Matthew Chapter 1

Matthew 1

1The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

2Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren;

3And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;

4And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon;

5And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;

6And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;

7And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa;

8And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias;

9And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias;

10And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias;

11And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon:

12And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel;

13And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor;

14And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud;

15And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob;

16And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

17So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.

18Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

19Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.

20But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

21And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

22Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,

23Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

24Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:

25And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

  1. This chapter begins with the family tree of Jesus. Then goes into the birth of Jesus. You seldom hear the importance of Joseph but the reality is that through his faithfulness and complete trust in God, the prophetic word was fulfilled. It states that Jesus would be in the family tree of David.
    Romans 1: 2-3 (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) 3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;

    And in Vs 20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

    Joseph was the descended of David. I’m thankful for Joseph’s faithfulness and trust and that Gods spoken word will not return back to him void
    Isa 55:11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

    There are prophetic words of a great harvest that have been spoken over our great city that have yet come to pass. And its our time! Let’s be church and believe that through Jesus Christ POFW has No Limits! Let’s claim the prophetic word that has been hovering this city for years!

  2. v24 Thr teaching that mary remained a virgin all of her life is disproved by the consummation of their marriage mentioned ln this verse. Other references which indicate that had children by Joseph are Matthew 12:46;13:55,56; Mark 6:3; John 7:3,5 ; Acts 1:14 ; 1 Corinthians 9:5; and Galatians 1:19.

    • Based on the BIBLE she was a virgin.

      18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

      MSG Version
      18-19The birth of Jesus took place like this. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. Before they came to the marriage bed, Joseph discovered she was pregnant. (It was by the Holy Spirit, but he didn’t know that.) Joseph, chagrined but noble, determined to take care of things quietly so Mary would not be disgraced.

      • I think what he was saying was *not* that she wasn’t a virgin when she conceived of the Holy Spirit and birthed Christ but that afterwards she didn’t *remain* a virgin for the rest of her life. Some teach that she was a lifelong virgin, but obviously that’s not true if Jesus had half-siblings (born also of Mary); her state of virginity was extended for a season so God’s Word could be fulfilled, but it wasn’t lifelong. I believe perhaps his reference to v24 was a typo and that he intended v25?

  3. This chapter helps us to understand the importance of our genealogy; you never know who will come out of your family.

    Marriage tip of the DAY:
    19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.

    Joseph had so much respect and love for Mary that his desire was to keep her from being in position to be ridiculed.

    Husbands and wives should do everything in their power to protect each others integrity and character.

    BE Church at HOME

  4. V.21 And she shall bring forth a SON, and thou shall call HIS NAME JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Praise the LORD, I REJOICE IN THIS VERSE. as the scripture says in Luke 19:10 for the SON OF MAN IS COME TO SEEK AND TO SAVE THAT WHICH IS LOST. THATS US!!! His desire to save us from our sins (death). As John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends. He (Jesus) gave it all.for us. Let this be our hearts desire, to continue to give, that others may be saved through the preaching of this gospel!!!! Be Church!!

  5. 20But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream,…

    If we are willing to listen to God He will tell us what to do in times of trouble.There was a reason why God chose Joseph to be Jeses’ “stepfather.” I believe that it was because he was a praying man,one who knew how to get ahold of God.

  6. Joseph had to let God use what he loved most… Sometimes what we think is ours what is most precious to us God will take it and use it. Is there anything in our lives that we’re not willing to let God have and use?

  7. v 20 “And while he thought on these things, behold the angel of the Lord, appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph , son of David, Fear not to take unto thee, Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
    God has a purpose and a plan for our lives. There are times when situations appear to be the very worst but the promise from God is that we “FEAR NOT”. It is in these times that his presence overshadows us.

  8. Joseph, a great example of a husband loving his wife as Christ loves the church!
    24Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:

    25And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

  9. In the beginning of this chapter Matthew is establishing that Jesus was truly a descendant of David by following the lineage of Joseph. Joseph was not Jesus’s biological father but he was still his father and he was a great man.
    Joseph did not only love and protect Mary but he also obeyed God and respected and did not take away from the prophecy of Isaiah that a virgin will bring forth the savior of the world. `

    • I remember being told as a teen…The only way He could be human was to be born of a women, the only way He could be sinless was to be born not of a man, and the only way He could be King was to have God as His Father.

  10. I’m so thankful we are a ” chosen generation,
    a royal priesthood”, ” we are His very own people”
    Thankful for Joseph character ” alot to say there”
    He was just man because fo his righteousness
    angels ministered to him.
    LORD I PRAISE YOU and THANK YOU FOR
    YOUR SWEET NAME JESUS!!!
    OUR SAVIOUR
    EMMANUEL ” GOD WITH US ”
    HE IS FAITHFUL !!!

  11. The beginning of this chapter shows God’s promise to Abraham is coming to pass!
    “…in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed” (Gen. 26:4)

  12. 21And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
    22Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
    23Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
    What a miracle and a blessing. A great big God robed Himself in flesh to be born of a virgin to come save His people from their sins. And they called Him Emmanuel, meaning God with us. God is still with us, and in us when we receive the Holy Ghost.

  13. Wow, this chapter shows the genealogy of those in the old testatment who were preserved or their steps ordered so that the Christ could be born as foretold in the OT. The intricate detail of God at creation let’s us know that He has plans for each of us, even if it takes years for us to mature to the place where those plans can come to pass.

  14. The role of Joseph is one of submission, trust, and obscurity. He could have stoned Mary, but he would have killed not only one chosen by God but also the Promise within her. He could have put her away quietly even, but that would have kept Mary from being in Bethlehem when she gave birth and thus not fulfilling prophecy. But he didn’t. He submitted to the will of God, trusted in God despite the reproach and social stigma of taking a wife whom others assumed wasn’t a virgin, and took a place out of the spotlight because that was the place God chose for him.

    Luke 22:42 “Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.”

    Romans 15:3 “For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.”

    Colossians 3:2-4 “2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For ye are dead, and YOUR LIFE IS HID WITH CHRIST IN GOD. 4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory”

    Often overlooked, but what a man indeed. We are accustomed to the Proverbs 31 “virtuous” woman, well Joseph is the Matthew 1 “just” man. We often think of Mary as being a great, virtuous woman (and indeed she is a great example for women) but the Bible identifies her as a woman highly favored (Luke 1:28) meaning it wasn’t so much about what she did or who she was, it about the fact that God had chosen her. But Joseph was specifically identified as “just.” His role may seem small, but he provides a great example.

  15. Abraham, isaac, Jacob, Joseph……Jacob, Joseph, Jesus

    I imagine God really wanted us to see the similarities between Jesus and Joseph from Genesis by giving Jesus Joseph as a father.

  16. I tried to look for the numeric symbol of the number 14, I found Complete Spiritual Perfection since is the double of 7, Incarnation of the Spirit, and Promises made flesh. They all had some scriptual support as gen 31:41, Gen 1:2, Matt 1:17, Luke 2:14, Eph. 2:14, Col 1: 12-21, Gen 46:19-22.

    Is mind boggling that on this chapter it talks about 3 intervals of generations, all 3 are of 14 generations. There are 3 meanings that correltate with the characteristics of Jesus. Jesus is Complete Spiritual Perfection, Jesus is God made Flesh, Jesus is Promises made flesh. JESUS IS AN AWESOME GOD!!!

  17. 21And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

    22Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,

    23Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

    Emmanuel, God with us! Jesus the greatest name I know! So thankful for the birth of my savior! God is with us!

  18. Joseph faced a difficult choice after discovering that Mary was pregnant. Perhaps Joseph thought that he had only two options: divorce Mary quietly, or have her stoned, but God had a third option, marry her. In view of the circumstances, this had not occurred to Joseph. God often shows us that there are more options available than we think. Although Joseph seemed to be doing the right thing by breaking the engagement, only God’s guidance helped him make the best decision. That did not make it an easy decision. Consenting to marry Mary surely cast doubt on is own innocence regarding the pregnancy, as well as leaving them both with a social stigma they would carry for the rest of their lives. Yet Joseph chose to obey the angel’s command. We must always seek God’s wisdom and then be willing to follow through no matter how difficult it may be.

  19. Joseph didn’t want to make a public spectical of the woman he loved and until the angel spoke to him to “fear not” to take her for his wife, he was considering doing things privately. How many couples today air their ‘dirty laundry’ for all to know, voicing their dissatisfaction for one another openly to other people! Joseph’s example should show us to keep our thoughts / actions private! Thank God Joseph did! How different this story would read if he broadcast his doubts, hurt, shame and anger only to find that Mary was the chosen one to bear the Christ child-and she was completely without fault!

  20. This chapter shows two fulfilled prophesies. The first where Abraham was told he would be the father of many nations (Romans 4:18). The second in verse 23; “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us”. God’s Word does not lie, we must study it more to show ourselves approved and we must Be-Church to a hungry mislead world. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  21. three 14’s, but only a total of 41 names. I have been intrigued with this for some time. The book of the generation of Jesus Christ. The other place in scripture that begins “the book of ” is with Adam, but it says “generations” plural, but with Jesus Christ it is singular. Could it be that he is counted both before the cross, and after the cross. This would make 42 generations. In Matt. 16 the disciples were told to tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ. Then when Peter preached in Acts 2, “let Israel know assuredly that this Jesus whom you crucified, him God has made both Lord, and Christ”. A seed shall serve him, it shall be counted as a generation. Strongs shows that the word “generation” could be translated
    “genesis”.

  22. In this chapter, Joseph had a big decision to make and we see in verses 24-25 MSG what that was…..”Then Joseph woke up. He did exactly what God’s angel commanded in the dream: He married Mary. But he did not consummate the marriage until she had the baby. He named the baby Jesus.” He listened and obeyed the command.
