Judges 8

1And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? And they did chide with him sharply.

2And he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?

3God hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.

4And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them.

5And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.

6And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?

7And Gideon said, Therefore when the LORD hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.

8And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him.

9And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.

10Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.

11And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host; for the host was secure.

12And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued after them, and took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host.

13And Gideon the son of Joash returned from battle before the sun was up,

14And caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and enquired of him: and he described unto him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, even threescore and seventeen men.

15And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye did upbraid me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary?

16And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.

17And he beat down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.

18Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.

19And he said, They were my brethren, even the sons of my mother: as the LORD liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you.

20And he said unto Jether his firstborn, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth.

21Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels’ necks.

22Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian.

23And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you.

24And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)

25And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey.

26And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels’ necks.

27And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.

28Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.

29And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.

30And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives.

31And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, whose name he called Abimelech.

32And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

33And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baalberith their god.

34And the children of Israel remembered not the LORD their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:

35Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.

  1. and they turned away from God again. They took the the gold and turned away God help me to find my riches in heaven instead of looking at the world I never want it to be said about me that I remembered the Lord not.

  2. iEat The Word for Breakfast (because fasting from the Word is too hard)

    Humble thyself

(Judges 8:1) And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? And they did chide with him sharply.

(Judges 8:2) And he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?

(Judges 8:3) God hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.

(Proverbs 16:18) Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

(Proverbs 16:19) Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.

(Proverbs 16:20) He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy is he.

why is there fighting and contentions in the church right after a big victory

(Proverbs 13:10) Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.

    ONLY BY PRIDE

    LETS HUMBLE OURSELVES

  3. vs 33-35 The love of God was not in their hearts. As soon as another leader was dead they immediately turned back to the world. We need to follow God not becasue of someone else, but because of our own love for God and his Word. We nned to get it for ourselves.

  4. 16And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.

Gideon asked for bread to sustain his men while he pursued after the two kings. Yet the elders of the city refused to offer this small help.

Gideon returned victorious and “taught” the elders with thorns and briars.

If we simply follow the word of God and obey him in the little things, we can avoid the briars and the thorns.

    Hosea 10:12
Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.

Matthew 13: 22He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. 23But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

The thorns of this world are teach hard lessons we can learn easily if we simply obey the word.

  5. dont tell me you dont needs church or a preacher to make it to heaven ive heared it said (i can make it on my own ) know you cant. you need the man of GOD in your life for direction and to guide use because whitout the covering of the man of GOD the people turned there backs on him once again let use learn from our mistakes and see past whats in front of use

  6. A LIVING TESTIMONY

18 Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.

This verse represents the testimony of the LORD to all people. When Gideon asked for a description of the people they killed. The description was very clear and simple. (MSG) 18 He then addressed Zebah and Zalmunna: “Tell me about the men you killed at Tabor.” “They were men much like you,” they said, “each one like a king’s son.”

Christian believers, followers of Jesus, Holy Spirit filled/led born again disciples should possess the same testimony. “A Kings SON”

    1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;

JESUS is KING of KINGS therefore we are “A Kings SON” once we are “Born Again” of the water and the Spirit.

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

    iBlessed

  7. Forgetfulness, it has been a personal struggle and horn in my side. My true intentions are noble; however, the results of my efforts show poorly. I had a conversation with Pastor yesterday about my participation on the blog. I have meeting agendas set to remind me it is time to blog; same thing as with Gideon in verse 27 is always “snaring” my time away. Pastor then reminded me to make the blog FIRST. The tithe of my day to God, so, here I am.

In verses 33 and 34 the children of Israel remembered not the Lord their God. This is different than in Judges 2:10. …”there arose a generation, after them, which knew not the Lord …” I cannot allow the distractions of life to pull my attention away from my God. He must become my priority. While I truly thought the Lord was my priority my absence on the blog proves otherwise.

So I say to this world and all its distractions:
    2 Corinthians 6:2
(For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)

  8. THE LORD RULES

23 And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you.

With proper perspective the LORD rules over us and never man. When we see a man of God give a word from GOD we see the testimony of GOD. Pride will cause that man to credit and rule from his own will and desire. However if he speaks the WORD of GOD and obedience follows then we have “THE LORD RULES”.

I personally do not want to rule over people; I desire the LORD to rule over people. HIS way is perfect, HIS strength is perfect.

    iPray
    iWork

  9. 23 And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you.

Gideon knew his place in God’s plan, he knew that there was no other ruler but the Lord. He makes his position clear to the people. Some people look to their spiritual leaders as gods and they don’t realize that they are humans full of faults and mistakes.

33And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baalberith their god.

This people that follow their leaders blindly without seeking God first are the ones that in the moment that their leaders fall, they will fall with them. Leaders must be wise to keep themselves humble, to see themselves as just another instrument of God, and not mislead His people. We are blessed to have a Pastor that encourage us to read the bible, to seek answers from God, and above all to be humble by his example and leadership.

  10. The Lord used Gideon to deliever the Israelites. There was quietness in the country for 40yrs in the days of Gideon. But as soon as Gideon died Israel turned away from God and went back to there old ways. No matter who our leader is we should always serve the Lord with all our heart. Joshua 24:15 …..but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

  11. we are going to face diffcult times in our walk with God how we handle it will determine if we will go thru that trail again.
This is why we need a man of God in our lives not to rule but give us direction and guidiance.

  12. 15And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye did upbraid me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary?
16And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.
17And he beat down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.

They missed their opportunity of a blessing.

Gen. 12:2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

  13. iEat The Word for Lunch

    “maybe not perfect, but used”

Gideon had issues…He had MANY wives… How many wives does a dude need? 70 children??? Can you imagine all those pampers???

So he feared the enemy, but i guess he didn’t fear child support. He had issues…

BUT GOD USED HIM…just as God uses us…

Just because God uses us doesn’t mean He approves everything we do. Thank God for an awesome pastor who will tell us what we need to change.

Let’s humble ourselves and be obedient to the man of God.

  14. v33 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and
    made Baalberith their god.

We serve a Loving and Patient Forgiving
    GOD.HIS MERCY ENDURETH for ever.
Unbroken habits of sin though forgiven
    will cost painful consequences.
GOD does not look favorably upon the smearing of HIS Glory and HIS NAME.
Disobedience to GOD always brings pain
Not only to yourself but also to those who love you including GOD that loves you most of all.

  15. v34 And the children of Israel remembered not the LORD their GOD, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side

This reminds me of what our Evangelist was talking about on Sunday morning.About the two evils.
First those who don’t believe disobey
    And Heb.3:18-19 says
And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believe not?
So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
As we also see in the book of Jude v5
How the LORD destroyed them that believed not

It’s such a sad fact. We cannot undo sinful deeds nor sinful words.
LORD…” Keep me from deliberate wrongs; help me to stop doing them. Only then can I be free of guilt and innocent of some great crime.” TLB Ps.19:13

2). Then they remembered not the LORD their GOD .
    That’s evil ..
Jer.2:13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that cannot hold no water.
Like it was said, Sunday we need to i want to drink from HIS fountain of living waters everyday and be obedient and not forget the LORD.
Let HIS Waters Flow and refresh a multitude
and ourselves with no aftertaste of regrets.

The children of Israel were not only disobedient but

  16. Why is it that people always want to put their trust and confidence in man and look to them for the answers to their needs, when the only real answer is JESUS?

What was wrong with the children of Israel and people today is their lack of relationship with God.

i CHOOSE to let God be the Ruler over my life. My trust and confidence is in Him. He is the Author and Finisher of our Faith.

  17. A house divided cannot stand. Here the tribes of Israel are fighting the enemy and also fighting within themselves. Had they been in agreement they may not have lost 120,000 men.{Verse 10} Gideon tried to restore sanity but when he made an ephod out of the gold he gathered they began to worship it as a false idol. What Gideon met for good became twisted in the following years.

  18. 7. And Gideon said, Therefore when the LORD hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.

    A. He did not say “if”, but “when the LORD hath delivered”…he had absolute faith that God would give him victory not only over Zebah and Zalmunna, but also over the men of Succoth.

    B. He didn’t let his anger detour him from completing his mission. He waited until after he finished what he had started, then came back to “teach” them…with thorns and briers!

  19. 23And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you.
Allow God to be the ruler in your life. He is the only way.

  20. This chapter illustrates remembrance. “And the children of Israel remembered not the LORD their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side”. One should never condemn, God forbid we forget and become disobedient like the children of Israel did, we must pray (ipray) for one another and lift up one another (iwork). May the good Lord bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  21. And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them. -Judges 8:4

The river Jordan is a place of many significant events and miracles.

The people of God crossed over Jordan to take Jericho and the land promised by God.

Elijah and Elisha experience the supernatural power of God at the Jordan.

Gideon and his men crossed over the Jordan but were faint from the pursuit of the victory promised by the Lord. As we pursue the victory promised by the Lord we will be victorious if we stay in the fight.

  22. NLT 6 But the officials of Succoth replied, “Catch Zebah and Zalmunna first, and then we will feed your army.”

This is such a typical response by most, these days. People always want something first before giving. The Succoths and Peniels believed, there was no way Gideon would catch Zebah or Zalmunna. They did not have the spirirt of giving.

But Gideon had the confidence to speak his mind of victory! It was just a matter of time of catching the kings. This is the confidence, we as Christians should express to the unrighteous. Let us speak with confidence, about Jesus. Even during times of trials, speak faith and confidence about God’s power.

  23. And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? And they did chide with him sharply.

4 times I have tried to comment and every time it has gotten deleted. Now I will simplify it Epgraim was upset because they did not get the oppurtunity to beat on the devil. I believe when they ask a Christian what do you like to do, our answer should be defeating the enemy.
WHEN YOU GO TO WAR CALL ME I ENJOY BEATING ON THE DEVIL

  24. In this scripture, it is apparent that once again they turned from God, to worship a false God. You know love is patient, and love is kind, God is Love, but how long or how many times does he have to put up with this type of ignorance. You know be cautious of those things that could be a snare onto your house as well. Wars, contentions, greed, many wives, and many children, sounds like a lot of drama. Just think, we get upset when there’s long lines in the checkout counter, or when we are stuck in traffic. Imagine if we didn’t have the all these modern convienances today.

    “Be Church”….ishare…..Mark A. Ridenour……

  25. 4And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them.

Faint, yet pursuing…never give up even when faint. The Lord is our strength. We can make it!

  26. 23And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you.

We are not ruled by man but by God. If the people would have really understood this they would have stayed in the ways of Gideon even after his death.

Our pastor stands as our spiritual authority and answers to God for us, but God “rules” over us. Pastor has a great responsaiblity in our lives to lead and teach us the ways of God; that even when we are not in his presence we uphold what the Word of God says. It’s a pastors dream to see the flock walking in righteousness even when He has gone to be with the Lord.

  27. How soon we forget what God has done for us. God continued to show Israel kindness, but they continued to sin and serve other God’s. We must remember what God has done for us in our lives and not quickly forget where he brought us from. If we always put God first, God will always have a blessing waiting for us.

  28. v27 And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.

Gideon A man of valour . The LORD our GOD is with you.destroy the idols in your land before we can condem other people.
Let’s make sure we have the idols out of our hearts first.
Our GOD is JESUS and HIM shall you worship only.
The devil hates a shouting and shining church.
Gideon went back to Ophrah and they worshipped the ephod back to idolatry after the victory.
Anything that separates you from the worship of GOD is an idol.
    iWorship JESUS!

  29. v23 And Gideon said unto them I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you, the LORD shall rule over you .

Gideon did not accept the glory after GOD used his life. Not only did the Israelites experience peace but also prosperity.
To GOD Be ALL The Glory!

  30. Gideon’s Ephod
    Jdg 8:22-27

After the Midianite war, the people give a share of their plunder to Gideon; one gold earring each. Gideon takes the gold and forms it into an ephod, an article of clothing connected with worshiping God (Ex 28:6). Unfortunately Gideon’s ephod has no such high purpose. Soon after he makes it, the Israelites begin worshiping it. Sometime they contributed to, and Gideon literally made with his own hands. So quickly they forget their miraculous deliverance from the Midianites, so quickly they turn from God to go their own way- a story repeated time after time througout Judges and throughout the history of humanity, and the church as well. God forgives, God delivers. We’re thankful and close to him for a time, but when we soon forget and go our own way -a cycle that God will continue to work to break.

  31. My Mother’s Sons
    Jdg 8:19

Notice how Gideon identifies these dead men as his brothers: “they are my brothers, the sons of my own mother” Emphasis added) These are the days of multiple wives for one husband, so these specific brothers need to be distingushed from other brothers who have the same father but a different mother.
When God instituted marriage in the Garden of Eden, his plan was for one man to marry one woman (Gen 2:24). However, early on even the patriarchs had more than one wife, seemingly without disapproval from God. Gideon’s father has several wives, and Gideon himself has “many wives” (Jdg 8:30).
The teachings of Jesus (Mt 19:4-6; Mk 10:11-12) underscore the benefits and beauty of the marriage of one man and one woman, for life. Paul urges Timothy and Titus to choose leaders who have only “one wife” (1Ti 3:2,12; Titus 1:6), supporting God’s 1st and best choice for marriage.

  32. once again we see the people of god forgetting were he brought them from. how soon we forget the goodness of God. it is important to remember were God brought us from. if we can remember the past it will lead us to are spiritial future…

  33. V9 “And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.”

This reminds me of what God said about another tower:

“Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?” (Luke 13:4 KJV)

    It is also reminiscent of:

“Speak not thou in thine heart, after that the Lord thy God hath cast them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness the Lord hath brought me in to possess this land: but for the wickedness of these nations the Lord doth drive them out from before thee.” (Deuteronomy 9:4 KJV)

It can be easy to read scripture and point out “good guys” and “bad guys” but honestly, in our humanity, none of us are perfect, we all make mistakes. Even with Giddeon and his great turn around from fearful to mighty man of valor, the ephod (a thing usually connected with praising God) that he made from the spoils of victory became a snare to him and his house. We can’t let the fruits of past victories become a snare to us, and we cannot look at the spiritual momentum in our lives and assume it means we are immune to making mistakes.

“But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” (Isaiah 64:6 KJV)

We must humbly come before God daily and allow a full exam of who we are, what we’re doing, what’s in our life, and if all that is pleasing God. Yesterday’s victory will be a snare if we let if become an idol that we exalt above our pursuit of God *today.* We cannot let it blind us to truth of our spiritual conditon *today,* right here, right *now.* The devil fell like lightning, we must realize how quickly we can fall as well and take heed to not deceive ourselves about the frailty of our humanity and the reality of sin.

“Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world” (Philippians 2:12-15 KJV)

  34. In this chapter once again, the People of Israel soon forget about God after their guidance was gone (dead). It is so important to have a Pastor, not because he rules; but, because God has placed him in your life to help you. The Lord is our ruler as Gideon said in verse 23 in the CEV…..” No,” Gideon replied, ” I won’t be your king, and my son won’t be king either. Only the LORD is your ruler.”

  35. 24And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey.

Gideon’s request was granted. He asked for the earrings of his prey, and he was given them. However, then they become a snare to him and his entire household.

Many times this happens in our lives. We pray and ask God for something that would be a blesing to us and then when we get it, we use it as an excuse to not do for God what we had done previously before we received the blessing. Lord help us to not turn blessings into cursings in our lives.

  36. The Ephraimites were angered that Gideon had not enlisted their aid ear;ier in the battle with the Midianites. Since the victor divided the spoil. they suspected Gideon of trying to deprive them of the spoilsof war.

  37. Gideon had faith that his army would come out victorious and proved his doubters wrong – as we should also have the same faith in God. However, his pride soon got the better of him and he fell into a trap – we musn’t forget the victories God brings us or take adavantage of them.

  38. What a great leader to have brought the children of Israel so far and not desire the title that he could have taken, the title that was offered him. That raises the challenge in my mind of the reasons for living for God. I live for God for his glory. I pray that I stay like Gideon and not desire a title. Titles only make you less than what God has called you to. Less is More. Gideon new God, that is how he trusted God to rule instead of himself. When we truly know God we have no problem letting go of titles or positions. let God be God.
