Ephesians Chapter 2

Ephesians 2

1And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

2Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

3Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

4But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

5Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

6And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

7That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

8For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

9Not of works, lest any man should boast.

10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

11Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;

12That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:

13But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

14For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

15Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

16And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

17And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.

18For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

19Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

20And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

21In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:

22In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

  1. It is very encouraging to see the contrast of promise and life that conversion brings to us. Paul gives a vivid illustration of that contrast in verse
    12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:

    NIV translates:12 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world.

    MKW translates: we were clueless, lost, poor, homeless and hopeless.

    Through intimate relationship with Jesus we have the following contrast.
    19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; 20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

    MSG version 19 That’s plain enough, isn’t it? You’re no longer wandering exiles. This kingdom of faith is now your home country. You’re no longer strangers or outsiders. You belong here, with as much right to the name Christian as anyone. God is building a home.

    MKW version: Once we are Born Again of the water and the Spirit we are born into the family, brought into HIS home to share HIS promises and blessings with all other like believers and literally become part of the house GOD is building (studs, wallboard, nails, floor-covering, and fixtures in GOD’s house).

    For the sole purpose that our lives can be HIS place to live as we live in HIM; 22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

    BE The building JESUS lives in.

  2. Eph.2:10 NIV Created in Christ Jesus to do
    good works
    We must please God and not peaple
    Gal.1:10 CEV
    I labor struggling with all his energy which so powerfully works in me. Col.1:29 RSB
    God is our source of effectiveness.

  3. If it was not for God robing himself in flesh, bearing the cross all the way to Mount Calvary, his hands and feet being nailed to a cross, being raised up for all to see, and him dying there that day we would be without saving grace and ability to come boldly before him in prayer.
    Never do I want to take lightly what God did for us.

  4. 19Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

    20And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

    21In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:

    22In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

    The Lord is the chief cornerstone and the apostles laid the foundation for the first church. We are to multiply and grow the Holy Temple of the Lord. What a heritage we have in Jesus!

  5. v12 in the Niv says that “at one time you (Gentiles) were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreingers to the covenants of the promise, without hope and with out God in the world v13 but now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.” There was a time in the life of the Gentiles when things were hopeless! But it was the desire of God that all should be saved. And Jesus gave His life for all; including a group of people that His own people (the Jews) thought of as not worthy of the favor of God. Col. 1v27 NIV “To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ, in you, the hope of glory.” It is the gospel of equal opportunity!!

  6. 10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

    Christ came to pave the way for each of our lives, not only did he die that we may have salvation but he was a living testimony of the way we should live. If we follow His example we can walk in the promises of God.

  7. V.4 but God who is rich in mercy for his great love where with he loved us….this verse spoke to me the most there have been times where if it hadn’t been for God’s mercy where would I be. I may go the wrong direction but Gods mercy is tugging at my heart. I want to do all God wants me to do.

  8. NIV 1 “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.”

    A powerful reminder of who I was at one time. We all were born into sin, disobedient and blinded by our fleshly desires. We were quick to judge and follow our natural state of sin. But now, by following Jesus, our eyes were opened, and our ears are listening to his Word. Thank you Jesus for forgiving me and accepting me as I was.

  9. 19Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

    Thank God we are all Brothers and Sisters in Him.

  10. 19-22That’s plain enough, isn’t it? You’re no longer wandering exiles. This kingdom of faith is now your home country. You’re no longer strangers or outsiders. You belong here, with as much right to the name Christian as anyone. God is building a home. He’s using us all—irrespective of how we got here—in what he is building. He used the apostles and prophets for the foundation. Now he’s using you, fitting you in brick by brick, stone by stone, with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone that holds all the parts together. We see it taking shape day after day—a holy temple built by God, all of us built into it, a temple in which God is quite at home. (MSG)
    -This reminds me of Be Church, how Jesus is the foundation and each one of us is a brick or stone being fit in. At the end though it states, “a temple in which God is quite at home,” we need to be sure that our part as a brick or stone makes God welcomed and at home.

  11. In this chapter God has done so much for us it shows that we we’re strangers and he made it to where we we’re someone. By giving his life and showing us the way through his word. But thats not all he did for us, he also gave us a home and helping us daily. But we have to let him in order for us to get the help. So be open/sensitive to God and read his word.

  12. No matter how far down you fall God will always be by your side…Verses 1-5

    The bulk of this chapter reassures me that without the bad there can be no good. We all sin. From your mistakes you learn and he uses your past to help others along the way to build relationships, not just with eachother but with him. Your past is the best witnessing tool you can give someone. Dont be ashamed of your downfalls but instead use it to your advantage to strengthen yourself, relationships, and church. Those pieces are what builds the church up. Judgement will only hinder you from your promise. Let Gods will be done. BE Church

  13. The promise of life in this chapter reveals the depth of God’s unmerited grace and favor that we by nature are so undeserving of. The new life that has been given to us is a foundation that we can build up, causing us to become part of His kingdom, fitly joined together, his workmanship, his talents and abilities in us, so that we would bring glory to Him.

  14. The Spirit will make you wise and let you understand what it means to know God.

    This portion of scripture is so powerful; we cannot attempt to know God or think we even know what it means. We have to have the Spirit of the Lord… synonymous for the HOLY GHOST!

    I need the HOLY GHOST everyday!

  15. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

    We do well to remember that there are three parts to this gift of God. 1. Grace 2. Faith 3. Salvation.

    He is showing us that it is.not because of what we do but all because of who He is.

  16. 18For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

    19Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

    To me this scripture reaffirms the oneness of God and how through His Spirit we are blood bought into the kingdom of God! No longer lost in sin we are now a part of the inheritance of Christ Jesus!

  17. 2Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

    Obedience is better than sacrifice

  18. Vs 4-8 The Lord is so amazing!! His love for us is so much more than we can even imagine. Who can separate us from the love of God? He died for us so we would live for Him. Through Christ the corner-stone which by definition is a large stone laid at the base of a building to strengthen the two walls forming a right angle. These stones in some ancient buildings were as much as twenty feet long and eight feet thick. Now Gentiles(wall 1) and Jews (wall 2) together form the Church body (building) where He dwells because He is the very foundation. Let’s Be Church by adding to the body (building) of Christ.

  19. V11 “Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands.”

    Mark 14:58 “We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.”

    Acts 7:47-48 “47 But Solomon built him an house. 48 Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet.”

    Col 2:10-12 “10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

    11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:

    12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.”

    We see the difference between the circumcision of the flesh and the circumcision of the heart. It puts into perspective what Jesus has really done for us (and not just Gentile believers but for Jewish believers as well.) V10 says “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” This workmanship was something “made without hands.” As v9 says “Not of works, lest any man should boast.” The circumcision of the flesh was something “made with hands” but the work God did was something that flesh couldn’t accomplish.

    Hands represent power, ability, etc. The works of the law were done with the hands, man’s power and ability, but the work Jesus did to provide salvation for us was not something within our ability, rather as v8 says “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.” Heb 10:4-7 “4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

    5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:

    6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.

    7 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.”

    Heb 9:12-14 “12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

    13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:

    14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”

    When Jesus came robed in flesh, He gave Himself on the cross by sacrificing the only flesh He had to give. He fulfilled His plan that was prepared from the very beginning (Rev 13:8) by giving up His desires in the flesh and fulfilling His ultimate will. He gave it all for us and asks for the same from us. He looks for us to entirely surrender our lives to Him, casting away the desires of the flesh in a circumcision of our hearts so that our lives may be conformed to His will and display the work of His hands, not our own. The softer and more pliable we are in His hands, the more our lives will reflect Him to others; the less we resist, the more our lives will show even the fine details of God’s character and a more intimate picture of Him in the same way soft clay will record even the minute, unique details of the fingerprints and handprints of the one who is handling it.

    BE Pliable in His Hands
    BE Jesus’ Workmanship

  20. Verses 1-5 in the Message Version say:

    It wasn’t so long ago that you were mired in that old stagnant life of sin. You let the world, which doesn’t know the first thing about living, tell you how to live. You filled your lungs with polluted unbelief, and then exhaled disobedience. We all did it, all of us doing what we felt like doing, when we felt like doing it, all of us in the same boat. It’s a wonder God didn’t lose his temper and do away with the whole lot of us. Instead, immense in mercy and with an incredible love, he embraced us. He took our sin-dead lives and made us alive in Christ.

    Thank you Lord for incredible love and mercy.

  21. This chapter illustrates how we (Gentiles) were granted (the possibility of) salvation, (it’s our choice). There are essentially two races the Jews and the Gentiles, which the Jews were the only ones with the chance of salvation before Jesus’s Blood sacrifice. Thank God for the Blood before which only the Jews would have been saved.

  22. vs “1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; 2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: 3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)” We were lost in sin but God in His great mercy called us out…vs “19Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; 20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; 21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: 22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.”… God is so good, let us not forget or take granted His mercy and grace, but let us be church and spread His great word…

  23. Your inner being is always going to reflect in the outside, some people try very hard to cover it but it will come out in the way you speak, behave, text or facebook, tweeter, etc. A true book will have God in the inside reflecting on the outside. When you were in the world it is obvious you will behave like the world, but once you give yourself completely to God, all it should show are the fruits of the Spirit. Matthew 7:16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

  24. 10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

    14For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

    18For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

    You develope faith, repent, get baptized in Jesus name… get set on fire with the holy ghost so what comes next? workmanship (study the bible, pray, go to church, outreach) you got to spread the butter on the bread… do his will.

  25. We keep feeding our flesh over and over again but we starve our spirit.

    This is saying we should never forget what God has done for us, and how he loves us always. this passage is also telling us to remember because of Him we are saved!
