2 Timothy Chapter 3

2 Timothy 3

1This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

2For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

3Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,

4Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

5Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

6For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,

7Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

8Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.

9But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as their’s also was.

10But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience,

11Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me.

12Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

13But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

14But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;

15And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

16All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

17That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

  1. Reality vs Imagination

5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

The word power in verse 5 is the Greek word

DUNAMIS – 1) strength power, ability
    a) inherent power, power residing in a thing by virtue of its nature, or which a person or thing exerts and puts forth.

This word is found also in:

    Acts 1:8 (King James Version)
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

    Acts 3:12 (King James Version)
And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk?

The word associated with being witness and miracles is Power and Holiness in Acts. Paul warned Timothy that in the last days they would have a form of church; but they would deny the power (Holy Ghost and Holiness). Paul warned from such to turn away. He also added;13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

It is not gonna get any better!

Obey EVERY word of GOD.16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

    BE Church
    BE Furnished

  2. CEV v 14 “Keep on being faithful to what you were taught and to what ”

Hold fast to God’s inspired words.(His Truth)
God has spoken and continues to speak to those
    who approach Him in faith.
“But without faith it is impossible to please
    him ” Heb. 11:6
And keep believing no matter what trouble or
    suffering comes our way.
v10 The apostle speaks of faith, patience, love
and steadfastness. These four virtues helped him survive persecutions and suffering.
v11 Yet the Lord rescued him from all those terrible trouble The Lord will do it for us too.
Ps. 46:1 ” A very present help in trouble “

  3. v1 NIV “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days” This chapter goes on to describe the world of 2011. A friend called me to day and asked me if I believed what Franklin Graham has just said regarding the nearness of the Lord’s return. I told her that I had not heard that but that my Bible reading today describes the conditions as they are in this century. WE THE CHURCH, need to ready in order to be used to win the lost.

  4. (from v2-v9)i don’t know what to think about these people, they do not want to know anything about God.i know God is love i just hope these kind of people have a godly relative somewhere…….a believer…..praying for them, lwt’s not go that we might have one…….(v12)Yea,and all that will live godly in Crist Jesus shall suffer persecution. well i didnt know that when i received Crist,i didnt know all the trouble that i was going to be facing….but “to God be the glory”cause, its worth it.but -i am not going to give up-(i dont want to…)i am more than a conquetor, and as for me and my house will serve the Lord……i believed it,so now i have to fight the good fight of faith……..be church……God bless…..

  5. NIV 2 “People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy.”

Perilous times are upon us already. This current generation, they have an attitude of me, myself and I. Political correctness has taken over our generation, and has taken God out of the equation. All they want is money, have freedom to please themselves, and no one to tell them what to do.

As Christians, we must stand firm, know God’s word and reach out to the lost. We teach God’s Word, and let them know, we all fall under God’s authority. With God, we have purpose, guidance, love and discipline.

  6. In this chapter it speaks of perilous times that will come in the last days which we now see these things coming to pass. We as a church body must be aware of these sprits so it would not ruin us or try to creep into our homes. We must stay prayed up. Be church

  7. 12Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

13But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

    14But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;

God is your path. Stick by him studying and loving his word.

God open my eyes and the ones around me to your desires of this life. Direct our paths and bring light unto our feet. In Jesus name.
    Be Church!

  8. “7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith”…according to the blue letter bible these two “were two Egyptian magicians who in the presence of Pharaoh imitated the miracles of Aaron in order to destroy his influence with the king.” This tells us that people will turn to any imaginible way to immitate the one true God, and to twist His word to fit anything they might want it to, without ever catching the true meaning of the Word of God….

  9. In the last days there is grievous times of distress. There will be an increase in evil with moral and social conditions from bad to worse. The christians challenge is not universal peace but to be true to GOD in troubled times and out reach being A wittness teach and preach the gospel

  10. We are living in a crazy world but it is up to the church to keep the faith and stay true to what has been taught to us and not waver.

  11. This chapter so depicts the world we currently live in. Lord help us to get our eyes back on your, and your desires for the Church and us, so that not only can we be ready when that great trumpet sounds, but we can take others with us.

  12. By this chapter it is obvious that we are living those exact days now. There has been a constant warning in regards to false profets, antichrist, and false doctrines in all prior chapters; in this one verse 5 “Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.” Be aware of the ones that look holy but are not, at the same time make sure you are not just acting the part. That is why we must have faith, for in faith there is strength and we are going to need that strength to endure the persecution that is coming.
17That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

Now dont be confused good works do not make us perfect but it is the belonging to God, and the Salvation of Jesus Christ that makes us Holy, apart, & perfect in God’s eyes. The good works is the evidence of our commitment to His word and the imitators of His life.

Lets BE the Church Christ needs us to BE

  13. V5 “Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.”

This is where the children of Israel found themselves in Exo 19. At that point they had begun to operate in a spirit of fear. It dovetails right in with that verse in 2 Tim 3:7 about God not giving us a spirit of fear. Since fear gives a reality without God (it takes faith to see God; with no faith but rather fear, you lose your vision of God), idols begin to crop up in the vacuum created by the absence of God. There’s a feeling that *something* is missing, so *something* must fill that place. Without the ability to see God as that missing thing, a substitute or idol will be created in His place. In Exo 19:16-20, Moses was called by God to go up to the top of Mt. Sinai, which appeared terrible to the children of Israel (Heb 12:18-19 “18 For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest, 19 And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more”.) Already, the fearful mindset of the children of Israel is being revealed.

In Exo 32:1-6, 21-24 we find that in Moses’ absence, an idol was made. In 32:1 Israel asked for idols because they didn’t know what happened to Moses. Moses was their man of God and seemingly represented God Himself to the people, so when Moses disappeared, the people (operating in fear, lack of right mind) seemed to assume God had also disappeared. To think that only shortly before this, God miraculously delivered them from bondage, the Egyptian army, and brought them through the parted Red Sea, one would seem to conclude they couldn’t possibly be thinking straight and somehow believe God has just vanished… The only leadership they were left with was Aaron, the speaker for the man of God, so they asked him to “speak” for a new god since God had “disappeared.” Moses came and found them back where he had left them. Notice even though they weren’t following God, who had brought them to that spot, they still remained in that same place and under their idol hadn’t gone anywhere (lack of progress, lack of power) but into sin (harm to themselves and others, lack oflove.) In contrast to the 10 Commandments which Moses received in the fire of God’s presence, the children of Israel received an idol from the fire of the people.

Operating in fear can produce results in our lives, but it will never be anything more than a sad, twisted imitation of God’s plan. It can only ever produce a form of godliness (both the Commandments and the idol came out of fire, delivered by a religious leader, brought to the congregation, etc) but it won’t have the power of the real thing because it denies the source of power: Jesus.

Col 2:8-10 “8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. 9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. 10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power”

  14. This chapter speaks of sadness. We are definitely close to the Lord’s return, we can clearly see what Paul wrote happening all around us more and more each day. It is crucial that we pray for the lost, each other and our Leaders (spiritual and worldly). Thank God for his Mercy and Grace, for without we would be lost forever. May the Lord guide and Bless us all in Jesus name, Amen

  15. Jannes and Jambres were Pharaoh’s magicians; they withstood Moses… The bible says when you resist truth you are like these men. Magicians = Witchcraft = Rebellion! Don’t find yourself resisting the truth or the messenger of it.

  16. Verses 14-17 in the NIV read…

“But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God[a] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

In these last days, we have to be firm in what we believe. We must be alert so that we will not fall into false teachings.

  17. v 16All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

God gives exactly what we need in order to succeed in his kingdom. If anyone ever has a problem, they can find their answer in the word of God. We have a weapon on our hand that is able to handle any situation we come up against.
