Numbers Chapter 4

Numbers 4

1And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,

2Take the sum of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, after their families, by the house of their fathers,

3From thirty years old and upward even until fifty years old, all that enter into the host, to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation.

4This shall be the service of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation, about the most holy things:

5And when the camp setteth forward, Aaron shall come, and his sons, and they shall take down the covering vail, and cover the ark of testimony with it:

6And shall put thereon the covering of badgers’ skins, and shall spread over it a cloth wholly of blue, and shall put in the staves thereof.

7And upon the table of shewbread they shall spread a cloth of blue, and put thereon the dishes, and the spoons, and the bowls, and covers to cover withal: and the continual bread shall be thereon:

8And they shall spread upon them a cloth of scarlet, and cover the same with a covering of badgers’ skins, and shall put in the staves thereof.

9And they shall take a cloth of blue, and cover the candlestick of the light, and his lamps, and his tongs, and his snuffdishes, and all the oil vessels thereof, wherewith they minister unto it:

10And they shall put it and all the vessels thereof within a covering of badgers’ skins, and shall put it upon a bar.

11And upon the golden altar they shall spread a cloth of blue, and cover it with a covering of badgers’ skins, and shall put to the staves thereof:

12And they shall take all the instruments of ministry, wherewith they minister in the sanctuary, and put them in a cloth of blue, and cover them with a covering of badgers’ skins, and shall put them on a bar:

13And they shall take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth thereon:

14And they shall put upon it all the vessels thereof, wherewith they minister about it, even the censers, the fleshhooks, and the shovels, and the basons, all the vessels of the altar; and they shall spread upon it a covering of badgers’ skins, and put to the staves of it.

15And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the vessels of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation.

16And to the office of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest pertaineth the oil for the light, and the sweet incense, and the daily meat offering, and the anointing oil, and the oversight of all the tabernacle, and of all that therein is, in the sanctuary, and in the vessels thereof.

17And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron saying,

18Cut ye not off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites:

19But thus do unto them, that they may live, and not die, when they approach unto the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in, and appoint them every one to his service and to his burden:

20But they shall not go in to see when the holy things are covered, lest they die.

21And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

22Take also the sum of the sons of Gershon, throughout the houses of their fathers, by their families;

23From thirty years old and upward until fifty years old shalt thou number them; all that enter in to perform the service, to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation.

24This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, to serve, and for burdens:

25And they shall bear the curtains of the tabernacle, and the tabernacle of the congregation, his covering, and the covering of the badgers’ skins that is above upon it, and the hanging for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation,

26And the hangings of the court, and the hanging for the door of the gate of the court, which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about, and their cords, and all the instruments of their service, and all that is made for them: so shall they serve.

27At the appointment of Aaron and his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their burdens, and in all their service: and ye shall appoint unto them in charge all their burdens.

28This is the service of the families of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of the congregation: and their charge shall be under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

29As for the sons of Merari, thou shalt number them after their families, by the house of their fathers;

30From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old shalt thou number them, every one that entereth into the service, to do the work of the tabernacle of the congregation.

31And this is the charge of their burden, according to all their service in the tabernacle of the congregation; the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and sockets thereof,

32And the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords, with all their instruments, and with all their service: and by name ye shall reckon the instruments of the charge of their burden.

33This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, according to all their service, in the tabernacle of the congregation, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

34And Moses and Aaron and the chief of the congregation numbered the sons of the Kohathites after their families, and after the house of their fathers,

35From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entereth into the service, for the work in the tabernacle of the congregation:

36And those that were numbered of them by their families were two thousand seven hundred and fifty.

37These were they that were numbered of the families of the Kohathites, all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation, which Moses and Aaron did number according to the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses.

38And those that were numbered of the sons of Gershon, throughout their families, and by the house of their fathers,

39From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entereth into the service, for the work in the tabernacle of the congregation,

40Even those that were numbered of them, throughout their families, by the house of their fathers, were two thousand and six hundred and thirty.

41These are they that were numbered of the families of the sons of Gershon, of all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation, whom Moses and Aaron did number according to the commandment of the LORD.

42And those that were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, throughout their families, by the house of their fathers,

43From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entereth into the service, for the work in the tabernacle of the congregation,

44Even those that were numbered of them after their families, were three thousand and two hundred.

45These be those that were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses.

46All those that were numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron and the chief of Israel numbered, after their families, and after the house of their fathers,

47From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that came to do the service of the ministry, and the service of the burden in the tabernacle of the congregation.

48Even those that were numbered of them, were eight thousand and five hundred and fourscore,

49According to the commandment of the LORD they were numbered by the hand of Moses, every one according to his service, and according to his burden: thus were they numbered of him, as the LORD commanded Moses.

  1. 41These are they that were numbered of the families of the sons of Gershon, of all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation, whom Moses and Aaron did number according to the commandment of the LORD.

We are somewhat numbered as in families and at church, like they were thousands and thousands years ago. Just think if we randomly picked people that knew nothing about praising and worshipping God, or an infant teaching Gods word…wouldn’t it sound mumbled? How would they lead our church? Therefore God has numbered us and spoke to Pastor Watts on what activities we should be involved in. Pastor Watts listen for Gods command…there is no difference even from way back then.

  2. SERVE ACCORDING TO YOUR BURDEN

27 At the appointment of Aaron and his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their burdens, and in all their service: and ye shall appoint unto them in charge all their burdens.

The Ministry holds incredible responsibility to LORD and his people. As we read the Priests were responsible in appointing literally hundreds of people for the service of the Tabernacle.

Every detail was covered. From set up to take down, from preparation to clean up. Worship is a wonderful experience.

We also find instruction for the respect and reverence given to the instruments of the Tabernacle:

12 And they shall take all the instruments of ministry, wherewith they minister in the sanctuary, and put them in a cloth of blue, and cover them with a covering of badgers’ skins, and shall put them on a bar:

They are Holy (set apart) from all other. We learn to reverence, respect and honor the house of GOD and the instruments that are in it.

  3. Every person had their responsiblity to do. They all had a different burden, as we do today. I have a burden for music ,children ,and youth, but that might not be someone elses burden. We all have a different part in the whole body.

  4. 47From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that came to do the service of the ministry, and the service of the burden in the tabernacle of the congregation.

Every person had their onw task in which they had to preform. Or at least every man over 30 and under 50… What would happen if every person over 30 and under 50 would get involved in THE MINISTRY. Not their own ministry, but the ministry. How much better would His word get out???

  5. v7 ” and the continual bread shall be thereon:

Thank you LORD for your continual presence.
That we can come and practice HiS Presence. Just to be close to HIM.
It’s a sad day to sleep in HIS presence.
In other words… I want to be comfortable
Isaiah says… Woe to those that are at ease and carry a crossless life. As we see in this chapter that was never the plan of GOD.
What GOD has called us to do we must do quickly. GOD help me to be faithful in serving you.I thank GOD for our leadership.

  6. This is an interesting chapter, but what really stands out to me is

13And they shall take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth thereon:
Ashes were what was left after the sacrifice, after putting the old you on the alter. To many people don’t want to put aside the ashes and cover the alter in purple, or, a royal color. Ashes are for mourning, purple is royalty. Do you want to be a royal child of God, or a sorrowful Christian? It’s your choice.

  7. When I read this chapter I think of reverence and ceremony. God laid out a specific plan that dedicated his house and all the items of his house as holy. The consequence for entering into the house of God unclean was death. Thankfully he has taken on death for our uncleanliness and we can now enter into presence in our filth. However, we should forever remember the sovereign holiness of our God and reverence him accordingly.

  8. Joe 2:28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
Joe 2:29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
Joe 2:30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
Joe 2:31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.
Joe 2:32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.

      • The Holy Ghost back in the Old Testiment was only for kings, priests, and prophets. Moses and Aaron represented the priesthood. Joel prophesied that the Spirit would be poured out on all flesh, not only the priesthood.

It is also interesting that the sun turned dark before the vail ( Veil means “separated”. Communion with God was only in the Holy of Holies, behind the veil) was rent.

Luke 23:44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.

  9. God had all the people counted and once they had taken account of everyone who was there then they were assigned a responsibility. It’s not just good enough to do something. You have to do it the specific way that it was intended. Some of the people from the passage would lose there life if they didn’t follow directions. Wow, just think about it, if they couldn’t even look at something for an instant or they would die! They must have truly believed or they would have died, what about us today?

  10. It blows me away to think about how many people it took dedicated to their particular service to make the tabernacle the place that it was.A great responsiblity and sacrifice comes not only to us but our families and friends if we want to serve God the way that it was set up from the begining. If we want to grow a Church for the ministry of Jesus Christ, how many more of us will it take to commit ourselves 100% to do God’s work. It took thousands of them to be numbered and have their roles. It also speaks to me that everyone was given a role by the man of God. We have to go into the house of God with the right attitude, willing to accept our role as given to us by the man of God as he hears from God. Sometimes we dont want to do what it really neccessary to get the job done. Our only option as followers of the true word is to go get the job done. If we will accept the roles of our superiors at our work places and do what is asked of us, how much more should we do the same in the kingdom of God.

  11. True Blue… I was very curious to find out where the Israelites came up with this BLUE due for cloths. Blue is a complex color considering the time and location o where they were. Some rabbi’s agree that is came from a sea creature that is not specifically mentioned and has by been know for over 1100 years. The same blue cloth that covered different items in the tabernacle was the same blue that was commanded to be put on the tassels of priests garments. (one thread of blue)

Now it is not even worn by Jews today because they do not know the exact way or origin of the blue due that was used, I would be considered blasphemous.

Be careful as to what you add or take away from what God has spoken based on what you think.

  12. This chapter reveals the respect and reverance that was to be shown to the tabernacle and items placed within.

Lord help us to hold your sanctuary, and the things that belong to you with high respect, and pass that respect and reverence down to our children.

  13. The role of the Kohathites placed them where submission was very much a matter of life and death in their serving. If we want those deep things God has for us, we must operate in submission so God can lead us precisely in His will.

  14. This chapter illustrates servitude. One must have the proper attitude when serving the Lord. Service performed unto the Lord regardless of the task, was and should still today be accomplished methodically. We should count it a blessing to serve in any capacity. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  15. God had quite a few things that he wanted Moses to do. Before Moses could do anything, he first had to be willing to listen and then follow through. Alot of times we get so caught up with things going on around us, we forget to stop and listen to what God has to say. His words are the most important words you can hear.

  16. What a detailed job description… And a Great example of communication. There is no question left of what the responsibly of each family was to do. There was some many there to help that it didn’t fall on one person to wear 10 different hats.

  17. This chapter shows the detailed importance of obedience. Everything was to be done as God commanded and obedience was the key to life. Everyone had a specific duty to fulfill, it wasn’t left just to one person. That’s why teamwork is so important. There is no “I” in teamwork as we are teaching in our Sunday School class this quarter.
