Joshua Chapter 4

Joshua 4

1And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over Jordan, that the LORD spake unto Joshua, saying,

2Take you twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe a man,

3And command ye them, saying, Take you hence out of the midst of Jordan, out of the place where the priests’ feet stood firm, twelve stones, and ye shall carry them over with you, and leave them in the lodging place, where ye shall lodge this night.

4Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man:

5And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of Jordan, and take you up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel:

6That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones?

7Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.

8And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the LORD spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto the place where they lodged, and laid them down there.

9And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests which bare the ark of the covenant stood: and they are there unto this day.

10For the priests which bare the ark stood in the midst of Jordan, until everything was finished that the LORD commanded Joshua to speak unto the people, according to all that Moses commanded Joshua: and the people hasted and passed over.

11And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over, that the ark of the LORD passed over, and the priests, in the presence of the people.

12And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh, passed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses spake unto them:

13About forty thousand prepared for war passed over before the LORD unto battle, to the plains of Jericho.

14On that day the LORD magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they feared Moses, all the days of his life.

15And the LORD spake unto Joshua, saying,

16Command the priests that bear the ark of the testimony, that they come up out of Jordan.

17Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, Come ye up out of Jordan.

18And it came to pass, when the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD were come up out of the midst of Jordan, and the soles of the priests’ feet were lifted up unto the dry land, that the waters of Jordan returned unto their place, and flowed over all his banks, as they did before.

19And the people came up out of Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, in the east border of Jericho.

20And those twelve stones, which they took out of Jordan, did Joshua pitch in Gilgal.

21And he spake unto the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones?

22Then ye shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land.

23For the LORD your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were gone over:

24That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the LORD your God for ever.

  1. Memorial B.C. (before camcorders, or cameras)
    Jos 4:6-7, 20-24

When God does a mighty work, the Israelites leave a memorial in the very place where God acted on their behalf. Often they set up a pile of stones as a reminder. The Israelites cross the Jordan on dry land in the middle of the flood season, a great miracle of God. They entered the land withouth so much as a wet sandal! and then God says “Don’t ever forget this moment! set up 12 stones in the middle of the Jordan as a perpetual reminder of this day.” kind of like “Get the camera snapping or rolling cause this is a memory of a miracle.” So that every time a family passes that spot, they tell that story again. like a kid asking grandpa “Tell us again what God did when we entered this land.” “Mom, tell the story one more time” Its all for God’s glory.

What a powerful example for us today. We can become a generation that builds and establishes memorials that point us and our children back to those moments when God moved in powerful ways in our lives and others. We need to tell the stories again and again so that we never forget God’s deeds on our behalf. The Bible recaptures many of these moments then, and prepares us for now. God has done amazing things, and still is today. Today we don’t exactly set up stones along the way of how God is moving miraculously in our lives, we now can use footage of sermons, missions, baptisms etc.

    “Telling Your Kids Your Testimony”

    ***Scripture Text***

6That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones?

*(Awesome message from the man of God last night!)*

    ***New Testament Scripture Comparison***

(Rev 12:11) And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

The Lord wanted to set up a memorial for the future generations. A memorial is a testimony…

Proverbs 22:28 Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.

***Always remember where you came from…Remember your testimony…I will always remember mine. When God lays it on my heart to speak of prison…I will.***

(note: instead of setting up rocks in a field like the Hebrews did, we would sometimes go out in the fields with sledgehammers and bust up rocks…ha-ha but you know what I mean).

  3. I thank God for the older men and women that set stones up to show us what God did for them and brought them from. I as a child of God should go father in God then the older ones because they passed down the knowleadge the blesses of God. So I must ask my self when I see the stones / land marks do I rejoice or just say that was cool and go on? I should take Thoses stones and build my life on them and build the corner of my house to the land marks that are set.

  4. “Spiritual Landmarks”

My brother and I once found an old picture of our grandparents, B.C. ( before Christ). I remembered how shocked we were, to see my grandmother in pants and my grandfather smoking a cigarette. They came to know the Lord long before we were born; so we never knew them any other way. I have a rich spiritual heiritage. I can look back and remember that it was grandmother who taught me how to pray. It was my grandmother that helped instill holiness into my heart. It’s important that we create or even become a spiritual landmark for the next generation. I want my son to have the testimony that he had a praying mother. I want him to be able to look back in his life and see his rich spiritual heritage continued….from great grandparents, to grandparent, to parents, to him and further. A heiritage of blessing.

  5. We should begin to set up a “praise” memorial before God and others, even before our miracles have come to pass. Joshua already knew what to do for a memorial before the miracle. In the midst of the problem (the swollen Jordan river) the building blocks (stones) for the memorial were being gathered. When someone asks us what all the fuss is about, it gives us oportunity to give testamony to what God is either about to do or what he has already done.

  6. THE PROCESS OF CROSSING OVER

8 And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the LORD spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto the place where they lodged, and laid them down there.
9 And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests which bare the ark of the covenant stood: and they are there unto this day.
10 For the priests which bare the ark stood in the midst of Jordan, until everything was finished that the LORD commanded Joshua to speak unto the people, according to all that Moses commanded Joshua: and the people hasted and passed over.
11 And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over, that the ark of the LORD passed over, and the priests, in the presence of the people.

It is important to recognize the number of servants and the amount of teamwork involved in Israel possessing the promised land that GOD gave them. The same involvement is required today, if we are to possess the promises that GOD has made us; it will require that we The POFW find our place and serve faithfully.

Joshua – The GOD anointed leader
The Priests – The Ministers that carried the Ark (word, worship, faith)
Tribe Leaders – Ministry Directors establishing boundaries or memorials
The People – Whosoever will follow

Notice the bulk of responsibility fell on the shoulders of The Priests (The Ministers) they stood still in the middle of a miracle so that everyone else could pass over before them. (They were the FIRST ONE there and the LAST ONE to leave).

Notice the ARK went before the people and then followed after them. Meaning there will be times that GOD opens a door and then stands still while we walk through it.

Be sensitive to the Spirit, Voice, Will and Ways of GOD .

  7. 6That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones?

As I was raised in the church with a pentecostal father (sad to say he is no longer in the church) but I’m claiming my testimony and my dad will be saved and back in church doing the things that he taught me to do. We need to share our testimonys with our children. It’s time we grow up and do what God wants us to do and work for his kingdom

  8. 21And he spake unto the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones?

22Then ye shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land.

23For the LORD your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were gone over:

24That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the LORD your God for ever.

What a testimony the children of Israel were privilege to experience, so that they might remember and declare to their future generations. Many times we too often forget the testimonies that God has given us. I’ve got a testimony and everyday I want to declare it so that I might reach someone, liberate someone and be sensitive to the Lord to do His will.

  9. You do it your way, I do it my way! NO it wasn’t. Like that!!!”team work” God said: Joshua. You do this and this and then that…. And they obeyed, this journey was successful. Because of everybody being in one accord…….
22.then ye shall let your children know, saying Israel came over this Jordan on dry land.
    — beautiful! And it’s the now days with our children, this verse just game an idea, for now on, Everytime that the Lord does something for us make sure I have it in my records,so my children and my children’s children know that it was the “hand of the Lord
    who did it…
24.that all people of the earth might know the hand of the Lord, that it is mighty:that ye might fear the Lord your God forever
—we must keep in our mind all those times that God had intervened for us…. To God be the glory!!!!!!!!!!We must recognize it…

  10. 3 And command ye them, saying, Take you hence out of the midst of Jordan, out of the place where the priests’ feet stood firm, twelve stones, and ye shall carry them over with you, and leave them in the lodging place, where ye shall lodge this night.

20 And those twelve stones, which they took out of Jordan, did Joshua pitch in Gilgal.

21 And he spake unto the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones?

22 Then ye shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land.

Lets never forget what God has brought us out of!!! As I read this I could not help but remember the day that our Pastor tore down the small church on our altar & gave each and every one of us a piece of that church as a reminder to BE CHURCH every where we went. I still have that piece of wood & I wrote BE CHURCH on it. I have it in my box of important memories & achievements; but I carry with me a nail, always in my purse so I will never forget what I am supposed to be and what our mission is. Praise God & NEVER forget.

  11. 12-13 The Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh had crossed over in battle formation in front of the People of Israel, obedient to Moses’ instructions. All told, about forty thousand armed soldiers crossed over before GOD to the plains of Jericho, ready for battle. MSG

-Even after Moses was dead and gone they still obeyed him and added to their obedience the NEW leadership Joshua.

Joshua 1:12-15 Then Joshua addressed the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. He said, “Remember what Moses the servant of GOD commanded you: GOD,your God, gives you rest and he gives you this land. Your wives, your children, and your livestock can stay here east of the Jordan, the country Moses gave you; but you, tough soldiers all, must cross the River in battle formation, leading your brothers, helping them until GOD,your God, gives your brothers a place of rest just as he has done for you. They also will take possession of the land that GOD, your God, is giving them. Then you will be free to return to your possession, given to you by Moses the servant of GOD,across the Jordan to the east.”

16-18 They answered Joshua: “Everything you commanded us, we’ll do. Wherever you send us, we’ll go. We obeyed Moses to the letter; we’ll also obey you—we just pray that GOD,your God, will be with you as he was with Moses. Anyone who questions what you say and refuses to obey whatever you command him will be put to death. Strength! Courage!” MSG

    – We must not remove the foundations that our spiritual forefathers have set before us.
Proverbs 22: 8 Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.

  12. Sometimes in the process of destiny, we step out in faith and end up feeling stuck out in the middle somewhere along the way, between a rock and a hard place. Yet from the place of burden and trial, you have the opportunity to come out with a piece of the “battlefield” to be placed as a testimony of victory to speak to others of who your God is nd what He’s done for you. It is not for us to be crushed during the wait, but to bear the testimony (ark) God already gave us and faithfully accept the temporary addition of something that will become another testimony to remain for generations to come as a memorial.

  13. MSG verse 5-7 Joshua directed them, ‘cross to the middle of the Jordan and take your place in front of the Chest of God, your God . Each of you heft a stone to your shoulder, a stone for each of the tribes of the people of Israel, 6. so you’ll have something later to mark the occasion. When your children ask you, ‘What are these stones to you?’ 7. you’ll say, ‘The flow of the Jordan was stopped in front of the chest of the covenant of God as it crossed the Jordan stopped in it’s tracks. These stones are a permanent memorial for the People of Israel.” to me the stones represent the testimony that we learned about last night. A reminder in hard times where God rescued us from.

  14. The Miracle Of Our Deliverance
v6 ” What mean ye by these stones?”

To remind us, and our children where GOD brought us from. Out of darkness into HIS
marvelous light. We do have a story to tell tha LORD has done so much for us for HIS People we are special people. Been baptize in JESUS Name, filled with His Holy Spirit!
Once we were in bondage slaves to sin, but
JESUS set us free to be HIS servants, and HE our Master.
The scripture says: His servants you are to whom you obey
    GOD IS OUR DELIVER!

    “The Plan of Salvation”

(In yesterday’s blog we read the following…Joshua 3:5 And Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves: for to morrow the Lord will do wonders among you.)

Today’s blog we read;Joshua 4: 1And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over Jordan…

    ***Breaking it Down***

*When we “Repent” we become “clean”.

*When we are “BaptiZed” we pass through the river…(Ok, I know you’re thinking that, “they didn’t even get wet”, so you can’t compare it to baptism…but read these scriptures…1 Corinthians 10:1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; 2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat; 4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

*We receive the “Promise” when we get the Holy Ghost… The Children of Israel now enter into the Promise Land ready to conquer their enemy. They even brought rocks out of the river signifying the spiritual rock Christ.

    ***To God be the Glory***

  16. After this event in the lives of the children of God-what a testimony they had! These stones remained for generations and were a testimony to the next ones.

My testimony is that God brought me out of the ‘party-hearty’ and ‘anything goes’ life style. I had been raised in a Methodist church but there was nothing there to hold me so I left it as a teenager. But after a few years I began to search for someting real in the spirit and that took me into the world of spiritualists/ witchcraft. From there I searched Eastern religions and watched as New Age religious beliefs began to spring up. I was offered Bible studies but felt that the God of the Christians was fables and do good stories. BUT…I had a Pentecostal neighbor when we were living in a Military Post!!!
AND because of His great love, mercy and grace, He delivered me and I was able to close the doors spiritually to ones I had opened in my ignorance! If He can deliver ME from the grip of Satan, He can deliver my sons & step children, my daughters & sons in law, my grandchildren, my parents my sister and her boyfriend! In fact, there is nothing that MY God can’t do! It is an easy thing thing for Him because it is not His will that any persih but ALL come to repentance! 🙂

Kristy today has testfied this to me: “I know God has a miracle in store for us and no matter what the outcome I’m thankful for the time I have had with this baby.” Wow! Out of the mouth of babes…Kristy had received the HG at Bro Fieldings church when she was a young girl-now by the blood of the Lamb and the word of her testimony-God has the open door to do the miraclulous!

The doors are wide open for an earthquake, deliverance and salvation in my family! Thank you Jesus!

  17. The Weight of the Past

And command ye them, saying, Take you hence out of the midst of Jordan, out of the place where the priests’ feet stood firm, twelve stones, and ye shall carry them over with you, and leave them in the lodging place, where ye shall lodge this night
7Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.

When we come to God, there are things that we lay aside, weights that we carried as we crossed over from Sin, into Salvation. We leave the past behind, we try to forget the wilderness, but those stones are always there. A scar that wont go away, sometimes we think they are a reminder of our past, but in reading this we see that the stones werent a reminder of the wilderness, instead God intended for them to be a reminder of the miraculous, A sign that God parted the waters, a sign that God said yesterday wasn’t what I had for you, a sign of the miraculous.

  18. I love the Lord and fear Him a lot. He is Almighty and He made me and made me for His glory. I hope one day I will be able to find my calling with love and fear and fire for the Lord. But most of all I want to follow Him in all I do to be an example of who He is and what He stands for. With Christian love to yall Lord bless you.

  19. 24That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the LORD your God for ever.

  20. Vs. 21-22, ” And he spake unto the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones? Then ye shall let your children know, saying, Israel come over this Jordan on dry land.”

It is important to share our Testimony with our children of where God has brought us from, and what he has done in our lives, so that, they may know that the hand of God is mighty. And if he did it for us, he will do it for them.

  21. my God is good if he removed the water so that the people could pass and then replace it then i have no doubt that he will dry up the wet ares ( troubles heartache and pain) in my life and bring me through. i will keep praying and stand on His word so that when He gets ready to make a move i will be able to hear Him say be still my child im doing something great

  22. When the children of Israel repent and accept Jesus as Messiah I believe God will once again perform mighty miracles through them so the whole world might know and fear God. They are still his chosen people. When he said greater things will you do He was talking to his disciples all Jews. But I also believe the promise is for us too!!

  23. In our own lives we have gone through many trials. Some of these trials come multiple times, but how do we know what to do? we remember the stones.

  24. 4-14
Joshua was revered becase the miracle was taken as evidence of his closness to God.We need leaders we can revere not becase the preforme miracles but becase they are marked by an intimate personal relationship with God.

  25. There is a blessing in a testimony I am blessed by my inlaws testimony and I pray that I can pass thiers and add my own to my grandchildren.

  26. When The Water Gets Low

9And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests which bare the ark of the covenant stood: and they are there unto this day.

It is very important in times of blessing and favor to make a memorial, written or mental, of how God has proved himself faithful and mighty. In times of drought; dry times, when the waters aren’t flowing and bursting over the banks you can look at the stones in the bottom of your river and see that you’ve been there before… God can still make a way no matter why type of season you are in.

One other thing that really catches my attention is that they are now over the Jordan, I’m the promised land but it doesn’t mean they’ve arrived! Now, it’s time for battle, there’s more work to be done. When your promise comes celebrate and prepare for the next challenge.

    “The Fear of the Lord”

24That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the LORD your God for ever.

What does it mean to “Fear the Lord”?

    ***Break it Down***

When the Power of God falls and God preforms a mighty deed, one of the intended reactions God expects from us is a Holy Fear.

Proverbs 8:13 The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.

***If we do not hate pride, hate arrogancy, hate the evil way, and hate the froward (or perverse and lying) mouth…WE DO NOT FEAR THE LORD.

***If we listen to music or watch movies that glorify prideful behavior, arrogancy, or a perverse mouth…we do not fear the Lord…

    NEW TESTAMENT COMPARISON

Act 5:1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,
Act 5:2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
Act 5:3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?

***Ananias and Sapphira lied to the Holy Ghost…They did not fear the Lord…God sent an instant form of judgement…death… and look what happened after the HAND of God came down.

Act 5:5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.

    ***GREAT FEAR CAME UPON THEM***

A few verses later his wife died and the BIBLE SAYS

Act 5:11 And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.
Act 5:12 And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon’s porch.

***Notice God wanted the people “clean and sanctified” before the miracle of crossing the Jordan…

Is it possible that God is withholding many miracles from us today because we are not clean…and it would bring judgement upon us???

  28. iBlog in the Midnight Hour

    iPray
    iFear the Lord (part 2)

(1Sa 12:23) Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way:

(1Sa 12:24) Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.

(1Sa 12:25) But if ye shall still do wickedly, ye shall be consumed, both ye and your king.

  29. The 12 stones were a symbol of rememberance. They were also a reminder to Israel of God’s mighty power and greatness. As time went on the people had something that would show their children what God had done for them. Even though may not have a physical location to put a stone at for rememberance we do have our testimony and the written word of God! be not ashamed of the gospel of Christ or he will be ashamed of you. Show your children the greatness in living for God!

  30. As instructed in this chapter we should teach our children about the things God has done in our lives. We should testify about the goodness of God and all he has done for us! In doing so we leave a memorial for our children.

  31. 12 stones were taken from the river and twelve were placed in the river as a memorial. The stones placed in the river signified an end of the era, what they had been through. The stones brought from the river signified the new beginning, the destiny to attain.

Both sets of stones involved the crossing over.

Transition into destiny will involve laying down some old things, foundation, and pursuing new things, building.

The old testament is the foundation, 12 tribes. The new testament is the building, the 12 disciples.

New Jerusalem had 12 foundation stones, one for each tribe. Then 12 gates, one for each disciple. The new jerusalem is the bride.

We must be willing to start building, once we have laid our foundation.

The foundation and the building make up the big picture.

  32. A testimony is a powerful thing and it can do many wonders….just like it was preached Sunday night. ( thankyou God for that message) But what’s your testimony and who will you share it with?

  33. This chapter reminds me to never forget the victories, the things God has brought us through and how important it is to share these testimonies. Your past victory or your own testimony can be someone elses answer! Our own testimony parents can be the best example or our memorial to our children.

  34. 23For the LORD your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were gone over:

Setting up a memorial. This memorial was to be put here so that generations to come would be able to see what the Lord did for the Nation of Isreal. We must remember what God did in our lives, as a testimony to others. Sometimes our testimony is what will show people God’s love for them.

  35. 14On that day the LORD magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they feared Moses, all the days of his life.

When you obey God, he will lift you up. Alot of times we try to put ourselves at a level that God has not placed us and we end up failing. If we would wait for God to make his move, then everything we do will be blessed. He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him (Heb 11:6)

  36. 21And he spake unto the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones?

My girls have asked what does this mean, why did you do it that way? I try to live as an example of God and tell them constantly of the great things, God is doing, and has done, that they know, that He is God.

Small reminders placed all over in our everyday lives, will help us to keep this in the forefront our our minds too, so that when the enemy does attack, we are surrounded by reminders that there is 1 Lord, and His name is Jesus!

  37. The people of Isreal followed the words that Moses spoke even after he was dead. Also it says that in that day they feared Joshua. The fear they are speaking of is reverance for him. We should all take great reverance to the Man of God and do what he asks us to do even when ‘he’ is no longer around.

  38. This chapter illustrates a memorial. The children of Israel made a memorial for all to remember the mighty power of God. We can also leave a memorial if we humble ourselves before the Lord, and let God be God. May the good Lord bless you all in Jesus name, Amen
