1 Samuel 6

1And the ark of the LORD was in the country of the Philistines seven months.

2And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of the LORD? tell us wherewith we shall send it to his place.

3And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a trespass offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.

4Then said they, What shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to him? They answered, Five golden emerods, and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines: for one plague was on you all, and on your lords.

5Wherefore ye shall make images of your emerods, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel: peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land.

6Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? when he had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed?

7Now therefore make a new cart, and take two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them:

8And take the ark of the LORD, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a trespass offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go.

9And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Bethshemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us: it was a chance that happened to us.

10And the men did so; and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home:

11And they laid the ark of the LORD upon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their emerods.

12And the kine took the straight way to the way of Bethshemesh, and went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Bethshemesh.

13And they of Bethshemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley: and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it.

14And the cart came into the field of Joshua, a Bethshemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they clave the wood of the cart, and offered the kine a burnt offering unto the LORD.

15And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD, and the coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Bethshemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto the LORD.

16And when the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day.

17And these are the golden emerods which the Philistines returned for a trespass offering unto the LORD; for Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Askelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one;

18And the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fenced cities, and of country villages, even unto the great stone of Abel, whereon they set down the ark of the LORD: which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua, the Bethshemite.

19And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the LORD had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.

20And the men of Bethshemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy LORD God? and to whom shall he go up from us?

21And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kirjathjearim, saying, The Philistines have brought again the ark of the LORD; come ye down, and fetch it up to you.

  1. What God Holds Precious
    1 Sa 6:19-7:1

    Obedience
For many years the ark of the covenant has been housed behind a veil, seen only by the high priest once a year. Now here it is, in front of common people! Yet, instead of treating the ark with the honor it deserves, these people gratify their curiosity, prying into the holy things reserved by God. God has told his people not to touch, or even look on the ark (Nu 4:15,20). This reminds me of Eve in Gen 3:3:
3But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. 6And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

    His Children
The people of Beth Shemesh disregard these commands, and 70 men perish. I wonder if ties into the 70 years that they spend exiled in Babylon? humm.. This may seem like a stiff penalty, but the ark represents the manifestation of God’s holiness and presence among the Israelites. Their is simply no excuse to say you didnt know that the item in front of them was the ark of the covenant, we can choose to be ignorant, but that curiosity and folly with end in death. Just like ignoring the Gospel. By protecting the ark, God is protecting his honor and holiness. Something that we can all learn from as Christians (to be like Christ) and preserve, protect, honor the Holy Spirit which lives within us today (God manifested in us) because our mind, body heart and soul is literally his ark used as a vessel to spread the Word and live in His holiness.

  2. 6 Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? when he had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed?

It is important that we do not forget ALL that God has done for us, so in the same way our adversaries will not forget what God has done against them for our sake. God will punish our enemies and anyone that will stand against His will.

Who are the enemies of God??? His definition is simple for in Luke 11:23 His word says: “He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.” So search within yourselves and make sure that you are a gathereth and not a scattereth.

    Who is Like the Lord

19And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD..

God is Holy, it wasn’t God’s fault the people didn’t know the laws of God and therefore had to pour out judgement upon them.

    Examples

34 A golden bell and a pomegranate, a golden bell and a pomegranate, upon the hem of the robe round about.

35 And it shall be upon Aaron to minister: and his sound shall be heard when he goeth in unto the holy place before the LORD, and when he cometh out, that he die not

  4. Isn’t it ironic…
    (A) the mice obeyed God and marred the land;
    (B) the cows obeyed God and took the ark straight to Bethshemesh without returning to their calves or wandering left or right even to eat, although they had never pulled a cart
    (C) the men who knew the laws of God and the ark disobeyed them and opened the ark!

iPray that I don’t allow ignorant animals to become more obedient to God than I am!!

    1Samuel 15:22
And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

  5. TWISTED DOCTRINES AND MISGUIDED PERCEPTION

7 Now therefore make a new cart, and take two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them:
8 And take the ark of the LORD, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a trespass offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go.

The Philistines take counsel from witches, concerning the things of GOD?

How often we see this today, when people do not understand GOD and what he is doing, they ask people that do not understand GOD or what he is doing. They come up with some twisted idea and attempt to make a doctrine of it. Bringing in the presence of the LORD.

    The Law says:
Exodus 25:14 And thou shalt put the staves into the rings by the sides of the ark, that the ark may be borne with them.

The ark is to be carried by the priests, but these magicians say put it on a cart and have a couple of heifers pull it and they get by with it. However, when David attempted to put it on a new cart in 2Samuel 6 Uzzah died as a result of it. Here we have an example of the church trying to do what the world does and get by with it.

GOD takes his Kingdom very serious! TWISTED DOCTRINES may work for the world but GOD will never accept it for HIS Church. MISGUIDED PERCEPTIONS are that when we see people in the world get by with something, we think the Church should do it as well.

***Smoke, Lights and Music (New Cart) will not bring the presence of LORD (They will bring excitement). Prayer, Submission and Worship will bring the presence of the LORD.

  6. This chapter is amazing!
1 The philistines got repented and they paid the redemption, with gold but they have to put some shame on them because they had to recognized publicly their sin and their punishment making emerods and mice of gold!
Showing their sin, but repentance too.
2 In other hand (the Christians) the Bet-semes people, were punished because they rejoice about the glory of God returning, but they thought they have holiness enough and right to look inside of the Ark.
We have to be careful about our actions and thoughts because sometimes people from world fear more God than Us.
Lord have mercy and bless us changing our lives indeed!

  7. 6Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? when he had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed?

I believe this is why people backslid they have forgotten what God has done for them, where God brought them from. When we are having bad days and we think of throwing in the towel we need to remember where God has brought us from and go back to the day that we received the Holy Ghost. Its as sweet and strong today as it was the day we received the Holy Ghost. God is the same yesterday, today and forever…

  8. 6:1,2 When the ark of Lord had been in Philistine territory seven months, the Philistines called for the priests and the deviners and said,
“What shall we do with the ark of the Lord?Tell
Us how we should send it back to it’s place”
—-Deut18:11,12 Or cast spells,or who is a medium or spirit ism or who consults the dead.
—- Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord, and because these detestable practices the Lord your God will drive you out those nations before you.You must be blameless before the Lord your God.
Stay away from these tipe of people…..
6:6 Why do you harden your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh did?when he treated them harshley did they not send the Israelites out so they could go on their way?
—–it’s funny and sad on how they can be so ignorant and so dead in sin,but at the same time they know and recognize the power and the sovereign of the God of Israel….
6:19 But God struck down some of them of Beth Shemesh, putting seventy of them to death because they had looked into the ark of the Lord.the people mourned because of the heavy blow the Lord had dealt them.
We must have respect of all the things of God,and. Of stick our nose and his business,we must learn to wait upon the Lord and not stick our nose in his business ….
They didn’t respect the ark,we must respect our pun bodies, wich is the temple of God,we must show respect for the place were we go worship him, because we’re two or three gather in his name, there he is.

  9. 16 And when the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day.

When I read this it reminded me of how some people see God work greatly and have experienced what the presence of God can do; yet they continue to return their own life.

  10. The Philistines understood the power of God obviously, because they treated the ark with what they thought was respect. They new the power so they wanted it out of their camp.

Isn’t this the way that the world today treats God?

We invite people to Church and they say things like “I know I probably should go but its just not for me” or “God doesn’t care if you go to Church or pray just as long as you know he is real”

These guys new he was real after he destroyed them.

If they know the power of God and understand that he is greater than their gods, why would they continue to worship their gods? Why wouldn’t they put their gods away and worship the one God who is most powerful?

The answer is simply the power of tradition.

How many times have we tried to witness to someone from a denominational church and them say “I understand what your saying and I know that’s in the Bible but that’s not the way my church has always done things”? If you know its the truth then why deny it?

    ????????

    2Timothy 3:5-7
Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

  11. 9and see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Bethshemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us: it was a chance that happened to us.

Even though the philistines knew it was God they were still willing to call the extraordinary events coincidence. How often does the world see miracles, signs, or wonders and shrug it off as happening by chance? We live in a world that tries to do everything to denounce God, some people would rather believe we came from monkeys and some believe that nothing exploded and just happened to create everything (big bang theory) rather than to acknowledge a superior being being responsible for it all. Some people will fight to not see the truth, they choose to be blinded and have scales on their eyes. Pray for them but don’t fight them, there are people willing to be saved so move on 🙂

  12. A simple thought.

6Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? when he had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed?

Lord, make my heart one out of flesh ,and not of rock. Allow my heart to be modeled as you see fit to.

  13. 19And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the LORD had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.

When God’s judgement was poured out on their act of looking inside the ark, it showed they didn’t know God’s word, so in the end, they reject his presence and send the ark to to the poeple of Kirjathjearim. But because they had Levites there, they had people in place that should have been able to have inquired of the Lord as to why he had wrath on them! then they could have repented, learned the correct approach to God, and been blessed.

When people don’t understand God’s law and his ways, they reject him -esp if he doesn’t measure up to their pre-conceived ideas. They allow what their denomination says to cloud their understanding. They do not want anything to do with something that is outside their own personal faith.

I pray the Lord pour out on this world a hunger and thirst for more of him and that they would not be satisfied with the measure of understanding & learning that they do have. We need a world wide revival! Pour it out Lord!

  14. iLove to Eat the Word for Lunch

    “It’s Not God’s Fault”

19And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD

We must read and understand the Word of God. What we don’t know can hurt us.

  15. Its when people dont seek council from the man of God when the hearts become hard and we give up. God does not want us to give up but finish the race bt one persin cant do it, it will take all of us to help each other. Reading, praying and hearing the word all are apart of keeping us focused on who God is…

  16. What memories do your enemies have of the Lord?

Why then do you harden your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? When He had done wonders and made a mock of them, did they not let the people go, and they departed? (1 Samuel 6:6 AMP)

Even our enemies can testify of our Great and Mighty God.

  17. 6 Don’t be stubborn and rebellious as Pharaoh and the Egyptians were. By the time God was finished with them, they were eager to let Israel go.

Our generation has fallen into a spirit of stubborness and rebellion. So many are quick to rebell against authority and say ‘NO’ just because. Our generation does not have a steadfast relation with God, and it shows. Let us continue to teach others and be the light of God!

Psalms 78:8 And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.

  18. 19And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the LORD had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.

In a move that violated the law and sanctity of the ark, the men of Bethshemesh lost their lives. Looking into the ark was like uncovering nakedness. There was no semblance of a relationship with God, and so it was much like rape.

We must dive into a close, deep relationship with God if we want to experience the mysteries that God wants to reveal to us.

  19. GOD or Chance
v9 And see. if it goeth up by the way of his own cost to Beth she- mesh ,then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us; it was a chance that happened to us.

As sure as HE IS GOD we can count on HIM to guide us in decisions great or small
“The steps of a good man are ordered by GOD”

We receive guidance through prayer,His Word and HIS SPIRIT. . If we start seeking for answers, the LORD will lead us.
The devil has no power over JESUS NAME.
GOD is a Holy GOD and the beginning of all holiness is how close you are to GOD and obeying GOD from the heart starts with a relationship with GOD.
It doesn’t matter to the all Mighty GOD who we are.
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with my eye.
    Psalm 32:8
Be filled and led by HIS SPIRIT.

HE is not a respecter of persons.

  20. Vs 3 even the witches and the preists of the Philistines understood that it would take a sacrifice to get away from the curse that had beset them. Why is it today that we think that we can come before the king of kings with no sacrifice and expect Him to bend over backwards and give us all we can hope to ask for????

  21. The unbeliever hasn’t a clue. Some you can talk to until your red in the face. And what do you get ? Red in the face. They took the ark and now they are fearful of it. Just like sin we should have left it alone!

  22. iLove to eat the Word for Supper

(1 Samuel 6:21) And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kirjathjearim, saying, The Philistines have brought again the ark of the LORD; come ye down, and fetch it up to you.

  23. The presence of the Lord cannot be ushered into the lives of people through the devices of men, only by being obedient to the word of God can we experience that place only the high priest was allowed to enter into.

And thou shalt put the mercy seat upon the ark of the testimony in the most holy place. -Exodus 26:34

But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people: -Hebrews 9:7

  24. 3And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a trespass offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.

  25. The Philistines were severly punished by the Lord for taking the ark of God. They weren’t sure if it was the ark of God that was causing deaths to their people. Philistines cried out and decided to send the ark of God back to it’s place with guilt offerings hoping god would heal them and stop the plagues. The priests and diviners were aware of the mighty power the Lord had over Pharaoh and the Egyptians and didn’t want the same happening to them.

Scripture says the Philistines honored the Lord of Israel by sending the ark of the Lord back with guilt offerings. I see how this is the form of repentance and asking for mercy.

God is for us when we are obedient which in this case there was rebellion and stubborness. God never honors it, Lord help me to honor you always.

  26. Those calves were led straight by God to Bethshemesha and brought the ark back to its rightful owners. This is an amazing example of how Gods will must be done regardless of who tries to stop it.the enemies of God thought they could steal God Blessing from his people but God and the will of God would not permit it.

  27. 13And they of Bethshemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley: and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it.

These harvest laborers rejoiced to see something symbolic as victory return. The question we must ask is, will we be content with just rejoicing over victory or will we be willing to get our hands dirty and sacrifice and do the work behind the scenes to help receive it to deliver it to many? Like Bro Bower preached, it’s when we get sick of just praying with souls that others have won that we’ll go out and start being soul winners ourselves. It’s one thing to build on a foundation another was used to lay, but it’s another thing to be used in breaking ground and in the establishment of a foundation.

Where no oxen are, the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox. (Proverbs 14:4 KJV)

  28. 1 Samuel 6:12 KJV

And the kine took the straight way to the way of Beth–shemesh, and went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Beth–shemesh.

    God will use any vessel.

  29. This chapter illustrates reverence. “And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the LORD had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.” All can truly say we are fortunate to live under Grace and not under the Law; however there is coming a day. May the good Lord bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  30. Verse 3 in the CEV reads….”Don’t send it back without a gift,” the priests and fortunetellers answered. “Send along something to Israel’s God to make up for taking the chest in the first place. Then you will be healed, and you will find out why the Lord was causing you so much trouble.” Many people today think they can makeup for or do things to replace their disobedience. No matter how many “good things” that you think you do; nothing can replace repentance.

  31. They realized what they were doing was wrong and they gave a trespasses offering. The trespass was that they took the ark and moved it out of its rightful place. They moved it the way they wanted, and not the way that God instructed.

  32. They realized what they were doing was wrong and they gave a trespasses offering. The trespass was that they took the ark and moved it out of its rightful place. They moved it the way they wanted, and not the way that God instructed.
