Ephesians Chapter 4

Ephesians 4

1I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,

2With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;

3Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

4There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;

5One Lord, one faith, one baptism,

6One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

7But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

8Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.

9(Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?

10He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)

11And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

12For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

13Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

14That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

15But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

16From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

17This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,

18Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:

19Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

20But ye have not so learned Christ;

21If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:

22That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

23And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

24And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

25Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

26Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:

27Neither give place to the devil.

28Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.

29Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

30And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

31Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:

32And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

  1. This chapter shows the vast difference between someone born of the spirit that is willing to follow in the footsteps of the Lord, forsaking all others, loving Him more than father, mother, sister, brother, children, spouse and living out the Kingdom purpose in their lives, and someone who has started on the journey, but then returned back to the elements of this world, not willing to lay them down for the cause of Christ. We can be bound, or free. We can be children of Hagar (Ishmael) or we can be children of the promise (Isaac). It’s our choice. God would have us to be children of the promise, so that we can inherit the kingdom of God.

  2. Let us be careful and not find our selves letting daily activities, events, people, etc. become more important than the God we serve. I don’t want any other god but Jesus Christ. He did more for me than anything or anybody!

    What a mighty God we serve!

  3. 15But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

    The “religious” world today expresses the thoughts that if truth hurts then you are not showing “love” so therefore you have to water down what is being said so that you don’t hurt someone’s feelings. That is so contrary to the scripture. Yes we are to love, and speak with love, the sometimes the word of God (truth) hurts. It causes us to take a deep look at oursevles and use the Word as a two edge sword cutting away from us things that hinder our relationship with God. We just take down the defensiveness and let the truth work in us. If it wasn’t for love, there would be no truth, because Jesus would not have come to give us life more abundantly! His sacrifice was true love and it cost him his life. Do we think that love is not going to cost us something?

  4. This chapter reminds me of many Conferences we attend in the fact that so many subjects are addressed in a single setting.

    1. Paul addresses “Attitude” – Humility being the Kingdom attitude.

    2. “Deity” – There is ONE GOD and HIS name is JESUS!

    3. “5 Fold Ministry” – The fact that we the church will always need instruction.

    4. “Made up MIND” – Committed to the PURPOSE of the Church – Speak the TRUTH in Love out of a mind that is pure and protected.

    5. “A walk of REPENTANCE” – Living with a renewed MIND that forsakes the past and embraces the FUTURE.

    6. “The Devils place” – NOWHERE! – Give him no place.

    7. “A life of FORGIVENESS” – Never holding a grudge or being angry to the point of sin, always forgiving to not grieve the Holy Spirit.

  5. Eph.4:32 NIV. Be kind and compassionate
    forgiving each other

    With God’s grace we can give and receive forgiveness.
    Be kind one to another, tenderhearted,forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake
    hath forgiven you.

  6. Great chapter that starts with NIV 1 “As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.”

    Then ends with NIV “31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

    What a contrast, from being a prisoner in the world to being a prisoner for the Lord. Being a captive of God, is well worth it. We all should ask God to loosen those shackles and cares we encounter each and everyday. Through prayer and daily reading of the Word, we escape the worldy prison, and enter into his mighty Kingdom of freedom.

  7. To start off in vs.2 … “2With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
    Why is it so hard for us to be humble? It’s our flesh, it says to us I’m better than all people. We need to pray that God would help us not ot have this attitude. The Bible says to love your neighbor a yourself,yet we say thimgs about people that we don’t even know is true and if they were true it’s none of our busniess.
    In vs.3…3Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”
    We should be workers of peace and not strife.
    Endeavouring means to “an earnest attempt”

    4There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;5One Lord, one faith, one baptism,6One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

    Our God is ONE!!!!

    8Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive,…

    We don’t have to act like were in captivity.Why,because it says it in Vs.8 “he led captivity captive..”

  8. Neither give place to the devil…

    I know this scripture is telling us no to give the devil any place in our lives, but we need to take it a step furthere and not allow the devil any place in our city or in our world. Many times we designate certain areas as “the devils playground” we need to take it back for God the devil has power when we allow it. Lets not give him any place.

  9. To think that even in jail Paul takes the time to encourage his brother in Christ to keep walking the walk, and spreding His gospel. Encouraging them to grow in His work, to tell the truth in love so they may see the path that God has for them to walk. Paul is the perfect example that attitude can change any situation into a blessing if we stay doing Gods work as a body in unity with one purpose.

  10. v17 NIV “So I tell you this and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do in the futility of their thinking.” the NIV foot note says this –Life without God is intellectually frustrating, useless and meaningless.

  11. 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

    People say they can live for God at home and don’t need a preacher. Here is proof that that is a lie. Only when we come unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ will we ever not need one of the five fold ministry. I for one am extremely grateful for those who fill this role.

    God bless the five fold ministry.

  12. This chapter talks of how loving words affects people and how unloving things we say can hurt and destroy many. So we need to stay positive and pray. Seek him and read his word……Be Church!!

  13. “5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.”…

    vs 22-32 is the reciepe for our walk….

  14. Paul seems to really make sure the Ephesians’ understand that we are one and just as every part of our body has a function it all is connected and helps the whole body. And just like we do not harm our own physical body we shouldn’t harm each other with words or actions. We should be willing and eager to help each other just like we would help ourselves when we are sick and doctor ourselves. We should also be as Vs 2-3 (NCV)” Always be humble, gentle, and patient, accepting each other in love.3 You are joined together with peace through the Spirit, so make every effort to continue together in this way.” And also like Vs 31- 32 (NCV) “Do not be bitter or angry or mad. Never shout angrily or say things to hurt others. Never do anything evil.32 Be kind and loving to each other, and forgive each other just as God forgave you in Christ.”

  15. I like the phrase “Grow Up… Into Christ”
    Growing up has nothing to do with age, it has everything to do with maturity in Christ. Immature saints offend others, are bitter, quick to anger. Mature saints love one another, encourage one another, they speak the truth.

    I don’t want to grow up…
    I want to grow up into… Christ.

  16. This chapter instructs us how to Be-Church and how to help others so they also can Be-Church. First and foremost we must realize none of us are worthy, it is grace and mercy that opens the door. Thank God for the Blood. Jesus forgive us (me) of our (my) sins

  17. We should get ready and be happy for the lord is coming soon!

    talking about ministries!!! are u in one or MANY!!

    its talking about my one of my favorate bible studies!! How many God!
    ONE GOD!!!!!!!!!! Amen!!!!

  18. This is an awesome chapter that shows the mystery of the oneness of God and how he desires for us to walk in the same mind and unity in Christ. We may have different roles in the church but we are of one body, the body of Christ.

  19. Verses 4-6 in the Message Version say…

    You were all called to travel on the same road and in the same direction, so stay together, both outwardly and inwardly. You have one Master, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who rules over all, works through all, and is present in all. Everything you are and think and do is permeated with Oneness.

    We were called to do God’s work. We as a church need to be unified in all things in order to move forward with the vision God has given POFW.
