Ephesians 5

1Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;

2And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.

3But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;

4Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.

5For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

6Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

7Be not ye therefore partakers with them.

8For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

9(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)

10Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.

11And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

12For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.

13But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.

14Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

15See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,

16Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

17Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

18And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

19Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

20Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

21Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

22Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.

23For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

24Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

25Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

26That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

27That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

28So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

29For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:

30For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

31For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

32This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

33Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

  1. I am thankful and challenged by the clarity that the LORD gives us through Paul’s writing concerning marriage and the relationship of husband and wife.

    I am very concerned about the state of marriage in the world today; people would rather live together than commit for life, while others marry just so they can have “legal sex”, and too frequent those that are married would rather seek someone else to “make them happy” rather than focus on making their own marriage a place.

    Paul’s writing makes it very clear the specific roles for husband and wife.

    For the wife: 22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. There are some examples of failure in this area and the consequences in the bible; “Eve and Adam” and “Sarah and Abraham” just to name a couple of “failures to submit” and the great cost not only to them but to generations following.

    For the husband: 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; This seeming impossible task from the LORD is not a challenge but a command; again we find great tragedy when husbands fail to lead and love their wives as Christ loved the Church; “David sinning with Bathsheba” along with “Ananias and Sapphira” and how costly these great failures were,.

    The bottom line is this “The husband is to die to himself (will) and live to his wife and the wife is to submit to the dead (will) husband” as both follow the LORD.

    BE Church
    BE Biblical in our marriage.

  2. MSG – 1-2Watch what God does, and then you do it, like children who learn proper behavior from their parents. Mostly what God does is love you. Keep company with him and learn a life of love. Observe how Christ loved us. His love was not cautious but extravagant. He didn’t love in order to get something from us but to give everything of himself to us. Love like that.

    To imitate the life of Christ is what will help us become the invidividuals God is calling us to be. The deeds of the flesh will not operate in our lives; there will be no room for gossip, doubt, fear, ungodliness. We will not walk after carnal things, but mind the things of the spirit. We will love properly and be in propersubmission and authority to those over us. To watch His live and imitate will cause us to be a well-balanced Christian.

  3. Letting God’s light shine through me allows for others to see Him and His fullness; not me and my foolishness. Everything we do will speak for us. It will show us either having relationship with God or the world.
    I want to show God’s love everywhere that I go and in everyting I do!

  4. vs ” 22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. 24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.”…We as the church seeks to know and do the will of God with everything we do, because we want to stay submitted. How many times do we “pass as ships in the night” because we get in a routine or are simply too busy doing our own thing? Should we as families strive to know more about the others?

    vs “25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.”… Do we as men really give our all for our wives and families? When was the last time we led our families in prayer or in repentance?

    Matt. 26:38-45 is the story of the Garden where Christ prayer before he was taken to be tried and crucified. Since the deciples kept falling asleep all they got to hear was pleas for any other way of making our savlation possible. With the passion that Christ has for us, it would not be any stretch of imagination to see him also praying at that same time for the future of the church as well as what was about to happen to him. As men of God do we allow our families to see us travail with any similar perciverance? When was the last time our families got to hear us call thier names as we have our faces burried in the floor with tears rolling down our face?

    If the world around us got to see us (the church) take this attitude lives would change, families would be mended, and revival would fall all around us.

    20Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

    Sometimes we just need to speak to ourselves in a way that will not only encourage us but it will please the Lord.

    Too many psalms not being spoken and too many hymns and spiritual songs not being sung on a daily basis. All throughout the bible music and song was a powerful weapon, whether it was one man playing a harp and singing, armies shouting and blowing trumpets, or two men in a prison…

    Give thanks to God always! Sing a song, a hymn, sing a melody… get your joy back!

    Be Filled With His Spirit

  6. This chapter is essentially informing us; sin and you die, repent and you will live (all have sinned). We are clearly and undeniably told what will not enter into God’s kingdom. We are foolish to not take advantage of God’s grace & mercy while we can. If we follow Christ’s example we would have less marital, family & friendship issues simply put; “Treat others how you want to be treated”. If you want Peace Be-peaceful, if you want Joy Be-Joyful, if you want Happiness Be-Happy, if you want Jesus Be-Church. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  7. v19 “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.”
    Lord, help me to remember that I can make melody in my heart at any time.

    10Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.

    It is important that the fruit of the Spirit is evindent in our walk for as verse 10 says “Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord”. Lets lead by example!!!

  10. This chapter tells me, we all should be like children. Children have no worries, they dont judge, and are obedient. If we all lived with a child mentality, we all would get along. Our faith in God would grow, our marriages would be cemented, and judging of others would go away. What a great concept, to love and obey as children do.

  11. VS-30 We are all members of Christ body the church. but the church is the bride. where Adam declares that his wife is bone of his bone and flesh of his flesh applies to our relation to Christ.

  12. 16Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

    17Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

    Time and sin is against us constantly! God has a plan for when everything is supposed to happen but laying back and not submitting yourself under authority and ministry is slicing away at your grip on God. You must install yourself in as much as you can, God will see your good works. We must work hard and BE Church.

    Those who do not suffer with him will not reign with him…

  13. V6-8 “6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

    8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light.”

    It is an all too common snare to try to be a child of the light but walk as a child of disobedience. What we are determines how we walk, we can’t lead a double life in the kingdom of God; we are either walking in life or walking in death. Paul starts this chapter with clear direction: v1-2 “1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; 2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.” To be children of light, we must follow Christ and walk in love.

    Rom 8:6 “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.”

    Amos 3:3 “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?”

    1 Cor 6:15-18 “15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?

    16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

    17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.

    18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.”

    To walk with God, we must be spiritually minded. When we put on the mind of Christ, we come in line with God’s way and walk with Him rather than contrary to Him. This results in holiness, separation to God, and qualifies us for sonship with God. We can’t live like a devil, or think like a devil for that matter, and expect to be right with God.

    Acts 2:37-38 “37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” The first thing Peter told them was “repent”, not “get baptized” or “receive the Holy Ghost” but “repent.” God is not the problem, our sin is the problem. God made the way for us but we have to make the first move.

    James 4:7-10 “7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

    8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

    9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.

    10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.”

    We must submit our entire lives to God. James 4:7 says to “resist the devil.” Resist is #436 meaning “to set one’s self against, to withstand, resist, oppose.” We can either walk with God or the devil. When we walk with the devil, we oppose God; when we walk with God, we oppose the devil. I like how James 4:8 ties it together: “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.” As we draw near to God, He draws near to us. This comes with us repenting and cleansing our lives of sin and having our hearts fixed upon God and walking consistent with Him. The Bible makes it clear we are either carnally minded or spiritually minded, we can’t be both. To be double-minded speaks of constantly vacillating between the two. We’re spiritual one minute, carnal the next; on fire one moment, cold the next.

    Rev 3:15-16 “15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.

    16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.”

    Being lukewarm is the sickening combination of hot and cold, light and dark in one’s life, refusing to reside consistently in either state but rather switching between the two since they cannot both be in control at the same time. God would rather us be even cold than lukewarm. Think about it for a moment. He’d rather us be completely cold than constantly switching back and forth between hot and cold.

    Psa 57:7 “My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise.”

    V18-20 “18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; 19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; 20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ”

    meaning we should not yell and scream at people telling them things that are not true… we must be compassionate and loving to thers or else we will get a big wall in our face. showing them who is in us. yesterday we met many people from other churches but one group stood out the most, but only bc they were yelling at people. i saw a man yelling at a couple and he almost got punched by the husband. seeing this made my heart cry out, i truly wanted to go up to one of them and talk to them to try to get them to see wat we see but somthing inside me said that they are blinded. Right when you tryed to say somthing a wall came down and loud, mean, hatred words came out. they gave us no time to talk. God open their eyes to your love!

  15. This chapter is the how to walk in the spirit chapter. Love your wives, no unfruitful works of darkness. Give yourself to God, no drunkenness. Very practical holiness guidelines. However, none of this should be used to control, or manipulate others. The Christian walk is about the cross, the sacrifice. He didn’t die for us so we could be the.better than you crowd. Rather, he did it so we would be the least of these crowd. Without the proper attitude and humility, the lifestyle prescribed here is cosmetic and religious. With it, it is Christ like.

  16. v30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

    God has made us to be ONE body. There may be many members, but we should all have the same purpose. The Lord our God is ONE Lord and he’s coming back for ONE church. Let’s Be ready!!

    I want my life to be sweet before God. The way I act, talk, and walk. I want God to enjoy having me as His child.

  18. Message Version verses 8-10 say….

    You groped your way through that murk once, but no longer. You’re out in the open now. The bright light of Christ makes your way plain. So no more stumbling around. Get on with it! The good, the right, the true—these are the actions appropriate for daylight hours. Figure out what will please Christ, and then do it.

    Plain and simple “Just do it”. We were once darkness; but, now our light shines for Jesus! We have to let that shine brightly in everything we do.

  19. 6-7Don’t let yourselves get taken in by religious smooth talk. God gets furious with people who are full of religious sales talk but want nothing to do with him. Don’t even hang around people like that. (MSG)

    Many just go through the motions of church so they can be called christians. But we need to get out of that motive and put real passion and truely Be Church.
