Genesis Chapter 11

Genesis 11

1And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.

2And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.

3And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.

4And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

5And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.

6And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.

7Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.

8So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.

9Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

10These are the generations of Shem: Shem was an hundred years old, and begat Arphaxad two years after the flood:

11And Shem lived after he begat Arphaxad five hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.

12And Arphaxad lived five and thirty years, and begat Salah:

13And Arphaxad lived after he begat Salah four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.

14And Salah lived thirty years, and begat Eber:

15And Salah lived after he begat Eber four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.

16And Eber lived four and thirty years, and begat Peleg:

17And Eber lived after he begat Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters.

18And Peleg lived thirty years, and begat Reu:

19And Peleg lived after he begat Reu two hundred and nine years, and begat sons and daughters.

20And Reu lived two and thirty years, and begat Serug:

21And Reu lived after he begat Serug two hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters.

22And Serug lived thirty years, and begat Nahor:

23And Serug lived after he begat Nahor two hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.

24And Nahor lived nine and twenty years, and begat Terah:

25And Nahor lived after he begat Terah an hundred and nineteen years, and begat sons and daughters.

26And Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

27Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot.

28And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees.

29And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram’s wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor’s wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.

30But Sarai was barren; she had no child.

31And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.

32And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran.

  1. V.26 And Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Abram, the father of many Nations. The friend of GOD!!

  2. How quickly men began to die after the flood as compared to before. God had said in an earlier chapter that man’s days would be only 130 years.

  3. THE DEMISE OF MAKING A NAME FOR YOURSELF

4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

The attitude or human spirit behind making a name for yourself is PRIDE. Which goes before destruction. We see here the all knowing GOD already knew the man he created in his own image had the intellect and ability to build a tower to GOD; but their motivation “let us make a name” was their downfall.

Faith and Confidence are GOD given fruits; PRIDE ruins it all. Credit seekers; notoriety followers are those that GOD will confound.

I pray the spirit of humility lead us today in Jesus name.

  4. Thank you Brother Watts for your comment. I was thinking the same thing as I read this chapter.
“lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.” This tells me they knew that they werent supposed to be together, instead they were to spread out and reach the entire planet.
If I may take my thought a bit further, many times, “churches” comes together and get used to speaking the same language, and being together, that they forget the mandate of God to reach the world. Instead they want to build a city and a spiritual “tower” so that they can be saved without regard to what happens to everyone else and a spirit of Babel encompasses that “church” and its scattered and destroyed.

  5. As I read this chapter I realize the inmense wisdom of God. He knows well and far beyond our comprehension. The reason I say this is that everything seems to be connected. If there were not a tower of Babel, there would be no different tongues, & therefore no evidence of the Holy Ghost by the speaking in tongues. Bro. Joe Castillo is very correct in the fact that we can not and should not keep salvation to ourselves, is to be spread out through out the world!!!!! So start speaking to everyone everywhere, in every tongue possible. One God, One Baptism, One Faith.

  6. Terah left Ur to go to Canaan but settled in Haran instead. Why did he stop halfway? It may have been his health, the climate, or even fear. This did not change Abram’s calling. He had respect for his father’s leadership, but when Terah died Abram moved on to Canaan. God’s will may come in stages. Just as the time in Haran was a transition period for Abram, so God may give is transition periods and times of waiting to help us depend on him and trust his timing. If we patiently do his will during the transition times, we will be better prepared to serve him as we should when he calls us.

  7. 6And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.

Imagine what the children of God could do today if we as these people in Genesis. They where as one “and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.”

This chapter also shows us the lineage of Abram, Sarai, and Lot.

  8. v31-32 ” Terah took Abram his son,
And they went forth… From Ur of the Chaldees
to go into the land of Canaan

Terah had a vision of the future.
We never waste anything we do for the LORD.
No man can stop what GOD has begun.

  9. 5And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.

6And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.

We see in vs 5 that the Lord came to see what the children of “men” builded. No longer where they the children of God because they were off doing their own thing, being prompted by Nimrod, a man who had imagined to rise up and lead people against the ways of God. Yet because they all had the same “spirit” of rebellion and selfishness, they were able to build a tower to reach into the heavens.

Just imagine what we the people of God could accomplish if we all were to die out to our flesh, get in the vein of the spirit and work for the Kingdom of God!

  10. The lord commanded them to spread, go forth, and multiply, not to dwell in the plain of shinar and build a city. Sometimes what we think is best, or will bring forth good, may not be. When God says do it, we should just do it. Had they obeyed there would be no tower, and no confused languages.

  11. God recognized the power of unity and creativity among the people… It was sinful. Unity and creativity are powerful and dangerous at the same time. We must make sure that our unity and desire to accomplish great things are harnessed in the boundaries and protection of God’s will.

  12. 7Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. KLV
7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.” NIV

I wonder who God is talking to here? He is speaking to someone to “come” to him from above in heaven (possibly an angel/s) to “go down” and confuse the languages. Everything happens perfectly to Gods plan. So of course whoever he was speaking to went with him and OBEDIENCE to his command brought the will of God. He confused the language and today i can speak a few of them. In the Spirit we can speak many more …without even knowing it, or what we are saying . Praise Jesus!!

  13. 6And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.

This just goes to show that when you get enough people together working towards the same goal, things begin to happen. I wonder how many Christians will take on the mind of Christ, so that we can all have ONE mind and ONE heart.

  14. This chapter holds the key. “And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do”. We bind together with the Word behind the man of God; we too will have this promise. This is why Pastor wants us to Be-Church. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen
