to them that thu profiting may appear to all save your-self and others 1 Tim.4:12-16

    No room for slackness.

  5. Verses 19-23 Could be easily misunderstood. Many would think that Paul is saying to change who you are in Christ and become like the people you are trying to win by doing what they do in sin. But no….he is saying to try and have as much in common with them as you can without overstepping the boundaries so that you may then win them over to Christ. A doctor couldn’t go dressed in his expensive suit and tie, hair fixed just right, shoes just polished and that watch he just bought and expect to be accepted by the gang bangers that live across town. They would reject anything he had to say and most definitely wouldn’t care to invite him in. But neither do I believe he should dress in their style with his pants on the ground……ha. Dress in something that wouldn’t make them uncomfortable to be around you. Don’t flash what they don’t have. Talk about things that interest them and not yourself.
    GNT
22So I become all things to all people, that I may save some of them by whatever means are possible.
23 All this I do for the gospel’s sake, in order to share in its blessings.

  6. 24Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.

25And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.

Run, that you may obtain. We can’t forget what we are striving for; it is easy to get weary in well doing but we have a purpose and a goal. We a have a dream of revival now! Be all to all so that we can gain more…more souls, more of Christ, life and life more abundantly! Be Church!

  7. Physical strength is good ‘yet spiritual strength is better. When we are weak He is strong. Lets get some God strength in us.

  8. Verses 22-23 (Message Version) say..”I’ve become just about every sort of servant there is in my attempts to lead those I meet into a God-saved life. I did all this because of the Message. I didn’t just want to talk about it; I wanted to be in on it!” We have to be “Doers” as in James 1:22….But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. We need to be like Paul in Verse 26…..I don’t know about you, but I’m running hard for the finish line. I’m giving it everything I’ve got.

  9. VS. 9:24-27 Paul sets his sights on his goals not as his rights. As an athlete gladly surrendered pleasures while in training to win a crown woven of leaves Paul sets aside his rights in order to achieve spiritual goals. While studing chapter I came across this illustration of to athletes wrestling followed by my commint which I thought was very good.

  10. 7. Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?

If we tell others how God can bless them, we will be blessed; while building faith in others, our faith is increased.

I recall a particular time I felt impreseed to go pray with someone during a church service; I assumed God wanted to bless them and if I could help, I wanted to. That has been at least 15 years ago and I recieved such a blessing during that prayer that I can still recall that person’s name and tell you where they were sitting in that service!

    16. For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me

He knew that God blessed (and still blesses) obedience; if I had not obeyed that night, I would not have received my blessing. God’s work will go on; if I choose not to obey and be a part, it is I who will miss out on what He has in store!!

  11. Vs 20-22: I can relate to these verses as a Bible Study teacher. After a while in teaching, I began to notice that when I understood the scriptures as a certain denomination understands them, I would know what scriptures to use to help them fully see & understand salvation. The more I taught, they more I learned how to teach to other beliefs.

Understanding where they were coming from helped me to reach them with the fullness of God’s word.

Theologians say that Mark- in writing to the Roman or military mind, wrote his Gospel with different words than Matthew, focusing on his authority. Matthew, they say, wrote to the Jewish mind using Old Testament references to prove he fullfilled prophecies, and Luke wrote both intelligently and beautifully in reaching for the Greeks. I believe this is what Paul is talking about-be what they need to understand the whole gospel.

Be Church! Be whatever they need to understand the word of God.

  12. The message:
26-27I don’t know about you, but I’m running hard for the finish line. I’m giving it everything I’ve got. No sloppy living for me! I’m staying alert and in top condition. I’m not going to get caught napping, telling everyone else all about it and then missing out myself.

Man, if we all could grab a hold of this type of burden there would be no stopping us.

  13. This Chapter is about not being afraid. This world is full of many different types of people and we need to be willing to go among them, relate to them, perhaps changing our speech pattern, dressing down, or up, learning a bit about that persons favorite team, just whatever it takes to get them to a place where they are palatable to receive the gospel.
To be Church we need to be Versatile. Be flexible, and open our field of influence. The more people we can affect the greater the harvest.

  14. 14Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

Some wonder why preachers get paid for preaching…Well, its real simple…the LORD ordained it.

  15. Being all things to all men, I think, has been a phrase that has been used to justify behaviors and to make it appear that they are not trying to offend others. Being all things to all men was really what Evangelist Ken Cook would call Lifestyle Evangelism… Paul was finding common ground with all men for the sake of the Gospel of Jesus Christ so that he could bring them into the fold. Our attitude should be that we are on a mission; our mission is to connect with those that God loves but are out of Covenant Relationship with him… those that are living outside of their inheritance… not living in the spirit of adoption… the lost… the missing… the hurting… our neighbors… our bosses… our family members… our bankers… our teachers… our real estate agents… our insurance agents… our dentists… doctors… grocery clerks… you fill in the blank. Connect with those in “your world,” those you see everyday, not just for the sake of connecting but rather for the PURPOSE of CONNECTING them to JESUS CHRIST. The people in “our world,” are already part of the body at POFW… they just don’t know it yet.

  16. V19 “For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.”

I feel like this verse really sums it up. Paul speaks of becoming a servant to all that he might win some, of sacrificing even what is due to him for preaching the gospel, of disciplining himself so he can be used to fulfill God’s calling for him. He truly took on the role of a servant (willingly and joyfully) to God, to the church, and to the lost.

Phil 2:5-8 outlines the mind of Christ “5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”

We are called to be like Christ as Christians. He came with such humility that even though He was God Almighty Himself, He “made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant” when He came to bring salvation to a lost and dying world. So must we throw all reputation aside and become humble and take on the form of a servant as we go to bring the gospel to this world. We must have a servant’s heart to get self out of the way before we can do what God has called us to do.

Notice how it says He was “made in the likeness of men”; Jesus robed Himself not in some grand form that was glorious above humanity but came on the same level as those He reached for, just as Paul said “I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.” This doesn’t mean we throw separation and all holiness standards out the window, but (like others have already said) we meet with the lost in a way that they can receive us.

Phil 2:8 says “he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross”; so too must we daily be humble unto God’s perfect will and die to ourselves by crucifying our flesh. V27 “But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.” This brings to mind Luke 9:23-25 “23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. 24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. 25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?” Along the lines of what Bro Chavis preached Sunday night, it doesn’t matter how “right” it feels, how “right” it appears, just because we’ve gained the whole world doesn’t mean our own salvation is automatically intact. In all our striving to be servants, we must remember that we serve God first and foremost and relationship with Him comes first.

    BE Church
    BE a Servant

  17. Passion is irreplaceable!

Passion motivates, activates, demonstrates, and resonates. I would rather have passion than money! OH I do have way more Passion the money.

Paul said in verse 24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.

There is something inside of me that refuses to give up or give in. I am running that I may obtain or possess the promise that GOD gave me.

This is what we fight for the promises of GOD that Satan attempts to steal. I know my adversary; anyone who opposes the fulfillment of the dream and promise that GOD gave me.

26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:

I run for the promise of heaven and I fight for the promises of GOD.

    BE Church
    BE Purposeful

  18. The admonish at the end of this chapter shouts at me to “Keep my focus”. Don’t become entangled and distracted that all my life I have lived for an eternal goal, and then this close to the finality of life here on earth as we know, I would become deceived and become like a spiritual castaway. I must keep my eyes on the goal, which not only is Heaven for me, but also, leading others by my example; becoming all things to all people, so that I might win some.

  19. vs ” 26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:
27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.”… Paul is teling us how he has to purposefully fight continually to keep his flesh in check.

  20. 24Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.

If you begin with a good attitude you are closer to win the prize. The coaches & trainers will tell you that you need to begin every competition with a winning attitude. With that said, I believe that we must preform every job, every chore, everything we do as if we are doing it for God’s use. If Jesus Himself was coming to inspect your work, you will like to please Him. Everything we do here should be for His Glory and His Glory alone, therefore any reward we receive in this world is temporary and perishable, unlike the rewards that we will receive when we join Him in Heaven. So preach, share the Gospel with everyone for you dont know who is listening and where is your seed being planted, the harvest might not be yours, but when its time to reap, the Lord will have His laborers reap it.

  21. This chapter is speaking of the life of Evangelists and Missionary’s. If God’s people do not provide for them who will? We all have a responsibility and debt to pay. If we support those that spread the Gospel than we also are a part of their work, which is for God’s Glory. Paul also describes how we must be mindful of our surroundings/company this is a simple warfare strategy, even the world is aware of. Lastly we should be willing to give more for a prize that will last for eternity.
