Day 30 Prayer Focus and 1 Corinthians Chapter 14

Comment of the day from 1/29/11

The synopsis of the first part of the chapter encourages us that everything must be done with love. Everything revolves around love. Doesn’t matter how much we speak in tongues, and how holy we look, if we do not possess the true attributes our good will be evil spoken of because we will not respond with the charity that God requires us to have. Charity suffers long. Sometimes we are so quick to cut people off and be finished with them, when if we use the attribute of charity and suffereth long with them, we could provoke them to a Godly life.

Sis. Watts

Day 30 Prayer Focus

Pray for a spirit of intercession in the church. If we don’t know how we ought to pray, pray in the Spirit. “Through our inarticulate groans the Spirit himself is pleading for us, and God who searches our inmost being knows what the Spirit means, because he pleads for God’s people in God’s own way” (Romans 8:26-27, The New English Bible).

1 Corinthians 14

1Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.

2For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

3But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

4He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

5I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

6Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?

7And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?

8For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?

9So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.

10There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.

11Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.

12Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.

13Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.

14For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

15What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

16Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?

17For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.

18I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:

19Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

20Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.

21In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.

22Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

23If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?

24But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:

25And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.

26How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.

27If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.

28But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.

29Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.

30If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.

31For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.

32And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.

33For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

34Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law.

35And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

36What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?

37If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

38But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.

39Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.

40Let all things be done decently and in order.

  1. 1Cor.14:14-15 Rsb
It is better to pray or sing in a language everyone understands so that the gift may be used fruitfully
Thank God for all His spiritual gifts that operate at The Pentecostals Of FortWorth
One of the gifts is the spirit of worship, thanksgiving, and praise
Which edifys HIS body. (build-up) HIS church.
Like Sister Watts says;”It’s all about HIM our worship prepares an atmosphere of expectation.
There is no telling what GOD will do and is doing even now in our life
God will visit His people with blessings, healings,
encouragements for those that are lost, hurting
    And without hope.
We entertain angels unaware , they desire to see what our Great GOD is doing.

  2. The tongue is the unrulely member of the body, and as such this chapter is about the tongue. In vs.8″For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?” This means that if that trumpet didn’t sound right the men would not have gone to battle; likewise when we speak in tongues it only edifys ourself because noone understands what is coming out.Unless it is interpreted.

  3. But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.

I thank Paul for this comment to many times people get got caught up in trying to persuade the ignorant when there is so much more than can be done. When you come across someone who is ignorant let your life be a testimony and save your words for thoose who would listen

  4. 22Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not…

We as a church understand that tongues with no interpretation only edifies ourselves, but tongues with interpretation edifies the church. We also find in this passage that tongues are a sign not to the believer but the ones who do not believe. Someone who hears tongues that they do not understand and know that the person speaking them only speaks English it is a sign. Tongues are a sign of the true church and the evidence of the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost is a witness for my soul to those who do not believe.

  5. 25And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.

All of us play a special part within the service. When a sinner comes in whose heart is ready to receive from God they are counting on us to create the atmosphere. I we choose to sit back, not pray, not praise, and take it easy we may be hindering someone from coming to God. However if we do pray and praise and speak in tongues the reaction stated in the verse will take place and our actions will have influenced someone to God.

  6. Verses 1-2 (Message) say….Go after a life of love as if your life depended on it—because it does. Give yourselves to the gifts God gives you. Most of all, try to proclaim his truth. If you praise him in the private language of tongues, God understands you but no one else does, for you are sharing intimacies just between you and him.

Verses 39-40 (Message) say…Three things, then, to sum this up: When you speak forth God’s truth, speak your heart out. Don’t tell people how they should or shouldn’t pray when they’re praying in tongues that you don’t understand. Be courteous and considerate in everything.

  7. Operating in the gifts of the spirit is something that many churches have lost. Or maybe they haven’t lost it but are afraid and do not yield to the gifts that God is trying to use them in. I am thankful to know that I am in a church that is not losing the gifts but ever striving to be more in tune and receive what God has for us.

  8. Seek after the gifts of the spirit but use them decently and in order. There should b balance between speaking with a heavenly language and speaking in understanding. Though tongues is good if that is all there is there would be no edifying of the church and saving of the unbelievers.

  9. ” 39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.”… Pual has just taken this whole chapter to explain to us how important it is to prophesy, and how this is how the church is edified. We must grow and to grow we must be edified.

“40 Let all things be done decently and in order.” Growing up in a different denominal background, I never learned much about “decently and in order” it was always “go with the flow”. If the wind blew we chased it. I have truely grown tremendously over the last several years because of the structure of the POFW, and furthermore believe strongly that this is the order (structure) that I need to be able to reach my potential for His kingdom…

  10. The Bible answer to people that say the Holy Ghost is not necessary, or that we should not speak with tongues in church.

38 But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.

39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.

Paul is very clear in his address regarding tongues; when operating in Spiritual Gifts it is more beneficial to the church to prophesy, however it does not mean that we should totally abandon speaking with other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance as the sign of being filled with the Holy Ghost.

    BE Filled

40Let all things be done decently and in order.

  11. This chapter instructs us how to allow the Spirit of God operate thourgh us to prophecy or for tongues and intrepetation. Both ministry privileges require that we stay into with the spirit of God and be sensitive to intrepret tongues, or be used in prophecy. Everything must be done in decency and order and we must hear from God in order for that to happen.

  12. This chapter emphasizes being used in the spirit in toungs and prophesying. It also tells us that speaking in tounges should not be stopped but continue in the lives of the people of God

  13. God is not the author of confusion, he has an order for everything. We must always abide in the order that God has set up, else we fall into destruction. Don’t be deceived by what man has put in order, but follow what God has already ordained.

  14. Unbelievers dont understand the meaning of speaking in tongues. Not until they are filled with the Holy Ghost will they understand. The Holy Ghost is our testimony, knowledge, wisdon and understanding of speaking in tongues.

  15. Paul stresses two principals: all must be done for the strengthening the church and in a fitting and orderly way “God is not a God of disorder, but of peace” 1 Co 14:43

Paul appears to expect the participation of women 1 Co 11:5 were women pray and prophesy. Corinthian women were asking questions about the meaning of different prophesies and messages of tounges in a disruptive manner, and should have been quiet.

It is instructive to know that Paul discourages speech by other worshipers in two other instances in this passage. 1 Co 14:28,30

His instructions on silence are not aimed only at women, and are intended primarily to bring respect and order in the church’s worship experience.

  16. This chapter emphasizes that we must do things in order, God is not the author of confusion. If we speak to people in tongues without an interpretation than it’s useless to them, as such we should not do so. If we think ourselves above Paul’s teaching than we ought to exam ourselves so we do not cause confusion. This chapter is very explicit and should be adhered to so we are not the cause of disorder, but obedient of God’s order.
