Judges 6

1And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.

2And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds.

3And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them;

4And they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.

5For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it.

6And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD.

7And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD because of the Midianites,

8That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;

9And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drave them out from before you, and gave you their land;

10And I said unto you, I am the LORD your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice.

11And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

12And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.

13And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.

14And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?

15And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.

16And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.

17And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that thou talkest with me.

18Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.

19And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.

20And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.

21Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight.

22And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the LORD, Gideon said, Alas, O LORD God! for because I have seen an angel of the LORD face to face.

23And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.

24Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovahshalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

25And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Take thy father’s young bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it:

26And build an altar unto the LORD thy God upon the top of this rock, in the ordered place, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the grove which thou shalt cut down.

27Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared his father’s household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.

28And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was cast down, and the grove was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built.

29And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they enquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing.

30Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die: because he hath cast down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the grove that was by it.

31And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye plead for Baal? will ye save him? he that will plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him plead for himself, because one hath cast down his altar.

32Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal plead against him, because he hath thrown down his altar.

33Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and pitched in the valley of Jezreel.

34But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered after him.

35And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; who also was gathered after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

36And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said,

37Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said.

38And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water.

39And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.

40And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.

  1. Threshing in a Winepress
    Jdg 6:11

Its absurd. Why ever would Gideon thresh wheat in a wine press? A winepress is for threshing grapes, obviously.
Traditionally, wheat is threshed on a threshing floor, and often times threshing floors are located on hill tops, where the breeze can carry away the chaff, leaving only the fresh grain. But threshing on a hill top would have made Gideon a “sitting duck” for any passing Midianite looking for food or revenge. Instead Gideon threshes his grain in a wine press. a wine press is a large vat, often hewn out of solid stone, where grapes are pressed for their juices. It’s not an ideal place for threshing grain. But it’s an apt one, considering the recent activities of the Midianites. The first 6 verses explain why Gideon has stooped to this level he is doing what he can to survive, all the while God plans a rescue with Gideon as his champion. God doesn’t want any of his children to stoop to low places for survival and living. Becoming complacent with this current situation in time would explain for his unbelief in God springing him up for action “now”. He is also trying to spring us up for action now as well. Notice God didn’t come to Gideon while he was chilling at home, no, he came to him while he was at his lowest threshing wheat out of a wine press. God met Moses while he was in hiding as well. God met Paul while he was out persecuting saints. God loves turning those people who are at their lowest and on their way for a break through. We simply must respond and obey.

  2. The Source of True Courage
    Jdg 6:24

When God calls Gideon to lead the Israelites against their opressors, Gideon comes up with every excuse imagineable. **remind you of someone Ex 4:10** “Im the weakest. Im the smallest” (vs15). I’m not sure you’re really speaking to me.” (vs6:17). “I need a sign” (vs36-40). Yet the same Gideon is the “mighty warrior” (vs12) that we know as the one God used to defeat the Midianites. Where does this ordinary man gain the courage to accomplish this extaordinary task? The key is found in vs34: “Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon.” The language used here literally means the that Spirit “clothed himself with Gideon”. The might Spirit of God takes on a new clothing, that of the man Gideon, and accomplishes astounding things through him -things the mere human being could never have done on his own. If God can use a Gideon, God can use us too, and does. We just need to be like Gideon- not strong or brave or powerful, but simply willing. A vessel willing for the usage of God.

2 Cor 4:7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

Ro 9: 21Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? 22What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: 23And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory, 24Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?

  3. Because when I am weak,then I am strong…..
2.because the power of Midian was so oppressive, the Israelites prepared shelters for themselves in mountain clefts, caves and strongholds.
—- watch it! Fear will make us act on it….
6:6 Midian so impoverished the Israelites that they cried out to the Lord for help.
    — “strife” will make us strong or defeat us,good thing they cried out to God.
( the joy of the Lord is my strength )anyways…..
10.I said to you,”I am the Lord your God;do not words hip the gods of the Amorites in whose land you live. But you have not listened to me.
—this time God in his love, mercy and kindness sent them a prophet, to remind them(to refresh their memory) and tell them why these things are happening to them, and once again like most of the time gave them another chance.
    ——AND HERE WE GO ——-
6:11,12 The angel of the Lord came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing what in a wine press to keep it from the Middianites.
12.when the angle of the Lord appeared to Gideon,he said”The Lord is with you, mighty warrior”.
—— “wine press” hmm? Are we in that place right now? Are we being squeezed? Wonder….
—– Gideon didn’t conformed. With his circumstances, even though he knew the Midianites were gonna come and take, and destroy everything he was still working,he had to eat didn’t he?he was doing his responsability.
God called him “mighty warrior” not that he was one, actually to his eyes he was the opposite, but he had to be brave for what yet to come…..
14.The Lord turned to him and said,” Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand.Am I not sending you?
—-WHAT LOrd?what are you asking me to do? Really, me?
6.15 But Lord,Gideon asked, how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.
—– not a good report from Gideon,he still does not have a clue on what God has in plan for him and the rest of his life.
6.17 Gideon replied,”if I know I have found favor in your eyes, five me a sign that is really you talking to me.
—– Gideon:(to me he was) and unsecured young man, fearful, still not able to understand what’s going on,but “he never, ever said no to God.
22.when Gideon realized that it was the angel of the Lord,he exclaimed,”Ah,sovereign God!I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face.
—–he was afraid (I bet he was shaking and had Sweatty hands) nervous, but at the same time, exited, motivated, and because God saw his good heart ,he said this to him:
23.But the Lord said to him: Peace! Do not be afraid.you are going to die.
    —-so Gideon felt much better….
    DO IT AFRAID!!!
—In this chapter,I noticed that 4 times Gideon showed his fear, unsecurity, but he is obeying,he is not refusing to quit.
(I am almost done my friends ok?)
6:34,35,36 notice he recruded all these people,he wanted to make sure he had enough army, not knowing yet what God had in mind…one more time Gideon asked God for a sign,he needed to be confirmed, asure of God’s presence, protection.not that he didn’t believe God,but there was doubt, fear in him.he was just a besel, and that’s all God needs, someone he can use,he will do the rest….
—-God can do anything,God can make a way where there is no way.
—-God can turn my weakness into strengths.
I CAN NOT DO ANYTHING,BUT “sure”I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH CHRIST WHO GIVES ME STRENTH.

  4. In this scripture, it’s clear in the simplicity of man how we always seem to tempt our Lord with Signs & Wonders. We all have done it, but he is a merciful God. We do need to see miracles, signs, and wonders sometimes or manifestation of his promises/word.

17And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that thou talkest with me.

***But, Gideon not only used these signs as a means of confirmation, but it was used to bring clariety of the task at hand, and knew what to do for the Lord. You see it wasn’t for selfish gain, nor to make one self known, but to assure oneself of the mission God has given him, and to know he is doing the will of God. It was used, as a source of conversation to the point of completing a task, with confidence God was with him.***

****Then I shall know, “Confirmation”, that you are going to use me for a great work……One Big Bowl of Water…Awe Refreshing Confirmation…but it didn’t end there.***

***Wow Reverse the Process….HMMM…Now we are talking about a great man of God, who wanted to know clearly that he has heard from God…Angels, Signs, and Wonders….Wow…we will have to wait and see on the next chapter for the end results, of what happened, so stayed tuned for the conclusion.***

  5. Called to conquer not to adapt….

2 And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds.

They were so far away from God and so entangled in bondage that they didn’t know what to do. Gods chosen people hinding in mountains, caves, and strong holds. When they should have been hiding in Him, speaking to mountains that they may be cast down, and breaking every stronghold by the power of God.

Fear is evident throughout this chapter because the people lost their Faith. Lost sight of God and lost trust in God. What a horrible place to be.

Just as the Isreal we are called to conquer not to adapt and say everyone else is going through it, or they are more and stronger than we are. If God be for us who can he against us. Nothing and I mean nothing … not the economy, not sin, not trials. God is looking for warrior not babies.

  7. The people were mad, and shouted “kill him!” The town was in an uproar because of the blatant disrespect of their god. Their passions cried out for a solution. They needed to defend Baal?!

If this was their attitude toward the one true God, the grip of the midianites would loosen and they would be free.

If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: (Colossians 3:1-6 KJV)

  8. REVIVE THE ALTAR OF THE LORD

24 Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovahshalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

25 And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Take thy father’s young bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it:

Altars (places or forms of sacrifice) are built daily to idols in our day. People will sacrifice time, talent and treasure to events, people, and things other than the Lord our GOD.

We need a revival of the ALTAR of the LORD. Let our first offering of sacrifice be unto the LORD and HIS KIngdom.

  9. Vs 1 Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord again. God had allowed them to be delivered into the hand of Midian for 7yrs. Disobedience always comes with a price, but no matter how many times Israel or even.us today get ourselves into a mess God is always waiting to help us if we will just cry out to Him.

  10. v24 Then Gideon built an alter there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovah -shalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

Refuse to focus on circumstances and stand firm in discouraging situations.
Remember we are not alone JESUS will meet us at the altar. As we respond with faith
    and commitment to HIM.
    Look up to JESUS
I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth
He will not suffer thu foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber
Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.
The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. Ps.121:1-5

  11. NLT 39 Then Gideon said to God, “Please don’t be angry with me, but let me make one more request. Let me use the fleece for one more test. This time let the fleece remain dry while the ground around it is wet with dew.”

We are always asking for requests from God. By nature, we ask for proof to believe. Having a relationship with God, we can see what God has done for us. We recognize the blessings & miracles God does for us on a daily basis. By faith, we know God will grant our requests!

    “Who’s Encamped Around YOU”

Look at these contrasting portions of scriptures

    ****FOR THE BLESSED FOLKS****

(Psalms 34:7) The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.

(Psalms 34:8) O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

(Psalms 34:9) O fear the LORD, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him.

You have SOMEONE ENCAMPED AROUND YOU RIGHT NOW…

    Who has encamped around you???

    I declare the VICTORY

  13. 1 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.

2 And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds.

Our own choices may get us to a place were we have to make dens, caves-dark place and have strong holds in our lives but the moment we cry out for help the begins his plan to save us. It’s not Gods plan for us to be hidden somewhere in fear. But we were made to be courageous and hide under the shadow of the Almighty.

    Psalms 91:1-4
1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

  14. Unexpected Appointment

11 And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

There’s a encounter with the Lord that can be presented to us while we iwork.

    Gal. 6:8-10
8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

  15. 37Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said.
38And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water.

There is always a test befir ethe blessing.

  16. v34 But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered after him.

We must let others know where we stand, and testify about the Holy Ghost
Would to GOD HIS Spirit would blow through this house and baptize us all of us with the Holy Ghost.

And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
v4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:2,4

  17. v14 And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?
Wow thats so awesome ” And the LORD looked upon him””
One look of the LORD and it will dispel fears,
doubts, and discouragements. Keep your eyes on JESUS. HE will fight your battles!
    Praise GOD!!!

  18. 6And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD.

7And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD because of the Midianites

Without the Lord’s mercy and love the children of Israel would have been destroyed and wiped out from off their promised land. We too have his great mercy and love to see through to the promised land.

  19. This chapter illustrates authority. “And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.” The one that is least of all can be the greatest through obedience to God. One must never forget God does not need us however we need him, thank God for his love, mercy and Blood. May the good Lord bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  20. v1 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the hand of the Midian seven years.
v2 And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel : and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves and strong holds.

    Midian means strife
    War divides
    Devil means tear apart
IN JESUS IS PEACE AND COMFORT

    Wow! Disobedience always brings pain.
Seven years of pain for the children of Israel before they looked up and cried out for help.

The devil hates GOD’S Church and would like to tear it apart. By using strife and division against each other and to bring GOD’S work to nought.
Don’t let disobedience to the LORD enslave you and cause you to isolate yourself in dens, caves and strong holds of selfish attitudes
by having your way and forgetting GOD’S Way.

    GOD LOVES UNITY
    Thank GOD for the Victory!!!

  21. Just like God sent His angles then He is still doing it. When we need God,He is always there for us. Some of the choices we make puts us in a place that we dont want to be but because our Lord loves us He hears our crys and pull us out of the fire. God is still working miricles today, while reading this chapter we see that God is a God of many chances even though we are hardheaded at times,God already knows where we are in our life and He knows when we will obey Him and when we are not. Thank God for Hid Grace and Mercy. Where would I be without either? I dont want to even picture that

  22. 20And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.

Sacrifice is required of each us, we must die out to our flesh and live a life that is not filled with sin.

Removing altars out of our lives that are not built to the Lord and sacrificing at the altar of the one true and living God will bring us to a place of great revival.

………….and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. -Matthew 16:18

  23. God once again has someone fighting for his people. Even though their sin got them into this situation, God is still looking out for his chosen people. Only a true God would do this for his people.

THE ENEMY HAD STOLEN THE WORD OF GOD AND THE PEOPLE WORSHIPED OTHER gods INSTEAD OF THE ONE TRUE GOD.

(Hebrews 11:1) Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

(Hebrews 11:2) For by it the elders obtained a good report.
(Hebrews 11:32) And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:

(Romans 10:17) So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

GIDEON RECEIVED FAITH AS THE ANGEL SPOKE AND USED THAT FAITH TO DELIVER ISRAEL.

  25. 2And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds.

During times of great trouble, the cave-dwelling mentality can seem practical, sensible, even understandable, excusable… but I am reminded of God’s words to David:

David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father’s house heard it, they went down thither to him. … And the prophet Gad said unto David, Abide not in the hold; depart, and get thee into the land of Judah. Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hareth. (1 Samuel 22:1, 5 KJV)

God did not desire for David to abide in the cave, instead He told him to get up and out and go to the land of Praise. The cave can seem like a good place in our time of trouble but it is a place of hiding and fear. Much like what Bro Herring spoke at warfare prayer, anxiety and depression can lead to a cave mentality like we see also in Gideon in the beginning. On the run, doubtful, looking just to try to scrape by somehow, expecting the worse, afraid of the enemy, afraid of kinsmen, stuck in a world that feels shrunken and constricting like a cave because there seems to be nothing good on the horizon of Tomorrow. But God calls us to more, just as He spoke to Gideon, “have not I sent thee?” We are sent, not called to bury ourselves in the living grave of a cave. We must have faith and believe…

  26. 11And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

12And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.

God always has a man prepared to lead his people. We must be willing to follow, even when it looks we are the minority, God is always up to somehting.

  27. 12And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.

The message of the angel of the Lord seemed to be a mockery, for Gideon felt powerless to meet the need of his people.
In this scripture it has the word valour I did a word search on it and it means courage and or bravery. I found that in the Webster’s Basic Dictionary/.

  28. This chapter talks about how Gideon kept asking for reassurances/signs from God. This reminds me of how we sometimes ask God “Use me Lord” and then we question when opportunities open up to us or when God tells us to do something. We need to trust in the Lord and take every opportunity that is given to us to share Jesus!

  29. VS 36-40
This is the Lord making his word evident. That is my prayer everyday that the Lord would make his direction in my life evident and clear, easy to see the thing I should to do.
