Matthew Chapter 2

Matthew 2

1Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

2Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

3When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

4And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.

5And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,

6And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

7Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.

8And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.

9When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.

10When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

11And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh.

12And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

13And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

14When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:

15And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.

16Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying,

18In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.

19But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

20Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child’s life.

21And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.

22But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee:

23And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.

  1. Lord help me to be aware of the things that are deceptive that would want to destroy the spirit of God in our lives. Just like Herod sought to kill the Christ child that was born, so the enemy of our soul seeks to kill the spirit of God with carnality, deception, evil and even time wasters that steal our prayer and study time. Help us to be Church and be continually aware.

  2. Joseph is a great example of obedience. Every time he is told to act he simple follows the instructions. Through his obedience our Savior was protected. Obedience = Proctection

  3. This chapter is filled with testimony of the leading of the Spirit of GOD; and how he desires to lead our lives today. The fulfillment of their steps being ordered of the LORD.

Along with the attitude in how we should approach the LIGHT of the world.
10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

    Also:
The example for worship set in the first worship service recorded in the bible.

11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh.

Humility and Offering. Always bring an offering to the HOUSE of the LORD.

  4. I am so thankful that God chose to make Himself flesh and dwell among us, for it was the beginning of our salvation. I am also thankful that Joseph and the Wise men heeded the warnings in their dreams. Some people think dreams are just that dreams and some are; but I also believe that our God still speaks to men by dreams and we should pray for discernment and follow the signs and warning that our Lord send us.

  5. This chapter reminds us of prophecies from the Old Testament and shows us that they have come to pass. God’s Word is true.

  6. What an awesome illustration of the importance of not only hearing the voice of God but also obeying His voice.
This chapter also showed me the three things needed to stay in under the protection of God:
    1. A open ear to hear the voice of God.
    2. Submission: He can not protect us unless we are willing to yield to Him.
    3. Obedience: protection requires obedience to his guidance.

  7. There are things that will try to stop what God is doing with us but we need to stay strong and follow what God says.

  8. I find it interesting that God told Joseph to take Jesus and Mary to EGYPT. We need to listen to what God is telling us to do,It might just save us. Be watchful,Be sensitive to the Spirit.

  9. ILLUSTRATION

Frankincense was an expensive incense usally contained in a sealed jar. The gifts have been seen as symbolic of the magis recognition of Jesus deity although this is not necessarily implied . What the gifts did was fiance the flight to Egypt. GOD STILL PROVIDES.

  10. A study of who the Magi were reveals the religion to be based on occult and sorcery Rooted in Iran There religion was based on astrolgy. We get the word magic from them. It only proves “Every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord!

  11. When Joseph was afraid , he did not move forward until he heard from God. As spoken earlier-obedience equals protection.

  12. amazing how right from birth Jesus was already sought after to be killed. how can people love the things of this world which is so wicked and hate that which is pure and can bring peace and joy in to their life?

  13. There were a few prophecies fulfilled in this chapter concerning the young child Jesus that had to do with where He went and where He came out of.
5And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,6And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.
15And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.
23And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.
These were fulfilled because Joseph listened to what he was told by God and followed through. Just because a prophecy goes forth doesn’t mean it just automatically happens. We can’t just sit back and wait for everything to just fall into place, we have to listen for, and to the voice of God and be willing to put action with it, and move into the direction He tells us to.

  14. Bethlehem in Judah, Egypt, Nazareth in Galilee… there are many “beginnings” from which the Messiah came. Surely the many prophecies stumped those studying the scriptures as they tried to figure out how the Messiah could come from Bethlehem, Egypt, and Nazareth… These places seem unlikely but Isaiah 53:2 explains “For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground…”

Our circumstances may seem difficult, our beginnings obscure and/or unexpected, and our supporters seemingly few, yet through Christ it doesn’t matter how dry our ground is we can grow as a tender plant to fulfill His will. We say it about trials, but it applies to callings as well; if God brought you to it, He’ll bring you through it. Sometimes our beginnings seem to defy the path God has chosen for us, yet His own story reveals to us those difficult circumstances are no problem for Him, just as He will make them no problem for us if we will trust in Him and rely completely on Him.

Psalm 18:29 “For by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall.”

  15. This chapter illustrates the power of God. Only the deceiver satan and his followers would fear a child enough to do what Herod did. This was done because satan knew the child was God almighty robed in the body of a baby. We must make ready, for satan knows the Word of God and he knows what is to come, his one purpose is to take all the souls he can with him to the lake of fire. We must join with the man of God and Be-Church to all that will listen. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  16. Herod knew who to ask about the King of the Jews. The Jewish leaders knew the answer and yet they didn’t believe it was true as Herod appears to have.

  17. This chapter continues to show the obedience of Joseph. When he was told to get up…….he got up, when he was told to move…….he moved, when he was told to stay until further notice…….he waited! When we are obedient, the Lord will direct us.
