2 Peter Chapter 1

2 Peter 1

1Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:

2Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,

3According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

4Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

5And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;

6And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;

7And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

8For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

9But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

10Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:

11For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

12Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.

13Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;

14Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.

15Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.

16For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

17For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

18And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.

19We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

20Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

21For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

  1. 5And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity

    Bro. Danny Average drew these attributes and put them in a circle measuring each one from one to ten with lines representing the numbers, connected these and made the shape of a tire, and said when I’m low on one of these my tire is flat and it means I’m not going on, prevailing.

    Let’s remember this illistration, because if these be in us and abound we will never back slide. Let’s fix our flat tires and be church.

  2. v9….and has forgotten that he has been clensed from his past sins.” This letter was written as Peter was nearing the end of his life yet he does not waiver in his faith or his calling. He was reminding the saints of their calling. We have been clensed in order to serve Christ not to just sit around and wait for the coming of the Lord.

  3. Jesus has given us the promise that the more me strive to be like him he will bless us with more power to actually become more like him, leaving more and more of the things of this world behind and possessing more godly things.

  4. 5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
    6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
    7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
    8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

    A lot of people read this as a list of characteristics that a “good” Christian should posses and yes, we all should follow the written word and strive to posses this and be fruitful. What they do miss is that it is a process one can not happend until the latter has been obtained. What do I mean? A baby begins strengthening their legs muscles by kicking in her mothers womb, later by bouncing holding to your hands, then by crawling, then by standing and balancing, next thing you know they take off walking.
    According to the verse you must be delligent which means you must work at it constantly, you can not be sluthful, then it says add to your FAITH (which we all know we all have thanks to the gift God has given to all men a measure of FAITH) virtue “step 1” to the virtue, knowledge; how by reading, studying, and counseling with elders about the word of God, teach others. To knowledge temperance, to temperance patience. Some think temperance and patience are about the same but they are not one clue thing is that temperance in the majority of time is use on oneself, you have to control yourself, your flesh, your desires, due to your own provocations; while patience is the control of your flesh due to others provocations and circumstances. To patience godliness; how to become godly, follow the best example Christ. To godliness brotherly kindness, if we act like Christ that is all we will have for each other is brotherly kindness. And to brotherly kindness Charity, and GUESS WHAT… by now you are now walking and bearing fruit. Its a learning and growing process.

  5. 5And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;

    6And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;

    7And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

    8For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

    I want to be fruitful in abundance, leaping and abounding! I do not want to be unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ! Be Church!

  6. 5For this very reason, [e]adding your diligence [to the divine promises], employ every effort in [f]exercising your faith to develop virtue (excellence, resolution, Christian energy), and in [exercising] virtue [develop] knowledge (intelligence),

    6And in [exercising] knowledge [develop] self-control, and in [exercising] self-control [develop] steadfastness (patience, endurance), and in [exercising] steadfastness [develop] godliness (piety),

    7And in [exercising] godliness [develop] brotherly affection, and in [exercising] brotherly affection [develop] Christian love.

    8For as these qualities are yours and increasingly abound in you, they will keep [you] from being idle or unfruitful unto the [[g]full personal] knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).

    9For whoever lacks these qualities is blind, [[h]spiritually] shortsighted, [i]seeing only what is near to him, and has become oblivious [to the fact] that he was cleansed from his old sins

  7. Here we find the multiplication factor of FAVOR!

    2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,

    The more I know HIM, the clearer I see HIM, the deeper I love HIM. The more FAVOR I walk in and the more PEACE I live in.

    BE Church
    KNOW HIM

  8. 20Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

    21For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

    We need to be careful when we say, I think the scripture was trying to say this…..” Usually what the scripture means, is what it says.

  9. 3According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

    Through the Holy Spirit we have the power and ability, through the bible we have the knowledge and the blue print to follow, and live a godliness life!

  10. 5And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
    6And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;7And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
    …9But he that lacketh these things is blind,

  11. V5-7
    Add to your faith the virtue or courage of David; and to the courage of David the knowledge of Solomon; and to the knowledge of Solomon the patience of Job; and to the patience of Job the godliness of Daniel ; and to the godliness of Daniel the brotherly kindness of Jonathan; and to the brotherly kindness of Jonathan the love of John.8

  12. 10 My friends, you must do all you can to show that God has really chosen and selected you. If you keep on doing this, you won’t stumble and fall. 11Then our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will give you a glorious welcome into his kingdom that will last forever. (CEV)

    Be an example of God. Be Church.

  13. v4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding
    great and precious promises;

    He is faithful. He who promises has the power to
    fulfill. We have assurance of forgiveness
    and eternal life.( To those who respond to
    his calling.)
    We can be partakers of His divine nature.
    The apostle Paul says,” I live; yet not I,
    but Christ liveth in me” Gal.2:20

  14. Verse 8 is wonderful… we just went through a series on the fruit of the spirt and this verse says that if our congregation has the fruit evident in it that we will not be barren nor unfruitful. So, we will continue to have babies and have the word of God in us to feed them with knowledge.
    I can’t wait to see what God is going to do through us. We are laborers together until he comes. Be Church!!

  15. 3 We have everything we need to live a life that pleases God. It was all given to us by God’s own power, when we learned that he had invited us to share in his wonderful goodness. 4 God made great and marvelous promises, so that his nature would become part of us. Then we could escape our evil desires and the corrupt influences of this world. CEV

    We are equipped to please the King!

  16. Verses 5-8 describe true christian character and the process of building it. What i think is very important is the follow up of verse 9… if you don’t do these things you are blind, can’t see afar off, AND you have forgotten! Sadly, many. Seasone saints live in this realm of forgetfullness; somehow it seems that seniority on the local church attendance list exempts us from continuing to grow in the Lord. We must never forget how sinful, wretched, and filthy we were in our sins. Thank God for mercy.

  17. We must continue to add the things of God to our daily lives. The more we get of God the more we grow. Let your faith soar to new heights& allow God to continue to shape & mold you.

  18. 16For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

    I can’t believe how many people have fallen after seeing God’s mighty hand work in their lives and the lives of others. My God IS alive and well! Thank you Jesus for your wonder working power made manifest in our lives by the truth of your word, and the blood that you shed that we might have life, and have it more abundantly.

  19. This chapter explains what we must do to be like Christ. If we take on the attributes of Jesus than we will bear the fruit of Jesus, just as pastor preached. We must Be-Church if we are going to reach lost souls, we must also be willing to deny self, just as Jesus did. God’s Word was written when our ancestors gave of self to Be-Church. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  20. Verses 8-11 in the Message Version read…..”The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But those who fail to develop in this way are shortsighted or blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins. So, dear brothers and sisters, work hard to prove that you really are among those God has called and chosen. Do these things, and you will never fall away. Then God will give you a grand entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” Never stop growing!

  21. 9But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

    When we use these gifts that God is working in us, we are able to see what He has already brought us through, and understand that He isn’t finished with us yet.
