Luke Chapter 19

Luke 19

1And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.

2And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.

3And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.

4And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.

5And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.

6And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.

7And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.

8And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord: Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.

9And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.

10For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

11And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.

12He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.

13And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.

14But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.

15And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.

16Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds.

17And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.

18And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds.

19And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities.

20And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin:

21For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow.

22And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow:

23Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury?

24And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.

25(And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds.)

26For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him.

27But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.

28And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem.

29And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,

30Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither.

31And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him.

32And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them.

33And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt?

34And they said, The Lord hath need of him.

35And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon.

36And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way.

37And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;

38Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.

39And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.

40And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.

41And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,

42Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.

43For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side,

44And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.

45And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought;

46Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.

47And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him,

48And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.

  1. v5 NIV “….Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” v6″And he made haste and came down and received him joyfully.”
    The day of Zacchaeus’ visitation.
Scripture says that Zacchaeus was chief of publicans . And He was rich. Yet, something in his life was empty as we see him doing what it took to see Jesus. And Zaccheus life took on new meaning once he encountered Jesus. New purpose.

  2. 34And they said, The Lord hath need of him.

35And they brought him to Jesus….

The owners of the colt did not need any further explanation once they heard that “the Lord hath need”. What does the Lord need of me and am I prepared to do whatever it is once I know?

  3. Through the story of Zacchaeus we can see that our zeal for getting close to the Lord will be rewarded. Jesus went to abide with him becasue he sought Jesus. If we seek Jesus with everythig that is in us, he will abide in us through the Holy Ghost.

  4. v48 ” For all the people were very attentive to hear him”.

As we come humbly and listen to GOD’s word with an open and hungry heart.

GOD will speak to us and show us how to be saved

” Inclline your ear, and come unto me; hear, and your
    soul shall live; Isaiah 55:3

  5. 8And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord: Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.

How amazing that a sinner would do such good works but the crowd already had him labeled. How do we look upon those who come into church to see this Jesus? Do we have them labeled?

10For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost

Lord help me to see souls that you bring into the church as you see them…valuable! Worthy for the angels to rejoice over when they repent!

  6. Vs. 41-42 “And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it. Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.”

Jesus was about to enter into Jerusalem, but before he did, he wept over it. Eternal peace and the way of peace was in their reach, but they turned it down. They rejected the opportunity God had offered them. Ps. 122:6 says, “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee.”
I’m thankful for a church that prays for the peace of Jerusalem.

I also read this passage of scripture and think how we need to weep over the city of Fort worth. (Be a prayer warrior). There are so many souls out there that don’t have the Peace of Jesus living in their lives.

  7. 45-48
    A DEN OF ROBBERS
When our churches lose their character as houses of prayer and centers of teaching about God they too are likely to be taken from us.

  8. 39 But some of the Pharisees among the crowd said, “Teacher, rebuke your followers for saying things like that!”

40 He replied, “If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers!” NLT

40And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out. KJV

***The Truth is going to be revealed whether the crowds cheer it on, or the stones do.

42 “How I wish today that you of all people would understand the way to peace. But now it is too late, and peace is hidden from your eyes
44 They will crush you into the ground, and your children with you. Your enemies will not leave a single stone in place, because you did not accept your opportunity for salvation.” NLT

*** Stones again, this time not one will be in place… Judgment will come.

Jesus, help us (me) to understand the way of peace. Don’t let peace be hidden from our eyes. Allow us be the ones to praise you, that you don’t resort to another. Allow your people (me) to accept your opportunities for salvation.

  9. 9And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.
10For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

The Son of man came into my life to seek and save that which was lost. This makes soul winning top of my list becasue I desire to be just like Him.

  10. 46Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.

Lets keep the House of God a House of Prayer.

  11. V.40 And when He was come near, he Beheld the City, and wept over it, V.42Saying if thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thou day,the things in which belong unto thy peace! But now they are hid from thine eyes. An opportunity for this city to have peace (saved) missed out. This takes me to the book of Genesis 6:6 And it Repented the LORD that He had made man on the earth, and it GRIEVED HIM at His Heart. My hope is that this City will no longer reject Christ!! But accept the Messiah!! In Jesus name!!!!!

  12. I am a sinner saved by HIs mercy. The Knowledge of what is to come brings tears to my soul! It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteous than to have known it and then turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed to them.2Peter 2:21 We all have a big resposibility!!

  13. How far would you go to glance upon HIM? I know how Zacchaeus felt for I am also very short in stature. People in the world wait in line for hours in the middle of the night just to watch an opening of a movie, or for tickets to a concert or game, but you don’t see them on line to enter a church? I can’t speak for anyone else, but I know how to get a hold of my God, I know my Lord and Savior is just a prayer away, all is needed is to humble oneself and get down on your knees and pray!!! Simple isn’t it???

  14. Luke 19:9
And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.

    This man

  15. This chapter shows persistence. We should all strive to be as Zacchaeus, he did not care who seen him and he did not let his physical body keeping him from seeing the Lord. Oh what a lessen we (I) can learn from such persistence. We (I) should never care what others may think, this world may think, etc. We need Jesus more than life, for Christ is true life. We must be as persistent as Zacchaeus and tell others of Jesus. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  16. Luke 19:9
And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.

This man was called a son of Abraham, not because he was a Hebrew but rather because of his faith. When reading Galations and Ephesians today I came across that we are children of Abraham not because of the law but by promise. This promise given to Abraham was because of his faith.

Zaccheaus demonstrated his faith in God by his willingness to repay those he had mistreated, and fix his relationship with God.

We demonstrate faith when we respond to the message and come to the altar, and a lack a lack of it by not coming to the altar.

Remember faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Also, without faith it is impossible to please Him.

Let’s be like Zaccheaus and always willing to repent.

  17. The Christ like attitude that Zaacheus had is evidence of what will happen to people that had been with the Lord. He had a repented heart, and was will to sell things that were of little use in the kingdom and give to the poor.

It’s amazing what we think and respond to when we walk with the Lord on a daily basis.

  18. Sycamore Trees can grow anywhere from 98′ to 131’… Z really wanted to see Jesus. There must have been a very large press for him to climb one of the tallest trees that grows in that reason. If you can’t see Jesus from where your at get a hold of some type of God-Created resource to help you see him. He’ll come by your way.

  19. CREATIVE PASSIONED FAITH

3 And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.

4 And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.

How many times do we just accept circumstances and situations that are out of our control as a final determination of how we think it is going to turn out.

Zacchaeus was short and could not do anything about being short. However in his creative FAITH he found something he could do. Climb a tree. A simple childhood task opened the door to the miraculous; how many times have we found ourselves begging for an answer and the answer is right before us.

Let desperation motivate us to CREATIVE PASSIONED FAITH; do whatever it takes to get into position to answer the call of GOD.

    BE Church

  20. 40And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.

If we do not praise God the rocks will cry out!

  21. In the story of Zacchaeus, God callled him down by name. Jesus saw his determination not his height.

Verse 26 in the Message Version reads…”He said, ‘That’s what I mean: Risk your life and get more than you ever dreamed of. Play it safe and end up holding the bag.”

Verse 40 reads….”But he said, “If they kept quiet, the stones would do it for them, shouting praise.” Lord help me to always keep my praise on!

  22. Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey colt that had never been ridden. That means it wasn’t saddle broken. Donkeys are notorious for being uncooperative and strong-willed. In the OT, Israel is called a wild donkey in prophecy. A wild donkey is particularly unruley and claims no master, and is perhaps entirely untouched by any sense of authority and outside control. Yet here in His triumphant entry, we see Jesus’ claim once again upon His stiffnecked, yet chosen and beloved, people. Yes they would soon crucify Him, but He planned relationship with His people such that even the “wild donkey” of Israel would come to peacefully submit to and bear her King. James 3 speaks of bridling the tongue, and so bridling the whole body, through the Holy Ghost as a parallel to the bridling of a horse (similar to bridling a donkey.) The Promise was coming to unbridled Israel, Joel did not prophesy amiss, and the first out-pouring of God’s Spirit would be upon His people in that very town of Jerusalem. Yes the Lord had need for the use of that colt… I wonder if the owners ever came to know the significance?

  23. 46Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.

It is important to remember that the Lord’s house is a house of prayer. Prayer is our communication with God. When we come into his presence in his house, we must have a set mind and heart that is pliable, so God can shape it as he will.
