1 Samuel 4

1And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Ebenezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.

2And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.

3And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.

4So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

5And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.

6And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp.

7And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.

8Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.

9Be strong and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight.

10And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.

11And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.

12And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.

13And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.

14And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli.

15Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see.

16And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son?

17And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.

18And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

19And his daughter in law, Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her.

20And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.

21And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.

22And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.

  1. 5 And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.

6 And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp.

Christians have many symbols to remind them of God, they have the cross, the fish, the hands closed in prayer; nothing wrong with them until they begin to pay so much attention to the symbol that they forget The One it symbolizes. Israel saw their symbol the Ark of God, and they made a great sound, but when the Philistines heard that sound they recognize what it meant in verse 8 they said “these mighty Gods” they had no idea it was only One, One mightier than any of theirs, but they recognized His Power. That Power that Israel forgotten. They shouted with the Ark but didn’t noticed that His Glory was not with them, they went into battle none the less & verse 10 calls it a “very great slaughter”. Like wise many Christian wear their symbols, but forget that God through the Holy Ghost must live in them for them to have Power from God. They jump into the battle & then look up saying “why Lord, why does has to happened to me”. All because they have their symbols but forgot the One True God has to live in them. They forgot that their everyday actions must reflect He who lives in them. They fail to recognize that His Glory had departed from them.

LET US NEVER FORGET WHO WE BELONG TO, WHO WE SERVE & WHO LIVES IN US BY THE HOLY GHOST!!!! Let your everyday walk reflect HIM and Only HIM so others may recognize that GREATER IS HE THAT IS IN YOU THAT he that is in the world. For HE gave you His Victory!!!

  2. i L O V E to eat the Word for breakfast

    “The spirit of Religion”

3And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies

It was never intended for the children of Israel to assume that the ark of the covenant (the object) would save them, but they needed to first repent and then believe that God Himself would save them.

*The enemy was frightened when they heard the “SHOUT” of Israel. However, without repented hearts, Israel was just going through the motions.

  3. 1 Samuel 4:22
And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.

The glory departed, not because the ark was taken, and not because they lost the battle. The glory of God was taken because of the two sons of Eli did not respect God’s glory.

It says that Israel pitched beside Ebenezer. This word means stone of help.

Jesus is the rock, but just like Israel, we cannot expect the safety and protection from him if we do not respect his glory and obey his commands.

    Exodus 19:5-6
Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: 6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.

    Deuteronomy 11:26-27
Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse; 27 A blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you this day: 28 And a curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not known.

  4. Thank you Jesus for out giving us. Had to say that and I love and enjoy being at the Pofw. Thank you Jesus! It’s been such a blessing.

    Vs 22-
When we dont give things are taken. I believe that cause it’s happened to me before. Read the Scripture in this passage over and over and I got the same meaning.

  5. Not a Good Luck Charm
    vs. 21-22

The ark of the covenant is the Israelites’ most important sacred object. They believe that the ark is God’s throne, the place that represents God’s presence among them (Ex 37:1-9). But as years pass, the people become less interested in God and more interested in using the ark as a “good luck charm”. They begin to trust in the “power” of the ark itself, rather than in the power behind it. If we hold on to our Bibles in the phyisical realm, and not in the spiritual realm its not going to do as much good. If we look at the Word of God as simply a book of “what to do’s, and what not to do’s” and cute story encounters, the Bible, and the ark are going to start looking like a history book, mysteries that you cannot unlock or only happens in the biblical times. This is something you cannot collect up on the shelf, and think it makes them look good and distinguished for it. What good is any history book going to do anybody if they do not study and learn from it? The same case is with the Bible of today and pressence of God, only its the MOST important thing ever! how much better it would be to get abosorbed in God, If he keeps his Holy Spirit within you, you would therefore become the vessel needed to conjour up this knowledge such as food. You don’t want to play with starving your eternity.

After the ark is taken away, the people are devestated. They feel that with the ark gone, God’s glory and pressence have also departed. While few of us today place our faith in physical objects, we too, can feel abandoned by God when a surge of tough “sand” creeps into our shoes. Like the Israelites, those moments challenge us to grow our roots deeper into the steady soil of God’s unchanging character.

  6. GOD IS NO IDOL

3 And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.

There something about the word fetch and the ark of the covenant of the LORD that just do not go together. The word fetch means to carry, take away, to carry out. It sounds kinda like a fast food order from Wendy’s or McDonalds and that is the exact result they received fast food service, easy in and easy out. Too often people treat GOD like an idol to be acquired. GOD has always desired relationship from his people.

The end result of absence of relationship is evident here, there is a false security when GOD is simply an idol to carry around when think we need him. This is why so often the shouts of a Sunday Night fade into the whaling of Monday Night.

    Easy in easy out!

10 And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.
11 And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.

The Philistines are a type of the flesh of man. When we allow the flesh to rule for long periods of time, we make only take temporary possession of victory. The Philistines obviously had more respect for the “PRESENCE” of GOD than Israel did. This is why the flesh desires to keep us from the “ARK” (word, spirit, and blood of JESUS).

    • 4:7,8 And the Philistines were afraid, for they said;God is come into the. Amp.And they said,WOE UNTO US!!! For there hath not been such a thing here before.
8.Woe unto us! Who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods?
These are the gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.

—- James2:19 Thou believest that there is one God;thou doest well:the devils also believe and tremble.
—– they knew, remembered what happend before..
Today we don’t have the ark …. But we have his Spirit.
Like the pastor said yesterday;the enemy should know who we are,him and his devils should think twice before they plan something against us……
Holy Spirit of the Most High,I need you!!!!!!

  7. V.22 And she said, the glory is departed from Israel; for the Ark of God is taken. God kept His word, and His word will always stand! 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. The spirit of God will not always strive with men…sin, iniquity, transgressions will eventually separate us from God!!!!

  8. LOOKING FOR LOVE IN ALL THE WRONG PLACES

When we try to judge ourselves on what we have instead of who we have we are in trouble. if you are looking for stuff to change your life, what you need to do is have a bonfire and worship God. His glory is found in us not in some thing. How did they miss it so bad? You cant replace God with stuff!

  9. 21And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.

22And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.

Israel was a nation that knew God’s glory, power, and presence yet turned away from him when they became strong. They turned away form God so much that the presence of God departed from them long before the ark was taken. The ark being taken was a visible sign for them to see their spiritual state.

They allowed deception to creep in and blind them from the fact that their perception was off and the mind of Christ was not in them but they were holding to their own minds. In their ignorance they thought “if I can just get the ark here in my tent then God will be obligated to show favor and show up and show out.” No… Not so, God is not influenced to show favor when your living in sin, because sin separates us from Him.

So, how do we get back to Him, our first love? Romans 2:4 and says the goodness of God leads us to repentance, and repentance is the only way to return to our first love. No where in this chapter does it say that the children of Israel repented so their reward was death.

Vs. 5 says “And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.” This reminds me of the story of Paul and Silas. In both stories they praise and the earth shake but each had a different ending. So, what happened? Each birth something, Israel birthed the reward of death according to Romans 6:23 and Paul and Silas birthed eternal life according to the same scripture.

We must evaluate our lives, according to the scripture so that we too do not find ourselves like the children of Israel in a state of deception.

  10. iLove to Eat the Word for Lunch

    Backsliding

22And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.

This is exactly what happened to Samson.

And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the Lord was departed from him. (Judges 16:20 KJV)

If you play with leviathan (the devil), you will soon be taken captive

Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down? Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him for a servant for ever? Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens? Shall the companions make a banquet of him? shall they part him among the merchants? He beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride. (Job 41:1, 4-6, 34 KJV)

In that day the Lord with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea. (Isaiah 27:1 KJV)

  11. 6And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp.
7And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.
Remember what God has done in your life. He is so awesome. It was because they got the ark back to the rightful owners they were so excited to have it back on their possession that even there enemies were now afraid of them. God has made us to be this way. As long as we will remember that God is and always will be in control , there is nothing He cannot do. What more could we ask for that God have His one Son that as long as we believe and trust in Him, and have the Holy Ghost. We have a promise of life everlasting.

  12. After reading this I feel sorry for the children of israel if they would had gave God the glory instead of the ark of god, I beleive God would had showed up bt they cant go back bt we have a chance today to give the one and true God the glory.

  13. 20. And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.

She was no longer excited about having the baby because she knew that without the presence of God, there was nothing to look forward to for her child. Just like when newcomers are born into the kingdom of God today; we must make sure the glory/presence/anointing of God is working in our lives and services to help them get established and grounded so that they won’t leave as quickly as they came. Unlike Phinehas’ wife, we are excited because we know God is with us and there is so much more to look forward to in a life lived for Him!!.

  14. it was no surprice to eli when he found out that his sons were dead the shoke was the ark was taken and he knew it was from his disobeying God him and his hole family paid for it be carefull what you do because you dont know ho it will effect you may say ho is it going to hurt but you never know every action has a reaction

  15. And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.

8Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness

Irsael had the perfect opportunity to let God show and show out! Had the people been living victoriously all along, God would have defended them like before. But when sin crept into their daily lives, along with the abhoring of the sacrifice that Eli’s sons caused-they were left defensless. It reminds me of Samsom, who thought he could shake himself one more time and the power of God would be right there when he needed it. But he too let carnal pleasures and desires overcome him.

Our enemy knows how we live day in & day out-he knows if we have the power of God when he attacks! And of course Satan attacks when we are the weakest! Remember who you are in God and remember your victories-then remind the devil that he is already defeated by the blood of the Lamb and the word of your testimony!

  16. v22 And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of GOD is taken

We must take the opportunity of HIS Presence.
and be filled with HIS SPIRIT.
The day will come when HE will withdraw

Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: ISA.55:6

  17. 22And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.

I would submit that the glory of the Lord had departed from Israel long before the ark was taken. The sin of Eli’s sons and his failure to correct them had separated them from the Lord’s presence.

The previous chapter states Eli’s eyes were dim and he allowed the light in the temple to go out.

And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see; -1 Samuel 3:2

And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep; -1 Samuel 3:3

The light within the tabernacle gave light to the priest to minister .

And thou shalt command the children of Israel, that they bring thee pure oil olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamp to burn always.
In the tabernacle of the congregation without the vail, which is before the testimony, Aaron and his sons shall order it from evening to morning before the LORD: it shall be a statute for ever unto their generations on the behalf of the children of Israel. -Exodus 27:20-21

The candlestick also for the light, and his furniture, and his lamps, with the oil for the light, -Exodus 35:14

  18. 17And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.

Eli recognized that the words that Samuel shared with him previously of the judgement that was going to come to he and his sons was being fulfilled. Eli had allowed the vile things that his sons done to go without correction and now he, the overseer which is responsible for what goes on in the temple is going to be judged as well.

God make wink at ignorance once, but when he has had his fill, he will send judgement. Lord help us to be cautious of what we allow to take place in the temple,

  19. God had judged Eli and his two sons just like he said he would. His words do not fall to the ground and will not return void. Sadly the wife of Eli`s son had a child and thought it fitting to name him Ichabod because God’s glory had departed.God don’t ever let your glory depart from me and my family!

  20. 21 And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.

Too often we let the circumstances of our lives determine our outlook and even our future. Life turned upside down for this woman in a day, the loss of her husband, father in law, and the ark of God. In the emotion of the moment she left her son with permanent negativity by naming him something negative without any glimpse of hope. Instead of trusting that God would return to His chosen people this mother allowed her circumstances mark her child.

The ark had become an object of trust. The Israelites at some time seemed to believe the ark and God were one and the same. Instead of believing in God for the miracle, the favor, or even praying to God they believed the ark would save them.
3and when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.
the ark was not God. It was an object. Yes the Lord blessed and used this object but it was still an object.but the Israelites put their faith into an object thus creating an idol.
we as christians need to be careful not to allow anything to become our idol including a church, a pastor, evangelist, etc. By putting our trust in them instead of the one true God that appoints them or uses them. We can’t forget that we are working for Jesus not anyone or anything else. Jesus is the source of our favor, anointing, blessings, etc!

When I first got back in my old church we had an evangelist for revival and he told a story of a lady who he prayed for and she was healed. He told her she needed to keep going to church and be faithful etc. She had to be picked up for church and eventually people stopped going by and getting her. She got sick again and he was told she was screaming his name before she died. I remember him telling us that he couldn’t save anybody only Jesus and she should have been screaming out His name!

    Remember who is in control!

  21. No more Ichabod

Ichabod: the glory has departed; where is the glory

We don’t ever want to get to the point in our life where the Lord’s glory has left us. Where no glory is, there is no victory. The glory of the Lord is our strength and without strength we cannot defeat the enemy. Let the glory of the Lord reign in your life.

  22. 20And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.

When the weight of mistakes comes to light, it can cause a shift in priorities. Normally, the birth of a son (especially in light of the father’s death) would have been a cause for rejoicing. Yet the loss of Israel out-shadowed the gain of a son. This birth of a son comes in contrast to the birth of Samuel, one being seemingly symbolic of the spiritual loss and decay of Israel and the other of God’s mercy and how He was reaching to spiritually revive His people.

Losses can help us put things in perspective, however, we must be careful not to open the door to despair. Otherwise an opportunity to change may very well become our tomb and not our womb for transformation into what God desires us to be.

  23. The Israelites thought having the ark was all they needed to defeat the Philistines when all they.needed to do was cry out to God.

  24. In this chapter Eli’s sons were trying to bring back the sacred chest from Shiloh for the Lord to help them and rescue them from their enemies.” Unfortunately for them, their demise was coming to pass as it had been spoken by the Lord.

The chapter ends with the death of Eli and the birth of Ichabod (which means “Where is the glory?”)

  25. This chapter illustrates fulfillment. The Lord told Eli what was to come, which he lived to witness the execution of. All can rest assured if God says it, then it shall be so. God’s Word tells us he is coming soon, which is why we must work (iwork) quickly. May the good Lord bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  26. 22And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.

What glories do we allow to slip out of our lives when the Lord, the Bible, our praise, our prayer leaves us? Many times our choices to do or not do something will allow the glory to depart from us because the Lord has been taken out of our lives. If we fill our time with things that are not seeking the Lord then we are allowing the glory to depart from us.

  27. Here again I see a classic example of the people looking to an idol instead of the one true God.The ark was in the camp and the people shouted. But the word doesn’t say what they shouted or who they were thanking and praising. Lets not be so overcome by our big mouths and loud praise that we forget exactly who we are honoring. At this point the people could shout but had lost sight of the One True God and bagan to look towardthe ark for there salvation!
