Matthew Chapter 5

Matthew 5

1And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:

2And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

3Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

5Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

6Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

7Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

8Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

9Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

10Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

12Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

13Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

14Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

15Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

17Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

18For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

19Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

20For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

21Ye have heard that it was said of them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:

22But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

23Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;

24Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

25Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.

26Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

27Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:

28But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

29And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

30And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

31It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:

32But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

33Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:

34But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne:

35Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.

36Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.

37But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

38Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:

39But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

40And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.

41And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.

42Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

43Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

44But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

45That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

46For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

47And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?

48Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

  1. 22But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

    Raca – stupid

Our words are very powerful. Picture this next time an insult is chosen to be used on someone else.

You are saying they are ________!

That’s right. You are basically using the power of your tongue to command them to be what you call them.

Statistics prove that calling someone fat, stupid, dumb, or anything else derogatory or negative, will cause the hearer to believe they are, and live like they are. Our subconscious is very powerful.

Instead let’s speak life. “You are an overcome! You are very intelligent. God has given you great talent.”

We are called to encourage and uplift.

    We are family. 🙂

  2. V16 “Let your ight shine before men so that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” How easy it can be to get caught up in “the doing.” Easy for pride to say “look what I am doing for the Lord”. My prayer is that every bible study I teach shine the spotlight on God!

  3. 33Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:

34But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne:

35Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.

36Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.

37But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

Only God can swear, cause He can!

    Hebrew 6
13 For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself,
14 Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee

  4. Let me tell you why you are here. You are here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God flavor of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You have lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage.V.14 Here is another way to put it ; you’re here to be light, bringing out the God colors of this world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this as public as a city on a hill. V 16 Now that I put you on a hill top, on a light stand–SHINE! Keep open house be genourous w/ your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God this generous father in heaven.

  5. What a chapter for us to take in! We must be careful not to look at this chapter as a bunch of rules but as principles. We can’t allow ourselves to be overwhelmed with the expectations of God and give up. If we will only stay in prayer, fasting, and reading of his word then there is no reason that we won’t be able to live a holy and acceptable life. The flesh will try and rise up against your spiritual being but the help of the Lord is always there! We are the Church!

  6. 14Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Let the world know who Jesus is, Be the Light!

  7. v 14Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

We must let our light shine at all times, no matter what the circumstance are. As a child of God, darkness should find no comfort with us.

  8. 47And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?

we should treat everyone the same.

  9. CEV v3 God blesses those people who depend on Him.
They belong to the kingdom of heaven!
RSB. The Beatitudes (blessed means happy”)
describe the inner qualities of a follower of
Christ and promise him blessings in the future.

As Pastor preached on Sunday nite we must become as little children and learn to depend
    Only In God.
    This is true happiness

We must be humble, forgiving, pure and do right

  10. vs 16 explained in NKJV Study Bible like this…”The believer does not have inherent light; rather we have reflective light. As we behold the glory of the Lord, we reflect it. Therefore, we need to make sure that nothing comes between us and the Lord’s light.”

  11. 14Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
15Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

  12. 16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

  13. V3 NLT “God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.”

One of the very first things we have recorded of Jesus preaching in His earthly ministry is “blessed are those who realize they need Me.” Perhaps one of the greatest needs of mankind is to realize our need for Him. We can’t see Him very well as our Savior if we don’t realize we need saving, or as our Healer if we don’t realize we need healing, or as our Redeemer if we don’t realize we need redeeming…

Eph 5:13 “But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.”

John 3:19-21 “19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.”

It takes coming face to face with Truth, and being able to make the decision to either turn to Him or turn back away.

  14. 13Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

14Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

We are the salt of the region of Fort Worth. We cannot let our life lose the flavour of God. If it is to shine forth in the City to point people to the truth, it must be activated in our life on a daily basis. We must possess the fruits of the spirits, drawing people to the goodness of God by our sweet spriit, gentle countance and Christ like Spirit and attitude.

  15. This chapter is inspiring and revealing. We should all hope to hear “Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven”. We should also be mindful and adhere to the remainder of the chapter; “but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also”. If we learn to apply all of the Word of Christ to our lives and teaching of Pastor to our lives, than we will Be-Church. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  16. 14Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

we must remember that peoplpe are watching our every move

  17. 13 “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.
14 “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.
15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.
16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

Be Salt, Be Light, Be Church!

  18. What a revealing and enlightening chapter. We are blessed when…….

I love verse 3 MSG…..”You’re blessed when you’re at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule.” Lord, less of me and more of you. It is all about you Jesus….thank you.
