Joshua 23

1And it came to pass a long time after that the LORD had given rest unto Israel from all their enemies round about, that Joshua waxed old and stricken in age.

2And Joshua called for all Israel, and for their elders, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers, and said unto them, I am old and stricken in age:

3And ye have seen all that the LORD your God hath done unto all these nations because of you; for the LORD your God is he that hath fought for you.

4Behold, I have divided unto you by lot these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, even unto the great sea westward.

5And the LORD your God, he shall expel them from before you, and drive them from out of your sight; and ye shall possess their land, as the LORD your God hath promised unto you.

6Be ye therefore very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that ye turn not aside therefrom to the right hand or to the left;

7That ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow yourselves unto them:

8But cleave unto the LORD your God, as ye have done unto this day.

9For the LORD hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath been able to stand before you unto this day.

10One man of you shall chase a thousand: for the LORD your God, he it is that fighteth for you, as he hath promised you.

11Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love the LORD your God.

12Else if ye do in any wise go back, and cleave unto the remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you:

13Know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.

14And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof.

15Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.

16When ye have transgressed the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed yourselves to them; then shall the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you.

  1. Biblical Euphemism
vs14 “this day I am going the way of all the earth”

Okay so I was reading this verse over and over again because I didnt get it til I read further, and searched it out. Turns out its a euphemism, or a nice way of saying something not quite so nice. When women go to the “powder room”, we know exactly what they mean. When someone has the “gift if gab” we know that the conversation won’t be ending right away. One such biblical euphemism is the phrase that someone is about to “go the way of all the earth” (Jos 23:14; 1Ki 2:2). This is a nice way of saying that someone is about to die; the end is near. For Joshua in this passage and in 1Kings ,it is the time to give final words of exhortation and blessing to those they love and those who will lead the people after them. They are preparing to die, to go the way all things eventually go, “the way of all the earth”.

Other than that my fav vs is 12-13 Joshua speaks the same echoed warning thats been said since the time of Sarah and Abraham, don’t marry these heathens, you will become unequally yoked. Doing so they will become snares and traps for you, a whip on your back and thorns in your eyes. Consider..

Ps 69:22Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap. KJV

Prv 7:21With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him.
    22He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks;
23Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.
24Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth.
25Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths.
26For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her.
27Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death. KJV

  2. Thank the Lord for e everything and he will keep you safe. He doesn’t want us to worship strange gods
I just want to thank the Lord for the pastor and sis Watts for being a caring and loving couple to me and my husband
I’ve learned alot from listening to them
    And to God’s word.
Amen and amen thanks for understanding me

  3. In this chapter Joshua makes the statement ” the Lord your God” several times in his charge to them. He wanted them to see that he was going on but God would stay on their side as long as they were obedient to His command.
Joshua reminds them of Gods faithfulness to His word but also to His correction if they go astray.
Verse 16 was a eye opener” and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you.” Joshua is telling them you may be walking in the land of promise now but the day you transgress against God you will die in that promise and never get to experience all that God has.

“The Battle Belongs to the Lord”

(Joshua 23:10 KJV) One man of you shall chase a thousand: for the LORD your God, he it is that fighteth for you, as he hath promised you.

God is a God of order. He set the earth into motion, set the seasons in order; once he speaks something…that is the way it is…But there is something about us humans…when we align ourselves with His Word…what He already spoke in His Word…Then instead of us fighting the devil…God starts fighting for us empowering us with supernatural Strength to not only take down one devil…but thousands.

  5. 14. And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof.

Joshua is reminding them that God has done everything he promised he would do. He held up His end of he bargain, so to speak; as long as they continued obeying, everything would be ok.

    2 Peter 3:9
“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise…”

  6. 10:One man of you shall chase a thousand:for the Lord your God,he it is
that fighteth for you,as he hath promised you.

God will fight for us,when we are obedient to His Word.

  7. joshua tell the people what they need to do to fallow God the only one true GOD and lets them know what will happen if they dont so many times we as GOD people see somthing and say thats not for me and when we say that are trubles began if we have ever said i dont see it that way thats when we need to stop and take a close look at our walk with GOD and make sure we keep the gods of this world out like GOD comanded we are warrened what will happen if we dont .so before we do somthing that is a question ask your selfs WWBWD what would bro watts do and them pray about it its harder to make a bad decision when your on your knees

  8. THE GREAT VALUE OF THE BALANCE OF OBEDIENCE

10 One man of you shall chase a thousand: for the LORD your God, he it is that fighteth for you, as he hath promised you.

11 Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love the LORD your God.

12 Else if ye do in any wise go back, and cleave unto the remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you:

13 Know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.

In verse 10 we see the power of the balance or weight of authority in submission to obeying the LORD in all things and not allowing ourselves to become entangled in the affairs of this world and life.

in verse 13 we see the dreaded danger of the balance of weight of disobedience and refusing to submit to the LORD in all things and keeping ourselves as John stated in 1John 5:21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

However we are charged by Jude in Jude 21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

God has made life simple for us: Love, Serve, Obey and Live. Resist, Rebel, Reject and Lose. We the carnal flesh are the guilty parties that have complicated life. Choose obedience today and serve the LORD.

  9. 8 But cleave unto the LORD your God, as ye have done unto this day.

9 For the LORD hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath been able to stand before you unto this day.

    THE DEFINITION OF CLEAVE IS:
1.to adhere closely; stick; cling (usually followed by to ).

2.to remain faithful (usually followed by to ): to cleave to one’s principles in spite of persecution.

    King James Version:
1Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love the LORD your God.

12Else if ye do in any wise go back, and cleave unto the remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you:

    The Message Version:
11-13 “Now, vigilantly guard your souls: Love God, your God. Because if you wander off and start taking up with these remaining nations still among you (intermarry, say, and have other dealings with them), know for certain that God, your God, will not get rid of these nations for you. They’ll be nothing but trouble to you—horsewhips on your backs and sand in your eyes—until you’re the ones who will be driven out of this good land that God, your God, has given you.

The Bible says in Deut. 30:19 I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:

You have a choice to cleave unto God & be blessed or cleave unto the world & be cursed, & you children (thy seed) will live or die according to your decision.
Solomon in all his wisdom still cleaved unto women of other religions with other gods & his end was cursed. Saul did the same thing, we need to be careful what we are holding to our heart closer than God. God should be & should remain our first Love above ALL!!!

  10. In this scripture, it’s clear who’s fight this was all along. But, remember there are stipulations, stand your ground, stay in covenant with God, and don’t bow to their Gods. Don’t mix and mingle sort of speak…stay equally yoked. You know I would love run out of town a thousand of our enemies to the body of Christ. This is not always people…debt, desease, confusion, immorality, demonic forces, only to name few.

We can..we will…we stand…for the one true God…The God of Abraham, Issac , and Jacob…Jesus Christ.

    “Be Church”…iexhault Jesus…Mark A. Ridenour.

  11. 16When ye have transgressed the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed yourselves to them; then shall the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you.

Many would say that these actions are unfair. Why would God destroy these people and curse their land.

God simply tells them the consequences that will come. God knows what we need and protects us from many things. Obedience keeps us from destruction.

  12. In this chapter Joshua pretty much summarizes the land of Israel up. Joshua called the elders of Israel of the nation and to Shiloh, where the Tabernacle was in order to warn them most earnestly of the dangers of apostatizing from Jehovah.

  13. Joshua point blank said stay in the will of God n serve no other gods are God will get angry and take His hands off of you. Now that still stands today if we serve material or flesh then we are taking a risk of God removing His hand. Just as the word meant back then it means the same today and I want to stay in the will of God

  14. A remeberance of two promises

15Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.

God had promised the people victory, but at Moses death, God had promised Joshua destruction. Everything we work to attain on this earth will one day be destroyed, it is a promise that God made. But before that comes to pass, God has promised that we will conquer this land and that it will serve him. We are assured of Revival, of winning not just this region, but this world, but with rejoicing comes understanding, that when we are rejoicing in heaven, every one left behind will be living in destruction.

I remember crying as I witnessed to someone one day, because the reality hurt me so much, I told him, I don’t know what hurts more, realizing you might not be in heaven, or realizing that when I get thier, I wont even remember you. If you love them. get them saved

  15. 8But cleave unto the LORD your God, as ye have done unto this day.

Who else is there for us to cling too? Once you have killed the old man of sin, there is nothing to return back too. Cleave unto the Lord your God, for I know he will cleave unto you as well. We are a blessed people with a God that loves us, with a fierce jealousy. We are his bought with the price of his blood. How thankful I am!

  16. v6 ” Be ye therefore very courageous to keep and to do ALL that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that ye turn not aside there from to the right hand or to the left;

Joshua had a full heart of good advise
He reminded the Israelites of GOD’S goodness, to those that are willing to be obedient and take good advise.( You can lead a horse to the water but you can’t make him drink.)
When we study the scriptures we find the counsel of the LORD,”Nay is Nay and Yea is Yea”
My prayer is that i would learn to hear and do the good counsel of the LORD, and our leadership. To rise above the present and see the future with an open heart and mind.
Knowing that if we choose to be obedient to HIS WORD GOD will have something special for us as HE did for the Israelites.

Pr.1:5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

  17. Msg If you leave the path of the Covenant of God, your God, that He commanded you, go off and serve and worship other Gods, God’s anger will blaze out against you. In no time at all there will be nothing left of you, no sign that you have ever been in this good land that he gave you.

If we don’t receive the blessings of God there is no one else to blame but ourselves..

  18. The Importance of Your Relationship Status

11 Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love the LORD your God.

    This verse could also say:
Intensely and Fiercely guard with barb wire your soul, that you keep an intimate affection for the Lord your personal God.

    *What is this verse conveying?
This verse is expressing the importance of our relationship status with our Lord. We must strive to keep a ” Happily Married” status with our Lord.

*How do we keep a “Happily Married” status?
As we pray and “Eat this Book”-by understanding, consuming and applying to our lives we enter into spiritual intimacy with the Lord. We will begin to “know” him more intimately and in return the Lord knows us more deeply.

*Why is it so important? Isn’t knowing about Him enough?

1 Cor 8:3 But if any man love God, the same is known of him. KJV

Amplified Bible puts it like this
3 But if one loves God truly [ [a] with affectionate reverence, prompt obedience, and grateful recognition of His blessing], he is known by God [ [b] recognized as worthy of His intimacy and love, and he is owned by Him].

When we just know of him or about Him we aren’t committed and there’s no deep affection. Your relationship status would be ” Single- just an acquaintance”

I want to hear Him say, “Well done, good and faithful servant; …… enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” (Matt. 25:23)

God forbid any of us hear the words …. “I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” Matt. 7:23

    * What is your relationship status? Let’s work on making it a “Happily Married” status while it is still day. Let’s be faithful.

  19. The Curse of Going Back.

12Else if ye do in any wise go back, and cleave unto the remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you:

As it was for the children of Isreal during Moses’ time; The children wanted to go back to Egypt. Which we know as a type of the world. Joshua was trying to convay to them that if they were to ever go back to there old ways, that God’s protection would not be on them. As this is true for even today. I am sad to say that I know a few people who have been in the truth and then have turned away. They are now misrible and are only worried about what is happening in their lives. Just here lately, I have a new coworker that told me that they are always worried about what is going to happen next in their life. Thank You Jesus that I know who I believe in.

  20. This chapter illustrates sound counsel. Joshua forewarned the children of Israel what would happen if they turn away from God. We today would be wise to heed this counsel also, if we want the Lord’s hand of protection on us. May the good Lord bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  21. 15Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.

16When ye have transgressed the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed yourselves to them; then shall the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you

The Lord told Moses that the people would turn back after his death and now Joshua gives them them the same admonishment. And just like God blessed them when they obeyed and followed, he will also punish and drive them them out of the land & the the nations around them become snares as they were warned.

  22. This chapter is Joshua’s final exortation to his people before he dies he is charging them first to recognize and give God the glory for all God has done. Then he is telling them that they must continue to serve God and walk in his ways if they want to be blessed as they have always been. So should we also remember everything God has done for us and serve him all the days of our life.

  23. 6 Be ye therefore very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that ye turn not aside therefrom to the right hand or to the left;

7 That ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow yourselves unto them:

8 But cleave unto the LORD your God, as ye have done unto this day.

We find a similar command from Moses to Joshua in Deuteronomy 31:
    you.

6Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

7And Moses called unto Joshua, and said unto him in the sight of all Israel, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou must go with this people unto the land which the LORD hath sworn unto their fathers to give them; and thou shalt cause them to inherit it.

8And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.

What is passed on from generation to generation is so important. If we have zeal and determination for the kingdom of God, so will our children. If we become sluggish and non-chalant for the kingdom of God, so will our children. We cannot possess the “don’t do as I do, do as I say” mentaity. We must live what we believe, and believe what we live so that we too can pass on to future generations the commandments of the Lord: Be of good courage. Be in the world, but not of the world. Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind. Fight the good fight of faith. All of these are important elements that we must instill in those around about us. Our live is an epistle, known and read of all men. What does it say?

  24. Joshua gives the children of Israel clear charge concerning separation: they will either be separated unto God or separated from Him. We all must face that same decesion every day; whom shall we serve?

  25. We msut remember the things that God has done for us and not go back to what we once were. Too often God helps us get out of a problem only to go and do the same things again (i.e. finances, debt, etc). We also may have made our own personal covenant with the Lord about something and like a New Year’s resolution within days or weeks it has fallen to the wayside. however, God does not take such things so lightly and somehow we will pay the price for breaking the convenant.

11Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love the LORD your God.

(Revelation 2:4 KJV) Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.

(Revelation 2:5 KJV) Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.

LOVE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ALL THINGS.

(1 Corinthians 13:13 KJV) And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

  27. 13 Know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.

How quickly our blessing becomes our curse when we step out of Gods will. One must be careful not to just eye the prize/blessing but to seek Him who gives and can take away the same.

  28. 1And it came to pass a long time after that the LORD had given rest unto Israel from all their enemies round about, that Joshua waxed old and stricken in age

The Lord will give you rest. In fact, true rest can only come from God. After we’ve been drained of all of lifes issues, God knows how to provide comfort to us at the end of the day.

  29. 10One man of you shall chase a thousand: for the LORD your God, he it is that fighteth for you, as he hath promised you.

    WOW!

Gods got your Back (Cortt Chavis)

When you step into the ring with a professional fighter you are only thinking about what he is going to do. The world says that he is the greatest fighter out there but still you only have to worry about what he can do. When you engage with a child of God you engage with God. No adversary can win that fight.

I pray that i heed my relationship with God continually and keep him in my corner.

    iLove

  30. The chapter talks about Joshua’s charge (reminder/warning) to the People of Israel. He is telling them to stay alert, stay strong/steady, obedient, and vigilantly guard your souls.

Verses 15-16 in the NLT read….”But as surely as the LORD your God has given you the good things he promised, he will also bring disaster on you if you disobey him. He will completely destroy you from this good land he has given you. If you break the covenant of the LORD your God by worshiping and serving other gods, his anger will burn against you, and you will quickly vanish from the good land he has given you.”

  31. 3And ye have seen all that the LORD your God hath done unto all these nations because of you; for the LORD your God is he that hath fought for you.

WOW that is AWESOME! The LORD fought for them. When has GOD fought for you? If you can’t think of a time when GOD has fought for you then maybe you should check to see what you are doing. If you are not following his will then he won’t fight for you. Wouldn’t that be amazing to be able to say that GOD has fought for you!

15Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.

When GOD fullfills his promises he doesn’t just give good things to good people. When GOD does what he says he is going to do it is with all of his intentions, not ours. I’m glad that he knows better and his will is done and not mine.
