Galatians Chapter 4

Galatians 4

1Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all;

2But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.

3Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world:

4But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,

5To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

6And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

7Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

8Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.

9But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?

10Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years.

11I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.

12Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am; for I am as ye are: ye have not injured me at all.

13Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first.

14And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.

15Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me.

16Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?

17They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye might affect them.

18But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you.

19My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,

20I desire to be present with you now, and to change my voice; for I stand in doubt of you.

21Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?

22For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.

23But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.

24Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.

25For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.

26But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

27For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.

28Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

29But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.

30Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.

31So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

  1. Gal. 4:16 Have I Now becme your enemy
    by telling you the truth?

Paul wanted them to hold firm to the truth he
    had taught them.Gal: 4:16 (R.S.B. )
We must remain true to the truth . (Doctrine )
    Jesus is coming soon.
Thank God for a Pastor and a church that
Still stands firmly on truth at the P.O.F.W.

  2. So glad to be a child of the free.
I am puzzled by those that believe I am in bondage because of my faith and walk with God. But what they do not realize is that I don’t NEED make up to “be pretty”, cigarettes for my nerves, drugs to feel good and have a good time, alcohol to erase my troubles (for a small amount of time), clothing to get the attention of others and on and on. There is freedom and true Joy in living for God and no one can convince me otherwise.

  3. 6And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

7Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

Evidence that once we recieved the Holy Ghost we were adopted into the kingdom of God. We are his children and heir’s to his kingdom.

  4. 29But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.

So true! In todays world news we hear that one nation is rising while another is falling. Man against man, brother against brother. The days of this life is getting shorter everyday. Wake up to what is round you, see what is of the spirit and what is not. As the endtime church it is our obligation to tell this city, nation, and world about what is happening.

  5. Praise God, we are from the free woman! Thank you Jesus for making us sons, and heirs…we are adopted, with the spirit of adoption. Thank you Abba Father! Amen.
    ……..Be Church……..

  6. Childern while minors not free. So the israelities under the bondage of the law until christ came. Christ frees from the bondage. The folly of gentiles seeking this bondage. How the galatians had once welcomed the gospel. The two covenants Hagar and Sarah and their significance.

  7. NIV 8 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods. 9 But now that you know God—or rather are known by God—how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable forces[d]? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again?

This tells me not to look back at your past and rely on old things, but look forward at the new things God has in store for you. Relying on the past only brings back tribulant times, sadness and lack of faith. Lets look into the future, and see the blessings God has for each one of us.

  8. Verse 27 says the desolate has many more children than the women with a husband.
The children of darkness are many and its up to us (the children of the light) to reach out and help them. The Bible says that hell has enlarged its self yet I believe that if the church would enlarge its self we may be able to shrink hell a little more each day.

  9. I’m not a servant, I’m a son!
I’m not an orphan, I’ve been adopted!
I’m not in bondage, I am free!

Get that bondwoman out of here!!
    Here comes the promise!!
    Get ready POFW!

  10. V23 “But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.”

Paul continues in his letter to the Galations urging them to continue in faith and see the revelation of this dispensation of grace. I found an interesting contrast between the law and grace.

Eph 2:3 AMP “Among these we as well as you once lived and conducted ourselves in the passions of our flesh [our behavior governed by our corrupt and sensual nature], obeying the impulses of the flesh and the thoughts of the mind [our cravings dictated by our senses and our dark imaginings]. We were then by nature children of [God’s] wrath and heirs of [His] indignation, like the rest of mankind.”

Rom 4:15 AMP “For the Law results in [divine] wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression [of it either].”

With our human nature being one of death, the law operated in a way we understood. And eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. Just look at how young children act when they play; if another child takes a toy from them, they may cry or scream (declaring the wrong; judgment comes) and perhaps retaliate by being aggressive towards the other child or trying to take the toy back or maybe even running to a caretaker looking for help (justice following judgment.) They may not act appropriately or adequately control their actions, but even in young children you can see they have a sense of justice in which judgment comes upon offenders and justice reigns through whatever punishment satisfies the offended party. People can grasp judgment and punishment. But what about grace and forgiveness?

These qualities are not always so easy for us to come by, especially when the offense against us is personal. We often think of the Jewish people as being the ones to famously struggle with a works mentality but sadly many people end up in that boat at least at some point, one way or another. The human mind seems to struggle to grasp that freedom with promise under grace. Paul calls it like it is in v9 “But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?”

Being under the law was a preparation so that there might come discipline to the flesh and a moulding of a person’s ways to conform to that which pleases God. But it doesn’t stop there. So many seem content to run with the concept of redemption but stop at the place of the law as if they could somehow earn their way out of the pit that sin has dug them into. I like how Eph 2:3 AMP puts it “…We were then by nature children of [God’s] wrath and heirs of [His] indignation, like the rest of mankind.” From today’s chapter 23,30 “23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise. … 30 Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.”

We can’t fix the problem of the sinful flesh with our flesh. Paul outlines towards the end of the chapter quite clearly that we must be children of promise and not children after the flesh. The flesh we understand, but that will only lead us to death. Prov 3:5 “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” The way of salvation is not something that we simply understand through the flesh but through faith. Faith allows us access to the promise. Eph 2:8-9 “8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

Gal 3:23-25 sums it up “23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.

24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.”

  11. 15Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me.

16Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?

People have a tendency to hate others because they tell them the truth. A true friend will let you know even if it hurts. Someone said the truth hurts. Actually the truth doesn’t hurt, the truth sets you free. It’s the lie the truth revealed that hurts.

  12. This chapter instructs us not to turn back. Why is it we are so quick to think the “Grass is Greener on the other Side”, when it has been proven more often than not it is “Not Greener”. We should be ecstatic if we have repented of our sins and received the Holy Ghost for we are heirs! Praise be to God! We must Be-careful, Be-vigilant and Be-church

  13. I spoke with some people about this today, one who has never attended The POFW and quoted this verse to them. 16 Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth? I am definitely not desiring to make any enemies; however I am seeking to speak the truth. The word of GOD is a sword, it should cut us on occasion.

Zeal and drive are simply the ability to motivate. 17 They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye might affect them. 18 But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you. It seems that many people are more readily and easily motivated to do evil than motivated to do GOD!

    BE Church
    BE Zealous for HIM

  14. Verses 4-7 in the NLT version say….

But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children. And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.” Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir.

  15. 13Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first.
14And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.

No matter how we feel, we need to be vigillant to teach the gospel. We must teach the word no matter what we have going on at home. People around us see our everyday slips, but we need to limit them, that we might show His light.
