Judges 9

1And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother’s brethren, and communed with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying,

2Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.

3And his mother’s brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.

4And they gave him threescore and ten pieces of silver out of the house of Baalberith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light persons, which followed him.

5And he went unto his father’s house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.

6And all the men of Shechem gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and went, and made Abimelech king, by the plain of the pillar that was in Shechem.

7And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.

8The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive tree, Reign thou over us.

9But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?

10And the trees said to the fig tree, Come thou, and reign over us.

11But the fig tree said unto them, Should I forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees?

12Then said the trees unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us.

13And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?

14Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us.

15And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow: and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.

16Now therefore, if ye have done truly and sincerely, in that ye have made Abimelech king, and if ye have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done unto him according to the deserving of his hands;

17(For my father fought for you, and adventured his life far, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:

18And ye are risen up against my father’s house this day, and have slain his sons, threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maidservant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother;)

19If ye then have dealt truly and sincerely with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:

20But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.

21And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.

22When Abimelech had reigned three years over Israel,

23Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:

24That the cruelty done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, which slew them; and upon the men of Shechem, which aided him in the killing of his brethren.

25And the men of Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains, and they robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech.

26And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren, and went over to Shechem: and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him.

27And they went out into the fields, and gathered their vineyards, and trode the grapes, and made merry, and went into the house of their god, and did eat and drink, and cursed Abimelech.

28And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: for why should we serve him?

29And would to God this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.

30And when Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled.

31And he sent messengers unto Abimelech privily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren be come to Shechem; and, behold, they fortify the city against thee.

32Now therefore up by night, thou and the people that is with thee, and lie in wait in the field:

33And it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, thou shalt rise early, and set upon the city: and, behold, when he and the people that is with him come out against thee, then mayest thou do to them as thou shalt find occasion.

34And Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.

35And Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and Abimelech rose up, and the people that were with him, from lying in wait.

36And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the top of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.

37And Gaal spake again, and said, See there come people down by the middle of the land, and another company come along by the plain of Meonenim.

38Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth, wherewith thou saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out, I pray now, and fight with them.

39And Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.

40And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and many were overthrown and wounded, even unto the entering of the gate.

41And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah: and Zebul thrust out Gaal and his brethren, that they should not dwell in Shechem.

42And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.

43And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field, and looked, and, behold, the people were come forth out of the city; and he rose up against them, and smote them.

44And Abimelech, and the company that was with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and the two other companies ran upon all the people that were in the fields, and slew them.

45And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and slew the people that was therein, and beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.

46And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard that, they entered into an hold of the house of the god Berith.

47And it was told Abimelech, that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.

48And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it, and laid it on his shoulder, and said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done.

49And all the people likewise cut down every man his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them to the hold, and set the hold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.

50Then went Abimelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it.

51But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut it to them, and gat them up to the top of the tower.

52And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and went hard unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire.

53And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech’s head, and all to brake his skull.

54Then he called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A women slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.

55And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man unto his place.

56Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren:

57And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.

  1. v56 Thus GOD rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren :
v57 And all the evil of the men of Shechem did GOD render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubaal.

Be not deceived ; for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also real. Gal.6:7

If we live to please ourselves it shows on the way we behave.
If we live to please GOD we are drinking from HIS fountain of living waters everyday . Controlled by HIS Spirt, and we can call HIM LORD,worship, adore, and lift HIM Up as LORD!

    Jerubbaal.
    H3378
    ירבּעל
    yerûbba‛al
    yer-oob-bah’-al
From H7378 and H1168; Baal will contend; Jerubbaal, a symbolical name of Gideon: – Jerubbaal.

Jerubbaal was the name given to Gideon when he destoyed his fathers grove…

(Judges 9:1) And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother’s brethren, and communed with them…

Abimelech is the son of Gideon…one of the 70 we talked about yesterday. His name means:

    H40
    אבימלך
    ‘ăbı̂ymelek
    ab-ee-mel’-ek
From H1 and H4428; father of (the) king; Abimelek

Think about that…Gideon named his son “Father of the King.” What does that imply? Maybe that pride entered and even though Gideon refused to be king….Refused all his sons to be king….But MAYBE it was ok for his grandson to become KING…”Father of the KING.”

(Judges 8:23) And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you.

THE PEOPLE WERE LOOKING FOR A KING…BY GIDEON NAMING HIS SON “FATHER OF THE KING”, GIDEON SET HIMSELF UP FOR THE LITTLE ISSUES OF LIFE TO ONE DAY DESTOY HIM.

  3. 4. And they gave him threescore and ten pieces of silver out of the house of Baalberith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light persons, which followed him.

    5. And he went unto his father’s house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.

A piece of silver for each of his brothers slain…what a disgrace!! And what did it get him? A rock on his head and a sword through his chest. He ended all his brother’s lives on one stone, and one stone ended his life.

    Romans 12:19
Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

  4. v23 Then GOD sent an evil spirit between Alimelech and the men of Shechem ; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech :

Controlled by another power another force would not let him call him LORD.
Instead an evil spirit followed him.
“The wages of sin is death” Rom.6:23
and left Abimelech in humiliation fatally wounded at the hands of a woman.

Thank you JESUS for your Holy Spirit
    Leads and guides us.
Pro.27:12. A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself ; but the simple pass on, and are punished.

  5. No wonder Jesus calls us sheep. The people followed after Abimelech as long as he liveth, doing his every bidding. But once he is dead they do not know what to do. Their sins came back upon them for punishment. If we follow the truth then there will be nothing that we have to get recompense for. In following Jesus he will never leave us or forsake us.

  6. know your role dont step out of your calling if you do GOD has a way of putting a mill stone up side your head . if you stay within your calling you stay within your covering

  7. In this scripture, you can see that God is a God of Justice. What is troubling to me is how he sends an Evil Spirit to punish. But, he is just and there is a price to be paid. What’s awesome is when accepting Christ Jesus, it’s paid for in full. So, Love One Another!

Sounds to me, these people needed the Prince of Peace…….

  8. Be careful little hands what you do…
18And ye are risen up against my father’s house this day, and have slain his sons, threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maidservant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother;)

Be careful little heart whom you trust..
19If ye then have dealt truly and sincerely with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:

The Father up Above is looking down and up..
23Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:

Be careful little hands what you do..
24That the cruelty done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, which slew them; and upon the men of Shechem, which aided him in the killing of his brethren.

Be careful little mouth what you say..
28And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: for why should we serve him?
38Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth, wherewith thou saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out, I pray now, and fight with them.
Oh, be careful little mouth what you say…

Be careful little feet where you go..
34And Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.
52And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and went hard unto the door of the tower to burn it with “fire”.

For the Father up above is looking down and up ..
53And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech’s head, and all to brake his skull.
56Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren:
57And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.

So be careful to whom you serve. What you say, think, go, do, see, and hear. In everyway we should be submissive to God and his pressence caring for us. Their is a lesson in every other verse to learn from this story.
Keep up your gaurd, where the Lords armour.

  9. 23Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:

We as leaders need to get behind the man of God and stay under his covering. The devil is out to kill and destroy and if we give just a thought of evil againist someone gives the enemy a thought to play with. Let’s get under the covering where we belong.

For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. (Hebrews 6:10 KJV)

  10. EVIDENCE OF A PROUD SPIRIT

28 And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: for why should we serve him?

    Why should we/I serve him?

We read about the trees in verses 8 thru 16 and how only the bramble – the thorns and weeds, the castoff would have even consider to caver them. This is how people too often operate; willing to accept the lowest level of covering.

Notice Gaal said “who is Abimelech” Abimelech = “Melek is father” or “my father is king” – he is the son of a King.

Gaal said serve the men of Hamor – Hamor = “he-ass” – wild and untamed.

A proud spirit will cause you to follow the King.

    iPray

  11. When we live our own way and do wrong to Gods people we will have to answer for what we did. Maybe not right away and maybe we ourselves won’t answer to God for it but our children or grandchildren might. Our decsions affect more than just us.

  12. Vs 23Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:
24 That the cruelty done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, which slew them; and upon the men of Shechem, which aided him in the killing of his brethren.

The Lord will always make those who do wrong reap from their actions and words.

19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

  13. The Lord will always revenge the blood of the innocent. We must be very careful for our actions or words may hurt and injured a heart that is searching for God. The actions we take today will determine what we reap in the future. In this case even the generations to come were curse because of Abimelech actions.

Rom 12:19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.

21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

  14. This chapter shows me how important it is to sow God into every aspect of my life. We have to be careful what you wish for or state, because you just might get it all and then some. Also, be careful who you surround yourself with and what you believe. They (whoever you surround yourself with) knowingly might distract you and say “oh that’s not so bad” or “that’s not going to hurt anything”, when in reality it’s the enemy coming straight at you. Stay focused on Jesus and he will fight your battles.

  15. 2 Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh. 3And his mother’s brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.

It just took one man spreading an idea around the city to bring division and death. Becareful what you hear even if it is from a “brother”. It was one mans voice that divided a people against their leadership and began the snowball effect of death from his brothers to himself.

  16. Being a follower is not always a bad thing that is if you are flollowing God. He also gives us leaders that obeys the word by eating it every day. I thank God for His love

  17. This tells me to know who your friends are, who you follow and who influences you. Friends can easily lead you astray from God. Always keep your eye on Jesus, he is our leader whom we follow!

  18. 56Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren:

57And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.

Vegenance does belong to the Lord. We may think we are “getting by” with things but God sees all and knows all and reckoning day will come.
Lord help us to please you with our actions and follow your commands.

  19. 53And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech’s head, and all to brake his skull.
54Then he called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A women slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.

He died with honor by dishonor.

    The Physical Side-
As a military enthusiast I dont understand what Abimelech was thinking. Is it better to lie about how one died, than to say that a woman killed you? As it was back in this time period, it was a disgrace for a man to be treated by a woman like this. Therefore he would have rather told a lie about the true nature of his death, than to die truthfully with dishonor.

    The Spiritual Side-
In our walk with God we are invincible, in case we are not because we have one thing Flesh. And if we think that we are as such, we must take another look. We all have come short of the Glory of God and, yet He loves us all. Is it better to lie and say ,” I’m fine. I’m invincible.” Than to say,”Help! I have fallen and need help up. Someone, please Help!” I now understand the burden of our Pastor. God has allowed me to hear and see a small part of the cries of our city. I have the opprotunity to see literally hundreds if not thousands of people everyday that are hurting and don’t know where or what to do. I have been asked by people ,” Why don’t you find another job? One that will support you?” And as I do understand their point of view, I to have a question. Why would I ? Not financially, but spiritually. I have an opprotunity to impact lives everyday. More that most people. So said all that to say, would I rather die with HONOR knowing that I have impacted lives by showing JESUS in a work place that doesn’t allow talk of that nature and get kicked out for telling the truth. Or die with Dishonor knowing that I did have that chance and I didn’t do it for the fear that I might get fired. Now you answer the question!

  20. 80 possibilities to serve the Lord, and bless the nation. Yet one wicked son killed all his brothers. Soon the people were at war, and three years go by to allow Abimilech to turn to God.

He thought he would get away with it but God gave him his reward.

  21. There has neverbeen a shortage of violence and deceit in the world in the the Bible and todays history.Abimelech died the way he lived, violently. It is better to have one wife so there will no conflicts in sibling rivalrys. The cycle of sin continues through generations and only our faith in Christ can free us from this bondage.

  22. In verse 9 it states “Should I leave my fatness?
In the area around Shechem groves of olive trees flourished. Olive oil was used for the skin and as ceremonial purposes when priest and or kings were anointed. They burned it to provide illumination, and used as a article of food corresponding to our butter. Olive trees couldn’t be persuaded to leave it important work in order to be a king.

  23. This chapter illustrates justice. “Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.” One must never forget we will reap what we sow, therefore all should sow; peace, love and joy (Jesus). May the good Lord bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  24. Not every leader did good in the sight of God. God will punish those who do not follow his commandments and reward those who do. You have to choose which one you’re willing to do.

  25. And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and went hard unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire.

We can get caught off gaurd when we hasten after a prize.

And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech’s head, and all to brake his skull.

When we walk outside the covering, no telling what could fall from the sky. i pray that we all stay under our covering and not hasten after a prize.
