Deuteronomy Chapter 1

30 Days of Prayer

Day 21

Pray for a revelation of the name of Jesus and who he really is to manifest to this world, and that many will be converted unto the Lord: “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)

Deuteronomy 1

1These be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this side Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red sea, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab.

2(There are eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of mount Seir unto Kadeshbarnea.)

3And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that the LORD had given him in commandment unto them;

4After he had slain Sihon the king of the Amorites, which dwelt in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, which dwelt at Astaroth in Edrei:

5On this side Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to declare this law, saying,

6The LORD our God spake unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have dwelt long enough in this mount:

7Turn you, and take your journey, and go to the mount of the Amorites, and unto all the places nigh thereunto, in the plain, in the hills, and in the vale, and in the south, and by the sea side, to the land of the Canaanites, and unto Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Euphrates.

8Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them.

9And I spake unto you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you myself alone:

10The LORD your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.

11(The LORD God of your fathers make you a thousand times so many more as ye are, and bless you, as he hath promised you!)

12How can I myself alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and your strife?

13Take you wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you.

14And ye answered me, and said, The thing which thou hast spoken is good for us to do.

15So I took the chief of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your tribes.

16And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him.

17Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God’s: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it.

18And I commanded you at that time all the things which ye should do.

19And when we departed from Horeb, we went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which ye saw by the way of the mountain of the Amorites, as the LORD our God commanded us; and we came to Kadeshbarnea.

20And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain of the Amorites, which the LORD our God doth give unto us.

21Behold, the LORD thy God hath set the land before thee: go up and possess it, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged.

22And ye came near unto me every one of you, and said, We will send men before us, and they shall search us out the land, and bring us word again by what way we must go up, and into what cities we shall come.

23And the saying pleased me well: and I took twelve men of you, one of a tribe:

24And they turned and went up into the mountain, and came unto the valley of Eshcol, and searched it out.

25And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down unto us, and brought us word again, and said, It is a good land which the LORD our God doth give us.

26Notwithstanding ye would not go up, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God:

27And ye murmured in your tents, and said, Because the LORD hated us, he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.

28Whither shall we go up? our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying, The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there.

29Then I said unto you, Dread not, neither be afraid of them.

30The LORD your God which goeth before you, he shall fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes;

31And in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that the LORD thy God bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came into this place.

32Yet in this thing ye did not believe the LORD your God,

33Who went in the way before you, to search you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to shew you by what way ye should go, and in a cloud by day.

34And the LORD heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and sware, saying,

35Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers.

36Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him will I give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath wholly followed the LORD.

37Also the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, saying, Thou also shalt not go in thither.

38But Joshua the son of Nun, which standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: encourage him: for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.

39Moreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.

40But as for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.

41Then ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against the LORD, we will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us. And when ye had girded on every man his weapons of war, ye were ready to go up into the hill.

42And the LORD said unto me, Say unto them. Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies.

43So I spake unto you; and ye would not hear, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD, and went presumptuously up into the hill.

44And the Amorites, which dwelt in that mountain, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and destroyed you in Seir, even unto Hormah.

45And ye returned and wept before the LORD; but the LORD would not hearken to your voice, nor give ear unto you.

46So ye abode in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode there.

  1. This is a clear exampke of the diffrence betweem people of faith and those without it. Those that had faith were able to posses the land. Those without it fought a war that God did not command them to and were defeated.

  2. Doubt and unbelief causes the Spirit of GOD to lift from the worship service, as in verse 42
“For I Am not among you” and will rob us from our blessings, healings, miracles, and responding to what GOD would have us do.
Like our promises that GOD has already given us. V35″Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that good land,”
    Their unbelief even robbed Moses
v37 ” Thou also shalt not go in thither.”
As we can see there is not much mercy shown to those who have a spirit of rebellion or unbelief … v 45″And ye returned and wept before the Lord, but the Lord would not hearken to your voice, nor give ear unto you.

It is written My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves. Matt.21:13

Believe from your heart and doubt not. GOD will do anything in His will right in the midst of us.As HE did for the children of Israel

  3. v31 And in the wilderness how thou hast seen how the Lord Thy God bare thee as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came into this place.
The Message Version uses the word (carry) in place of bear.
How can we so easily distrust God when we can look back and see how He has been so faithful!!!
Thank you God, for carrying me when I couldn’t walk.

  4. 21Behold, the LORD thy God hath set the land before thee: go up and possess it, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged.

For being afraid and discouraged, the Isrealites lost touch with the Lord. If you feel discouraged, you’ll lose faith in God. Lets keep our faith to be encouraged at all times. Fear not, the Lord is with you at all times.

  5. SECRET MURMURS

26 Notwithstanding ye would not go up, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God:
27 And ye murmured in your tents, and said, Because the LORD hated us, he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.

It amazes me how many people think that because they are in their own home (tent) that they have the “right” to say whatever they desire about whoever they desire. Without considering that GOD hears EVERYTHING! He owns the wind and creates the sound, surely he knows everything that is reverberated through HIS domain of space.

The murmuring was the result of a failure to understand GOD. To ignorantly consider that GOD desired to destroy them was most offending to GOD and his HOLY nature. Be careful little mouth what you say!

The truth is that the spirit of rebellion caused them to murmur instead of trust and obey. Pride destroys – Humility elevates.

  6. The walls of Jericho were within reach. The river of Jordan would soon part. The inhabitants of the land had been shaking in their boots at the mention of God’s people.

Yet doubt and fear caused hate to rise up against the Lord. They turned on God, and said that he hated them!

They looked at their promise in their hands and through it down ready to retreat back to Egypt.

When the shepherd spoke with them, they realized what they did, and rushed to retrieve their fleeing promise. Only to find that God had shifted the time tables 40 years, and the Amorites who would have been defeated defeated them.

There is a book called “the ten second rule” by Clare DeGraffe which talks about when God tells you to do something, if you dont do it in ten seconds you will talk yourself out of it.

Had Israel obeyed immediately and took the land, not even debating it’s condition or inhabitants then Moses, Aaron, Miriam and the multitudes over 20 would walk into their promised land.

  7. 21Behold, the LORD thy God hath set the land before thee: go up and possess it, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged.

    BE BRAVE!

  8. Vs 6 God told Moses they had been in this place long enough and they should move. One day God will tell us the same thing and we as a church should be ready spiritually to take the land (Fort Worth) that God has promised.

  9. This chapter is a play by play of the Israelites unbelief and disobedience. In the end, “the LORD would not listen to your prayers” is what happened as a result of this, as it states in verse 45 (CEV). We need to be obedient and trust (have faith) in the Lord even when we don’t fully understand. GOD HEARS MY CRY…..was our Bible Point last week in our Sunday School class. God is so good!

  10. 24And they turned and went up into the mountain, and came unto the valley of Eshcol, and searched it out.

25And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down unto us, and brought us word again, and said, It is a good land which the LORD our God doth give us.

They had a good report, but yet chose to rebell against it because some were of an evil report. Lord help me to keep positive and take you at your word so that I don’t wander around my promises until I die off without seeing the fulfillment.

  11. Heavenly Father, keep me on a straight path, keep me from thinking negative things, keep me from gossiping, murmuring, speaking out of terms, and feed me of Your steak (BIBLE). I want to have the Childs faith all over again, keep me in line with your Word.
Thank you Jesus for delivering me of my past life.

  12. Just as wanderers in a desert can be deceived by mirages, so can a desert of circumstance lead to a mindset open to deceitful mirages. While it may not be a vision of an oasis when really it’s only more wilderness ahead, it could be a vision of defeat and insurmountable challenges marring the landscape of our dreams.

What is our heart filled with? Doubt and fear? Faith and hope? As a man thinks in his heart… The vision of our heart can have such a tremendous impact on our tomorrow and how we live our today. I heard a wise saying “Look where you’re going, because you’ll go where you’re looking.”

  13. You might not be murmuring to others but even murmuring in your own tent is the kind the kind of thing that will keep you in kadeshbarnea for 38 years out of 40. The majority of your hardship is probably the same old test…. PASS IT!

  14. 15So I took the chief of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your tribes.

When the man of God sets up leadership, he look at many things, and gives specific instruction. Hopefully as we grow, we’ll grow to in wisdom and understanding, knpowing what and how we should be instructing, as well as our expected roles in the church, that we might be more useful and less of an obsticle for our leaders.

  15. This chapter illustrates honor. Moses knew he would not be able to go into the Promised Land because of his actions; however he still served the Lord. We will also be accountable for our actions, which we can face them with honor like Moses, and repent and serve the Lord or we can quit. This is why the Word teaches and Pastor preaches we must repent daily, for there is hope as long as we have breath. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  16. This is Moses speaking to the children of Israel, letting them know that the Lord has prepared a place for them, which he had promised to their fathers Abraham, Issac and Jacob. after the Isrealites found out that the land was good, they still murmured and complained , so much that it made God angry and he made a vow that none of this evil generation would see the land that he promised to their fathers. God did let Joshua , and the kids that didn’t know good or bad and the infants who they thought would die on the way. Everyone else including Moses had to head back to the desert by the way of the red sea. Now that God was mad they wanted to go and possess the land, but God said I wouldn’t do that if I were you cause I am not going to be there with you and you will get a beat down from your enemies. They went anyway and got ran out of town. When the children of Israel came crying to the Lord , He did not hear them. Therefor they remained at Kadesh for a long time.

  17. GOD became angry with the people who did not listen to what he told them. When they murmered in their tents HE heard them and knew their intent. HE did not accept their half hearted “sorries” and told them not to go as they were first commanded because HE was no longer with them.
