2 Timothy Chapter 4

2 Timothy 4

1I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;

2Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.

3For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

4And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

5But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

6For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.

7I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:

8Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

9Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me:

10For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia.

11Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry.

12And Tychicus have I sent to Ephesus.

13The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments.

14Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works:

15Of whom be thou ware also; for he hath greatly withstood our words.

16At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge.

17Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.

18And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

19Salute Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus.

20Erastus abode at Corinth: but Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick.

21Do thy diligence to come before winter. Eubulus greeteth thee, and Pudens, and Linus, and Claudia, and all the brethren.

22The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy spirit. Grace be with you. Amen.

  1. We must know what we believe and be able to defend the truth, as many will believe another doctrine and attempt to convince us of a lie. We also must be bold enought to speak out against such false doctrine.

  2. v3 “For the time will come that they will not endure sound doctrine…” One of the top stories when I opened my computer today was titled “Who’s in Hell.” A book recently written by a Methodist minister in North Carolina that eliminates the need for “salvation by the cross”. The crux of the article denies that any will be eternally damned and that those who live “good lives” (and I must add who will determine that status) will spend eternity in heaven. We see in this chapter that Paul is near the end of his life and still continues to hold fast to the gospel! Let’s don’t be decieved in these end times but rather be as Paul; full of faith.

  3. Sound doctorine is a must!!! Comming from a background of shaky doctorine, unsure of really what thtew word said, I appreciate the teaching of sound doctorine we are taught at every service. Many claim that they go to this church or that and that thier preacher will step on toes every now and then, but even as a child I knew that there had to be more to conviction than that. The “itchy ears” covers not only the getting told “all is ok” , “love, love, love”, but also this watered down style of preaching the word (that I grew up around)too. Everyday I rejoice in the fact that the ministers that teach the word at POFW aren’t after “itchy ears”. We must have a solid base, as Pastor taught last night, of faith in Christ Jesus, and our faith is proven many times over through the doctorine in which we choose to follow.

  4. The only way we can defend the truth is knowing the truth. We must study in depth, so when we are confronted and find ourselves in the middle of controversy we may defend it with the word. If we stay in His Word, the Truth will be proven. For it is His Word and not ours, who can argue with the Word of God?

  5. RSB v 1 In the presence of God and of Christ
Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead,
and in view of his appearing and his kingdom”

The apostle Paul reminds Timothy that he lives in the sight of God who is both observer and judge. Christ Jesus is now on his way to judge the living and the dead.
Looking for that blessed hope and the glorious appearing of the great God and our savior
    Jesus Christ. Titus 2:13

2Tim.4:1. RSB ” And his kingdom, there will be gathered those who have remained FAITHFUL.

The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: REPENT ye, and BELIEVE the

  6. 2Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.

5But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

This chapter challenges the church to be soul winners! Do the work of the evangelist! We are the ministry of God and the world is our audience. The harvest is ready. Be Church!

  7. 17Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.
God is faithful and His will won’t be thwarted; when we walk with Him He works it all out

  8. 5 But you should keep a clear mind in every situation. Don’t be afraid of suffering for the Lord. Work at telling others the Good News, and fully carry out the ministry God has given you.

    Be Church!

  9. 2Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.

This reminds me of an evangelist. One who goes to different churches. Each church is not at the same level and so the preacher needs to be sensitive enough in the spirit to preach the word.

  10. I charge thee before God….. Preach the word.
one of my favorite quotes is “preach to everyone you see, and if you have to, use words,”

  11. vs 17 “But the Lord stood with me and gave me strength, that I might preach the Good News in all its fullness for all the Gentiles to hear. And he saved me from certain death.” NLT. God gave him strenght and made him a preacher. God saved him from death.

  12. vs 13 “When you come, be sure to bring the coat I left with Carpus at Troas. Also bring my books, and especially my papers.”NLT.He wanted his coat because he was cold. He wanted his books to read. He wanted his papers to draw…

  13. One of the greatest challenges and pains of Ministry;10 For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica;

One of Pauls faithful followers backslid and forsook the work of the LORD. This world is going to pass away!

One more prayer! LORD Help ME!
14 Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works: Let JESUS reward evildoers.

    BE Church
    BE Faithful

  14. This chapter is encouragement from a tired servant, loyal to the end. May we all fight the good fight that others, which have gone on before us have. There will be victories and there will be loses however God will win the war, it is written. We must each do our part to point as many souls as possible to the cross and Jesus. We must simply Be-Church. Thank God for a Pastor that is not an ear tickler, may the Lord Bless him and you all in Jesus name

  15. The true way to BE CHURCH -AMP – 2 Herald and preach the Word! Keep your sense of urgency [stand by, be at hand and ready], whether the opportunity seems to be favorable or unfavorable. [Whether it is convenient or inconvenient, whether it is welcome or unwelcome, you as preacher of the Word are to show people in what way their lives are wrong.] And convince them, rebuking and correcting, warning and urging and encouraging them, being unflagging and inexhaustible in patience and teaching.

  16. This chapter lets us know that not every time we’re gonna win a battle, we might fall or lose one battle, but tht doesn’t mean we should give up. We need to gain strength, praise, read, seek God, and we will over come an opsticals that get in our way. So stay positive, look at your victories for encouragement..see what God helped you through and everything will get better. Keep the Faith high!!
    Be Church!!

  17. 3For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

4And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

    Here’s what a fable is…
Fable – a fictitious narrative or statement, a falsehood, a lie

People ears will itch; a nice “non-offensive” message will be preached at a “seeker-friendly” church by a “purpose-driven” speaker on a stool with a cup of coffee, and the itch will be scratched. Everyone will feel good and go home to watch some football.

Here’s the question… Was the gospel preached? Death, Burial, Resurrection? Were people hearts pricked? Did people repent of their sins? Was anyone baptized? Did anyone receive the Holy Ghost?

If the answer is yes, then itching ears were not scratched, sinners were saved.

If the answer is no… itching ears were scratched.

The Gospel is not pretty… it’s not always comfortable… but it’s always right and if anything else is preached than the Gospel whoever preaches it is accursed.

    Preach the Gospel!

  18. 14Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works:
Paul was bold to call that guy out..reminds me of the ministry of prophet Guy.

  19. V2 “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.”

Truly a call to BE Church. It’s not about an event or occasion, it’s about a lifestyle. It’s not something we put on and off like a coat, it’s about who we are. Whether in season or out of season, who we are and the very lives we lead should preach the Word, preach the true gospel to every soul we encounter. We are living epistles, what we preach goes far beyond the words we speak.

  20. Paul lets the people know that there will be a time come that people will not want instruction but what I like to call feel good messages. They will only want to hear what is pleasing to them and doesn’t bring conviction. Messages that let them stay the same. Well, that day is here. Too many churches have let down standards and great instruction on living for the Lord. I say a lot of it is because money talks and men fall into pleasing flesh.
Keep the faith and know that in due time you will have to answer for those that you have lead to Christ. I don’t want anyone’s blood on my hands.

  21. This chapter reminds us that we must keep spreading God’s message….”even if it isn’t the popular thing to do” (part of verse 2 CEV).

Verse 5 says…”But you must stay calm and be willing to suffer. You must work hard to tell the good news and to do your job well.” Trust that the Lord will equip you and be with you!

  22. This chapter tells us to keep spreading God’s word, “even if it isn’t the popular thing to do” (part of verse 2 CEV).

Verse 5 says….”But you must stay calm and be willing to suffer. You must work hard to tell the good news and to do your job well.” Trust that the Lord will equip and help you!

  23. v 7I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:

These are the words we should all be able to say. Have fought a good fight, have you finished your course and have you kept the faith? In the end our answer should be yes to all 3 questions. We still have time, question is, how much time?
