Joshua 24

1And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God.

2And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: and they served other gods.

3And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac.

4And I gave unto Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave unto Esau mount Seir, to possess it; but Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.

5I sent Moses also and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did among them: and afterward I brought you out.

6And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye came unto the sea; and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with chariots and horsemen unto the Red sea.

7And when they cried unto the LORD, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes have seen what I have done in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness a long season.

8And I brought you into the land of the Amorites, which dwelt on the other side Jordan; and they fought with you: and I gave them into your hand, that ye might possess their land; and I destroyed them from before you.

9Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and warred against Israel, and sent and called Balaam the son of Beor to curse you:

10But I would not hearken unto Balaam; therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his hand.

11And you went over Jordan, and came unto Jericho: and the men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; and I delivered them into your hand.

12And I sent the hornet before you, which drave them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; but not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.

13And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat.

14Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.

15And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

16And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the LORD, to serve other gods;

17For the LORD our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed:

18And the LORD drave out from before us all the people, even the Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve the LORD; for he is our God.

19And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve the LORD: for he is an holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions nor your sins.

20If ye forsake the LORD, and serve strange gods, then he will turn and do you hurt, and consume you, after that he hath done you good.

21And the people said unto Joshua, Nay; but we will serve the LORD.

22And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen you the LORD, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses.

23Now therefore put away, said he, the strange gods which are among you, and incline your heart unto the LORD God of Israel.

24And the people said unto Joshua, The LORD our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey.

25So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem.

26And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak, that was by the sanctuary of the LORD.

27And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the LORD which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God.

28So Joshua let the people depart, every man unto his inheritance.

29And it came to pass after these things, that Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old.

30And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathserah, which is in mount Ephraim, on the north side of the hill of Gaash.

31And Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the LORD, that he had done for Israel.

32And the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, in a parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for an hundred pieces of silver: and it became the inheritance of the children of Joseph.

33And Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him in a hill that pertained to Phinehas his son, which was given him in mount Ephraim.

  1. A continuance of the goaspel is how we live our lives. To show others Jesus. I wanted to recap my comment from yesterday ….strange gods it means to me that we shouldn’t worship them we shouldn’t know them or want to know them. God doesn’t want us to He thinks they are strange He known that they are strangers to man we can’t have a personal relationship with them like we can with Jesus they are just plain strange in God’s language. I like how Jesus talks to me in his terms so I can understand it I don’t want to know them and I’m not going to know them. The only true God I want to know is my friend Jesus. AMEN AND AMEN. love Him dear God.

  2. COVENANT AT MEMORY LANE

Joshua ushers the Leaders of the children of Israel down memory lane, reminding them of the wonderful works of God. Lest they allow time and circumstance to steal the memory of the many miracles from them.

Joshua makes a statement in verse 15 “if it seem evil to serve the Lord” this statement has stuck with me for years,I have witnessed too often people all of the sudden feel like their serving the Lord is in vain or an evil service. It is obvious this feeling arises in these who forget the pit they were dug from. Hence Memory Lane.

The second part of this Memory Lane is the covenant of the rock at the tree. The rock is Christ Jesus, the tree is the Cross.

  3. 14Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.

15And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

Joshua draws a figurative line in the sand and calls to rememberance how God has been gracious to His people by delivering them out of the hands of the Egyptpians and brought great victory to their lives at the crossing of the red sea, the battle of Jericho and the many defeats that they were victorious in since possessing their promised land. The people, awed by the mercies of the Lord in their lives, steps over the lines and vows to Joshua and to God they will serve the Lord their God all the days of the lives. Sometimes in life we just need to take a minute and call to our minds where the Lord has brought us from and all the many things that He has been so faithful in providing and delivering into our hands, All too often the pressures and weights of the world blur our vision and we don’t see clearly and from the right persective what have been blessings in our life. Lord help us to stand up and draw a line in the sand today and step over the line and be on the Lords side. This means putting away strange gods that we may have allowed into our lives: anything that distracts us from our God called purpose can become a God to us, entertainment, facebook, videos, games, work, pleasing self, etc. Our God is holy and jealous and He will not tolerate being second, third or tenth. He must be first and foremost.

    “The Fear of the Lord”

What does it really mean to Fear the Lord?

ANSWER = to serve him in sincerity and in truth

(Joshua 24:14 KJV) Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.

(Joshua 24:15 KJV) And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

    What does “Serve” mean?

    SERVE H5647
    עבד
    ‛âbad
    aw-bad’
A primitive root; to work (in any sense); by implication to serve, till, (causatively) enslave, etc.: – X be, keep in bondage, be bondmen, bond-service, compel, do, dress, ear, execute, + husbandman, keep, labour (-ing man), bring to pass, (cause to, make to) serve (-ing, self), (be, become) servant (-s), do (use) service, till (-er), transgress [from margin], (set a) work, be wrought, worshipper.

    iWork = to serve

Sometimes church folk might feel as if they are in bondage…They are simply “SERVING THE LORD”

Sometimes wives may feel like they are slaves…”They are simply serving thier husbands”.

Sometimes children feel as though they are in bondage and are slaves…they are not…they are simply serving the Lord.

  5. 12And I sent the hornet before you, which drave them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; but not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.

This a promise that is true to this day. God will drive out our enemy and allow us to take what was our enemies. It will be ready for us to use!

  6. v31 And Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the LORD, that he had done for Israel.

This tells me that even though Joshua had died Israel still served the LORD.
Some people have more power in their dead bones than those that are in living bodies, as Elisha did in. 2 Kings 13:21
There is power in obedience to the
    Word Of GOD!

  7. Josh. 24:31 And Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the LORD, that he had done for Israel.

The test is not whether we can serve God with our elders, and Pastor around. The true test is whether or not we can live for God when nobody is looking.

1Cor. 3:13 Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.

  8. v19 ” Ye cannot serve the LORD: for he is an Holy GOD: he is a jealous GOD: he will not forgive your transgressions nor your sins.”

Something s are stronger than death and that is the precious flowing blood of
JESUS CHRIST. HIS BLOOD STILL WORKS!
    Our righteousness comes from HIM

It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed because his compassion fail not

    “SERVE THE LORD IN SINCERITY”

*How so we serve the Lord in sincerity?

    sincerity H8549
    תּמים
    tâmı̂ym
    taw-meem’
From H8552; entire (literally, figuratively or morally); also (as noun) integrity, truth: – without blemish, complete, full, perfect, sincerely (-ity), sound, without spot, undefiled, upright (-ly), whole.

entire – without blemish – perfect – without spot

(Exodus 12:5 KJV) Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:

God has always required our best.

(2 Peter 3:14 KJV) Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

    (Jude 1:12 KJV) These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;

  12. 15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

Is a day of choices, who are you going to work for, who are you going to believe, what, where, how, & in whom are you going to stand????

Joshua goes through the history of all the miracles God has done for them. He reminds the people where they came from, all the victories that God has given them, and what still to come; with the only people to see who’s report would they believe. He stands alone & says it simple; AS FOR ME AND MY HOUSE WE WILL SERVE THE LORD!!! He is saying I will believe the report of the Lord, He has brought us this far, He will see we make it to the finish line.

  13. 15And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

This scripture reminds me of when I was younger, my father would always say to someone who asked us why do we go to a Pentecostal church and why do we choose to serve someone you can’t see or touch… My dad would say “for me and my house we will serve the LORD…

  14. The covenant between Israel and God was that the people would worship and obey the Lord alone. Their purpose was to become a holy nation that would influence the rest of the world for God. The conquest of Canaan was a means to achieve their purpose, but Israel became preoccupied with the land and lost sight of the Lord. The same can happen in our lives. We can spend so much time on the means that we forget the end – to glorify him.

    Jos 24:15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve;

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO SERVE THE LORD

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO SERVE SATAN

    CAN A PERSON SERVE BOTH

    (Matthew 4:8 KJV) Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

(Matthew 4:9 KJV) And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

(Matthew 4:10 KJV) Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

(Matthew 4:11 KJV) Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

***(Matthew 6:24 KJV) No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

  16. In this scripture, it is difinately an confirmation of the seriousness and importance of whom you are going to serve. He is a jealous God, and we will have no other Gods before us. You see it’s still a matter of choice, God will not force you to serve, study, pray, sow, worship, or any other source of works/serving, but he gives you the free will to choose this day whom ye will serve. My house will be serving the Lord, and King of Glory, and there is none other who is worthy of my praise. Praise you Lord Jesus Christ, for all that you have done, and for all that your going to do, Amen & Amen.

15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

    ….ibelieve……………….Amen.

  17. Vs 7 And when they cried unto the LORD, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes have seen what I have done in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness a long season.

So thankful that when we cry out to the Lord he delivers us from our sins and put a darkness between our new life in Him and our old sinful life in the world through baptism in Jesus Name.

    The Blood still works!

  18. A beautiful end to a great man of Gods life. Here we see Joshua is reminding Gods people of all the great things God has done in their lives and making a covenat with them to make sure that they never stop serving God. Joshua said choose ye this day! In other words make up your mind today! As for me and my family we will serve the Lord!

  19. 4And I gave unto Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave unto Esau mount Seir, to possess it; but Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.

5I sent Moses also and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did among them: and afterward I brought you out.

As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated. (Romans 9:13 KJV)

Jacob was chosen, Esau was rejected. Esau received his land quickly but the blessing was shallow compared to the great spiritual blessing that came with the natural blessing God had for Jacob. In contrast, while Jacob’s blessing was better, it also required a process for fulfillment. We face various crossroads in our lifetime, like getting something ok right away or waiting and getting something wonderful later. It’s like when Esau sold his birthright for a quick meal. He got that quick gratification of something ok right up front and bypassed the process, but he really missed out later down the road. We can’t shun the process, God has it all work out for us to reap if we faint not.

  20. Looking back on the past is one of the best ways to spot how our future should be, how it should be better. If we first look at our starting point we can thank God for where he has placed us now, and be hopeful for what he has in store next. The greatest director, compass, lamp unto your feet and light unto your path is the Lord. I love the way the Lord says “But I took your fathers” “I led him threw” “I gave him” “I sent” and “I afflicted the Egyptians by what “I” did there” “He brought the sea over them and covered them” ….He is conducting a symphony in the lives of those whom allow it. God planned it, God did it, God even used those obedient people who loved the Lord. He isnt finished, he can do it for us church. He’s begun long ago …Phillipians 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ KJV

  21. Joseph’s Bones Finally Rest in Peace in the Promised Land!!

32And the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, in a parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for an hundred pieces of silver: and it became the inheritance of the children of Joseph.

Finally Joseph’s bones are laid to rest in peace. Joseph knew that the Israelites where going to be delivered out of Egypt and into the promised land, he stood behind this prophecy into death and charged Israel to burry his bones in the promised land and amongst his forefathers. Fulfilled, every word from the Lord will come true!!!l

Ex 13:19And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him: for he had straitly sworn the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you; and ye shall carry up my bones away hence with you.KJV

  22. 14Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.

15And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD

They see in looking back that when they followed and obeyed they were blessed and also can see that when they disobeyed, the were punished. I desire the blessings of God-even like the blessings of Jabez for 3 months like Obed-Edom…so as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord! I truly believe that God is up to something and in the next 3 months we will see a great move of God’s hand for our next church facility! I am expecting God’s people to be blessed financially so this facility can be received without debt! And I am also believing that this new facility will have many classrooms, nurserys and a yoouth center and more! (not to mention backsliders coming home) As was prophesied by Bro Mahaney years ago, when 75 backsliders come home, we will see an awesome revival in of new converts in this region of Fort Worth!

  23. This chapter illustrates choice. Joshua made it clear it had to be their choice to serve the Lord, this is still true today we will only serve the Lord if we so choose. “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” There is no greater live than living for Jesus. May the good Lord bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  24. After we are “saved” we shoud be diligent not to continue in the same sins as before. Our lives should reflect our true repentance.

  25. 15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

I have heard this scripture in my mind thousands of times. I’ve really never read it to now. I guess i have heard it through the preaching but I cant pin point the time or place. This scripture has always been a reminder for me of how God is serious about what we let into our minds. It takes diligence and perseverance to serve our God. An indomitable spirit is one that cannot be subdued or defeated. This scripture has played itself in my mind every time the adversary tries to speak lies into my ear. Automatically the Lord whispers “choose this day whom ye will serve” and I respond”as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD”

Its amazing to me how the word of the LORD will stick with you when test comes. I had a chance yesterday to completely backslide and the Lord was just absolutely throwing his word into my mind reminding me what he expects from me. If this church family had not been so diligent in the care of this new convert, i would have been in a mess yesterday. Thank You POFW! If Pastor and Sister Watts had not poured themselves into me the way they have the past months, i would have been in a mess yesterday. Thank You Pastor and Sister Watts. Most of all i thank the word of God breathed into my mind constantly, that reminds me who he is, who I am, where I’ve come from, and where I’m going. See, by the word of God I would have been a fool to throw away his promise. He keeps me in remembrance daily of how great he is. Let us not forget how great he is.

This chapter was a recap of how great God has been to Israel. If Israel wanted to backslide, they could have come straight back to , just like I did yesterday, all the things God had done for them. I’m sure that that scripture that plays in my mind always is also there and has been there since it was written for multitudes of people, just the way it is for me.

I thank God again for his word. Let it keep me and my family always.
    Amen

  26. Verse 14-15 in the MSG reads….”So now: Fear God. Worship him in total commitment. Get rid of the gods your ancestors worshiped on the far side of The River (the Euphrates) and in Egypt. You, worship God. If you decide that it’s a bad thing to worship God, then choose a god you’d rather serve—and do it today. Choose one of the gods your ancestors worshiped from the country beyond The River, or one of the gods of the Amorites, on whose land you’re now living. As for me and my family, we’ll worship God.”

  27. This chapter starts with a review of past. It’s important to remember what God has pulled us out of. Sometimes when we are going through something it is easy to get caught up in what is happening right then. Remember the past and praise God for what you have come through!

Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord. And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. (Joshua 24:14, 15 KJV)

And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. (Joshua 24:15 KJV)
