Genesis Chapter 39

Genesis 39

1And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither.

2And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

3And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand.

4And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.

5And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.

6And he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.

7And it came to pass after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.

8But he refused, and said unto his master’s wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand;

9There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?

10And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.

11And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within.

12And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.

13And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,

14That she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice:

15And it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and got him out.

16And she laid up his garment by her, until his lord came home.

17And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me:

18And it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled out.

19And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; that his wrath was kindled.

20And Joseph’s master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.

21But the LORD was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.

22And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it.

23The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the LORD was with him, and that which he did, the LORD made it to prosper.

  1. “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Romans 8:31-39

Here we see a beautiful display of how God is with Joseph every step of the way. (Gen 39:2-6) Making Joseph prosper. Now before that could happen, Potiphar saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did….THEN he was promoted to being in charge in the household. My prayer is that others like Potiphar can see that the Lord is with US the church body. Women of the ancient world were so worried about birthing children, that they went to great lenghts….NOW it is the turn of the Bride, to shine Jesus’ light in ourlives to birth new born christian babies. Just a thought, and a bit off subject.

God doesn’t stop there, surely he is pleased that Joseph denies the Egyptian desperate housewife because we can see that the Lord NEVER left his side (Gen 29: 21-23) “and showed his kindness” like an awesome father saying …”I know things look terrible right now, but you can’t give up..to help, I’m going to shine some light on you with favor of the warden.”
More important is that Joseph walks away with his honor, and morals intact. Joseph recognizes that their is more than just himself in a wayward wife involved in this incident. Such an act is a sin not only against the husband, Potiphar but also -and ultimately- God.

  2. Vs 2 – 3 Even in the troubles of life God will be with us if we will but seek and believe in him. God will propsper us even in hard times. We must trust and believe in him.

  3. V.3 And the master saw that the Lord was with him and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand. GOD’S favor on Joseph life, wasn’t for free. What a relationship did Joseph have with God. I’m praying for God’s favor upon POFW, but a reminder favor isn’t free…it’ll cost us something.

  4. PROSPERING IN THE TIME OF ADVERSITY

23 The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the LORD was with him, and that which he did, the LORD made it to prosper.

One of the greatest testimonies of Joseph’s life story is the fact that GOD will bless us even in and through adversity.

Joseph as a servant/slave to the captain of Pharoah was not a conducive situation in our minds for prospering; however the bible says: 3 And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand.

If GOD is with us, regardless if we are falsely accused or taken captive wrongly, GOD can still favor and prosper us if we do what is right in HIS eyes.

The PROCESS of PROMOTION has many pitfalls; but the LORD is with Joseph through them all.

    BE Church

  5. 22And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it.

The lord has placed into our hands the prisoners of this world and what ever they do, it is because we allow it. If they are lost and go to hell, it’s because we allowed it. If they come and give their fortunes to the church, it’s because we allow it. God has placed an awesome responsibility in our hands. What are we going to do with it.

  6. 21But the LORD was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.

Even when Joseph was at his lowest God still had mercy and gave him favour in the prison. Joseph didn’t allow temptation to take over and cause him to sin but instead he fled from it. Even through doing the right thing he paid a price. He was lied on by Potiphar’s wife and because she had his garment he could not defend himself. Sometimes we get ourselves in situations that we did no wrong yet still pay the price. Stay humble and allow God to work out that which we can not fix. He will always have favour with those that are true to Him.

  7. V 9 No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?
No matter what the circumstance or situaion is: all sin is against God!

  8. When the enemy inslaved Joseph ,God prospered him. So many times I can remember thinking why was I going through the thimgs that I was. I thought I was in trouble, and yet these were some of the greatest times of spiritual groweth, and blessings in my life. We have to go through the tough times in order to see what God can and will do ,in and through us.

  9. The real Joseph is not revealed until the ego is
    gone.
It was a painful and humbling lesson when GOD
changes us ( me) and not those around us or our circumstances.
Then we are free from ego, and the real lovable
part of us made in the image of GOD shines
through. ” HE must increase and I must decrease.”
The more of JESUS we have the lesser the ego.

  10. The favor of God was so evident in Joseph’s life that even those he worked for was blessed and favored of the Lord. Psalm 37:23 comes to mind
“The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.” God is no respector of persons, He will order our steps and shower us with the same favor, if we walk in His ways and delight in Him.

  11. 2 Corinthians 3:1-3 Does it sound like we’re patting ourselves on the back, insisting on our credentials, asserting our authority? Well, we’re not. Neither do we need letters of endorsement, either to you or from you. You yourselves are all the endorsement we need. Your very lives are a letter that anyone can read by just looking at you. Christ himself wrote it—not with ink, but with God’s living Spirit; not chiseled into stone, but carved into human lives—and we publish it. MSG

Anyone will be able to see Christ in you just by looking at you.

  12. Luke 16:10 “He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.”

Joseph became steward and showed himself faithful over Potiphar’s house, next would be the prison and then all of Egypt. God leads us in steps, taking us one level at a time as our faithfulness will allow. Some stops on the road to destiny won’t make sense until you’re looking at them in the rear view mirror. Have faith in the little steps along the way so you can foster faith for when you’re in the big leagues and need the most of it.

  13. Don’t Entertain The Temptation

10And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.

Joseph’s temptation spoke to him on a daily basis but he didn’t lay down with her nor did he even entertain it by being with Potiphar’s wife. Sometimes the temptation beats us because we just want to be around it… many times we fail because we entertain the idea of committing a sin! It’s not always the action that gets us it the thought and the intent of our heart that gets us in trouble!

    Clean Hands
    Clean Heart
    Clean Home

  14. This chapter illustrates deception. Although one may be doing what is correct in the sight of the Lord, the enemy may attempt to cause doubt/trouble/etc. We must simply press forward and upward for God’s will to be fulfilled. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  15. Verse 2 states that the Lord was with Joseph, what a great place to be, with God. Even though Potiphar’s wife was after Joseph, he refused to give in to her request. When God is with you and you allow him to lead, you will always make the right decision.
