Deuteronomy Chapter 8

30 Days of Prayer

Day 28

Pray for the ministry and all church leadership, and for a complete liberty of the operation of the five-fold ministry in the body of Christ. Pray for the fruit of the Spirit, the gifts of the Spirit, and God‘s divine ability to manifest in His ministers, as He desires: “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:11)

Deuteronomy 8

1All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers.

2And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.

3And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.

4Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years.

5Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so the LORD thy God chasteneth thee.

6Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.

7For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills;

8A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey;

9A land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass.

10When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the LORD thy God for the good land which he hath given thee.

11Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:

12Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein;

13And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied;

14Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;

15Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness, wherein were fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint;

16Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;

17And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.

18But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

19And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the LORD thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish.

20As the nations which the LORD destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the LORD your God.

  1. v 7 NIV For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land….

    We see once again that those who obeyed God are going to possess the good land. We also, who “endure to the end” will possess the good land….Heaven.

  2. vs. 11-Beware that thou forget not the Lord thy God,in not keeping his commandments,and his judgments,and his statutes,which I command thee this day:
    vs.19-And it shall be,if thou do at all forget the Lord thy God,and walk after other gods,and serve them, and worship them,I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish.
    vs.20-As the nations which the Lord destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the Lord your God.

    We all need to be obedient. the Lord wants us to obey him so we can go to Heaven!

  3. Do not forget the Lord (the one who humbled, disciplined, and feed them)vs3-5. IF they follow their God faithfully while living there, they will be happy and fulfilled. They will lack nothing. These people certainly were not any less human than we are. Sometimes the daily details of life- sickness, bills and mouting piles of laundry- distract, discourage and trick us into believing that life is overwhelming or not very meaningful. Where are we headed? Can you picture it? Hope in the future is a very important meditation while we live in the meantime.

  4. in his ways, and to fear him.

    7For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills;

    8A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey;

  5. when we learn to be odedient to the Pastor and leadership and God we will find that our life is not near the trouble as if we didn’t obey.

  6. Vs. 2, “And thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.”

    Sometimes, the tests we go through in life are to humble us before God, and sometimes, we go through them, so that, God can see what we are really made of. Are we going to stand and follow him or are we going to fall and give up?

  7. v18 But thou shalt remember the LORD thy GOD: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto the fathers, as it is this day

    GOD’S people have always had something to show them the way.
    We must never forget His passion , sacrificed His life for us on Calvary.
    As, long as we tell His gospel we will never lose our identity .
    Be reminded… HE IS ALIVE FOREVER MORE!

  8. GODS FAITHFULNESS OUTSHINES MANS FAITHFULNESS

    4 Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years.

    We witness Colossians 1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. The very fiber of their clothes did not even get old on this 40 year march. Their feet did not swell from walking every day.

    After this and so much more we find the LORD reminding them that HE did it all and they should not forget it.

    11 Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:

    How many times are we guilty of letting up on commitment and faithfulness to GOD when we have no desperate, driving need in our lives?

    iPray we seek to match his FAITHFULNESS!

    GOD is Faithful.

  9. This chapter illustrates a warning. “And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth”. We (I) must never ever forget; it is God that gives us the ability to do anything, and it is God that blesses with; the Holy Ghost, health, sound minds and goods. “But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth”. We can never repay the Lord; we can and should however praise and worship him always, for he could have easily chosen another. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  10. 17And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.

    18But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

    AWESOME SCRIPTURE

  11. and when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied, then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, (Deuteronomy 8:13, 14 ESV)

    What a shame it would be to be delivered from Egypt, and when you get to the land God promised you, you recreate Egypt.

    God warns of removing the idols, and not following the culture of Egypt. If they forget it was God who brought them out they will go back to Egypt, yet living in the promised land.

  12. To humble thee and to prove thee… Keep his commandments, or no.

    There’s always a reason for your test… Hopefully it’s not a forty year test. Obedience is like having an answer sheet to it. Just apply what’s on the answer sheet (obedience) and you’ll never fail.

  13. 17And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.

    I can see how it’s easy to let power go to our heads as if it was our will that gets us power and might non the less become proud because of it. Power can indeed change people. This chapter teaches me how God is my provider, the blessings that are received are his will he gives us the power to become successful. Praising him and thanking him for each and every blessing and for providing me and my family all that he wills me to have. Lord pour your blessings, miracles that you have for me, Lead me and guide me to do your will always to please you and never forget all you do for me.

  14. The season of scarceness is a season of preparation. Don’t let the scarceness blind you to the promise of God, and don’t let the fulfilled promise of God distract you you from Him. We can’t let current circumstances blur and distort our vision of what’s ahead. Relying on what we see in front of us may paint a picture of tomorrow that is very different from the masterpiece God is actually creating. There is a reason for the season; God’s guidance will bring us through each step and prepare us for tomorrow just perfectly if we surrender it all to Him.

  15. This chapter spoke to me about reflecting back on what the Lord has brought us through. Yes, there were trials; but, yes there were victories! Sometimes, we go through these things to see if we will come through them with praise! If we remember that God, our God, the one who chose YOU, is on our side; then, victory is a given.

    Verse 6 in the NLT reads….”“So obey the commands of the LORD your God by walking in his ways and fearing him.”

  16. With all the blessings that the children of Israel were about to receive, they were probably a little surprised by such a warning of perishing. When we are going through our trouble or trials we rely heavily on God and we pray more than ever, then as the day breaks, the storm ceases, and our blessings come we give glory to God for bringing us through, teaching us, and blessing us. When this happens our devotion to God seems to be at its peak and the very thought of turning away from God is appalling. After all He has done for us? Never! But spiritual warnings do not come for no reason, whether from the pulpit or a brother or sister in the Lord. How quickly we will see the Israelites turn and forget what the Lord brought them from. I do not ever wish to be so comfortable in my blessings I forget where they came from and what I had to go through to get where I am. I pray God keep us from that life of complacency. I do not want to be a live for Jesus when everything is going wrong christian. I want to be faithful and give honor and credit where it is due. Thank you Jesus!

  17. 11Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:

    Lord I never want to forget the many blessings that you have so bountifully blessedd me with…

  18. 7For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills;

    11Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:

    12Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein;

    13And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied;

    14Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;

    Lord, help me to not let your abundant blessings blind me to the fact that I need you. I don’t ever want to forget that all of those things are only in my life because YOU placed them there, and NONE of it was done by MY power.

  19. Let us not forget where we came from. Where the Lord brought us out of and what the Lord has given us. He is awesome and is worthy of our obedience. We should harken unto his correction
