Judges 10

1And after Abimelech there arose to defend Israel Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar; and he dwelt in Shamir in mount Ephraim.

2And he judged Israel twenty and three years, and died, and was buried in Shamir.

3And after him arose Jair, a Gileadite, and judged Israel twenty and two years.

4And he had thirty sons that rode on thirty ass colts, and they had thirty cities, which are called Havothjair unto this day, which are in the land of Gilead.

5And Jair died, and was buried in Camon.

6And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD, and served Baalim, and Ashtaroth, and the gods of Syria, and the gods of Zidon, and the gods of Moab, and the gods of the children of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines, and forsook the LORD, and served not him.

7And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hands of the Philistines, and into the hands of the children of Ammon.

8And that year they vexed and oppressed the children of Israel: eighteen years, all the children of Israel that were on the other side Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead.

9Moreover the children of Ammon passed over Jordan to fight also against Judah, and against Benjamin, and against the house of Ephraim; so that Israel was sore distressed.

10And the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, saying, We have sinned against thee, both because we have forsaken our God, and also served Baalim.

11And the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Did not I deliver you from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines?

12The Zidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites, did oppress you; and ye cried to me, and I delivered you out of their hand.

13Yet ye have forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will deliver you no more.

14Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your tribulation.

15And the children of Israel said unto the LORD, We have sinned: do thou unto us whatsoever seemeth good unto thee; deliver us only, we pray thee, this day.

16And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the LORD: and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.

17Then the children of Ammon were gathered together, and encamped in Gilead. And the children of Israel assembled themselves together, and encamped in Mizpeh.

18And the people and princes of Gilead said one to another, What man is he that will begin to fight against the children of Ammon? he shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

  1. Worshiping False Gods

This one verse gives a distressingly long list of the false that the Isrealites worship. These gods claim control over the fertility of the land in this agricultral economy. The Israelites depend on successful crops for survival. I can see why they would think ..Why risk the anger of neighboring “fertility” gods? So they combine worship of the one true God, thinking they then have themselves “covered”. These local gods aren’t seen to be omniscient and can even be manipulated, something the Israelites could not even begin to do with their God, who declares, “My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways.” (Isa 55:8).

Their attraction to these powerless false gods may seem foolish and offensive to us today. However, todays false gods are no less attractive or fascinating , though they may be less obvious. Money, pleasure, success, -anything that comes between us and our relationship with God- are false gods, idols just as surely as the “Baals and the Ashtoreths.”

  2. 13Yet ye have forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will deliver you no more.

Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other Gods before me

You can make a God out of anything: Facebook could be your God, cell phone, computer, tv and the list goes on. The way you can tell you are serving one of these as your God is how much time you spend on each one and how much time you are spending with God. God help us to not put other things before you.

They provoked him to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations provoked they him to anger. Deut 32:16 KJV

    “oh my god”

(Judges 10:13) Yet ye have forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will deliver you no more.

(Judges 10:14) Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your tribulation.

“oh my god” is a popular saying in the world today. When I hear it from an unbeliver, it shouldn’t offend me because there has always been idols and false gods.

When I received my 11 year sentence, I also cried unto the Lord for instant deliverance…BUT God closed his ears to me for awhile…So, I had to chase the Lord…(because i was not in true repentance). When I truely repented He filled me with the Holy Ghost.

Sometimes people are frustrated with God because they do not receive instant deliverance…BUT God is really interested in your heart and tries to mold you from the inside out…

    TRUE REPENTANCE

(Isaiah 1:14) Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them.

(Isaiah 1:15) And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.

    (Isaiah 1:16) Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;

(Isaiah 1:17) Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.

(Isaiah 1:18) Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

(Isaiah 1:19) If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:

  4. 14. Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your tribulation.

Even though they had forsaken God and worshiped idols, that was only good enough for them when everything was going ok. They knew when real trouble came, only a “real God” could save them. We must make sure we don’t ignore the true living God until we’re in trouble. He is always God and he is always worthy of our worship.

    Jeremiah 10:10
But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.

  5. Mercy! Grace!

What a mighty God we serve. It would seem, sometimes, these two words could interchange. However, I don’t believe that is the case. Mercy could be thought of as being saved from what you deserve. The children of Israel were asking for deliverance. God chose not to delivery them at this point. Had he set them free that would be mercy. Had God chosen to deliver them and allowed them to overthrow the Philistines and Ammon and take hold of their belongings, that would be grace; not only being delivered from the present situation which you do not deserve to be delivered from, but getting a reward also.

    Thank you Jesus for Mercy!
    Thank you Jesus for Grace!

  6. GOD has a soft heart even when his is at his end with his people he forgives use when we repent thank you GOD for your mercy without it i would have no hope

  7. I hope that I don’t ever get God mad –
I want to make Him happy at all times.
    vs. 13-14>
God is tired of people serving other gods and will go to someone else to bless. I try to help myself and try everything in my power to help myself and others. Thank you Jesus for keeping me in your will.

    • Sorry I haven’t been on blog for a few days my internet wasn’t working but it works now PRAISE THE LORD. I learn alot from all the other saints and in my own reading. Thank you Jesus for eveeyhing.

  8. Here the Israelites turned away from God and served false gods. God was angry and let them bed be taken into slavery. When the Israelites first cried out to God he said no, but once they had true repentance God could longer bear their misery. So thankful for a loving God!

  9. THE INHERENT CYCLE OF SIN

6 And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD, and served Baalim, and Ashtaroth, and the gods of Syria, and the gods of Zidon, and the gods of Moab, and the gods of the children of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines, and forsook the LORD, and served not him.
7 And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hands of the Philistines, and into the hands of the children of Ammon.

It is obvious that in Israels mind all they needed was to get out from under the man of GOD giving them direction and instruction, possibly they felt like many people today; they just want to do only what they want to do. There is an obvious reoccurring status when they are “free” from responsibility; they do evil in the sight of the Lord. THE INHERENT CYCLE OF SIN.

As a result of (Proverbs 13:15 Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard.) Israel would find themselves desolate and desperate and cry out unto GOD. These occurrences are written for our example and we are foolish to ignore them. If we continue to do evil in the sight of the LORD. He knows, repent today, choose to serve the LORD and break the CYCLE OF SIN with a LIFE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS.

  10. And the. Holden of Israel said unto the Lord:we Jane sinned:Do thou into us whatsoever seemeth good unto thee;Deliver us only,we pray thee unth thee.
16.and they put away the strangle gods from among them, and serve the Lord, and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.

—–many people say and ask themselves this questions:Does God care about the hunger?
does God care about the violence in the world?
    Ofcourse he does!
I see a loving, graceious God here, but also a just God,and he is not going to be a willing party to our death……
They have done it,and done it,many many times,And God said that it was enough.

  11. In this chapter the People of Israel do go through their cycle of sin again! Once again, they cry out to God, the God who they know is the one true God who can save them. Verse 16 in the CEV reads…..”Then the Israelites got rid of the idols of the foreign gods, and they began worshiping only the LORD. Finally, there came a time when the LORD could no longer stand to see them suffer.”

The end of the chapter brings up a question, who would stand up, stand firm, rise up when things don’t look so good?? We cannot only be up beat, fired up or willing to work only when things are going good; but, also, in times of trouble!

  12. 13 Yet ye have forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will deliver you no more.

It grieves me to think of lives in this city that have walked away from God so many times that they are in this same position, where God will not deliver them anymore.

    Romans 6:1

What shall we say? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

I feel God calling me/ us back to a place of deeper pray, that we may interceded for those lives and rebuild the bridge of mercy that His grace may lead them out of their sin never to return again.

  13. 13Yet ye have forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will deliver you no more.

One thing. WE SERVE A JEALOUS GOD!

    “Try Fighting for Yourselves”

And the people and princes of Gilead said one to another, What man is he that will begin to fight against the children of Ammon? he shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead. (Judges 10:18 KJV)

It’s so much easier to go through the motions and hang on the shirt tale of someone elses anointing then to be a leader. The Children of Israel were still wanting a king to rule over them, when all the while God wanted to be king over them.

But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the Lord. And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them. (1 Samuel 8:6, )

  15. In their time opression of the children of Israel acknowledged their sin against God. By worshipping Baalim, they had broken the covenant; and so they interrupted the power of their enemies as the chastening hand of God.

  16. v10 And the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, ”
v”And they put away the strange GOD’s from among them, and severed the LORD: and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.

Disobedience, unwise choices, fears and even by the power of our words causes bondages and prisons, as the children of Israel.
When we weep before the LORD. A sincere cry that comes from the heart, and submission to HIS will .
GOD desires a relationship that we may know HIM as a GOD that is touch by the feeling of our infirmities. Our deliverance begins with s cry. …. Thank you JESUS for your Mercy and Grace and HIS everlasting LOVE

When I Cry out to You,
Then my enemies will turn back,
This I know, because GOD is for me
    Psalm 56:9

  17. this chapter is speaking to us all who has ever served other gods, such as drinking , smoking or anything that was against the one and true God our Lord and savior. He will deliver you out of any situation but if you continue to go back and do evil and serve others then God will let you. its not that He stops loving us its just that we serve a God who gives us a choice. the love never ends but God does expect the sin to stop. He named off cities that He delivered the children of isral from and yet they still asked to be delivered again. thank God we serve a foregiving God of many many chances

  18. Vs. 16, ” And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the LORD: and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.”

This scripture made me thing of the scripture found in Ephesians 4:30. “And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.”

How do we grieve the Spirit of God? By our unbelief in him and our disobedience to his word.

  19. In this chapter it reminds me of being in spiratual trouble because of being in continueous sin and exspected the Lord to pull you out of your mess.
How great and merciful God is when he will except your repentance and put you on the road to spiratual recovery.

  20. 10 Finally, they cried out to the Lord for help, saying, “We have sinned against you because we have abandoned you as our God and have served the images of Baal.”
11 The Lord replied, “Did I not rescue you from the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines,
12 the Sidonians, the Amalekites, and the Maonites? When they oppressed you, you cried out to me for help, and I rescued you.
13 Yet you have abandoned me and served other gods. So I will not rescue you anymore.
14 Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen! Let them rescue you in your hour of distress!” (NLT)

There are no shades of grey, on the fence, or as an old friend once said, no “wishy washy,” when it comes to who you chose serve.

  21. NLT 15 But the Israelites pleaded with the Lord and said, “We have sinned. Punish us as you see fit, only rescue us today from our enemies.”

Oh, how we beg God for help during times of trouble. Even to the point of asking for discipline from God. God wants us to praise him at all times. But if we continue to ignore God, he will ignore us and not hear us. Our enemies dont care about us, they want to suppress our voice about God.

Keep praising God daily, and ask for forgiveness, God will come to the rescue!

  22. 15 But the Israelites pleaded with the Lord and said, “We have sinned. Punish us as you see fit, only rescue us today from our enemies.”

Oh how we beg God for help during times of trouble. We should always be looking to God. If we continue to ignore God, he will ignore us and not hear us. God wants us to praise him at all times. Keep praying daily, ask for forgiveness and God will rescue you!

  23. 15 But the Israelites pleaded with the Lord and said, “We have sinned. Punish us as you see fit, only rescue us today from our enemies.”

Oh how we beg God for help during times of trouble. God wants our praises at all times even during the good times. If we ignore God, he will not hear us when we need him. We should not make him a convenience God only when needed. Keep praying daily, reading his Word, and he will rescue us during times of trouble!

  24. v10 Then the Israelites cried out unto the Lord, “We have sinned against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals.”
Ps 51v4 David says ” Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight…..
Only when we realize that our sin is not against our neighbor, our family or friend but against God, can we find true repentance and forgiveness.

  25. iEat the Word for supper

(Judges 10:8) And that year they vexed and oppressed the children of Israel: eighteen years, all the children of Israel that were on the other side Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead.

(Judges 10:9) Moreover the children of Ammon passed over Jordan to fight also against Judah, and against Benjamin, and against the house of Ephraim; so that Israel was sore distressed.
    rd

  26. Verse 14 Go cry to the gods ye have chosen… Wow! This is what happens when we chose to follow after idos and worldly things. God will give us over to those things that we love and trust in. Of course these things cant save us. We need God make the difference in our lives. Im glad that I have a God I can trust in.

  27. Great is thy faithfulness!

As I look back over my life and compare myself to the children of Israel I can see some similarities. At first when I began to read how many times they turned away from God I got angry. I then had to stop and reflect over my life and ask myself “how many times have you cried out for forgiveness?” My God has been very merciful and faithful!

    Lam 3: 18-23
18 And I said, My strength and my hope is perished from the LORD:
19 Remembering mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall.
20 My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me.
21 This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.
22 It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

  28. and take heed to not deceive ourselves about the frailty of our humanity and the reality of sin.

Sometimes there just comes a breaking point. Love will reach and reach but continual rejection and betrayal without a real, lasting repentance will lead to a letting go. We must be wary when Love steps aside from our lives; it should be a red flag that something is wrong, and has been wrong for quite some time.

    • Sorry, very strange, first two lines got pasted as an old clip-board item, should be v13:

Yet ye have forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will deliver you no more. (Judges 10:13 KJV)

  29. The children of Isreal never seem to learn their lesson. They continued to go back to other gods, but God in his mercy still came back and delivered them. The same with us, although forgiven there is always consequences for our disobedience.

  30. This chapter illustrates despondency. “Yet ye have forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will deliver you no more.” We must do all we can (ipray, iwork) so that no one hears this from the Creator (Jesus). May the good Lord bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  31. 6And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD, and served Baalim, and Ashtaroth, and the gods of Syria, and the gods of Zidon, and the gods of Moab, and the gods of the children of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines, and forsook the LORD, and served not him.

7And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hands of the Philistines, and into the hands of the children of Ammon.

I believe there are many in this situation today and may not even realize. They have provoked God and His anger is kindled against them because once again they have forgotten Him and turned to other gods; false religion, an easier way, a less sacrificial way that pleases their flesh. But one of these days, they will be tired of the vexing and oppression and recognize what they have done and put away the strange gods, and the one true and living God will deliver them. Praise the Lord. I see many backsliders coming home in Jesus name!

  32. 11And the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Did not I deliver you from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines?

12The Zidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites, did oppress you; and ye cried to me, and I delivered you out of their hand.

13Yet ye have forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will deliver you no more.

14Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your tribulation.

The children of Israel were given chance after chance to get it right. There comes a point and time when God will step back and allow you to fall in your trouble. It is important that we never get to the point. When we repent we should always do it with a true repented heart and never return to that sin again. God is always watching, but it is to the individual to refrain from sin and that can be done through the Holy Ghost.

  33. See what your false god can do for you. Try that strange god on something real like bringing peace to your family, or delivering Giants into your hand. False gods cant do that, only Jesus can. Serving the Lord isn’t the easiest thing to do. We as a nation look at the President for our guidance or strength. It doesn’t work because we only see what can he give us. If we all had a one on one relationship with the President he might care a little more about our welfare. No man has the ability to have a relationship with the entire world, only God. Our relationship is the key to him ruling in our lives.

  34. I was trying to find my homework from Church this morning and the lord dealt with me visually. I blog and do all my study in my office where its quite. The problem with that is that i also run my business out of that same office. I haven’t picked up my homework all last week because of the situation in the loss that we suffered, but i did come out here and do what I had to do for work. What that did is let my homework get lost under all my work stuff. I am convicted! I let my work be before God. God is laying underneath bids and invoices in my office and i wont take the time to dig him out, but I will take the time to stack stuff on top of him. DON’T LOSE GOD UNDERNEATH ALL YOUR JUNK.
