1 Samuel 5

1And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Ebenezer unto Ashdod.

2When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.

3And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the LORD. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.

4And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.

5Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon’s house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.

6But the hand of the LORD was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof.

7And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god.

8They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither.

9And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the LORD was against the city with a very great destruction: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts.

10Therefore they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us and our people.

11So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.

12And the men that died not were smitten with the emerods: and the cry of the city went up to heaven.

  1. Vs 9/
    I want to know the Lord and His ways at all tines. In this chapter it sounds like they were worshipping other gods and the Lord smote them with emerodes -something thats secret and hard to get rid of.
    we think that fleshly things are hard to get rid of what about what the Lord can do -we dont want that to happen to us.
    Thank you Jesus for speaking this Scripture to me on this wonderful and Holy day that you made.

    “OH YE FAT FISH god”

    and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.

    Notice that the Word says his head and both palms were “CUT OFF”.

    I believe the angel of the Lord walked in that place and with his sword cut that fat FISH god up.-in your face dagon, for real.

    ****Modern tradition…could it be from the following statment?****

    -Carryng the bride over the threshold.

    OH, that lil fat fish symbol on the back of automobiles….that is the ancient symbol of Dagon the fish god…

    • why does it all matter? The Lord does not see time as we see time, the angels and demons do not see time as we see time…to the spirit world, these scriptures are as if they happened yesterday. and as we pratice the same customs as the ancient people did, it throws the spirit world into confusion

    God will put anything false in its place!!! Everything & everyone must worship ONLY THE ONE TRUE GOD JESUS!

    Psalm 81: 9 Let there be no strange god among you; Nor shall you worship any foreign god.

    Exodus 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

    Our God is a jealous God, He will remove anything that you exhort above Him for above HIM there is no other.

    Deut. 28:13 And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the LORD thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them:

    “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me.”

    God removes dagon’s head & hands. The head for Deut. 28:13 says that “He shall make thee the head” by cutting dagon’s head off is my opinion He is telling everyone that dagon is no part of Him, so why do we still have him as a symbol of Christianity is beyond me. By cutting dagon’s hands off God is telling them that this god can not do anything for them, he can do no work, and only God has the whole world in His hands.

    Let our testimony be Bold, Loud, and Courageous!!!! Let us be dagons slayers, bring your sword out and illuminate the way of Christians that still use it as a symbol. This is the reasoning behind it they say that when Christians were persecuted they had to mark their way & found that the first curve of the fish top part wasn’t recognized by the Romans or others and then the other Christians will see it and draw the bottom part of the fish. This began about 2 to 3 centuries after Jesus rose to the heavens. They claim it was because it was a simple symbol and Jesus said He will make them fishermen of men. In my opinion & coming from a Catholic background, knowing a lot of their history, they pick that because only they knew the code while the Romans and other will confuse it with one of their gods and leave it alone. Isn’t that misleading? Using the sign of their gods to hide behind it? LORD FORBID!!!!!! It would be like taking the mark of the beast to help our fellow Christians in the end times. Either way you look at it is treason you took his mark.

  4. 1 Samuel 5:7
    And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god.

    The bible says the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. In witnessing the awesome display, the philistines began to notice how awesome God was.

    Yet instead of leaving the wooden fish, they chose to walk away from God.

    Oh that the reverent fear of God could be in my heart and cause a humble surrender to him. The philistines, who represent the flesh, were so carnal that they wanted to feel the pleasure more than the reality of THE awesome, magnificent, bigger than the universe, one true GOD.

    This chapter challenges us to examine our hearts. God cut off the head of Dagon (authority) and the hands (power, ability) to help the Philistines.

    iPray that my response to God will be to run to him, if and when he cuts off the idols that come up in my life.

  5. THE TEARING DOWN OF STRNG HOLDS the worshipers of dagon found out that there god was nothing compared to the one true GOD the world wants to get rid of GOD when he becomes a pain in there back side

    Even idols must bow before Him! God doesn’t share His presence with false gods or idols. When He is truly God in our lives, there is no room for other gods. We cannot crowd our hearts and lives with things we pay more attention to than Him; He requires all the space we have!

    Exodus 34:14 For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:

  7. Who’s the fish in our lives? The fish adapts to its surrounding and circumstances. It changes what it eats and how it sleeps constantly to adapt to its surroundings. False gods or idols will adapt to whatever circumstance your in. They will fit right in at the right time so that you can’t even see them sometimes. Our God never changes he is always the same. Set our God in front of the idol in your life and see how long the idol last!

  8. v4 ” Only the stump of Dagon was left to him”
    v5 therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon’s house tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.

    GOD IS INDESCRIBABLE!!!
    Don’t even try to explain HIM
    HE ALONE WILL ALWAYS BE GOD.!!!

    Then the lords of the Philistines gathered them together for to offer a great sacrifice unto Dagon their god, and to rejoice: for they said, Our god hath delivered Samson our enemy into our hand.

    So this is the same so called “god” they worship when Samson allowed sin into his life? Now they have defeated the Israelite’s, took the ark of God but you get scared and run? I’m a little confused.

    Reminds me of being in High School and watching my brother play football. It was bad to loose a game but to loose a homecoming game on your own field was the worse.

    I’m reading this chapter and I think to myself what shame they must feel, what a slap in the face. They have all this confidence because they just beat the Israelite’s in battle and now God is destroying their God right before their eyes, piece by piece.

    Then they try to give it away and no one will take the ark so they have to return it to it’s rightful place. “You touch it, you put it back” lesson learned.

    I find joy in knowing that if I am every in a situation where I am walking in the way of the Lord and they enemy tries to hold me captive I can still have peace. For I know that his spirit is in me and all I have to do is sit back and watch him fight my battle. My God will take vengeance on my enemy and he will take his hands off me and put me back where I belong.

    Psalm 105:15
    “Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.”

    • I like that football type analogy. It’s like God was showing them, “just because My people are out of line doesn’t mean you won’t have to still deal with Me.” He won’t share His glory; makes me winder if He chose to take Israel temporarily out of the equation of victory partly because they would have tried to take His glory had they remained victorious.

  10. THE POWER OF GOD IS REVEALED BY FALLEN IDOLS

    4 And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.

    The Philistines (Flesh/Carnality) brought the representation of GOD to Ashdod (meaning powerful) like it was some sort of magic wand, only to realize that it was very powerful, but not in the way they thought. We read here for the second chapter in a row, flesh attempting to to use the Presence of GOD for an idol.

    However unique, even when GOD is “used” as an idol all other idols fall down and worship him.

    This chapter reveals how ignorant it is to trust in idols: lucky charms, horrorscopes, palm readers.

    ***DANGER – The use of idols is hazardous to your health -and smote them with emerods – (tumors and hemorrhoids).

    THE POWER OF GOD IS REVEALED IN OUR LIVES BY FALLEN IDOLS.

    The “things” we used to rely on are no longer important; all that really matters is that the presence of GOD in present in our lives.

    • The problem GOD had with Dagon was its appearance. It is described as part fish/part man. This goes against GOD’s creative order.

      God made fish for the sea and man for the earth. In a similar comparison, I believe GOD sees the same thing when men and women cross dress. He created man to look like a man and woman to look like a woman.

      Do not be deceived in the last days. What looks like it is standing WILL fall when it comes into the PRESENCE OF GOD.

      • Praise God, you hit it right on the nose, people go through life deceived by the supposed tolerance of this world. I will not tolerate immorality no matter how is dressed. When you begin to accept things of this world as normal you have fallen into deceitfulness and ALL that is not of God will FALL!!!

    I am reminded of some scriptures:

    For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. (Romans 14:11 KJV)

    Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. (James 2:19 KJV)

    At the end of the day, Jesus was and is and always will be Lord of lords and King of kings. It was nothing to God to cast down the devil from heaven, and there is nothing of the spirit realm or natural that can conquer Him or even give Him a run for His money.

    This chapter shows the awesome self-control and power of God in how He smote the Philistines with such restraint and carefulness. He could have killed them all in one shot but He gave place for them to repent, and just as we see with Dagon falling one day before being symbolically dismembered the next, we can see degrees of judgement coming before it seems any death hits. Much can be taken from this!

    —– Didn’t the philistines learn their lesson when it comes to mess with the God of Israel?dont’t they remember what happend to a bunch of them whenever they took Samson? Anyways…….

    “Thank you God” for such and such…..and at the same time they have a manmade wool poking thing hanging on their door suppousley for good luck,and not to face money problems….
    Same people who says:we love God , but yet have personal idols……Now,it’s my turn to search my heart and ask God to cleanse me from the insideout(can not affOrd to be ignorant)

  13. When I picture Dagon I always pictured a really ugly fish headed man thing and it always amazes me that people would worship something so grotesque. Then reading pastors blog today I realized I had it backwards because immediately the term mermaid came to mind. That makes more sense to me. People have been worshipping, dreaming of, and imagining themselves to be mermaids for centuries. They even have a style of dress and skirt called mermaid and its very popular. Its amazing how something so offensive to God can infiltrate society practically unnoticed and made to seem so innocent at that thanks to disney. I typed Dagon into google images on my phone and he looks strikingly like king triton from the little mermaid. Dagon also is a demon character in a video game and the title of a horror movie. Just seeing all of that shows me that it is not only wise but imperative to becareful what comes into our homes.

    More importantly I believe when God is brought into a house then things will be revealed for what they are in our lives. When we choose to read the Bible and grow in God then we learn more of His likes and dislikes and we can’t help but be purged. I think God will give us revelation of things in our lives to see what we choose: the thing we have always known to be ok or God.

    The philistines chose what they always knew even after seeing God was more powerful and awesome than their god. Let’s not let the allure of the world draw us back from the splendor of God.

  14. Isaiah 45:23 I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.

    Romans 14:11For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.

  15. Exodus 20:3……”Thou shalt have no other gods before me”.

    Phillipians 2:10…. “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;”

    Everything and everyone will bow down to the One True God!

      You can compare this passage with the following scriptures…

      Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. (1 Corinthians 11:27-31 KJV)

  17. Those other gods, that people tend to rely on. Dagon was the Philistines main god, but their god fail to deliver anything. He kept falling over and over, just like our little gods we put before us. Our little idols/gods, keep failing us each and everyday.

    The foolishness of having idols…
    Isaiah 44 NLT 9 How foolish are those who manufacture idols.
    These prized objects are really worthless. The people who worship idols don’t know this, so they are all put to shame.
    10 Who but a fool would make his own god—
    an idol that cannot help him one bit?
    11 All who worship idols will be disgraced
    along with all these craftsmen—mere humans—
    who claim they can make a god.
    They may all stand together,
    but they will stand in terror and shame.

    Jesus is our true and only God.
    Isaiah 44:8 Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.

  18. Wow look at the number of times the ark of the God of ISRAEL WAS sent aeay and they still did nt see the true God. Even now there are people who dont see God but they beleive that the god that is in their heart is He. God please foregive me for not seeing you when you first called me. I will search my heart daily to ensure that the one and true God dwells in me. I will seek your face everyday/all day. I cant make it without the one and only God.

  19. In this scripture, it is clear that not just anyone can carry or keep the ark of God. Especially, not Non-believers or men that worship foreign Gods. God will keep his word, and keep his covenant. He will make Kings or Dignataries bow before him. The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, will not bow to man. But, every knee will bow, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the Glory of God the Father. “Written” The Father, The Word, and The Holy Spirit, in these three are one. “One God”, for his word is precious to him, and to us. Without it, how can we survive, in this perilous times, filled with pestilance, famine, and war. Got a word this morning in prayer, Divide and Conquer Satan’s Kingdom. Jesus said, if Satan’s Kingdom is divided it will not stand. So, let’s divide his Kingdom, and make it fall, for it doesn’t have a solid rock to stand upon, like we do. Jesus Christ, is the solid rock I stand, and another King said, “David”, not the King of Kings, but David said;

    Psalm 27:5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.

    4And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.

    Remember, God left his own trophy…not a sword of Goliath, but a stump! Remember “Sunday Night”? You will bow, and it’s best to go ahead and bow now with love, than at Judgement later. He will not make you Praise Him, Love Him, or even Obey Him, but you will bow and serve one or the other, choose ye, whom you will serve. I choose Christ Jesus, it’s about right standing with God, and having your sins cleansed, and being saved. Go ahead surrender today, and you’ll see he is Love……..

    That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

    For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.

    4. Ezekiel 21:7
    And it shall be, when they say unto thee, Wherefore sighest thou? that thou shalt answer, For the tidings; because it cometh: and every heart shall melt, and all hands shall be feeble, and every spirit shall faint, and all knees shall be weak as water: behold, it cometh, and shall be brought to pass, saith the Lord GOD.

    My question is are you thirsty for more? Are you hungry for more?

    Bread, Wine, Living Waters, New Oil, Fresh Annoting, New Covenant, and he is the Bread of Life.

    Matthew 4:4
    But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

  20. I had another thought:

    The idol Dagon was likely carved from wood or stone.

    The bible talks about how nature praises God by just existing in several instances.

    Maybe the very nature of what was made into an idol, be it stone or wood, recognized it was nothing and recognized who was in control thus falling upon its “face”
    Just a thought.

    I remember having a conversation with a good friend once and she was telling me that there was a test done at some time. Scientist or whoever took atheists and had them go through a lie detector test and asked them if there was a God. It showed they were lying when they said no. She said isn’t that crazy how the very fiber of our being knows there is a God despite what we may believe in our head?

    Despite what people say or think, every knee will bow and every tongue confess Jesus is God.

The Phillistines had just won a battle that they had to muster up all their courage to fight because of the great cry of encouragement the Israeli people had shouted when the ark was brought into the second day of that battle-BUT-the Phillistines didn’t get to rejoice but a few hours because the God of the Israelites pulled down their god to it’s proper place: fallen, defeated, it’s hands cut off and lying prostrate on the ground before the One True God! Praise God!

This chapter illustrates protection. “Psalm 91:9-10 Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.” The Lord will protect his; therefore all should strive to be his. May the good Lord bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

    Will the real God, please stand up? This chapter reminds me of two other illustrations. One, when the prophets of Baal called upon their gods to answer by fire, but of course a god that is not real, cannot answer by fire, so when the true, living God answered by fire, He not only sent fire, but consumed all the water put out to ensure that He was real.

    The other illustration is a more modern one. There are many ministers proclaiming “truth” with sign and wonders, but the day will come when the Lord will judge, and His word declares there will be some that will say, Lord, I did this in your name, and I did that in your name, but they are lacking the true resurrection power from the true living God, and therefore they will hear, Depart from me, I never knew you.

    Lord help us to discern truth from deception.

  25. How to find the Dagons in our lives

    This chapter stresses the importance of getting your priorities in the right place. Seeking God first and his righteousness ( Matthew 6:33) will allow “the light” to shine into our lives to expose the dagons or idols that have us in bondage.

    And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands. (Acts 12:7 KJV)

  26. Playing with Fire!

    3And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the LORD. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.

    God will try to get your attention with something small first. But after , if you dont get it, than look out for God. Many times I have said ,” Well, God understands. I am only human and as such I do fall.” I think as Bro.Smith would put it. Thats Ignoent! When I read this I thought to myself ,how many times have I put thing in front of God. What have I put in my life before God and His Word, to say this is more important,yet I have God in my life so I’ll be blessed. We do serve a jealious God ,and He is not one to put up with us forever. There is a time in everyones life that their parents say I love you enough to allow this to happen to you so you can learnfrom this. Thank God for parents who have taught me to live right for God and to seek His will for my life and to do it.

      He is the King of kings and Lord of lords! And the only Ruler!

  28. Every knee shall bow…..

    This includes false God’s as well. Our God is not the author of confusion, he is the one and only true God. Every false God will bow down before the ONE true God. God gave a warning fall first, but when they did not heed, he left them with a stump. Don’t be left with a stump, heed the voice of God and obey his word.

  30. Jesus is the one and only, there’s none other that can compare to Him…false idols will fall sooner or later, but there’s one that will always stay high n mighty forever 🙂

  31. This chapter reveals to us once again that there is no God like ours. He reigns from heaven above.

    And he said, LORD God of Israel, there is no God like thee, in heaven above, or on earth beneath, who keepest covenant and mercy with thy servants that walk before thee with all their heart: -1 Kings 8:23

    Idols will always fall before the Lord because they are the creations of men.

  32. Verse 4 is what sticks out to me the most. The illustration of the ligaments being chopped off reminds me of how Pastor preaches that the weak will be cut off from the body. When you don’t need a certain something/someone in your life that has possibly become an idol to you it needs to be chopped off.

      – So true. And if we don’t chop it off it can become a pain in our back side.

  33. Here we see how God views Idols. God drops them to his feet and cuts off their hands and head! So should we drop all of our idols at the feet of Jesus and cut of f anything in our lives thats not pleasing to him so that we can serve him with all our hearts.

  34. I suppose the Philistines thought they could toss Isreal’s God amongst their god Dagon. Like a collectable barbie doll or something. Once they feared Him, but now they lose respect for Israel and their God because they have won the battle against them and stolen their ark. At first they were afraid that all the shouting from the crowd of Israelites soldiers would defeat them, so what happened. You can bring a lion into your home to be a pet, but soon enough you will be devoured. The little statue was a bit of warning, “I stand alone, and my children are in Isreal, more stuff is going to go bad until you send me there.” Why would you seperate a lion from her cubs, even though they might be knot-headed

  35. It is funny that the people said to take it back where it came from. It makes you wonder a little as to why they took it in the first place. After they got the Ark back where ever they wanted it distruction followed because it was not taken care of the way God intended it to be.

    emerods are tumors–that means that God put tumor in their private areas because they were carrying the ark around
