1 John Chapter 3

1 John 3

1Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

2Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

3And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

4Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

5And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

6Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

7Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

8He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

9Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

10In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

11For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

12Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.

13Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.

14We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.

15Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

16Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

17But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

18My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

19And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.

20For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

21Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

22And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

23And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

24And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

  1. v1 ” Behold, what manner of love hath the Father bestowed on us that we should be called the sons of God:……
Amp “See what (an incredible) quality of love the Father has given (shown, bestowed on) us, that we should (be permitted to) be named and called and counted the children of God! And so we are!…….
A love that we as humans cannot fathom yet is ours (free of charge) paid for by the blood of the Lamb. Oh what a great God we serve!

  2. God is LOVE….Father-we are his children…..obedient,sin,cleansing,we need to remember that the devil has been put under our feet…difrencess, love eachother,God our father, our judge, even Paul did’t judge himself…..God is not done yet with me..thank you Lord for open my eyes to you truth…..(2O)For if our heart condemns us,God is greater then our heart, and knows all things.thank you Lord for your grace, believing his in love and mercy all the time….

  3. 18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

This is what brings POFW marks above the rest, dont take it from me, everyone that I have invited that has taken the time to come visit has felt the love that our church has and shows for everyone. Dont let the cares of this world take that away from us. Lets continue to love, serve and teach our community about Jesus Christ and His salvation.

  4. 18My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

Be a doer of the word, Be Church!

  5. 20For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

I have always believed the hardest thing for a backslider to overcome is the self condemnation. They see themselves as sinners for what they have done and believe that the saints see them the same way. If they could only realise that god is greater than their self condemnation, they would find a great liberty.

  6. RSB v20 God is greater than our hearts.

God the all knowing is also the all – loving.
He hears us. God is a prayer answering God.

  7. VS-24
By keeping his commandments we dwell in him and he in us. The spirit that dwells in us is manifest by its fruits. If we bear the fruits of the spirit in our lives it is proof that Christ dwells in us. If we are led by the Spirit we are sons of God.

  8. Vs 18-Let us love in deed & in truth. It is easy to ‘say’ we love one another-the challenge is to ‘show’ we love one another with our actions. This is for brethren in the church and for those not yet in church…who God loves too! He hates their sins but loves them, so we too must hate their sins – but not judge the sin or the person – rather love them. It is the goodness of God that draweth a man to repent and likewise it our goodness to people – our love for them – that will draw them to us and eventually to their Savior, Jesus Christ, through us. Be Church to them.

  9. 9Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God

Wow… to think sin stops me from being a child of the King. Yet my obedience keeps me in right relationship with Him and He keeps me from sin.

  10. 14 Our love for each other proves that we have gone from death to life. But if you don’t love each other, you are still under the power of death.

15 If you hate each other, you are murderers, and we know that murderers do not have eternal life. 16 We know what love is because Jesus gave his life for us. That’s why we must give our lives for each other. 17 If we have all we need and see one of our own people in need, we must have pity on that person, or else we cannot say we love God. 18 Children, you show love for others by truly helping them, and not merely by talking about it. CEV
What motivates you? Love or Obligation? Do you do things for others out of love or is it because you feel you NEED/HAVE to do it? Let us find that same love that God has shown to us time and time again and allow that love to work through us and help those in need.

  11. V eighteen my little children let us not love in word neither in tongue but in deed and in truth. So true when you hear that your actions speak louder than your words!!!!

  12. You are not of God if you sin… AND if you love not your brother! I find it amazing that in the same breath John says your of the devil if you sin and love not your brother; once again there is a Royal trail of admonition through out the N.T. Many people think they can get by living what they think is a righteous life but have hatred and malice in their heart for their brother, sister, or even their Pastor!!! Oh my goodness, was John ever speaking prophetically… God must have shown him a glimpse of 2011 in the USA. Lord help restore “Love one TO another.”

You can’t be right with the MASTER and be wrong with your PASTOR!!!

  13. 9Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

Absence of relationship with the Lord, and His spirit in our lives, opens the door to sin. If we are prayed up and stay read up in the Word of God, we will avoid the temptation of sin because we will be quickened with the spirit of God when that temptation comes. You have to plan to sin, it doesn’t just happen. If we are spirit filled, we should be allowing that spirit to lead and guide us everyday.

  14. You will definitely hear more about this on Sunday AM!

3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

    The KEY to answered Prayer.

22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

Please GOD and keep his commandments, sounds like:

Ecclesiastes 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

I Love the consistency of the WORD of GOD!

    BE Church

  15. vs 17-18 Genuine love always results in action, not merely sentimental words (NKJV Study Bible)
If I am loving like Christ it will be evident in my actions not my words.

  16. 16 This is how we know what real love is: Jesus gave his life for us. So we should give our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 Suppose someone has enough to live and sees a brother or sister in need, but does not help. Then God’s love is not living in that person. 18 My children, we should love people not only with words and talk, but by our actions and true caring. NCV

I want God’s love living (active)in my life everyday.

  17. Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. 8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

    Do good = good
    Do bad = bad

Simple enough if we want to be righteous we need to do righteous things. He then goes on to explain how we can do that, by laying our lives down for one another.

The inescapable truth of christianity is the cross. We will either die to our own will or die to his.

  18. This chapter is about 1.Obedience and love 2.Love in action and 3.The test of belief
Chapter 3:9 his seed. The picture is of human reproduction ,in which the sperm (the Greek for “seed”is sperma) bears the life principle and transfers the paternal characteristics . cannot sin. Not a complete cessationof sin,but a life that is not characterized by sin.

  19. Real love is an action, not a feeling. It produces selfless, sacrificial giving. The greatest act of love is giving oneself for others. How can we lay down our lives? By serving others with no thought of receiving anything in return.

  20. This chapter is clear we are called God’s children if we do not sin. If we do what is right than we will be with the Lord, whereas if we sin we will be with satan. We must strive to keep ourselves free from sin through daily repentance, prayer and reading of the Word to suppress our sinful nature (all have sinned except Jesus). May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  21. v 6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

The key to refraining from sin is to abide in God. I’ve heard a lot of people say it’s hard, but the word of God tells us that his yoke is easy and burden light. When we abide in God and he abides in us, you can’t help but to come out victorious.

  22. Today as I was on my way home from work, I drove past an older man trying to hitchhike. As I drove past, I felt convicted…how can I possibly call myself a christian and NOT show God’s love and compassion to others? I turned around and picked him up, knowing that I wouldn’t be able to take him very far. His name was Hank. His engine had blown out, and he was on his way to Dallas to get to his son, who had another vehicle available for him. We chatted as I drove him to the gas station in Bluff Dale, and he thanked me for the kindness in picking him up, and I went home…and today I read this (I know, I’m a day late, but looks like I’m right on God’s time)

17But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
18My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

Sometimes we forget that little acts of kindness mean the world to other people. Do we walk past the pregnant woman who dropped something on the ground, or do we help her by picking up what she dropped? How many people have we driven past that needed a ride somewhere, who are experiencing a rough time in their life? People see the love of Christ more in our actions than in our speech. You may sound like a christian, but do you act like one? Make sure your actions line up so others see Jesus, and not our selfish selves.

  23. 16 We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person? (NLT)

  24. The beginning of verse 1 says….”What marvelous love the Father has extended to us! Just look at it—we’re called children of God! ” Thank you Lord for your marvelous love!

  25. 18My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth

    Actions speak loude than words.
