Leviticus Chapter 12

Leviticus 12

1And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a woman have conceived seed, and born a man child: then she shall be unclean seven days; according to the days of the separation for her infirmity shall she be unclean.

3And in the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.

4And she shall then continue in the blood of her purifying three and thirty days; she shall touch no hallowed thing, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purifying be fulfilled.

5But if she bear a maid child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her separation: and she shall continue in the blood of her purifying threescore and six days.

6And when the days of her purifying are fulfilled, for a son, or for a daughter, she shall bring a lamb of the first year for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon, or a turtledove, for a sin offering, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, unto the priest:

7Who shall offer it before the LORD, and make an atonement for her; and she shall be cleansed from the issue of her blood. This is the law for her that hath born a male or a female.

8And if she be not able to bring a lamb, then she shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons; the one for the burnt offering, and the other for a sin offering: and the priest shall make an atonement for her, and she shall be clean.

  1. At first, I was hurt when I read.. “then shall she be UNCLEAN seven days; according to the days of the SEPERATION for her INFIRMITY shall she be unclean”. They can slaughter, and burn live stock, but she has to be “seperated” after giving birth?…What did she do wrong? Nothing.

So I looked into it, and when a woman gives birth to a child, it is the bleeding invloved, not the child itself, that causes her to be seen as “unclean”. Back then, they didn’t have the high tech devices, and sterile equiptment we do today. So infection, bloodborne pathogens and viruses that can spreading was a big deal. Like when Issac was weened they threw a party for him, why?, because in the first years of the childs life illnesses can claim them easier. Same goes for women in labor, like Rebecca and Rachel, they both died durring child birth. This process is quite serious and delicate, and God shows that it should be treated as such.

If a woman gives birth to a son, she remains in seclucion for one week, unclean for a total of 40 days; if she gives birth to a daughter, she is secluded for 2 weeks, unclean (and exempt from public religious observances) for a total of 80 days. Like God’s other laws, such boundaries are to the mothers benefit. You go on your own private vacation and it could be 40-80 days. The difference in duration may reflect popular cultural views on time. Possibly, the people thought that woman bled longer after bearing a daughter (which is ignorant). Anciet society certainly placed higher value on males rather than females (which isn’t fair). But God did -and does not. Throughout scripture we see evidence of God’s love for women and the tremendous worth we have to him, ladies. So we can cheer up when we read this, and not feel hurt like I did (if you did) We don’t have these issues now, but I’m sure the mother’s of today wouldn’t have minded that long vacation! lol

  2. Vs 4-5 talks of “continuing in the blood of purifying”. we must continue to live for Jesus and walk in his steps so that his blood can purify us and cover our sins.

  3. Within the last couple of chapters it is evident that God draws a line between clean and unclean. Today, that line has been drawn by the blood of Christ on Calvary. Baptism in the name of Jesus, initially, differentiates the clean from the unclean. However, we have to remain clean before the Lord. I die daily. That should be our motto. Cleanse me Lord everyday, so that I can be without spot or wrinkle. We’ve got to make it to Heaven and nothing unclean will walk the street of gold. Be Church!

  4. REALIZATION OF THE CURSE

6 And when the days of her purifying are fulfilled, for a son, or for a daughter, she shall bring a lamb of the first year for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon, or a turtledove, for a sin offering, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, unto the priest:

The choice of Eve in the garden of Eden to disobey GOD has now come to realization through the uncleanness of childbirth. The uncleanness is not in the beauty of an innocent new life taking breath, but in the choices of Eve in the garden. Consider:

    Genesis 3:16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children;

Psalms 51:5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Based on these 2 scriptures the; as a result of the fallen sinful nature of man at birth; necessitates the need of redemption through the blood of sacrifices. The sorrow of the mother was multiplied in the fact that she was unclean because the fallen nature of man had passed through her womb. This is why we MUST be BORN AGAIN of the Water and the SPIRIT.

The sacrifice is JESUS for all sin; therefore precious mothers today have an opportunity through the blood of JESUS to be clean through HIS blood.

Thankful for the BLOOD of JESUS and the Born Again experience.

  5. This chapter talks about Purify/Purification:

    1. to make pure; free from anything that debases, pollutes, adulterates, or
    contaminates: to purify metals.

    2. to free from foreign, extraneous, or objectionable elements: to purify a
    language.

    3. to free from guilt or evil.

    4. to clear or purge (usually followed by of or from ).

    5. to make clean for ceremonial or ritual use.

    6. to become pure.

The Blood of Jesus does it all!

  6. Thank GOD for Calvary .Somethings are stronger than death, and that is the precious
    flowing BLOOD Of JESUS CHRIST.
We must be born again of water and the
Spirit. Without water we will die.
” And without shedding of blood is no remission” Heb.9:22
No other BLOOD but JESUS’S BLOOD
Don’t go to Pentecost without Calvary.

  7. Unclean did not mean sinful or dirty. God created us male and female, and he ordered us to be fruitful and multiply. He made a distinction between his worship and the popular worship of fertility gods and goddesses. Canaanite religions incorporated prostitution and immoral rites as the people begged their gods to make their crops, herds, and families increase. By contrast, Israel’s religion avoided all sexual connotations. By keeping worship and sex entirely separate, God helped the Israelites avoid confusion with pagan rites. The Israelites worshiped God as their loving Creator and Provider, and they thanked him for bountiful crops, marital love, and safe childbirth.

  8. 4And she shall then continue in the blood of her purifying three and thirty days; she shall touch no hallowed thing, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purifying be fulfilled.

I found it neat that it was 33 days that the woman couldnt come into the temple. It was 33 years when Jesus started His ministry.

  9. Just like the last 2 chapters, I’ve noticed a pattern on what is clean and unclean. We must make the distinguishment between the two, but Thank you Jesus for His blood that we may be made whole and pure again.

  10. The sin offering is in the fact that we are all born in sin and need to be born again. From Genesis on Man and Woman both were placed under a curse because of disobedience. Our chidren ALL are naturally selfish and seek there own way.We must be born again in the Spirit because the carnal man is in rebellion with G-D!!

  11. Child birth required a great commitment to the Lord. Even after the child was born they had to separate themselves for up to 66 days.

This meant a faithful follower who wanted children had to be willing to go the extra mile.

I believe God wants us to count the cost in our decisions today and stay in for the long haul.

  12. Life is in the blood. The purification process could be considered a type and shadow. After repentance, we are baptized, covered by the blood of Jesus, we must separate ourselves from “unpure” things so that we are not spiritually contaminated, just like the mother’s were separted to become pure again.

  13. This chapter is on that I have thought on all day and all I can think of is how much Adam & Eve messed it all up for us! All this death, bloodshed, burning, boiling, law, separation, on and on…

It’s this… Obedience is BETTER than sacrifice.

  14. This is for the continual reminder of the curse on the woman from the garden. Until now I had never seen it as such…

  15. This chapter illustrates atonement. All were born in sin, thank God for his Blood that washes away all of our sins. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen
