Exodus Chapter 13

Exodus 13

1And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine.

3And Moses said unto the people, Remember this day, in which ye came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the LORD brought you out from this place: there shall no leavened bread be eaten.

4This day came ye out in the month Abib.

5And it shall be when the LORD shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee, a land flowing with milk and honey, that thou shalt keep this service in this month.

6Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, and in the seventh day shall be a feast to the LORD.

7Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days; and there shall no leavened bread be seen with thee, neither shall there be leaven seen with thee in all thy quarters.

8And thou shalt shew thy son in that day, saying, This is done because of that which the LORD did unto me when I came forth out of Egypt.

9And it shall be for a sign unto thee upon thine hand, and for a memorial between thine eyes, that the LORD’s law may be in thy mouth: for with a strong hand hath the LORD brought thee out of Egypt.

10Thou shalt therefore keep this ordinance in his season from year to year.

11And it shall be when the LORD shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanites, as he sware unto thee and to thy fathers, and shall give it thee,

12That thou shalt set apart unto the LORD all that openeth the matrix, and every firstling that cometh of a beast which thou hast; the males shall be the LORD’s.

13And every firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb; and if thou wilt not redeem it, then thou shalt break his neck: and all the firstborn of man among thy children shalt thou redeem.

14And it shall be when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What is this? that thou shalt say unto him, By strength of hand the LORD brought us out from Egypt, from the house of bondage:

15And it came to pass, when Pharaoh would hardly let us go, that the LORD slew all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man, and the firstborn of beast: therefore I sacrifice to the LORD all that openeth the matrix, being males; but all the firstborn of my children I redeem.

16And it shall be for a token upon thine hand, and for frontlets between thine eyes: for by strength of hand the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt.

17And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt:

18But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Red sea: and the children of Israel went up harnessed out of the land of Egypt.

19And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him: for he had straitly sworn the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you; and ye shall carry up my bones away hence with you.

20And they took their journey from Succoth, and encamped in Etham, in the edge of the wilderness.

21And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night:

22He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.

  1. V.14 And it shall be when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What is this? Thou shalt say unto him, By Strength of Hand the LORD brought us out from Egypt, from the house of bondage. Deuteronomy 6:7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk to them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thy walkest by the way, and when thy liest down, and when thou risest up. Everyday or moment that I can have with my children. I love to remind them of the goodness and mercy that the Lord has upon our lives, and I know that they can get a little tired of hearing about the goodness of Jesus, but if I as a mother doesn’t share this with them then who will? One day they will remember all I have taught them, and one day they will be teaching their children as well.

  2. Then 1st born male to be dedicated to him in remeberance of the Passover, because the Levites were to be set apart as preists of the Tribes of Israel, and it was their job to see that all of the laws God set out were followed, starting with the line of Aaron.(Num 3: 5-13). Thank God we are saved by the blood of Jesus and can be apart of the royal priesthood too.

To “seal” it all off God says that rememberance of redeeming the first born son will be “a sign on your hand, and a symbol on your forehead that the Lord brought us out of Egypt with his mighty hand” & “that the law of the Lord is to be on your lips” vs 9&16. As they cross the sea God guides them not just with Aaron and Moses, but a miraculous manifestation of God himself. As a pillar of cloud by day, and a pillar of fire by night (Num 9:15-16) to guide them, when they are to stop and camp, and when they are to move (Num 9:17-23; Dt 1:32-33; Ne 9:19)-also this “pillar” protects them. Sound familiar? Just like the same Holy Spirit that guides us today, just we don’t have to see a “pillar” as cloud or fire. But for the Isrealites it serves a “visual” reminder that God is positively present with them (Ex 33:9-10; Num 14-14).

Even greater than this cloud, Jesus is the visible fulfillment of God’s commitment to be near to us. His name is Immanuel which literaly means “God is with us” (Mt 1:23). Before he left this earth, he declared that something even better would be avaliable for us: the Holy Spirit to not only be near us, but to also live “within” us (Jn 14:15-20; 1 Cor 6:19)

  3. 21And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night:

How many of can honestly say that we would follow a cloud or a pillar of fire? Well 600,000 people did and became a mighty nation. Maybe God is seeing if you will follow him in an unnatural way. I know in my own walk this week my faith has been tried. But I do know that the God that I serve will not leave me. God is so good to us. Just think of all the blessings that He has given us. If you cant think of one than hold your breath.

  4. This chapter furthered the establishment of the first fruits belonging to the Lord. The first of our increase should be holy unto the Lord and given to him.

  5. What did it mean to “redeem every firstborn among your sons?” During the night the Israelites escaped from Egypt, God spared the oldest son of every house marked with blood on the door frames. Because God saved the lives of the firstborn, he had a rightful claim to them, but God commanded the Israelites to buy their sons back from him. This ritual served three main purposes: it was a reminder to the people of how God had spared their sons from death and freed them all from slavery; it showed God’s high respect for human life in contrast to the pagan gods who, their worshipers believed, demanded human sacrifice; it looked forward to the day when Jesus Christ would buy us back by paying the price for our sins once and for all.

  6. 17And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt:

victory means success in a contest against an enemy or opponent, or a particular contest or battle that is won

You can’t have victory without first winning a conflict or a battle. God didn’t want the people of Isreal to see war because he knew they would want to return to sin. But how can you be victorious without going to war. If you question, where is the victory in my life. Ask yourself first, have I even gone to war.

  7. The injuntion respecting the consecration of the first born as here repected with these circumstances. The firstlings of clean beasts such as lambs kids an calves if males were to be devoted to God in sacrifice. Those unclean beasts as the ass colt being unfit for sacrifice were to be redeemed. vs 12-13

  8. v18 ” But GOD led the people about, thrrough
the way of the wilderness of the Red sea:”

GOD will be our guide through the wilderness.
As we look to HIM and be led by HIS SPIRIT.
We will be refreshed as we draw near, and entertain GOD’s unquestionable presence.

  9. 19And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him: for he had straitly sworn the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you; and ye shall carry up my bones away hence with you.

  10. Verses 20-22 in the Message Version read….”They moved on from Succoth and then camped at Etham at the edge of the wilderness. God went ahead of them in a Pillar of Cloud during the day to guide them on the way, and at night in a Pillar of Fire to give them light; thus they could travel both day and night. The Pillar of Cloud by day and the Pillar of Fire by night never left the people.”

God went ahead of the people and never left them! Thank you Lord for being with me and guiding my steps.

  11. V3 is powerful. “Take remembrance of how God brought you out of Egypt, ‘the house of bondage,’ by His mighty hand; therefore be holy.” When God makes us holy unto Him in baptism, we do well to keep in our minds in our thinking what it is He has done and how we are transformed. We are different now, therefore we should live differently in the place of sanctification.

Sanctification is not a place we are meant to visit but a way of life we are meant to live. David wrote with longing about living in the house of the Lord forever; being made temples of God, we should long to forever remain pure by dwelling in the state of holiness (it doesn’t make sense to be the *temple of God* if we do not honor and worship God in us, such is the way of abandoning holiness.) It’s amazing God’s passion on the subject and how He expresses it right from square one with the Israelites’ deliverance. Our Jesus, the same yesterday, today, and forever…

  12. FOLLOW THE LORD

18 But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Red sea: and the children of Israel went up harnessed out of the land of Egypt.

GOD “Led the people about” Israel stayed together as long as they permitted GOD to LEAD them. Wilderness or sea it mattered not to GOD; or Israel and it should not matter to us!

    Follow the LORD

  13. The Lord instructed Moses so that the children of Israel would not soon forget what He had done, he said write it on the frontlet of your eyes. Too often God provides, performs a miracle, heals, delivers, sets free or just speaks to us direction in a still small voice and tomorrow we forget about it. Lord help us to keep kingdom minded things always at the forefront of our heart so that we don’t forget the benefits of the Lord.

  14. This chapter illustrates instruction. “And thou shalt shew thy son in that day, saying, This is done because of that which the LORD did unto me when I came forth out of Egypt.” We all learn and we all pass on things both knowingly and unknowingly. We all must study the Word and seek God so we can teach our families, and we all must uplift the man of God and those that teach our families God’s ways. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  15. 22He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.

God was with them 24:7, physically leading them. Today, God leads us 24:7, by the Holy Ghost.
