Joshua 20

1The LORD also spake unto Joshua, saying,

2Speak to the children of Israel, saying, Appoint out for you cities of refuge, whereof I spake unto you by the hand of Moses:

3That the slayer that killeth any person unawares and unwittingly may flee thither: and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood.

4And when he that doth flee unto one of those cities shall stand at the entering of the gate of the city, and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city, they shall take him into the city unto them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them.

5And if the avenger of blood pursue after him, then they shall not deliver the slayer up into his hand; because he smote his neighbour unwittingly, and hated him not beforetime.

6And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days: then shall the slayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled.

7And they appointed Kedesh in Galilee in mount Naphtali, and Shechem in mount Ephraim, and Kirjatharba, which is Hebron, in the mountain of Judah.

8And on the other side Jordan by Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness upon the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh.

9These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them, that whosoever killeth any person at unawares might flee thither, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation.

  1. I want to talk to some church people about the Law of Unintentional Murder. The Bible says their were cities you were to go to if you wanted to be safe, but if you didn’t make it to these cities, then the “avenger of blood” could have his way with you. The reason some of us go through problems sometimes and we can’t find a reason why, is you have blood on your hands. Unintendily, someone came to church and through an action, a critical word, or a lack of attention, we murder that spiritual child, never realizing what we have done. The dead can’t tell you who killed them, or what we could have done to keep them alive. We chalk it up to them backsliding, while we walk around with blood on our hands. Unintended Murder.
If you want to get past where your at, maybe, just maybe you need to find a city of refuge and confess to the “high priest” what you’ve done. It wasn’t on purpose, it need not destroy you, but it needs to be dealt with

    “County Jail”

6And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment.

It was at a city of Refuge, in the Region of The Tarrant County Jail, that I woke up and turned to the Lord…

Just wanted to add this point before heading off to “iWork”…

****When you see a prison with a fence around it…the fence isn’t there just to keep those dudes in…but to keep the avenger out…

We all have entered into a hedged up city of God and the devil can only touch us when we exit the city, or if God allows it for a season…

(Psalms 34:7 KJV) The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.

    encamp H2583
    חנה
    chânâh
    khaw-naw’
A primitive root (compare H2603); properly to incline; by implication to decline (of the slanting rays of evening); specifically to pitch a tent; generally to encamp (for abode or siege): – abide (in tents), camp, dwell, encamp, grow to an end, lie, pitch (tent), rest in tent.

  3. In this scripture, it is clear that cities of refuge was granted for the desperate who committed such acts of murder to hide themselves within the congregation, and to be judged appropriately. But, what about the judgement, now it was up to the Church/Lord. Also, depending on your view point, which is better to die by the hand of the avenger or “The Church”. Justice will be the final outcome, I’m in hope of mercy & grace, and possibly a serious conversion of the individuals.

Moses/David/Samson/Paul just to name a few were difinately a few men who could also testify to a coversion by the Hand of God.

9These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them, that whosoever killeth any person at unawares might flee thither, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation.

    “Be Church”…..ihope…..Mark A. Ridenour……..

  4. thank u JESUS for the city of refuge u have given use in the city of fort worth you give your life for use so we dont have to wait in the city to be forgiven thank you for sheiding your BLOOD for our sins you are the strong tower we can run into it and be saved

  5. 6And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days: then shall the slayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled.

When the high priest died, the slayer could return him, and the avenger could not touch him.

When our high priest Jesus died, we the slayers could escape Judgement the avenger. However, we must stay in the city of refuge, the church, wherein lies our freedom, and our protection.

  6. My city of refuge is at His feet. It is there where I can always find refuge and strength. It is at His feet that His blood pours over me as I cry for His help with all I got. He is my Advocate that will stand & defend me from the accuser. My love above all loves, my Jesus!!!!

    • Maria thinking about crising the border to Mexico later on.and you know what everybody is saying(violence and more) I really want to see my parents…anyways tuff decision to make.so if Gods willin we will go and like I said.God has is and will be my shield, here and in Mexico……what do you think

  7. 1.-The Lord also spake unto Joshua saying.

    GOD IS MY REFUGE,my shield….
GODLY Concil, godly people, fear of the Lord……talk to you all later…

  8. I’m glad that the Scripture talks about this subject
To me it also means that when someone does a wrong deed don’t try to fix it yourself and try to punish them in your own way but take it to the Lord and maybe to one of the ministers (church ),and tell them about it
Maybe they can help you so it won’t turn out to be hurtful to them and the Lord and the church
Doesn’t it say somewhere in the Bible that the church is to be there for you to help carry those hurtful burdens? Well yes, if God does so does the people of God’s family
This was very real to me today
have a blessed and cherishing day in the Lord with love, Debbie.

  9. Verse 3 talks about the avenger of blood, But the original hebrew also means Kinsmen-redeemer! {Isa:41:14}.If we die in our sin we face Christ as our judge, but if we die forgiven we are protected and our judge suddenly becomes our salvation. When Adam and Eve sinned they hid and then they blamed others for there actions.Because of this they were removed from the garden and given a death sentence. So should we be like Adam and Eve who tried to hide there sin ? Remember when the slayer came to the city of refuge and went before the priest they would confess their sin and enter into the city of refuge.Do WE want to be seperated from God or enter into His promise? ,His city of refuge or be cast out. The choice is still ours!!

  10. REFUGE FROM THE AVENGER

2 Speak to the children of Israel, saying, Appoint out for you cities of refuge, whereof I spake unto you by the hand of Moses:
3 That the slayer that killeth any person unawares and unwittingly may flee thither: and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood.

satan hates the People of the name of Jesus! Jesus became the city of refuge through his own innocent blood. Thereby making HIS Church a city of Refuge “The Pentecostals of Fort Worth” is a city of refuge from the avenger.

Avenger – Strong’s H1350 – ga’al – to redeem, act as kinsman-redeemer, avenge, revenge, ransom, do the part of a kinsman.

The avenger seeks revenge an since we are ALL guilty of shedding blood accidentally or unknowing, there must be avengers seeking our lives. This is where accusation arises from the devil, he fills the roll of avenger for all who have sinned, in an attempt to keep people from the house of refuge so he can destroy them. Thanks be to GOD for the CHURCH, the city of Refuge.

    Refuge – Strong’s H4733 – miqlat – refuge, asylum

ASYLUM – 1: an inviolable place of refuge and protection giving shelter to criminals and debtors : sanctuary
2: a place of retreat and security : shelter
3: the protection or inviolability afforded by an asylum : refuge

The Church is the sanctuary to run to, the place of refuge, the place of asylum for people who have unknowingly Hebrews 6:6 … seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. Crucify Jesus afresh through sin.

REPENTANCE is the road to the City of REFUGE. The road of repentance is marked with signs pointing to the Cross and the place of sacrifice. Notice that the guilty party could vs. 6 And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment,! Stay in the CHURCH until judgement DAY!

Covered by the BLOOD of JESUS because he was purposely murdered satan cannot come close! Therefore JESUS and HIS Church are a City of Refuge!

    The BLOOD Still WORKS!

  11. God is our refuge and strength and ever present help. Praise God we only have to run to Jesus in our time of distress or need. We do not have to run to a location and stay there for the rest of our life, but instead stay with Jesus.

  12. Reminds me of a song…
God is my refuge and strength, my refuge and strength in the time of trouble, trouble

    2. Speak to the children of Israel, saying, Appoint out for you cities of refuge, whereof I spake unto you by the hand of Moses

3 That the slayer that killeth any person unawares and unwittingly may flee thither: and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood.

Yes God is our refuge but we may be used to lead someone in need to the refuge. As the church grows and people of all cultures, personalities, and backgrounds come to labor with us, it will be important for us to have each others back.

If our brother comes to us thinking he has offended someone it would be easy to put our two cents in and lead him the wrong way but we should love our brother enough to lead him to the word of God. This may spiritually save all of you and will help to not break the bond of unity in the church.

  13. V.2 speak to the children of Israel, saying Appoint out for you cities of refuge, wherefore i spake unto you by the hands of Moses. Thankful that there is a place where people can come and find a place of refuge, where the doors are always open to all who come. Nothing like finding a place where the Lord can hide you under the shadow of his wings, where his hands(GRACE) find us just where we are. Humbled by His Love where He has forgiven so that we also can forgive. The Greatest LOVE OF ALL<3

    • Sis Michelle your blog reminds me of
      Psalm 91

1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

What a Mighty and Faithful God we serve! 🙂 Praise God!

    • Stay in your place of Refuge

Verses 2-5 remind me of Shimei in I Kings 2

36 And the king sent and called for Shimei, and said unto him, Build thee an house in Jerusalem, and dwell there, and go not forth thence any whither.

37 For it shall be, that on the day thou goest out, and passest over the brook Kidron, thou shalt know for certain that thou shalt surely die: thy blood shall be upon thine own head.

38 And Shimei said unto the king, The saying is good: as my lord the king hath said, so will thy servant do. And Shimei dwelt in Jerusalem many days.

Shimei left his place to look for some of his men. And in the verses 42-44 shows the end result.

It also reminds be of Jude 1:6 where the angels which left their own habitation and are now in darkness.

      The Lord is our avenger!

  14. 3That the slayer that killeth any person unawares and unwittingly may flee thither: and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood.

4And when he that doth flee unto one of those cities shall stand at the entering of the gate of the city, and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city, they shall take him into the city unto them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them.

Because we unknowingly can be guilty of “killing” someone because of a comment they heard us say but have taken out of context, or our lack of encouragement given to someone struggling-we must daily die “repent” and be covered by His blood so that the avenger cannot accuse us! But stopping here would be wrong-we must seek Him daily as well so He can order our steps and lead us to the offended person to make things right. It’s not only us being saved-it’s the ones wounded by our actions.

    “The Avenger”

Brother Art got me thinking about the avenger… So I looked it up and will be meditating on this subject all day.

At first I thought we could compare the avenger with the devil… But as I thought about the definition of the Hebrew, I came to realize that there is a Kinsman Redeemer.

The Bible says that Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. (Romans 12:19 KJV).

There will be a day when judgement will come…but thank God for the city of Refuge; The city of Grace

  16. Thank God we can run to Him for refuge when saten starts coming at me saying I done wrong I can run to God the judge

  17. 3That the slayer that killeth any person unawares and unwittingly may flee thither: and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood.

The Lord knows the intentions of the heart. He allows us to run when we commit sin and seek refuge. The sinner is innocent until proven guilty. If proven innocent the sinner is allowed to return to the home he ran away from.

This shows me how trial is necessary to keep order. The Lord’s work is always in order. He loves his people, is showing me how repenting daily is so important because no one is perfect. He wants us to separate ourselves from the world and be holy. It’s the BLOOD he shed for us so we could have eternal life. Thank you for your BLOOD LORD wash me clean as snow.

  18. Verse 4 shows the importance of elders in your life. Not only are they in authority above you but can justify whether or not you have that “place” of refuge. Once you take yourself out of line with your authority you walk a fine line. Pastor watts and sis watts are the head of our refuge, we must uplift them daily in prayer to give them the strength for those who come in there refuge for repentance and help. The battle is bigger than any of us but with God and our elders we can defeat anything!

  19. bro morgan when i read this i thought about you and my boys. i cant help but thank God for taking them out of the streets and putting them in a place where they can sat down and listen to God. i know that it is still every individual choice to listen and obey but when God hides you from someone who is out for blood you will at least listen because time is all that you have and God doesnt just allow you in a place and leave you. He is right there with every immate all they have to do is be still long enough to hear what the Lord has to say. thank God for bro morgan because he did just that and he is a living testimony to every person that has been in that situation. God can and will use any place to hide His children. for example. i had traffic tickets from years ago and when i went to put them on payment plan, the judge told me that i was lucky that i wasnt in jail but my thinking was it wasnt luck it was God hiding me and i didnt even realize it until that day. God will do what His word says

  20. In this chapter it serves as an appendix to the allotment of the land. They show a people continuing to obey the Lord first by establishing cities of refuge centers which were central to the nations legal system

20-2 A VICTORIOPUS PEOPLE MUST CONTINUE TO OBEY

  21. v7 “Which is Hebron in the mountain of Judah.”

This verse tells me where there is communion (fellowship) prayer there IS PRAISE!
In HIS Presence we can find these cities
    refuge,safety,strength ,communion with JESUS

Intimacy with GOD is a place of prayer reserved just for JESUS, and from that place we can attain HIS Knowledge to serve and minister to JESUS ,each other, our guest, and
this city; but first of all prayer ( communication and trust is necessary .
Those refusing the LORD and HIS truth will face HIS wrath and judgement someday.
Our GOD is a loving GOD and it HIS will no one perish but come to repentance.
Our GOD does not easily give us up.
HE searches and seeks us out.

No man can come to me except the Father which hath sent me draw him: “JN.6:44
An expression of humility that can be a beautiful time of fellowship.

  22. All of these 6 cities were Levitical towns, probably considered as a sacred oblation to Jehovah for use of his Levites, and therefore God’s property, where manslayers could be placed under the protection of divine grace.

I agree with Bro. Joe if we say or look at someone in a way it could turn them away from our congregation. I pray that I haven’t done such a thing, and if I have I go to the person and ask for forgiveness.

  23. A new nation in a new land needed a new government. Many years earlier God had told Moses how this government should function. The all-knowing God of the Israelites recognized that people are often victims of the fallen world in which they live, and these cities were establishments of grace and mercy in a nation where murderers were normally condemned to death. The Levites were in charge of these cities and they ensured that God’s principles of justice and fairness were kept.

  24. Thank God He is our city of refuge. No longer do we have to run to a city, but now all we have to do is get on our knees and ask for forgiveness. He is our forgiveness.

  25. Thank God for life. True Life only comes from God. In him we find life and that more abundantly. Don’t be confused by what the unbelievers say, but believe every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God.

    Avenger

1 Thessalonians4:6 That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified.7 For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.8 He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.

    a·venge (-vnj)

    1. To inflict a punishment or penalty in return for; revenge: avenge a murder.
    2. To take vengeance on behalf of: avenged their wronged parents.

    ——————————————————————————–

[Middle English avengen, from Old French avengier : a-, to (from Latin ad-; see ad-) + vengier, to vindicate (from Latin vindicre, to claim; see vindicate).]

Jeremiah 5:9 Shall I not visit for these things? saith the Lord: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

(Luke 18:2 KJV) Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man:

(Luke 18:3 KJV) And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary.

    (Luke 18:4 KJV) And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man;

(Luke 18:5 KJV) Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.

(Luke 18:6 KJV) And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith.

(Luke 18:7 KJV) And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them?

(Luke 18:8 KJV) I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

(Revelation 6:10 KJV) And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?

    Gods wrath is the Avenger…
Gods Grace is the city of Refuge
The innocent blood of Jesus is the forgiveness that removes the curse

  27. What really struck me about this chapter is there are only 6 cities chosen to be cities of refuge out of all the cities of the promised land. Why so few? Did the people not see the need? If the cities of refuge can be compared to the church today do we as a people in general have that same mentality? Reading this verse made me think of Matthew 9:37 when it says the laborers are few. So many people need salvation from their sin, a place of refuge, and that place is the church. The church is the place to run so we can take them to the cross. As workers in the kingdom of God we need to recognize the need and be in position to help others just like we were once helped.

  28. this chapter shows how just God is. no man was judged without first standing before the congregation. Our city of refuge is now the church God has given us were we can have refuge from this world And stand before God were he can judge us righteously.

  29. Thank God we have a refuge!Lord help me watch my actions,my attitude, and to be careful of the things I say,so that I will be a help and not a hinderence for someone trying to find their way to the House of Refuge.

  30. 4And when he that doth flee unto one of those cities shall stand at the entering of the gate of the city, and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city, they shall take him into the city unto them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them.

The Church is the city of refuge for many people. God allows many different walks of people to enter our doors. We must be accept everyone, take them in and help shield and protect them spiritual;y, travailing until Christ be formed in them. Teach them, Disciple them. Help them grow in their knowledge and relationship with God. Then the time will come that they can stand spiritually and they will go out, maybe as a daughte work, maybe as a missionary and do the same for others as has been done unto them.

  31. 3That the slayer that killeth any person unawares and unwittingly may flee thither: and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood.

I feel like my thoughts on this are somewhat different than what others have already talked about. Sometimes the person we unintentionally “murder” is ourselves and we end up in self-sabatoging situations. It is God’s mercy that even in the dark valley of our own making, He still makes us to lie down in green pastures and leads us beside still waters in the place of His refuge. He restores the tattered soul and leads us in ways of righteousness that we may walk in repentance to His glory. Even in the place of mistakes there is comfort in the correcting and guiding rod and staff of the loving Shepherd who leads us back on track. He prepares provision in spite of us being our own enemy at times, an overflow of grace sufficient for our weaknesses. Anointing and blessing abound as the sweet goodness and mercy of God follow us all our days, to keep our back and help us with what lies in our wake. Oh to dwell in the house of the Lord forever, in the wonderful refuge of God.

  32. Run to the Judge!!

It is a day of “eye for an eye” and “blood for blood” revenge. Justice at this time in history is swift and harsh. Durring this time there are really two conflicting systems of justice. Their is an ancient tribal law (Nu35:6-29) and a developing sense of civil law. This is where the collision begins between state and church. They were never intended to though, the introduction of so many laws and commands can make one confused, even bothered by them. It was difficult and a work in progress, of course on the Lord’s watch. Men may sit in the seat to rule, but God is over everyone and everything. Consider…

Dan 2:21And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding: 22He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him. KJV

Job 12:14Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built again: he shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.KJV

In this brutal time the accussed has only 2 options be killed, or run to one of the 6 cities of refuge. It may be a stretch in distance, but if you draw a nigh to the Lord he will draw an nigh to you. He will allow you to stand trail. In 2 Sam 24:14David said to Gad, “I am in deep distress. Let us fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercy is great; but do not let me fall into the hands of men.” David throws himself upons Gods mercy because he knows that he has done wrong for conducting a census of his fighting men. He has 3 options given him by God and he choose the city of refuge, he builds an altar and makes a sacrifice. The way David conducts himself is alot how God expects us to act after was have commited sin weither intentionally or deliberately. God always supplies a way when there is no way in sight. Its because we have do walk by faith and not by sight. Walk by his Holy Spirit and not by laws that we cannot keep. Thank you Jesus for your blood, that I may come before you when I sin to repent and be forgiven by the covering of your blood.

Ro 5:20Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: 21That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.KJV

Gal 3:10For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. 11But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. KJV

Heb 10:1For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. 2For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins. 3But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year. 4For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. KJV

  33. This chapter illustrates justice. The Lord is, and always has been more than fair; he still provides refuge today just as was found in these cities. We must repent and seek refuge under his Blood if we want to live with him, for none are worthy without its washing of our sins. May the good Lord bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  34. Thank God for his refuge! The blood of Jesus is our refuge and its a much better place than the refuge here. Its alike in the fact that if we stepout of the refuge, beign te church, or our covering from our angel, that we are subject to the avenger still today. Lord help us to stay in your refuge and never loose sight of where we are and who you are.

  35. 3That the slayer that killeth any person unawares and unwittingly may flee thither: and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood.

    jesus is my refuge

  36. This chapter talks about The Safe Towns, The Cities of Refuge, or Asylum-Cities. Our church in the midst of this city is just that, where anyone can come and be saved! There is room in the House of God for everybody! (As Pastor Cornwell in Wichita, would always remind us.)

  37. There is nothing like learning from your kids.
All day I was chewing on this chapter. The avenger was someone who was out for revenge. They were looking to catch the person who did something wrong, even if it was on accident. As I listened to the kids playing today I heard several times, “I’m sorry, I did not mean it.” While thier avenger is mommy with the spanking stick, they were still seeking refuge, mercy, and forgiveness.
The cities in today’s passage were set up like this for adults. As kids might accidently step on someone or hit a friend with a toy when playing wildly, when you still make mistakes, but they are often bigger (hurting/killing someone in a wreck or cutting someone with sharp words).
Thank you JESUS that we no longer have to go to a specific city and ask a man for refuge. A man can never really know your heart and motives the way that GOD knows them. GOD knows all your thoughts and your heart. You only have to ask for forgiveness and mercy and it is granted.
Thank you JESUS that our city of refuge is where ever HE is and that we can be safe form any blood thirsty avenger who is coming to seek revenge on our mistakes. We only need to rest in HIM and stay in HIM and we will be safe from all of our advesaries that are coming to collect.
