Luke Chapter 5

Luke 5

1And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,

2And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.

3And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.

4Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.

5And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.

6And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.

7And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.

8When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.

9For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:

10And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.

11And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.

12And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.

13And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him.

14And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.

15But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.

16And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.

17And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.

18And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him.

19And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus.

20And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.

21And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?

22But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts?

23Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk?

24But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house.

25And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.

26And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day.

27And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me.

28And he left all, rose up, and followed him.

29And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them.

30But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?

31And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.

32I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

33And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink?

34And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them?

35But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.

36And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.

37And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish.

38But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.

39No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.

  1. 8When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.

9For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:

10And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.

They were obedient to Jesus (they didn’t have to, they didn’t know him), because of it they were rewarded handsomely. Its awesome when we/people acknowledge that Jesus is Lord after a miracle. Its like scales are falling off our eyes, and we can now see. So I can imagine how this rocked Simon Peter’s world. Jesus astonished also two others, but Simon was the one to admit that he was a sinful man. Of course Jesus knew that, but true honest repentance before the knees of the Lord is heart melting. A prophesy is shared with him, not to worry, but that from now on he’s gonna be a fisher of men. He will follow Jesus and spread the Word!

  2. v16 ” And He withdrew himself into the wilderness
    and prayed.”

Thank you, Heavenly Father for your love and compassion. As you respond to our thirsty souls.
As you fill us again from that flowing river from on high.
You give us your peace, rest, strength, and stabilize us
and fill us with your power.
Everybody knows this is a troubled day when we all need to be comforted.
We need the Holy Ghost the comforter to comfort our
    Hearts and souls.
We are suppose to possess something to give to a service, the hurting, to this city. ( not just soak it up.)
The whole point is HE desires to use us and we need
    His Power.
When His Spirit comes it makes all the difference
    In the world.
Are you thirsty? Receive Ye The Holy Ghost!!!
Thank you , Pastor for that great message.

  3. There is so much here in this chapter.Verse 22 says alot that He perceived their thoughts. God is a all knowing God looking for a church without spot or wrinkle. Thank you Lord that we may drink from the water often.

  4. v 5 NIV “Simon answered, “Master, we have worked all night and haven’t caught anything. But becasue you say so I will let down the nets.” He was an experienced fisherman and knew that the likehood of catching fish at this point was slim. However, he obeyed Jesus and the results were more than he could contain in his nets.I want this to be my attitude: No matter how hopeless a situation may see, I want to see the victory through the eyes of Christ. And that vision calls for FAITH AND OBEDIENCE.

  5. CHOSEN VESSEL

2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.

3 And he entered into one of the ships,

I have often pondered what influenced JESUS to choose Simon’s ship. I believe we see here that Jesus will choose a vessel with potential. There were 2 ships there only 1 was chosen.

OH the value and benefits of being CHOSEN! The VESSEL chosen was used – put to use and BLESSED – through obedience was filled overflowing with MORE than ENOUGH.

My prayer today is to be the CHOSEN VESSEL of GOD

    USE me LORD
    BE Church

  6. Luke 5
______ (V1)And it came to pass that,as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God,he stood by the lake of Gennesaret…
You are blessed if you get to go to church every sunday, please (don’t take it for granted)cause there’s other people who wishes to be there (to hear the word of God)and they can’t…..
(v16)and he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.
Jesus always “had”to made sure to make time to pray:….
    (

  7. Jesus saw the opportunity to proclaim the word and looked around for the something to use to best meet the need of the moment. He saw a boat and preached from there. Simon had allowed this and he then got a blessing beyond measure for allowing Jesus to use what he had to offer. We too should allow Jesus to use what we have for the kingdom and we will recieve a blessing.

  8. 32I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Recognizing that we are sinners and of our need to repent brings Jesus into the situations of our life. Believing he is able to do abundantly more than we can ask or think-according to the power that worketh in us- makes us candidates for a miracle.
By teaching this to those not yet in church we provide hope. It is also what builds the church. People need help all around us-they just don’t know that Jesus is where they should turn to for help. Our testimonies point them in the right direction. Witness to someone today when you hear them talk about their problems. Give them hope in Jesus.

  9. 37And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish.

38But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.

Everyday is an opportunity to put the new wine in a new bottle. Dying daily to sin and stirring up the gift within us allows us to carry new wine. The world needs the new wine and we are the ones to bring it to them. The world is thirsty for Galilee. Be Church!

  10. Verses 5-7 in the Message Version read…”Simon said, “Master, we’ve been fishing hard all night and haven’t caught even a minnow. But if you say so, I’ll let out the nets.” It was no sooner said than done—a huge haul of fish, straining the nets past capacity. They waved to their partners in the other boat to come help them. They filled both boats, nearly swamping them with the catch.” The blessing was a response to their obedience.

Verse 31-32 read….”Jesus heard about it and spoke up, “Who needs a doctor: the healthy or the sick? I’m here inviting outsiders, not insiders—an invitation to a changed life, changed inside and out.” An invitation to a changed life…..an invitation we need to extend to this city!

  11. When Jesus told Simon, “Launch out into the deep, and let down your net for a draught,” Simon told Jesus that they had toiled all night and caught nothing. Nevertheless, at Jesus’ word, he let down the net. The catch was so great that he had to call for help, and it was so much that both of the boats began to sink.

Two thoughts come to my mind. One is that the reason why they were so blessed in their catch was because of the act of OBEDIENCE toward the Word that was spoken by Jesus. How many times do we miss out on a blessing because we don”t OBEY the Word of God or the voice of God? Secondly, spiritually speaking, how long has it been since we toiled all night in prayer for a great harvest for souls?

Let’ Be Church by Obeying God’s Word, Trusting Him when He speaks, and Prayer.

  12. NLT 29 Later, Levi held a banquet in his home with Jesus as the guest of honor. Many of Levi’s fellow tax collectors and other guests also ate with them. 30 But the Pharisees and their teachers of religious law complained bitterly to Jesus’ disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with such scum?[e]”

31 Jesus answered them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. 32 I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent.”

God seeks those in need. Its up to the righteous to reach out, invite and bring the lost to Church. We all were lost but now we are found. Thank you Jesus for finding me…

  13. Vs 4-6 They let down out their nets and obeyed “at thy word”

1 Kings 18:36 Elijah repaired the alter and obeyed the Lord “at thy word”

The Lord is calling POFW to a deeper and new dimension!

Let’s Be Church “at thy word”

  14. SUMMARY
Christ teaching from Peters boat. The miraculous draught of fishes. Called to be fishers of men. Cleansing the leaper. Palsied man healed. Persecution foretold. New wine in old bottles.

  15. 8When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.

10…. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.

Jesus was drawing Peter to him even though Peter did not feel worthy to be near him. Jesus always offers opportunity for us to be close to Him.

  16. 5 “Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.”
6 And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! (NLT)

If Jesus says to do something then do it! If we listen just look at how great the result can be!!

  17. when we have a real encounter with God it would seem that the real awesome fear of God would be our first response. Simon was filled with fear when He saw the huge amount of fish that Jesus supplied. The people were filled with fear as they pondered what they had just witnessed. Once I experienced God in such an awesome manner that for 3 days I trembled in fear of God for I to am a sinner. On the third day he spoke to me again as I spoke to him in the Spirit. He said I am not looking at your outside appearance but the inward man! Isaish said.’I am a man of unclean lips and I live among people of unclean lips. And my eyes have seen The King the Lord Almighty!!’Isa.6:5. We must always stay humble before The Lord for we can do nothing without Him.My Joy has been tempered by a burden forthe lost. How can we be content when many are called and few are chosen? When only a remnant will bw saved? When Hell hath enlarged itself? My joy is mixed with sorrow!!

  18. 5And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.

Obedience is the key. Sometimes I find myself where I dont want to do something, and yet out of obedience I do it. Obedience is greater than sacrifice. Let’s obey God’s Word and our pastor that He has apointed for us.

  19. A man full of leprosy came to Jesus and humbly asked Him if it is your will you can clean me! And Jesus said I will, but instead of saying “be healed” He touched him.Jesus He did come to the sinners and sick people. We have to have mercy in Jesus name.

  20. 11And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.

Wasting no time all three forsook EVERYTHING they had just to be with Jesus… That is Hunger…

  21. 4Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.
5And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.
6And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.

Nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. Simon did not understand why he was going to let down his net after catching nothing all night but he obeyed. And because he obeyed he found himself walking with and learning from Jesus Christ Himself.

We may not understand somethings God asks of us but ,nevertheless at thy word I will. Needs to be our response.

  22. 31And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.

32I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

We all need Jesus, This chapter reveals miracles but as revealed to our church tonight those miracles come after prayer, lets be a praying church

  23. 21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?

They are correct. Only God can forgive sins, even when he is clothed with humanity.

The word says he was in all ways tempted like us yet without sin.

  24. 31And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.

32I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. KJV

Reminds me of the saying, “You don’t get good to get God, but get God to get good!”
For those that think they’ve got it all together and don’t need “fixin'”, God has no time for. He is searching for hungry souls that will allow him to work in their lives and fix that which is broken.

    • Amen! I’ll just tag team with my wife on this scripture. To all HOSPITAL STAFF (POFW): there is an epidemic of sin in this city… be on high alert, much care will be needed. Direct all patients to THE physician!

  25. Jesus was all about ministering to the needs of others. To Be Church we have to get our eyes off of us and on the “others” of our community. The answer to meeting their needs can be found in this verse – And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed. Pray Saints Pray!

  26. Peter was to be the leader once Jesus’ earthly ministry was complete and it’s interesting to see from the beginning how Jesus treated him specially. Matthew and Mark record him and his brother as the first two disciples called; John shows a special encounter and personal relationship kindled from the very beginning when he met Jesus; and Luke writes of how out of the four fishermen Jesus called in the beginning, His address was to Peter (He called Peter to “launch out” and while He told them all they would be “fishers of men”, He told Peter specifically not to fear because from then forward he would “catch men.”) This pattern continues as Jesus further builds the special relationship with Peter so Peter can become what Jesus called him to become. A nod to what Sis Porche taught, it was relationship that would bring Peter from a worldly fisherman telling Jesus to depart from him to being the Pentecost preacher and church leader.

  27. This chapter describes a hunger for the Word. They were so hungry for the Word that God had to put some distance between them, just so he could teach. We need Jesus more than ever today, purely because society thinks we don’t. Whenever we come to a place where we; pull Jesus out, turn away or don’t care, just as our world and nation are doing than that is when we must fight harder. This is why we must Be-Church now, before it is too late and we lose our right to. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  28. 4Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.

God wants to do something in this city. We must be ready for the amount of souls God is going to bring in, Revival time is NOW!!!

  29. 5And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.

6And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.

7And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.

They had worked all night and caught no fish surely they where tired, but had faith in Jesus and put down there nets and received a great blessing
