1 Samuel 7

1And the men of Kirjathjearim came, and fetched up the ark of the LORD, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the LORD.

2And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjathjearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after the LORD.

3And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.

4Then the children of Israel did put away Baalim and Ashtaroth, and served the LORD only.

5And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you unto the LORD.

6And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured it out before the LORD, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have sinned against the LORD. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh.

7And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.

8And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.

9And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the LORD: and Samuel cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD heard him.

10And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel.

11And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Bethcar.

12Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.

13So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the coast of Israel: and the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.

14And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even unto Gath; and the coasts thereof did Israel deliver out of the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.

15And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.

16And he went from year to year in circuit to Bethel, and Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged Israel in all those places.

17And his return was to Ramah; for there was his house; and there he judged Israel; and there he built an altar unto the LORD.

  1. Lights, Camera, Action

This chapter shows the importance of the role of Pastor in ours lives and importance of knowing our role and place. The voice of the Pastor will direct us to the right path. And its only when we “the church” come together as one that the Lord can begin to flow.
This reminds me of high school marching band. We started basic training/boot camp a month before school started and once school started we were there 1-2 hours before school even started practicing for our half time shows and UIL and some times even stayed after school. Our band director made sure we always had unity, were marching in step, and in our right spot to build a formation. He would make banners above the bandhall doors that would say ” There’s no I in team” with a big “We are #1” and we had to look at that banner every time we walked in and jump up and slap the banner or we couldn’t come in for practice. We couldn’t have anyone out sick or no show because that would leave a gap in our formations and points would be deducted from our score. We had to work as one band, move as one band, play in harmony as one band. And because we were trained that we were one band we never hesitated to invest time with a fellow band member that needed help, or quickly defuse arguments and as result we received #1’s at UIL.

These verses sum it all up

    Col. 3:12-17
    12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

We are the body let’s work in harmony. Lets teach each other, reprove gently, forgive each other just as Christ has forgiven us. Above all let’s have a brotherly love for one another. There’s no “I” in team!

    “We will stand”
Sometimes it’s hard for me to understand why we pull away from each other so easily even though were all walkin’ the same road Yet we build dividing walls between our brothers and ourselves, but I, I don’t care What label you may wear, if you believe in Jesus You belong with me, the bond we share And all I care to see it will change the world forever if you will join with me, join and sing, sing…

Chorus: You’re my brother you’re my sister so take me by the hand Together we will work until He comes There’s no foe that can defeat us if we’re walkin’ side by side As long as there is Love We will stand

The day will come that we will be as one and with a mighty voice together We will all proclaim that Jesus, Jesus is King It will echo through the earth it will shake the nations And the world will see And they will see

    • AMEN Sis: We as a church should never allow the spirit of strife to enter between one another, but it seems to happen every time we are about to break through a big stronghold. We need to recognize it and rebuke it so we can break through.

  2. Poured Out
    1 Sa 7:6

The people are sorry. They “mourned and sought after the Lord” (1 Sa 7:2). It may seem strange to us, but in Biblical time, custom encouraged vivid expressions of grief. In this passage, the people’s mourning leads to acts of fasting, confession and the pouring out of water. These first two acts are somewhat familiar to us, but why pour out water? To the Israelites is symbolic to the pouring out of their hearts before God. It is a sign that they have come to the end of their own resources. Our displays of repentance may not be as animated, but when we too, are willing to pour out everything to God- with no hope of collectiong it back- God is faithful to answer (vs 9). And he usually answers in a greater way then we could ever imagine, as he did with the Israelites (vs 10-11).

  3. 3 And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.

What was required then it is still required now. The word of God NEVER changes, so put away the strange gods: the car that you need to wash every day, the game you need to play or watch, the girlfriend/boyfriend that gets upset every time you need to go to church, the friend that tries to pull you out of church, facebook, twitter, etc, ANYTHING that its taking God’s place in your life and heart.

Luke 10:27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.

HE HAS TO BE FIRST!!! First in your heart, in your soul, strength, and mind. If your mind drifts to everything you have to do then bring it back to Him, He will guide you and everything will get done. Every step physically and spiritually should take you closer to Him.

Matt 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

The majority of people will quote this verse & don’t even realize that is not only His Kingdom that you must seek but His Righteousness. It is a combination deal. You can’t have one without the other.

The Hebrew word for righteousness is tseh’-dek, tzedek, Gesenius’s Strong’s Concordance:6664—righteous, integrity, equity, justice, straightness. The root of tseh’-dek is tsaw-dak’, Gesenius’s Strong:6663—upright, just, straight, innocent, true, sincere. It is best understood as the product of upright, moral action in accordance with some form of divine plan.

I like the last part the “moral action in accordance with some form of divine plan,” Who’s divine plan, HIS, how do you get His plan, THE BIBLE, His divine word, follow it, learned it, EAT IT, never depart from it.

The Battle Belongs to the Lord

(Proverbs 16:6) By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.

(Proverbs 16:7) When a man’s ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.

  5. 12. Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.

Eben ezer = The Stone of Help

This reminds me of those old songs, “I call Him Jesus my Rock” and “I go to the Rock” I am so thankful that we have a Rock we can go to that is strong and never-changing. He is the same from before time began until after time ends and is able to defeat the “Philistines” in our lives.

    Ephesians 2:19, 20
    Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
    And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

    Psalms 90:2-4
Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

Thou turnest man to destruction; and sayest, Return, ye children of men.

For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.

  7. We as the flock have a choice to make. Either we can let the Pastor do his job and we do ours with out strife or we can try to do it all ourselves and keep getting beat up by the Philistines.

And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the
LORD our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.

Pastor doesn’t have to go to a job and put on a nail pouch each day. He goes to the Lord more than all of us because that is his job just like Samuel. I pray that he not cease crying out for us. The biggest reason all of us are doing so well right now is because of his heart and how much time he spends with the Lord petitioning for us.

People have been asking me for a few months how is it that I’m so blessed and I have answered in many different ways. One way is that lately I’ve told them about invoking the spirit of Goshen upon my family every morning. Before that I told them that it was because I started being faithful in my tithes and offerings where i had not been before. Before that i told them that I have put my whole life into my business and this financial blessing comes with great sacrifice from my family…….

Alll these things are true but, I had a word from the lord last night on the way home from Church.

The main reason Im doing so well is that Im submitted to my Pastor.
Even when i completely disagree with what he says, I do it anyway and I have found joy in that now. All that pride i used to have has seemed to just dissapear in this submission. I never thought i would be in this position, but now i wouldnt have it any other way.

And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.

Pastor, I say to you, Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us. I covet your prayers and I am completly thankful for your passion for us and this city. I feel like i have been snatched out of the fire by this Church. Thank you all.

  8. 3And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.

I find Samuels choice of word very interesting here. “If Ye do return unto God” he’s saying I can not open you up and look at your heart but God can and a good indicator of true repentance is that you will put away your gods, prepare your hearts, and serve Him.

In life there are storms we must go through in order to brinh us into a level of perfection but some are to correct us. When we go through those correcting storms we must evaluate our lives and take Samuels advise by following the process of true repentance, and just as God came and delivered them He will come help us out of our storm.

Thank you Lord for the storm.

  9. God will help us fight our battles if we will only ask, instead of struggling to do it on our own.He is our Deliverer from our battles and the storms of life!!Thank you Lord for always being there for me to lean on.

  10. V.3 And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, if ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and HE WILL deliver you out of the hand of the Philistine. In Exodus God gave Israel Ten Commandments to live by. And in it, it says ” I the LORD thy GOD am a Jealous. GOD. As the Scripture says prepare your hearts unto the Lord, serve him only! As a body in Christ We the POFW can do this!

Our God is an Awesome God

10And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel.

The challenges and of life are so easy for God.

  12. Verse 7-10 says that they were smitten of God .At first I thought that meant they were slain by God. Actually they were caught off guard and became so confused and fearfull that Israel easily won the victory in battle. withGods support we will always have the victory so we need to keep Him in the forefront of our walk and life! Samuel continued to pray while Israel prepared for battle!!

  13. Verse 9 And Samuel cried unto the Lord and God heard him… God honored the sacrifice of Samuel and blessed the Israelites with a victory over the philistines. This shows us that even if we mess up if we are willing to sacrifice and ask for His forgivness God is faithful and just to forgive us.

  14. TURNING POINT

12 Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.

GOD is calling HIS church to return to HIM in these last days. There are some undeniable steps in returning:

3 And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.

    *HEAR the man of GOD
    *DISPOSE of idols
*BELIEVE in the Promises of GOD

5 And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you unto the LORD.

    *WALK and WORK in UNITY
    *ALLOW someone to HELP you

6 And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured it out before the LORD, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have sinned against the LORD. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh.

9 And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the LORD: and Samuel cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD heard him.

    *OFFER Sacrifices unto the LORD
    *ALLOW Correction
    *CRY unto the LORD

12 Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.

Every victorious child of GOD has a STONE a “TURNING POINT” in their life. A place of sacrifice, battle and victory.

  15. 9And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the LORD: and Samuel cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD heard him.
10And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel.

Maybe we are the last cry for our city. Maybe you’re that last straw for someone to come to church. Maybe they’re asking God for you to come in and talk to them one more time and ask them to come to church with you. What would happen if we would live outreach, and not let it just be a once a week thing that you do on saturdays. What would happen if we would live life for God and not yourselves.

Here are many questions that I have often wondered about, and then in prayer I got an answer. Why don’t I cry for my city? Why don’t I talk to that person at the store? Why can’t I live Outreach and be a light for God everywhere that I go? We make life out what it is, so I motion that I will do better at making new friends and outreach to those that are hurting and are CRYING out for help. I know a God that has helped me in life and in others too.

  16. Samual cried out to God for the children of israel after he told them to put away their strabge gods. God wants all of us and He will always send a man or woman with greater faith to show us what we must do, samual was that man for israel and pastor is that man for pofw. We have to be willing to hear the instruction and be willing to follow it. We are nt perfect bt God wants us to try and try again.

  17. This chapter illustrates submission. “And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines. And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the LORD: and Samuel cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD heard him. And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel.” This is a great example of why one should submit and obey, for we never know when we too will face the Philistines. May the good Lord bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  18. When Israel decided to return to God and serve him only as Samuel said to do, then gathered to fast repent, it made the enemy uncomfortable! They were coming together in unity and Satan certainly does not want God’s people in unity. So remembering their last victory over the Israelites even when they had the ark before them, they decide to come immediately and put an end to this gathering. However, God, who saw they had put away the idols and truly returned to serve him-stepped in immediately- and with his thundering, let the Phillistines know that he was with them. No doubt the Phillistines were the one who were afraid this time which made it easy for Israel to gather courage and defeat them! Seek him with your whole heart!

  19. Verse 3 in the MSG reads….”Then Samuel addressed the house of Israel: “If you are truly serious about coming back to God, clean house. Get rid of the foreign gods and fertility goddesses, ground yourselves firmly in God, worship him and him alone, and he’ll save you from Philistine oppression.” We need to do a little bit of “Spring Cleaning” and get rid of all those things that are keeping us from doing his will.

  20. 2And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjathjearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after the LORD.

3And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.

Another example of Gods jealousy. The Israelite’s lamented after the LORD but they still had strange gods among them. It wasnt until after they removed the false gods from them and served God with their whole heart and Samuel prayed for them that God showed out for them once again.

    Deuteronomy 14Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you;

15(For the LORD thy God is a jealous God among you) lest the anger of the LORD thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth.

16Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God, as ye tempted him in Massah.

  21. v6 “We have sinned against the LORD.”

Like Isaiah says, ” Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am A man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips”
    Isaiah 6:5
The closer we get to the GOOD LORD the less worthy we feel of HIS nearness, presence and
    HIS GLORY.

“Just Because You Go to Church and Repent, Doesn’t mean the Devil’s Gonna Leave You Alone”

Many new believers are discouraged when they get the Holy Ghost and the devil starts to attack.

7And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines

The Devil always attacks…just as pharoah attacked and pursured the children of Israel…But God always answers in a supernatual way.

  23. Samuel has be loyal to the Lord, he hopes the Israelites would be loyal and honor God. He notices change in them , he askes them to committ themselves in total submission to the Lord by only worshipping him and no other idols. The Lord knows what’s about to happen, he always knows true repentance. He heard Samuel’s cry the people because they asked him to intercede for them so he did knowing they needed the Lord’s help to overcome the this battle. The Lord heard Samuel, he knew they would of been defeated if wouldn’t of gone to battle with them. The Lord was merciful to them. He saw Israelites true repentance and made war a complete success for Israel. The Philistines were defeated, this battle was won due to god’s mercy. He was there for them evern though they disobeyed before.

What an awesome god we have. Submitting to god and loving him like he deserves will bring you peace in your life. Many battles are yet to some but through god all battles have already been won. Love him with all your hearts and soul. Worship him and praise him, your life will change forever. I need you Lord I don’t have it all figured out. Thank you Lord for all the blessings and grace you have given me and my family. I seek you Lord I want to please you, delliver me from any idols that may get in the way of pleasing you.

  24. Isn’t is amazing that once the Israelites were obedient to what Samuel told them to turn their hearts back to God and put away their strange gods, that they were blessed by Samuel, the Lord fought their battle against the Philistines and the cities which had been taken from them by the Philistines were restored.

There is so much blessing in obedience but many times people can’t see beyond the obedience part, so they never obtain the blessing part.

Lord help us to listen and obey, because obedience is better than sacrifice.

  25. 2And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjathjearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after the LORD.

3And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.

There comes a time when we must stop just talking about something and actually do it. To me, Samuel seems to have a certain tone here, like, “Enough’s enough, quit your crying and get serious. If you’re going to get right with God, then just stand up and prove it; do what it takes, *repent,* and get over it. You say you want a change, well let’s see if you have a walk to match that talk.”

Sometimes we can get so caught in a cycle of “repentance” that we never actually finish up and repent. There is a time and place for mourning in repentance, but it’s not God’s will for us to wallow in failure and label ourselves by our mistakes and stay in woe about our problems and whatnot and come to the altar again and again over the same old stuff. What’s the use if we realize we’re walking the path of sin but just sit down and cry about it and never change? What’s the use if we don’t stop *and* turn around *and* start walking the path of righteousness? If we stop and stay, we’ve never actually gotten ourselves away from the path of sin, we’ve only acknowledged the problem.

Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision. (Joel 3:14 KJV)

The place of repentance is a place of decision. If we never leave the place of repentance and decision to *be* repented in deed, then what’s to stop us from changing our minds once again while we’re loitering in the place of decision?

A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. (James 1:8 KJV)

Sometimes you just gotta declare it’s time to take a stand and do what you are supposed to. To borrow Nike’s famous line, “just do it.”

    iDecide
    iAct

  26. 10And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel.

God is a right now God. We need not to wait until we get all our ducks in a row, we need to step in.

Too many times people say that they are waiting on God to do this or that so that they can do this or that, when more than likely, God is waiting oin us to get off our duffs so that He can come in and show His might and strength.

Even the Centerion that came to Jesus showed us this, though we learn how submissive he was, we also get to see that while he steps out there in faith, Jesus answers His prayers. Christ is just as ready and waiting on us to excerise our faith.

  27. 3And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.

When His people turned from they wicked ways God protected them again.

14And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even unto Gath; and the coasts thereof did Israel deliver out of the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.

God did not just begin protecting the Israelites, but he also restored things back to them.–when we turn from our wicked ways and serve only God he will restore what has been taken from us as well. Bless God for His restoration!
