Ruth 3

1Then Naomi her mother in law said unto her, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee?

2And now is not Boaz of our kindred, with whose maidens thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to night in the threshingfloor.

3Wash thyself therefore, and anoint thee, and put thy raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the floor: but make not thyself known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking.

4And it shall be, when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do.

5And she said unto her, All that thou sayest unto me I will do.

6And she went down unto the floor, and did according to all that her mother in law bade her.

7And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of corn: and she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down.

8And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself: and, behold, a woman lay at his feet.

9And he said, Who art thou? And she answered, I am Ruth thine handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman.

10And he said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter: for thou hast shewed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich.

11And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman.

12And now it is true that I am thy near kinsman: howbeit there is a kinsman nearer than I.

13Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinsman, well; let him do the kinsman’s part: but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee, as the LORD liveth: lie down until the morning.

14And she lay at his feet until the morning: and she rose up before one could know another. And he said, Let it not be known that a woman came into the floor.

15Also he said, Bring the vail that thou hast upon thee, and hold it. And when she held it, he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her: and she went into the city.

16And when she came to her mother in law, she said, Who art thou, my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her.

17And she said, These six measures of barley gave he me; for he said to me, Go not empty unto thy mother in law.

18Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day.

  1. Ruth was known by the people of the city as a virtuous woman, because she didnt sleep around she worked very hard, even though she didnt have to follow her mother in law she did it out of loyality, the word said that boaz told ruth he was a near kinsman bt she had a kinsman nearer than him, to me he is telling her I am a relative because she was married to family bt you have a closer relative than me but regardless of that if he does nnnnnot do the things for you nthat you will then boaz said nthen I will because she showed him kindness at then beginning and latter.

Nice to Hear a Good Story

After hearing all the stories of fake pagan gods, its really nice to hear a story of a man and woman of honor.

    Ruth was a virtuous woman

11And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman.

    virtuous-H2428

From H2342; probably a force, whether of men, means or other resources; an army, wealth, virtue, valor, strength: – able, activity, (+) army, band of men (soldiers), company, (great) forces, goods, host, might, power, riches, strength, strong, substance, train, (+) valiant (-ly), valour, virtuous (-ly), war, worthy (-ily).

RUTH WAS A WARRIOR…In the spirit world. Her humility and hard work lifted her up beyond anything she could physically do. SHE LET THE MAN REST HIS FEET ABOVE HER HEAD…

MANY WOMEN SAY, “I’M NOT GOING TO LET MEN STEP ALL OVER ME!!!” RUTH SAID BY HER ACTIONS, “STEP ON ME.”

OF COURSE, HE DIDN’T “WALK ALL OVER HER”. MOST MEN WON’T WALK OVER A HUMBLE LADY. HE HONORED HER.

    1 Peter 3

1 Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;2 While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:6 Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

  3. 18. Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day.

It is so hard to wait, but I know that God’s will is perfect and if I would just wait on Him, things will turn out much better than if I try to “fix” them.

    Isaiah 40:31
But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

    Psalms 46:10
Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

    Psa 37:5-7
Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.
Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.

  4. THE OBSCURITY OF HUMILITY

17 And she said, These six measures of barley gave he me; for he said to me, Go not empty unto thy mother in law.

In our face everyday is the promotion of people, self promotion, political promotion, and professional promotion. However we read in this very refreshing story of Naomi and Ruth how hard work, submission, obedience and humility is able to Bless and Provide for them both.

Naomi utilizes the wisdom of life experiences to guide Ruth into a position of provision and in the process of guiding Ruth; Naomi receives her provision and blessing without complaining or demanding.

Boaz knew her and about her. We must remember that greater than Boaz is watching over us and knows where we are and what we need, we must be careful to apply these 4 attributes to our walk:

    WORK
    SUBMIT
    OBEY
    HUMBLE

We find in a time of need 6 measures of barley through our obscurity.

And she said unto her, All that thou sayest unto me I will do. And she went down unto the floor, and did according to all that her mother in law bade her.

God can bless us so much when we obey instruction of those over us.

  7. The threshing floor was the place where the grain was separated from the harvest wheat. The wheat stalks were crushed, either by hand or by oxen, and the valuable grain separated from the worthless chaff. The floor was made from rock or soil and located outside the village, usually on an elevated site where the crushed wheat was thrown into the air. Boaz spent the night beside the threshing floor to prevent theft and to wait for his turn to thresh grain. Threshing was often done at night because daylight hours were spent harvesting.

  8. v18 Then said she,Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day.

GOD asked us to do something against our human nature.
“Those that wait upon the LORD”
We can do something for the LORD while we wait for HIS Promise.
GOD can take something little and make alot.
We can never out give the LORD of our time treasure and talents.

“Work for JESUS” Pray, Fast and Submit

“Show Kindness to your Family by your Actions”

And he said, Blessed be thou of the Lord, my daughter: for thou hast shewed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich. (Ruth 3:10 KJV)

When I first read this I wondered how Ruth showed kindness just by staying away from the young men…but now I get it. Their society was not like ours… In our American society if we have a family member who is promiscuous we just say, “Oh we’ll, that’s on them”, but back in the day it was a BIG deal that brought shame on the whole family…

    • pro·mis·cu·ous (pr-msky-s)

      1. Having casual sexual relations frequently with different partners; indiscriminate in the choice of sexual partners.
      2. Lacking standards of selection; indiscriminate.
      3. Casual; random.
      4. Consisting of diverse, unrelated parts or individuals; confused: “Throngs promiscuous strew the level green” (Alexander Pope).

  10. If the shoe fits, wear it

Ruth 3:3 “Wash yourself therefore, and anoint yourself and put on your best clothes, and go down to the threshing floor; but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking.” Ruth 3:7 “When Boaz had eaten and drunk and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain; and she came secretly, and uncovered his feet and lay down”

    Levirate Marriage arrangement
    Deu 25: 5-9
5 If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband’s brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband’s brother unto her.
6 And it shall be, that the firstborn which she beareth shall succeed in the name of his brother which is dead, that his name be not put out of Israel.
7 And if the man like not to take his brother’s wife, then let his brother’s wife go up to the gate unto the elders, and say, My husband’s brother refuseth to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel, he will not perform the duty of my husband’s brother.
    8 Then the elders of his city shall call him, and speak unto him: and if he stand to it,and say, I like not to take her;
9 Then shall his brother’s wife come unto him in the presence of the elders, and loose his shoe from off his foot, and spit in his face, and shall answer and say, So shall it be done unto that man that will not build up his brother’s house.

It should be noted that it is not the “right” of the woman but the “responsibility” of the brother-in-law. According to later usage the responsibility was placed not only on the brother-in-law but also other close male relatives.

Under Jewish tradition the right place for her to do this is at his uncovered feet (symbolic of her willingness to place herself under his authority (under his wing, or garment). She had to uncover his feet as a further way to show her desire to be in this position).

Vs 9 And he said, Who art thou? And she answered, I am Ruth thine handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman.

This is a symbolic expression of marriage. Skirt can also be translated to wing. Another words she said “Take me under your wing.” Cover me, is a term of intimacy. See Ezk 16:8 & Ps 91.

It needs to be pointed out here that Boaz (3:9) did not cover her with his garment (kanaph –wing, tallit). Instead he explained why he could NOT declare her as his wife (by covering her in the ritual) at this time – there was another who had the “right of first refusal” upon her request for Levirate marriage. He goes on to further state that if Redeemer #1 will not fulfill his duties as Kinsman-Redeemer with Ruth, then he, Boaz, certainly will.

Now a days the man gets on one knee and ask for her hand in marriage. I would much rather start off a marriage with the wife being submissive and the man totally covering the wife with his wings of protection and not just the hand. It seems more intimate and a huge declaration.

  11. 11And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman.

    Virtue

Comming from a world of sin, and becomming known as a person of virtue, is no easy task. When sin and temptation are all around virtue will keep one from much trouble. Boaz had seen and had heard about the commitment and the change that Ruth had made, changing the God that she served, and keeping Naomi fed and taken care of. Boaz could see that Ruth was about more than herself… How many times are we justy out for self???

  12. He called her virtuous!

11And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman.

Prov. 31:10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

    VIR’TUOUS, a.

    1. Morally good; acting in conformity to the moral law; practicing the moral duties, and abstaining from vice; as a virtuous man.

    2. Being in conformity to the moral or divine law; as a virtuous action; a virtuous life.

There was not immorality in what she did for she laid at his feet, like a servant or a dog would. A sign of submission and humility, he was an honest man for he could of taken advantage of it but he tells her there is another kinsman but if he doesn’t want to do his duty according to their cultural traditions, then and only then will he take her for a wife. That statement by itself shows that she was accepted as their own. Just as in the beginning her obedience to Naomi brings her blessings.

  13. Humbly Waiting on the Lord

She waited and worked through the barley and wheat harvests Ru 2:23. In Ru 3:18 Naomi says that Boaz will not rest until the matter is settled today.
Timing really is everything, Ruth had to show herself to be a virtuous woman to be respected and admired for her commitment to her passed away in-law family whom she has no real obligation to. Earning the trust and respect of others is not a quick and easy task. Boaz was always watching out and observing Ruth, so does our Redeemer.

I am reminded of David who had a similar senario, he was annointed king over Israel, but Saul was in reign. David didn’t jump on the throne and assasinate Saul even though he had many chances to do so, no he ran away from Saul who was trying to kill him instead. He waited on the Lord to move and give him the throne. In this same way Ruth waited, showed herself a virtuous woman who did not take matters into her own hands. She did as she was instructed by her mother-in-law Naomi and asked Boaz to cover her as a kinsman redeemer. She didn’t rush up to Boaz’s house after she found out he was the kinsman redeemer back in ch 2 and ask to be redeemed right away. Both Ruth and David show that waiting on the Lord is both humbling and promising.

  14. Ruths obediance to Naiomi cause her house to be blessed. She humbled out to what was told to her and as a result pleased Boaz so much that he gave her food and said that whatever she wanted she could get. Thats the type of blessings God has for us.

  15. 3Wash thyself therefore, and anoint thee, and put thy raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the floor: but make not thyself known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking.

  16. its all about submisson and obeying and being under authority to the ones that God has placed in your (my) life. Just think how much God would/will bless his people when they are in the right spot on the chain of command…….

  17. Boaz was a man of integrity.Ruth was a women of humble servitude to her kinsmen-redeemer. Thank God for biblical history that touches the heart.

  18. 18Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day.

Patience what a great virtue to have. Waiting on the Lord and waiting on his time. Let us never be in a hurry, and continue to call upon the Lord at all times. Psalms 27:14 Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.

  19. Also he said, Bring the vail that thou hast upon thee, and hold it. And when she held it, he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her: and she went into the city.

Ruth was not only physically covered by her Vail but her obedience to the authority in her life gave her a spiritual covering. God blesses us through our covering. Hold on to your covering and when it is time God will measure out a blessing to you.

    Christ and the church

8 Now when I passed by thee, and looked upon thee, behold, thy time was the time of love; and I spread my skirt over thee, and covered thy nakedness: yea,

  21. 1Then Naomi her mother in law said unto her, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee?

Titus 2:4 “That they may teach the young women…” Ruth was willing to submit herself to the instructions of Naomi. Her obedience and submission allowed her the opportunity to marry Boaz.

Lord help us be willing to listen and be obedient to those that have forged the path in the truth.

  22. Vs 5-6 Ruth was obedient to her elder.

Vs 11 Ruth was known throughout the land as a virtuous woman. Doing what is right will make people notice you.

  23. This chapter illustrates obedience. “And she said unto her, All that thou sayest unto me I will do.” Each of us could accomplish great things with obedience such as this, the church could accomplish much with obedience such as this and Jesus could accomplish anything with obedience such as this. May the good Lord bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  24. 5And she said unto her, All that thou sayest unto me I will do.

God places people in our lives for a reason. We have a God that will never lead us astray. As Ruth was with Naomi, we must have that same mindset with God, whatever God says to do, we will do.

  25. 11And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman.

No doubt Ruth was watched by all the town becuase she was a foreigner, and the people were probably wondering what she and Naomi were going to do! They all knew their tragic story. It wasn’t lomg befiore Ruth won the respect of the town and of Boaz because as a young woman who was widowed, she did not chase after any men for a husband. She remained chaste, followed what she told to do, and as a result, was greatly blessed! This was a woman of outstanding character-no wonder she chosen to be in the lineage of Jesus Christ!

  26. 11And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman.

And Naomi had a kinsman of her husband’s, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech; and his name was Boaz. (Ruth 2:1 KJV)

In the Hebrew, the same word used to describe Ruth as virtuous is used to describes Boaz as wealthy. Proverbs 31 describes a virtuous woman, and I’ve heard if taught that the virtuous woman of Proverbs 31 is a type of the church. Ruth is the only woman in the Bible that is specifically called virtuous, and if she is to be a type of the church, it speaks a powerful message to us today.

God will redeem us, but He is not looking to return for a bride who is still a stranger but rather one who is like Him. It can seem like a tall order but He has made a way for us through the new birth experience and the process of holiness to be transformed into His image. God is looking for a bride who is a matching fit for Him, just as Ruth “fit” Boaz.

  27. Verse 5 in the MSG reads….”Ruth said, “If you say so, I’ll do it, just as you’ve told me.” Ruth’s submission and obedience is one we should strive for. She honored, respected and was submissive to all the direction of Naomi. In doing so, she was blessed!
