Proverbs Chapter 19

Judges 1

1Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?

2And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

3And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.

4And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.

5And they found Adonibezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

6But Adonibezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

7And Adonibezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.

8Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.

9And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley.

10And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba:) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.

11And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjathsepher:

12And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.

13And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.

14And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou?

15And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.

16And the children of the Kenite, Moses’ father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.

17And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.

18Also Judah took Gaza with the coast thereof, and Askelon with the coast thereof, and Ekron with the coast thereof.

19And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

20And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak.

21And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.

22And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Bethel: and the LORD was with them.

23And the house of Joseph sent to descry Bethel. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.)

24And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy.

25And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.

26And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day.

27Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Bethshean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

28And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.

29Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

30Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.

31Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob:

32But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.

33Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Bethshemesh, nor the inhabitants of Bethanath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Bethshemesh and of Bethanath became tributaries unto them.

34And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley:

35But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries.

36And the coast of the Amorites was from the going up to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.

  1. COMPLETELY Drive Them ALL Out!!
    Jdg 1:27-36

Before ever entering the land of Canaan, God promises the Israelites that he would drive the Canaanites out of the land and give it wholly to them (Ex 24:11,24: Dt 4:38; Jos 3:10). These early verses of Judges however start off on the wrong foot with a disturbing report.
    vs 21 Benjaminites failed.
    vs 27 Manasseh failed.
    vs 29 Ephraim failed.
    vs 30 Zebulun failed.
    vs 31 Asher failed.
vs 33 Naphtali failed….seeing all the dominos trickle down the Ammorites puffed up and “confined the Danites to the hill country, not allowing them to come down from the plain” vs 34. In vs 35 “but when the power of the house of Joseph increased they too where pressed into forced labor.” ….Sound familiar? Sin wants you to be bound, confined, secluded, suffocated, not able to move, fight, oppose etc. God gave them that land!! God gave them a Promised Land. Stopping short of a complete conquest the Israelites allow to remain the very nations that the Lord has promised to drive COMPLETELY OUT. Oh, the Israelites force them into slave labor, but they continue to live in the land and continue to interact and influence them. You cannot be friends with the enemy, the enemy is here to steal, kill, and destroy you (Jhn 10:10)

Going their own wilfull way, the Israelites stop short of COMPLETE obedience. This is when they and we will pay the price. The wars and disturbances recorded in Judges begin, being fulfilling God’s warning that, unless they (and we) drive them (sin) out COMPLETELY, these nations will become “barbs in their eyes and thorns in their sides” (Nu 33:55). Never is anything less than complete obedience true obedience.

Its still not over, we can still clean up shop, and what we cannot do the Holy spirit can …The Lord didn’t build us to fall, he built us to get up.

Isa 40:31But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. KJV

Amos 5:14Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.
15Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph. KJV

    “Praise, Toes, and Nachos”

2And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

***Praise should always go first. At the Pentecostals of Fort Worth we pray in the prayer room, then we “SEND UP JUDAH” in praise and worship.

(Psalms 8:2 KJV) Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.(side note: this word avenger in the Hebrew is not “kinsman redeemer like the other word we studied)

Jesus quoted this verse and brought interpetation to it in the book of Matthew

(Matthew 21:16 KJV) And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?

***If we praise and worship the Lord, then we WILL receive the victory!!!
WE will cut the thumb off the enemy and will possess the land…

WHATS THE BEST PART OF HAVING A THUMB? Being able to eat nachos… when we praise the Lord and cut off the thumb of the enemy we are telling the enemy that “This Land is Nachos” (not yours). –jk, but it’s still true

When Judah goes forth in Pentecostal Revival my friend…watch your toes …some praiser of the Lord just might step on them…or better yet the preacher might step on them…just dont let the Word of the Lord’s sharp razor edge fall on them…Our praise should immobilize the enemy not ourselves.

  3. ask and you shall receive seek and you shall find achsah was given what she ask for and the tribes where given there promise and they failed to do what was comanded of them .how much more will GOD give his people that obey him GOD has called and promised fort worth to the POFWs the dry spell is over and now is the time for our blessings to flow if GOD says it it is so

  4. The Israelites did not obey, they did fully drive everyone out. We should be careful not to stop short or we will miss out on our blessing.

  5. 1Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?

2And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

3And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.

4And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.

When PRAISE goes first, VICTORY will always follow.

Praise will get you out of alot situations. Sometimes you will have to praise your way through your troubles and let the Lord take care of your problem. If we would allow praise to lead the way, victory won’t be far behind. We can get the victory over many things if we would just praise our way through. It will not always be easy, but there is nothing too hard for God. The more we praise the better we will feel because we know the Lord has already won the victory.

  6. 2And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

3And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.

Who went first Judah (Praise) and who went with Simeon (He has heard of my suffering). So Praise, Listen, & God will give you HIS VICTORY!!

  7. Judah- praise of the Lord; confession
    Simeon- that hears; that obeys

1 Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?
2 And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.
3 And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.

God had already established that the land was theirs, so when the children of Israel asked who to send first God said praise (Judah). Judah brought with him obedience (Someon) and together they defeated the canannites.

God has already promised us this city so we must keep praising and keep obeying.

    iPraise
    iObey

  8. THE LORD CHOSE PRAISE

1 Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?
2 And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

God has established HIS order and principal here in the beginning of the book of Judges. The specific question to the Lord was “Who goes FIRSTin the battle”? The LORD said Praise shall go first.

    1. Notice that Praise was to go UP. To lift or exalt, this principal is the result of established principal of Praise; Psalms 22:3 But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel. Which places God in an exalted position and place to judge in our lives.

    inhabitest -3427. yashab, yaw-shab´; properly, to sit down (specifically as judge. in ambush, in quiet); by implication, to dwell, to remain;

    2. Notice that Judah (Praise) goes FIRST! The FIRST thing that each of us should do in any and every situation is PRAISE the LORD first. Before we ask for direction, help or instruction, we should PRAISE. Before engaging in battle or conversation we should PRAISE.

    iPray
    iWork

  9. 3And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.

We need our brother. As did Judah and Simeon, we must bind together and overcome our enemy. Let us come together and take back what is ours.

  10. Praise is the key to victory!

I hear the sound of victory I know that things are gonna change for me I make the sound everywhere I go And I share the sound with everyone I know

And because of His blood( I overcome) I don’t have to fight ( it’s already won) And with every step I take it’s getting closer (closer)

And the louder it gets (the louder I praise)
The more intense (the more I praise)
And the harder it gets (the harder I praise)
My victory is on the way…and it’s in my praise

When I praise (when I praise)
    Hands upraised (when I praise)
Things start changing (when I praise)
    Rearranging (when I praise)
When I’m on the mountain ( I just praise)
Or even in my valley (I just praise)
Whatever comes my way ( I just praise)
I lift my hands and (just praise)

  11. 1:2 And the LORD said,Judah shall go up:behold I have deliverd the land into his hand.
—-God said it,so it’s gonna happend, but we should always remember what Romans 8:35,36,37,38 and 39 says.:
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?shall tribulation or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or peril or sword?as it is written for thy sake we are killed all day long;we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.nay in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
For I am persuaded, that. Eather death, nor life, nor angels nor principalities, nor powers nor things present nor things to come, nor height o depth nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of Christ.
—-So in the process,in the valley,on the mountain:
I will sen JUDAH in Jesus name….

    • Like I was saying yesterday on my way to church:in the morning,in the noontime even when the sun goes down he is worthy, worthy to be PRAISE…💒

  12. Tribe after tribe failed to drive the Canaanites from their land. Why didn’t they follow through and completely obey God’s commands?

    1) They were afraid the enemy was too strong (the iron chariots seemed invincible)
    2) They had been fighting for a long time and were tired. The goal was in sight but they lacked the discipline and energy to reach it.
    3) After Joshua’s death, power and authority were decentralized to the tribal leaders (tribes were no longer unified in purpose)
    4) Spiritual decay had infected them from within. (They thought they could handle the temptation and be more prosperous by doing business with the Canaanites)

We, too, often tolerate sin rather than drive it from our lives. We may know what to do but just don’t follow through. This will cause our relationship with God to gradually deteriorate. In our battles, we may grow tired and want rest, but we need more than a break from our work. We need to know that God loves us and has given us a purpose for life! Victory comes from living according to his purpose, willing to fully obey him.

  13. Now Moses and Joshua are dead. Their leaders have gone. Those left in charge are the heads of the tribes, the captains, and those appointed by Joshua.

Joshua served to be in the position he was in.
He waited at the feet of Moses, learned from him, and when Moses died he picked up where he left off. His heart was in it.

Now these tribes are to conquer their enemy and many fail.

God was still able, but they never put there heart in it. Caleb took what God promised him, because his heart was in it.

    The trial revealed the relationship.

  14. iBlog Lunch (no nachos please)

6But Adonibezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

WHAT WAS THE REAL REASON THE TOES AND THUMBS WERE CUT OFF?

***Maybe it was to signify that these kings were unclean…***

And he brought the other ram, the ram of consecration: and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the ram. And he slew it; and Moses took of the blood of it, and put it upon the tip of Aaron’s right ear, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot. (Leviticus 8:22, 23 KJV)

  15. 7And Adonibezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.

What struck me in this passage is that the King Adonibezek reaped what he sowed and he knew that God was repaying him for his actions too!

  16. Vs. 1-2, ” Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them? And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.”

The verses in Ephesian 5:19-20 came to my mind. “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your hearts to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Praise should always come out of our mouths first. Praise is how we are going to get the victory.

  17. Sisters and brothers in Christ has the power of God to help each other fight the devil just as Judah asked his brother to come with him and in return Judah went with his brother when the time came. in Christ they went and fought and they did overcome and the same still stands today. the troubles that we face, God gives us a sister or brother in Christ to help us or give advice but we should always pray and seek God before asking advice from others but nevertherless He will place someone in our life to call sister or brother. i know this because i have several sisters and brothers that i call on

  18. 1 Corinthians 15:33 be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.

Be careful who you hang around and let stay in your life. They will influence you!

  19. This chapter illustrates together. “And the LORD was with Judah”, what more could anyone want. The Lord is with his people and his church today, what more could anyone want. May the good Lord bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  20. v1″The chdren of Israel asked the LORD”
( they inquired of the LORD )
I’m thankful we can turn to JESUS when we are in trouble.
The devil has no power over JESUS NAME!

In Matt.4:3 breaking it down 🙂
If thou be the son of GOD
    Forget your divine mission
    Take care of the flesh
    Forget about the soul
    Make these stones bread

JESUS said,” We have to live by every word that proceedeth from the mouth of GOD.”
( the word proceedeth means to me that GOD is still speaking. Are we listening?
Modernism has accepted the stonesand the bread but not GOD’S WORD.

As we have been studying the book of Jude there are many books written to h-e-l-p
the Bible. The BIBLE iS COMPLETE !
    It doesn’t need any help.
The Bible tells us the way and points us
    to JESUS.
Just as we read in Jude v4
For there are certain men crept in unawares who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace. of our GOD into lasciviousness , and denying the only LORD GOD, and our LORD JESUS CHRIST. ( spirit of anti- Christ)

GOD speaks to our hearts and seeks for those who will hear and obey. HE desires to communicate with us because HE LOVES US SO MUCH!
Behold. I stand at the door and knock IF any man hears my voice, I WILL COME IN

  21. In this scripture, sure was a whole lot of fighting going on. God sent Judah/Praise up, you want to win the battle send up Judah. God has always been serious about his praise and worship. It moves him too, just like how does help us too;

    Psalm 9:2:3

2 I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High.
3 When mine enemies are turned back, they shall fall and perish at thy presence.

See how important praise is and the taking of toes and thumbs are away to slow down and permenantly disarm the enemy. Ever tried holding a weapon with no thumbs or run without your big toe. In fact as an Ex-Federal/State Correctons Officer. We had devices utilized to basically do the same thing. We had the black box, belly chain, THUMB CUFFS, LEG IRONS, regular handcuffs, and many other devices. What away to neutralize your enemy…don’t think we’ll see that kind of thing today.

  22. The children of Israell have been lead by three men so far…Moses meaning deliverer or to be drawn out, Joshua meaning salvation and Judah meaning praise. What a formula: the Lord delivers, saves, and I will praise!

  23. 1Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?

After the death of Joshua, as the death of Moses marked the end of Israel’s wilderness wandering, so the death of Joshua marked the end of the first phase of the conquest of Canaan. Who shall go up? Included in the allotments made by Joshua was much territory still unconquered. The tribes were expected to occupy the territories assigned to them.

  24. Judges 1

1Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?

Judges is a book of transition.

    The scripture states:
And it came to pass a long time after that the LORD had given rest unto Israel from all their enemies round about, that Joshua waxed old and stricken in age. -Joshua 23:1

But a high level view of this book (Judges)reveals that there are still battles for the saints of God to fight.

The children of Israel have gone from the wilderness to the promise land but still have to defend it.

Even though we have received the promise of salvation Jude states:

……..that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. -Jude 1:3

    Bro Ward

    • Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me.
GOD’S children are special they always had something to show them the way .

  25. Vs 3-4 If we will join together and “work”, the Lord will keep his word and give us the city for his Kingdom.

  26. 3And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.

There is power in unity. One can put a thousand to flight, two ten thousand. Oh to become unified with the same purpose…it’s happening @ POFW, and we are praising for the complete victory for our region over immorality, fear, carnality and non-commitment!

  27. Praise is were victory begins! No matter were we are at in our lives or what we are going thru praise preceeds the victory. Its time to get our praise on!

  28. 22And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Bethel: and the LORD was with them.

    What’s in your heart?

This scenario starts off with similarities to Rahab and her family being spared at Jericho, yet there’s a key component missing at the end. Rahab was absorbed among the children of Israel and came to live with them after Jericho fell. This other man, however, left Israel and went to one of their enemy nations and built a city named after the one he just left that Israel had conquered (that city being Luz, which Israel changed to Bethel, which means “house of God.”)

It’s clear that Luz was still in the man’s heart if he would go out of his way to throw aside mercy and “re-establish” the very thing that threatened his life because of his association with it. The fact that Israel initiated the offer of mercy in exchange for aid (rather than the other way around like with Rahab) suggests to me they may have had Rahab in mind when they came up with the idea of making such an offer. It doesn’t seem unreasonable to likewise conclude they may very well would have also accepted that man and his family into their people just as with Rahab. But whereas Rahab left Jericho behind, this man did not leave Luz behind.

It calls for self-examine; just because I came out of something one way doesn’t mean it’s out of my heart… what remnants might still remain in me that could be used to rebuild what was already seemingly conquered territory?

  29. Verse 2 in the MSG reads….”And God said, “Judah will go. I’ve given the land to him.” God had given the land to him; so, it was only natural or the next step would be to praise (Judah)!

In verses 14-15 in talks about Acsah again and her quest to get more or what she knew they needed. We should never settle; but, always strive to get more (souls, understanding, closer to God). In order to achieve these, we have to talk and ask our Creator, God Almighty.

  30. 6But Adonibezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

They cut off the thumbs and the large toes.

Thumbs give humans the ability to grab things and pick them up. When you have no thumbs you can’t grab and hold on. You can’t fasten things. You can’t clean yourself. You can’t do minor tasks that are simple like tie your shoes. God gave us thumbs to set us apart from animals and to be able to work for Him.

Big toes are made for balance. When you are missing your big toe it is easy to fall. You are not sure footed.
