Joshua Chapter 1

Joshua 1

1Now after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister, saying,

2Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.

3Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses.

4From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.

5There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

6Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.

7Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper withersoever thou goest.

8This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

9Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

10Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying,

11Pass through the host, and command the people, saying, Prepare you victuals; for within three days ye shall pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the LORD your God giveth you to possess it.

12And to the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to half the tribe of Manasseh, spake Joshua, saying,

13Remember the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, saying, The LORD your God hath given you rest, and hath given you this land.

14Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle, shall remain in the land which Moses gave you on this side Jordan; but ye shall pass before your brethren armed, all the mighty men of valour, and help them;

15Until the LORD have given your brethren rest, as he hath given you, and they also have possessed the land which the LORD your God giveth them: then ye shall return unto the land of your possession, and enjoy it, which Moses the LORD’s servant gave you on this side Jordan toward the sunrising.

16And they answered Joshua, saying, All that thou commandest us we will do, and whithersoever thou sendest us, we will go.

17According as we hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we hearken unto thee: only the LORD thy God be with thee, as he was with Moses.

18Whosoever he be that doth rebel against thy commandment, and will not hearken unto thy words in all that thou commandest him, he shall be put to death: only be strong and of a good courage.

  1. V.8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth: but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written thereinfor then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Obedience will always take you further in God’s Kingdom, Success in His Kingdom is always in my thoughts, in Proverbs it says to buy the TRUTH and sell it not; also wisdom, instruction, and understanding.

    ***New Testament Scripture Comparison***

1John4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.19 We love him, because he first loved us

1 John 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

    ***Conclusion***

Joshua was trying to get Israel to understand and to have a true relationship with God.

There is a way to “gauge” our relationship with the Lord…

    *IF WE ARE ALWAYS FEARFUL
*IF WE ARE FULL OF ANXIETY
    *IF WE ARE ALWAYS WORRYING

These things are a gauge that warns us our “love level” is low and therefore we need a refreshing love relationship evidenced with our obedience to HIS commandments.

    PERFECT LOVE CASTS OUT FEAR

  3. Even in this we see that God said he would be with them but to neither go left nor right but to stay on the straight. So even though God is going with him there is still away he must go. Just like in our walk with God today he will be with us but we still need to stay on the straight path neither stray to the left or to the right.

  4. Cowboy Up!

I counted 3-4 times the Lord said for Joshua to be strong and courageous. Now, he would only of done that if he was going to saddle him up on the mean bull…but hey, your going to be victorious and I’m there with you. So cowboy up Joshua, you’ve been waiting in line behind Moses now here it is, and I will be with you wherever you go. Awesome. To keep you strapped in the saddle, your gonna have to hold onto the reigns (the Word, or Law) be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

“If you are faithful to God, you will get rich.” Is that the message God is giving to Joshua, the people of Israel and believers through all history? The answer is yes and no. Prosperity and success come in many forms. Our Savior did not have a place to lay his head (Mt 8:20). The Lord of glory was worn in a stable and worked as a common carpenter. He never made the top ten list for the wealthiest in his day. Yet Jesus was both prosperous and successful. The apostle Paul traded position and power in the religious establishment of his day for beatings, sleepless nights and the utter joy of planting churches. Successful? Prosperous? Absolutely. Not carnally. God’s promise to his people is if they follow him (cowboy up) and walk in faithfulness, he will bless them. This blessing can take many shapes. Sometimes it will be monetary provision. Many Biblical characters experience this. Yet it is a bigger picture than just just dollars and cents. Mat 6:19“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. 20Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. 21Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.

  5. 7Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper withersoever thou goest.

8This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

The word of God is a light unto our path, showing our feet which way to go, turn not from it to right hand or to the left. Meditate therein day and night, and then do according to all that is written, then your way will be prosperous and then you will have success. A blue print for success, follow the word of God!

  6. THE WORD OF THE LORD

3 Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses.

The theme of this Chapter is fulfillment. As GOD promised through Moses Leadership, now shall be fulfilled through Joshua’s Leadership.

Verse 3 is a Word of Promise to The Pentecostals of Fort Worth. Bro. David Smith prophesied this WORD to POFW way back in 2004 and we have been walking the streets of our city, claiming this prophecy since long before that day. We must keep busy, moving about the city, declaring and proclaiming the WORD of GOD.

  7. THE KEY TO VICTORY

8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

GOD gave Joshua the Key to Victorious Living and this WORD of PROMISE is VALID (good) Today.

Exercise your KEY to VICTORY and speak the WORD of GOD, OBEY the WORD of GOD, LIVE the WORD of GOD.

    Prosper and have Success.

  8. MSG – vs 2 I’m giving to the People of Israel. I’m giving you every square inch of the land you set your foot on—just as I promised Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon east to the Great River, the Euphrates River—all the Hittite country—and then west to the Great Sea. It’s all yours. All your life, no one will be able to hold out against you. In the same way I was with Moses, I’ll be with you. I won’t give up on you; I won’t leave you. Strength! Courage! You are going to lead this people to inherit the land that I promised to give their ancestors. Give it everything you have, heart and soul. Make sure you carry out The Revelation that Moses commanded you, every bit of it. Don’t get off track, either left or right, so as to make sure you get to where you’re going. And don’t for a minute let this Book of The Revelation be out of mind. Ponder and meditate on it day and night, making sure you practice everything written in it. Then you’ll get where you’re going; then you’ll succeed. Haven’t I commanded you? Strength! Courage! Don’t be timid; don’t get discouraged. God, your God, is with you every step you take.”

The promise of God reiterated to Joshua – God will give you every place your feet touch. He will always be with, He won’t give up, He won’t leave. They were instruction to give it all they had, don’t get off track, this was to ensure that they would complete the journey they started with success.

Likewise God has spoken this same prophecy to POFW through Bro. David Smith when we first started as a Church. His word encourages us today to give it all we got. Now is not the time to give up, slack up, turn around or get off track. The promise is to us that everywhere the soles of our feet touch, God will give us. There are hurting, hunger people in Fort Worth, and we must be prepared everyday spiritually, practicing what is written in the Word that we have read, pondered and meditating upon so that we can have words that are apples of gold in pictures of silver to minister to the people God places in our path, everywhere we go. Wake up – there are divine appointments today inour lives with peole that God wants us to be Jesus to.

  9. Verses 7-8 in the NLT read….”Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do. Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do. ” Just as God spoke to Joshua telling him that he would never give up on him, we too must take courage and not get discouraged. Many things can come between us and God, if we let it! The key to not letting that happen would be to study, meditate on his Word continually, and obeying it.

  10. Vs 1-9 spoke volumes to me.

Back in 1999 during a revival crusade downtown Fort Worth is when I first learned that a harvest prophecy had been spoken over our city. And its still hasn’t come to pass yet. Gods word will not return void.

Isaiah 55:11 So will the words that come out of my mouth not come back empty-handed. They’ll do the work I sent them to do, they’ll complete the assignment I gave them. MSG

Through our strong and courageous leader Pastor Watts we are on hot pursuit of obtaining that prophecy spoken to our spiritual ancestors. I’m thankful for Pastor Watts leadership. He is not timid and he is careful to obey all the instructions in the Word. And does not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left.

POFW we are BLESSED! Pack your bags. We are moving into our promise land (new church).

Vs 10-11 Then Joshua gave orders to the people’s leaders: “Go through the camp and give this order to the people: ‘Pack your bags. In three days you will cross this Jordan River to enter and take the land GOD,your God, is giving you to possess.'” MSG

  11. 1 -9 After the death of Moses the servant of God, God spoke to Joshua, Moses’ assistant:

“Moses my servant is dead. Get going. Cross this Jordan River, you and all the people. Cross to the country I’m giving to the People of Israel. God, your God, is with you every step you take.” Msg

POFW lets go win fort worth

  12. I thaank the Lord when He tells us to go somewhere or do something for His Kingdom. It brings us to a sacred and a”light “to our life.

  13. 4From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.
5.There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee
6.Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.

Joshua1:1 Now after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister, saying, 2Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan,

    ***Interesting Point***

The Children of Israel kept themselves out of the Promise Land when Moses sent the spies. They gave a bad report. They also kept Moses out.

The interesting point is… that as long as Moses was alive, HE KEPT THEM OUT. (For as soon as he was taken out of the way, the Word came to Joshua),”2Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan”

    ***New Testiment Comparison***

*Joseph the husband of Mary, if he would have been alive during Jesus Ministry, may have hindered His ministry.Jesus understood authority…but because he died, the eldest son took authority over the family of that time.

  15. 2.-“Moses my servant is dead.now therefore ,arise,go over this Jordan ,you and all these people,to the land which I am giving to them-the children of Israel.
—–{arise} arise Alejandra ! Go over this Jordan (it’s a journey) how long does it take to cross it? It depends, for them:three days, for you? For me?it hasn’t. Been easy, there have been rocks, many some little some small but, I am not alone,I have never been alone, I must cross this Jordan and the good thing, I am not about to cross it by myself,” I Am TAKING MY FAMILY WITH ME” just like God told Joshua….
    ARISE! (trust,persistent ,discipline,obidience….)

7.- “only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses my servant commanded you:do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left that you may prosper wherever you go.
What is on the other side of the Jordan belong to me and my family!!!!! Thank you GOd for mercy!!!!!

  16. Vs. 8, ” This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”

We need to know what is written in God’s Word. We need to read it day and night. When we keep his commandments that are found in His Word, then we shall prosper and be successful.

  17. 13Remember the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, saying, The LORD your God hath given you rest, and hath given you this land.

I am reminded of the promises to our own church. God will give us the rest and He will give us this land that He promised. Be of good courage, fear not, God is with us.

  18. 3 Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses.

4 From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.

5 There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

6 Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.

I keep this scripture in my heart and in my mind as I walk the region of Parker & Tarrant County. I claime it in the Precious Name of Jesus Christ. I invision people walking in from the streets looking for the Truth, a Truth that is not for sale, that is not an entertainment, but raw, straight and to the point for the day approaches and the harvest is ready. Get up all workers go & compel them to come.

  19. 7Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper withersoever thou

8This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

What a chapter filled with blessings and promises of God! These scriptures show that to prosper was totally up to the person-God had already given His promises and tells them IF they observe to do according to all that is written, then THEY would make THEIR way prosperous.
Lord, help me to meditate YOUR law and observe to do it as it is written so that I may prosper!

  20. 1Now after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister, saying,
2Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.

    God’s Promise + Obedience to God’s word = Success !!

  21. vs.5- There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life:as I was with Moses, so will i be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

We have to believe God is with us! He will NOT fail us! He is with us wherever we go!

vs.6- Be strong and of good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware untontheir fathers to give them.

God is going to let us inherit what belongs to us (a new church)!

  22. BE STRONG AND OF GOOD COURAGE IS THE OBVIOUS THEME. Brother Morgan brought back alot of courageous moments for me when I got in a little trouble when I was young. I would pace my cell praying out loud and it echoed down the hall. I was not ashamed to kneel next to my bunk as inmates passed by. Once I met someone that I knew in the streets I exclaimed “praise God” as I shook his hand. He was the same age as me took the wrong path and has been dead for 20years. God miraculously protected me and my testimony in Chino State Prison. But once again I wonder”Where is my boldness and my trust? Where is my strength and courage? Lord I don’t want to look back but revive my Spirit like in the beginning!

  23. this is a very encouarging chapter. God told Joshua that all the land that was promised to Moses was also promised to them but they had to obey the laws. that same promise is also for us. i also feel that this passage was saying that we should not foreget our brothers that are still lost that we should reach back for them and tell them the goodness of God and i now know that if they rebel that it is nothing that i can do but continue to pray and ask God to have mercy on thier soul

    ***Reflection***

I would like to thank my pastor for lighting a blog firestorm within me…

    ***Scripture Text***

8This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night.

    ***Application***

Blogging 3 times a day keeps the Word in my heart!

    ***Thanks Pastor***

  25. Wherever God’s children walk, we are blessed. All we have to do is claim it and let God do the rest. Our faith will take us to the next level and then some.

  26. v13. ” Remember the word”

GOD needs hearing ears and open hearts to do HIS WILL . We will find rest in doing GOD’S Will. GOD is faithful and i thank HIM for the land HE has promised us.
If we do our part GOD will do HIS . Be strong and of good courage, be not afraid ,neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy GOD is with thee whithersorver thou goest.
What a wonderful promise HIS unfailing presence.
    GOD IS FAITHFUL!

  27. Tread, don’t walk…

Walking is just walking but when you tread it means to trample or subdue; to repress. The Lior is on our side and every where that we go if we walk in holy ghost authority we will subdue the land.

  28. 1 After the death of Moses the servant of God, God spoke to Joshua, Moses’ assistant. MSG. This is the baton being passed to Joshua. God is reminding Joshua of the rules, God is reassuring Joshua the he is with them . Just go STRAIGHT to victory. Lets go POFW.

  29. 1 After the death of Moses the servant of God, God spoke to Joshua, Moses’ assistant. MSG. This is the baton being passed to Joshua. God is reminding Joshua of the rules, God is reassuring Joshua the he is with them . Just go STRAIGHT to victory. Lets go POFW.

  30. 16And they answered Joshua, saying, All that thou commandest us we will do, and whithersoever thou sendest us, we will go.

We have to mix faith with action. Joshua and God would have had to go to Jordan by themselves if the Israelites had just said, ok cool, let’s wait on the Lord to give us our blessing…they had to take action and go get their blessing. Not to say that the Lord CAN’T drop things in our lap, but it doesn’t mean he WILL. It requires that step of faith on our part to go through to see the fulfillment of that promise.

  31. 5There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.
6Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.

We need not fear, as we go forth, for God has already promised this city to us. We must go and reach for the lost..

  32. 7Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper withersoever thou goest.

We often seem to be condemed by the law, but GOD is telling us that if we follow the law we will prosper. Everyone wants to prosper at what they do, so we should all start looking at the law a little closer. It says not to turn from it to the right or left. In our world things often swing like a pendulum, politics, education, work, war, ect. This is reminding us to stay on that straight and narrow path that has been layed out for us and to stay away from the swaying of the world to the right and left. Sometimes people wonder why some prosper while others do not. Look to see who has swayed.

8This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success

We should always meditate on the Word of GOD. It should be in our mouth and on our hearts all the time, not just when we are at church.

  33. This chapter illustrates fulfillment. “Now after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister, saying, Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.” God will always fulfill his promise. May the good Lord bless you all in Jesus name, Amen
