Matthew Chapter 6

Matthew 6

1Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.

2Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

3But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:

4That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

5And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

6But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

7But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

8Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

9After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

10Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

11Give us this day our daily bread.

12And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

13And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

14For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:

15But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

16Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

17But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;

18That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

19Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

20But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

21For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

22The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.

23But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!

24No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

25Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?

26Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

27Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?

28And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

29And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

30Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

31Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

32(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

33But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

34Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

  1. I know from a first hand perspective what the scripture means when it says If you pray in your closet ,He reward you openly. I personally believe that it means when we pray don’t say woe is me and make it known , yet keep it a secret between you and God. He knows all things. Then He will answer your prayer openly.

  2. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

  3. 19Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

20But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

21For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also

Our actions here on earth is showing to God and others where our treasure is. Lord, help my treasure to be in Heaven and let my actions prove to you that I’m living out my earthly purpose for your Kingdom.

  4. v20 ” But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven”

” Set your affections on things above”
Be rich in good works ready to distribute,”
    Of His righteousness, love,kindness,
    faith,and truth..

  5. 28And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

29And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

    the beauty in the simple

  6. Secret prayer, secret giving, secret fasting… open rewards. Do these things to please men… congrats, there’s your reward.

  7. We could label this the chapter of Christian principals to practice on a consistent basis.

Also some very keen advice for LIVING
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Seek GOD with everything that is in you and don’t worry about a thing.

  8. This chaater highlights the key to realizing what it means to have “life and life more abundantly.” There’s more to life than just what’s here in this world, more than just what we see, feel, etc. Abundant living comes only through God, who is not of this sinful world, so for us to walk in abundance we must go beyond this world and its ways and abide in Him, and Him in us. He’s looking for a holy bride, a pure bride…

We cannot trust ourselves in our humanity to lead ourselves in righteousness, we need Jesus. Our natural mind struggles to comprehend His ways (importance of having the mind of Christ) and even being in Christ we grow up in Him in maturity and won’t understand all things right off the bat. It’s been said recently, we may not always understand but that’s where trust and obedience comes in. Jesus said “I am the way”, we must learn in our relationship with Him to trust and obey so even if we have not yet grown in Him into a place of understanding concerning a certain matter, we can still allow Him to lead us.

The real test of relationship and submission is when you come to a place of being called to do something you don’t want to do. The way of abundant living leads us to the cross, if we will answer Jesus’ call to “follow Me” we must reply “not my will but Yours be done” and die to self. But oh how great the benefit is, to rise with Christ if we will be buried in death with Him…

  9. This chapter illustrates humbleness and compassion. If we go to church to be the center of attention (seen by others) than we are only misleading ourselves. If we do as the Word instructs than we will truly be blessed, we should never forget it is ALL about Jesus and no one or nothing else. We should never forget ALL of us are equally lost sinners without the Blood of the Lamb, thank God for the Blood. We must never forget and encourage one another for God will take care of those that are faithful and true to him and his servants. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  10. vs 1-4 I have heard tought on when people give their tithes and offerings, and while I agree that we shouldn’t make a big scene about our giving, we are able to stay accountable when we put it in a marked envelope. This not only will prove our faithfulness but also keep us honest our giving….

  11. 22 “Your eye is a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is good, your whole body is filled with light.
23 But when your eye is bad, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!

This reminds me of that old sunday school song…
“Oh be careful little eyes what you see”
And it is very true to be careful what you let your eyes see becuase like Pastor says good and bad cant’ come from the same place.

  12. This chapter is summed up in verse 34 MSG…..”Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.” Keep you focus on Jesus and pleasing him.
