Exodus Chapter 20

Exodus 20

1And God spake all these words, saying,

2I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

3Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

4Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

5Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

6And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

7Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

8Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

9Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

10But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

11For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

12Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

13Thou shalt not kill.

14Thou shalt not commit adultery.

15Thou shalt not steal.

16Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

17Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

18And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.

19And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.

20And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.

21And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.

22And the LORD said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.

23Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold.

24An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.

25And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.

26Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.

  1. The Ten Commandments set the standard for our relationships with him and with others. They are the spiritual and moral centerpiece of the entire law- a law that includes religious ceremony as well as civil functions.
Are Christians obligated to follow the law today? The civil law, while containing many timeless principles for society, applies specifically to the nation of Israel. The New Testament declares cleary that Jesus fulfilled every ceremonial requirement the law set forth by his sinless life and perfect sacrifice (Mt 5:17-8; Eph 2:15-16) When our faith is in Christ, we will not be judged by the law (Ro 6:14; 8:1-4; Php 3:7-9) Still, the Ten Commandments express Gods unchanging standards for moral living, and rather than discarding them, Jesus actually drives these issues to the heart in Matthew 5:21-28. We are called not only to a personal relationship with God through Christ but also to the ethical, practical holiness that mirrors his character (1 Pet 1:14-16).

  2. The Israelites had just come from Egypt, a land of many idols and many gods. Because each god represented a different aspect of life, it was common to worship many gods in order to get the maximum number of blessings. When God told his people to worship and believe in him, that wasnt so hard for them – he was just one more god to add to the list. But when he said “You shall have no other gods before me” that was difficult for the people to accept, but if they didnt learn that the God who led them out of Egypt was the only true God, they could not be his people, no matter how faithfully they kept the other nine commandments. Thus, God made this his first commandment. Today we can allow many things to become gods to us. Money, work, or pleasure can become gods when we concentrarte too much on them for personal identity, meaning, and security. No one sets out with the intention of worshiping these things, but by the amount of time we devote to them, they can grow into gods that ultimately control our thoughts and energies. Letting God hold the central place in our lives keeps these things from turning into gods.

  3. GODS MASTER PLAN

1 And God spake all these words, saying,
2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

In his deep desire for relationship with frail humanity, GOD is revealing his intimate plan for his most prized creation. Simply put; if we will ask, seek, and place GOD first in every plan, act and decision we make we will experience ultimate relationship with GOD.

The 10 Commandments is the oldest and most noted expectation man has known from GOD. The FIRST Commandment is the most important commandment and by the words of JESUS if we accomplish the FIRST Commandment all the others will come naturally.

Jesus said in Matthew 22:37Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38This is the first and great commandment.

Remembering what GOD brought us out of is the key to loving GOD with all of our being and not allowing time, talent or treasure to come before HIM.

In seasons of BLESSiNG can we identify GOD as FIRST in our lives? GODS Blessings are not intended to take us away from our responsibilities to GOD and HIS Kingdom (Church) but assist us in fulfilling the call to HIS Kingdom.

  4. Mercy is available to them that Love Him AND KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS. If you love the world you don’t love HIM. He a jealous God!

  5. v 2 ” I Am the Lord thy GOD”
v 3 Thou shalt have no orther gods before me.

Alot of people don’t have the Savior. So they have to resort to a symbol
Why have a symbol ? When you can have the
    Savior.
In this chapter we see that GOD desires a relationship with us, and prayer is related to the heart of GOD. For some HE has been waiting to meet with them at HIS Heart. For there is no other way. We need to only speak.
    Thank – you, JESUS ….
We can go directly to HIM Heb.10:19

  6. 20And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.

I find it intresting that when as humans we ask God to show Himself to us, that He will and we dont believe it. I think of times that I have said to Him,”Well if its really you talking to me. Let …. say….” And what happens that person said…. And then we say. Oh that was just what they were about to say. What would happen if we really believed that God was speaking to us and we Listened. God will prove what He says.

  7. As simple as the 10 commandments were to the Israelites, they still pushed God to the limit to where the 10 commandments were no longer enough law to live by. Now we have the entire Bible filled wtih commandments from the Lord, and yet people still choose to do their own thing and disobey. Lord help us to get back to Your Word and life by your commandments.

  11. It’s amazing how so many times God will bare His heart to us and show us the way of right relationship with Him, yet we reject it or get so caught up in the delivery or surrounding circumstances that we miss the point. There’s so much more to God’s commandments than just telling us what to do; it’s easy to just go through the motions when we feel like that’s all God does, but if that’s all we perceive from His commandments and boundaries then we’ve missed His heartbeat and voice screaming “I love you!” when He says “no.” A child usually doesn’t fully grasp why their parent may always be saying “no, don’t do that…” but whether they understand or not, the parent’s love causes them to put in place boundaries for the child’s sake. The law is the schooolmaster to bring us to Christ; beyond doing right in our actions, right development in God says we learn to do right from the heart and allow Him to make us be right. We miss the point of boundaries (and their blessing) if we don’t allow them to bring us to God.

  12. 20And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.

What would happen if we just “ROLED WITH IT!” With what God tells us to do, say, and hear to?

  13. The Ten Commandments:

    Message Version: “Thou shalt not….
    Amplified: “You shall not….
    Message: “No….
New Living Translation: “You must not

and still people question?????? Lord help us to just stand and obey your Word.

  14. This chapter illustrates what our generation’s lack. While we are blessed to be under Grace and Mercy, we will (all) still be held accountable as individuals for what is contained in the Word of God. This is why we must repent daily, and this is why we must Be-Church before it is too late. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen
