Genesis Chapter 28

Genesis 28

1And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan.

2Arise, go to Padanaram, to the house of Bethuel thy mother’s father; and take thee a wife from thence of the daughers of Laban thy mother’s brother.

3And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people;

4And give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham.

5And Isaac sent away Jacob: and he went to Padanaram unto Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob’s and Esau‘s mother.

6When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padanaram, to take him a wife from thence; and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughers of Canaan;

7And that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Padanaram;

8And Esau seeing that the daughters of Canaan pleased not Isaac his father;

9Then went Esau unto Ishmael, and took unto the wives which he had Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife.

10And Jacob went out from Beersheba, and went toward Haran.

11And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.

12And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.

13And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;

14And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

15And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.

16And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not.

17And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.

18And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.

19And he called the name of that place Bethel: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first.

20And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,

21So that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then shall the LORD be my God:

22And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

  1. vs 8-9 Esau knew what displeased his father, but he did it anyway. Total lack of respect and rebellion. How often do we do the same to our heavenly father when we wilfully do what displeases him.

  2. v15 And , behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.

    Like Jacob we may feel lonely, empty, desolate, and the way may be dark.
    There is unrest every where.
    GOD does some-things we”ll never understand.
    HE is our shield of faith.. Quench all fiery darts of the enemy, and helps us when we do not understand.
    It’s wonderful to trust GOD. HE is able to take care of us.
    Thank-you Jesus for HIS personal guarantee of HIS PRESENCE, and HIS PROTECTION.

  3. I’m reminded as I read today’s chapter about the scripture in the book of Acts that says …for the promise is unto you and to your children and to as many that are afar off….

    We see Abraham given the promise of being blessed, and his seed being blessed, then we see the same promise extended unto Jacob, and now in this chapter we read Isaac being given the exact promise. This is a great example of what instilling a relationship with Jesus Christ into the lives of our children is all about. It carries from generation to generation. Isaac had such a relatioonship that after he left his father’s house, we find him building an altar to God.

  4. Birds of a feather flock together

    Essau slowly comprehends how reprehensible, his parents find his marriages to Hittie woman (Gen28:6,7). In an attempt to one-up Jacob, who journey’s to his relatives to acquire an appropriate wife, the elder brother turns to Ishmael, Isaac’s brother, to obtain acceptable wife for himself. But it was too late, by marrying the Hittite woman, Essau’s clumsy choices actually pushed him further away from his parents and from the core of his spiritual heritage.He moved out from underneath his covering.

  5. v 12-13 NIV He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. There above it stood the Lord, and he said; “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac..
    NIV commentary..Jesus, the only Mediator between God and men.
    John 1v51 (Jesus speaking) “I tell you the truth,you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
    No other way!

  6. This chapter illustrates dedication. If we can grasp the simple yet complex ways in which the Lord tries to reach us then we too will be as blessed. One of these ways was mentioned in verse 22; “and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.” If we want God’s blessings then we ought do as we are commanded to do, by the Word. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  7. 20And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,

    21So that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then shall the LORD be my God:

    22And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

  8. Knowing the LORD

    16 And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not.

    There is not a more secure, complete feeling than to wake up and realize that you have been with the LORD.

    The MSG version 16 -17 Jacob woke up from his sleep. He said, “God is in this place—truly. And I didn’t even know it!” He was terrified. He whispered in awe, “Incredible. Wonderful. Holy. This is God’s House. This is the Gate of Heaven.”

    My prayer is that we would recognize the the Gate of Heaven. To experience the pure, wonderful, incredible, holy presence of the LORD.

  9. Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan didn’t please his father. So he went and, in his attempt to make a choice pleasing to his father, ended up making a poor choice in taking the daughter of Ishmael to be his wife. A carnal mind cannot understand the will of God and, even in an attempt to follow along with it, will still likely make choices contrary to it. Accurately discerning the will of God is something that goes along with being spiritually minded, and scripture teaches we must experience a renewing of our minds and discipline our thinking through Christ, taking our very thoughts into captivity to the obedience of Christ. We can’t expect to just run off and do our own thing and somehow wind up walking in the will of God; we must surrender our choosing and decision-making (rooted largely in how we think and feel, mind and heart) to Him and lean not to our own understanding so we might receive the mind of Christ in place of our own carnal thinking. Thinking according to God’s will is a key part of walking in His will.

  10. V.12 and he dreamed, and be hold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached heaven : and behold the Angeles of God ascending and descending on it. Praise God, the Lord had spoken to me through dreams before I had even set foot in a Pentecostal church!!!!

  11. 9Then went Esau unto Ishmael,…

    I think of how so many people that I know have selled themselves short of a blessing all because they where hurt. I somewhat sad that it happens alot more than we let on.

  12. The blessings of God are all around, we just need to know how to access them. There are some blessings you can’t receive until certain steps are performed first. It’s important to know the word of God, so that we may know how to access ALL of God’s blessings.

  14. Jacob obeyed his father and did not marry a Canaanite woman. V3And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people;

    4And give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham.

    Jacob received many blessings because of his obedience and staying under the authority of Isaac.
