2 Samuel 8

1  And after this it came to pass that David smote the Philistines, and subdued them: and David took Methegammah out of the hand of the Philistines.

And he smote Moab, and measured them with a line, casting them down to the ground; even with two lines measured he to put to death, and with one full line to keep alive. And so the Moabites became David’s servants, and brought gifts.

David smote also Hadadezer, the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to recover his border at the river Euphrates.

And David took from him a thousand chariots, and seven hundred horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen: and David houghed all the chariot horses, but reserved of them for an hundred chariots.

And when the Syrians of Damascus came to succour Hadadezer king of Zobah, David slew of the Syrians two and twenty thousand men.

Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.

And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem.

And from Betah, and from Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, king David took exceeding much brass.

When Toi king of Hamath heard that David had smitten all the host of Hadadezer,

10 Then Toi sent Joram his son unto king David, to salute him, and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer, and smitten him: for Hadadezer had wars with Toi. And Joram brought with him vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and vessels of brass:

11 Which also king David did dedicate unto the Lord, with the silver and gold that he had dedicated of all nations which he subdued;

12 Of Syria, and of Moab, and of the children of Ammon, and of the Philistines, and of Amalek, and of the spoil of Hadadezer, son of Rehob, king of Zobah.

13 And David gat him a name when he returned from smiting of the Syrians in the valley of salt, being eighteen thousand men.

14 And he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom put he garrisons, and all they of Edom became David’s servants. And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.

15 And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people.

16 And Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the host; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder;

17 And Zadok the son of Ahitub, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, were the priests; and Seraiah was the scribe;

18 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over both the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David’s sons were chief rulers.

  1. vs 11 David was apparently dedicating everything to God. Just as we should our all to Jesus.
    vs 15 The Lord preserved David. Why? Maybe because as vs 11 stated, David was dedicating everything to God. This is an example of what we can expect when we give it all to Jesus.

  2. David was protected by God where ever he went. Thats wonderful I dont live sometimes in a very good neighborhood but when I walk around this area I feel safe cause God protects me people around here always lay wait for people to come around but no one bothers me and its all of Jesus protecting me or it could be that they see a powerful Holy Ghost filled person comming towards them so they just don’t want any part of Jesus (world).but im always friendly wherever I go and ready to share the Gospel. In Ephesians it talks about putting on the full Gospel and breastplate of righteousness at all times thats my shield and protection anytime and anywhere. It sure is a beautiful morning (sitting on porch)thank you for your protection Wonderful Savior Jesus

  3. David trusted God and followed God and God made his enemies services to him the things that used to make trouble will be truned into a blessing.

    “Take the Region”

    David went from hiding in caves, to conquering the entire region in a short period of time.

    This is where the Pentecostals of Fort Worth are…The Battle right BEFORE the REGION is given to us…SOON the ANOINTING will destroy the yoke holding the Pentecostals of Fort Worth and we will take the REGION by FORCE and sinners will submit and bring presents to the LORD.

    IN YOUR FACE

  5. 11 Which also king David did dedicate unto the Lord, with the silver and gold that he had dedicated of all nations which he subdued;

    12 Of Syria, and of Moab, and of the children of Ammon, and of the Philistines, and of Amalek, and of the spoil of Hadadezer, son of Rehob, king of Zobah.

    We should not forget to bring everything to God, lay it at His feet & He will continue to give us VICTORY. For that you must first get on your knees and pray, then get on your feet and work!!!! I lay Ft. Worth, Tarrant County, Hudson Oak & Weatherford all Parker County. Now join me in laying your region at His feet. One by one He will bring it through, one by one He will give us the Victory.

  6. David was a man after God s on heart and keeped his on heart tinder i pray that God helps me to keep a heart like david .a repenting heart a child like heart so when things of this world comes agianst use we will rise up throu GOD and slay them down

  7. You must have the armour on to fight your battles. Ephesians 6:10-18

    Finally my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all to stand. Stand therefore having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: PRAYING always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints. Just as God gave victory to David wherever he marched, the Lord will do te same for us. As we take this city of Ft. Worth. David had found favor in the eyes of the Lord, and so has the POFW!!!!

  8. Conquering for God’s house

    Every bit of brass, gold, silver, and fine metals that David captured from these bloody wars had a purpose to be used in the building of the future Solomon’s temple.

    Today we must choose to seek first the kingdom of God…

    Whether at work, at school, running errands, or whatever the events of today hold; the purpose is to war for God’s house.

    Bring the precious metals into his house. The broken, the lame, the halt, the weary, the outcasts, the rejects: these are all precious in God’s site.

    War through encouragement, war through prayer, war through service, war through owing all men love.

    Once there were enough materials to build the house then they could start.

    Could it be God, who fully intends to provide what we need, is waiting on pofw to bring in all the precious metals? Then when it is time we will move into the new building?

  9. THE RESPONSIBILITY OF AUTHORITY

    15 And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people.

    In realizing and recognizing the position as King of Israel, David also accepted the responsibility that comes along with a position of authority.

    MSG
    God gave David victory wherever he marched.
    15 Thus David ruled over all of Israel. He ruled well—fair and even-handed in all his duties and relationships.

    GWT
    15 So David ruled all Israel. He did what was fair and right for all his people.

    To reign means to counsel or advise.

    Judgement – mishpat – judgment, justice, ordinance
    1) act of deciding a case
    2) place, court, seat of judgment
    3) process, procedure, litigation (before judges)
    4) case, cause (presented for judgment)
    5) sentence, decision (of judgment)
    6) execution (of judgment)
    7) time (of judgment)

    Justice – tsĕdaqah – justice, righteousness
    a) righteousness (in government)
    1) of judge, ruler, king
    2) of law
    3) of Davidic king Messiah
    b) righteousness (of God’s attribute)
    c) righteousness (in a case or cause)
    d) righteousness, truthfulness
    e) righteousness (as ethically right)
    f) righteousness (as vindicated), justification, salvation
    1) of God
    2) prosperity (of people)
    g) righteous acts

    The ultimate responsibility of Leadership is to LIVE righteous before GOD and make GOD approved, GOD guided decisions that are fully supported by the WORD of GOD.

    This will prevent “THE HIGH COST OF BAD DECISIONS”

  10. Battles are always being fought in our walk with God,but God will always be beside us fighting with us,if we don’t make the BAD decision to leave Him out and try to fight the battle by ourself ,which always makes the problem worse.Ipray I always have God’s help when in a battle that could cost so many lives to be changed!!

  11. In this scripture, it is obvious that God blesses. So stay faithful, to his annoited and to the Lord. You too could be seeing increase or just have it safely stored up where moths can’t touch it.
    “Be Church”…iwork…iwork…iwork…a lot…imissu…

  12. When you are blessed of the Lord, you are victorious! The end of verse 6 in the MSG reads….”God gave victory to David wherever he marched.” Its time to put our marching shoes on!!

  13. 14 And he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom put he garrisons, and all they of Edom became David’s servants. And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.

    The favor of the Lord will be evident every where we go!

  14. I find the later part of the chapter David setting order for his men. Maybe even a form of government.

    15) And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people.
    16) And Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the host; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder;
    17) And Zadok the son of Ahitub, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, were the priests; and Seraiah was the scribe;
    18) and Benaiah the sond of Jehoiada was over both the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David’s sons were chief rulers.

    This is an example we follow at POFW. Pastor has placed an “order” for people, groups, departments and the business of the POFW. I believe it works well.

    “SUBDUE YOUR FLESH”

    And after this it came to pass, that David smote the Philistines, and subdued them: and David took Metheg–ammah out of the hand of the Philistines. (2 Samuel 8:1 KJV)

    Pastor has taught us that the Philistines are a type of the flesh…(and the Lord knows that most pagan Philistines show too much flesh).

  16. Great word. I can imagine the enemies that God will help us destroy if we would dedicate all that we have unto the Lord. God kept David through it all and will do the same for us

  17. Put on the whole armour of God……Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Eph. 6:11 KJV
    We will always fight battles with our walk with God, the way we handle them is weather or now we go thru them again. Like Bro Tallant preached last night we have to be careful not to make a bad decision cause it not only hinders us but also people that are following us and our families. Lord help me to be the willing vessel that you can use for your kingdom

  18. The many blessings that David received were from the spoils of war. Even the enemies of his enemies blessed Daivid and all of Isreal. We never know what or how God will bless us! Maybe your enemy’s enemy might bless you for fight for what is right.

  19. “David defeated the Philistines.”

    God will always fulfill his word, and his timing is always perfecy.

    Deut 33:29 “Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the LORD, the shield of thy help, and who is the sword of thy excellency! and thine enemies shall be found liars unto thee; and thou shalt tread upon their high places.”

    Ps 66:3 “Say unto God, How terrible art thou in thy works! through the greatness of thy power shall thine enemies submit themselves unto thee.”

    Matt 22:43 “..How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
    44 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?” in reffrence to Ps 110:1

  20. What more could David ask for, God was with him. Victory came easy for David. Trust in the Lord, and he will give you your victory, you have been seeking!

  21. LORD help us ( me ) to fully submit to your authoritative Word. Thank you very much for our leaders you have placed in our ( my ) lives.
    Give us a desire and passion to seek your
    face everyday and to remember that it is YOU that gives us all things.
    Help us to be GOD sufficient and not
    self sufficient. In JESUS NAME! Amen.

  22. 15. And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people.

    Not only did he reign and judge, he executed justice – this speaks well of him, because not all judges and certainly not all kings make sure justice is done.

    • 4 And David took from him a thousand chariots, and seven hundred horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen: and David houghed all the chariot horses, but reserved of them for an hundred chariots.

      Houghed all the horses

  24. This chapter illustrates surety. “And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.” David did what was right and God blessed him. God is still protecting all that do right today, why would we want to do anything other than please the Creator (Jesus). May the good Lord bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  25. David was blessed and protected wherever he went and in whatever he did. The 23rd Psalms comes to my mind:
    Psalm 23 A psalm of David.
    1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
    2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
    he leads me beside quiet waters,
    3 he refreshes my soul.
    He guides me along the right paths
    for his name’s sake.

    in the presence of my enemies.
    You anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows.
    6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me
    all the days of my life,
    and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
    forever. NIV

  26. Vs Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went. (2 Samuel 8:6 KJV)

    David was blessed because he obeyed to the voice of the Lord. And POFW is also blessed because we are obeying the voice of the Lord.

    And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God. Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field. Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep. Blessed shall be thy basket and thy store. Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out. The Lord shall cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thy face: they shall come out against thee one way, and flee before thee seven ways. The Lord shall command the blessing upon thee in thy storehouses, and in all that thou settest thine hand unto; and he shall bless thee in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. The Lord shall establish thee an holy people unto himself, as he hath sworn unto thee, if thou shalt keep the commandments of the Lord thy God, and walk in his ways. And all people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the Lord; and they shall be afraid of thee. And the Lord shall make thee plenteous in goods, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, in the land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers to give thee. The Lord shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow. And the Lord shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the Lord thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them: And thou shalt not go aside from any of the words which I command thee this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them. (Deuteronomy 28:1-14 KJV)

  27. 6 Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.

    14 And he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom put he garrisons, and all they of Edom became David’s servants. And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.

    God will establish his kingdom in the midst of the enemy. God is going to establish garrison through out the region of Fort Worth.

    I believe!

    18 …………………; and David’s sons were chief rulers.

    And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. -Revelation 1:6

    And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. -Revelation 5:10

  28. I see David at the prime of his life seeing all Gods promises being fulfilled and I think why couldn’t this be the way the story ended.

    You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”

    It rare that I study on david, and not hear his cry, “Absalom oh Absalom” david you’ve accomplished so much Gods hand is upon everything you do. I know this chapter is about David’s victories, but David victories don’t make you strong, trials do.

    One day I’ll preach the message, The Trial After the blessing.

    • So true, its always the trail after the blessing that knocks people down…hence, Elijah ran off after being assulted by Jezebel. Good message

  29. David dedicated the spoils of his enemy to the Lord. He knew that without God victory was impossible. I never want to lose sight of where my victory comes from or take it for granted. Always give credit where credit is due, God is the one in control.

  30. David is getting his stuff together. It took him a while to reach the height of all this. He kept God right in the middle of his decisions and every battle. Some were good and some were bad. David never turned from the Lord. He is victorious. this could be the example of where we are headed. Right now something are good and something’s are bad but I believe we are headed for the all victorious time in our lives. Let us keep marching on till we find Gods favor in every situation like here in this chapter.

    Keep pushing POFW. We are almost over the brunt of the storm and Gods victory will be had shortly.

  31. 15 And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people.

  32. David subdued …. and the Lord preserved…..David fought, he took the spoil and gave back to the Lord what belonged to Him, and the people of the land that he subdued served him. I believe this is a great example of the Everyday prayer we are praying where we are binding the strong man of the city and loosing it’s goods’ to come into the Kingdom of God.

    If we will subdue our enemy, the Lord will preserve us and prepare us for the battle, so the spoil can be used to benefit the kingdom of God.

  33. 2 And he smote Moab, and measured them with a line, casting them down to the ground; even with two lines measured he to put to death, and with one full line to keep alive. And so the Moabites became David’s servants, and brought gifts.

    Sometimes in life, we have things that will be a snare to us if we do not approach then with discipline.

    All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body. (1 Corinthians 6:12, 13 KJV)

    We should not be under subjection to the natural desires of the body (such as hunger for food) but let it be used for our advantage through discipline (letting it guide us in our need for food but not into gluttony.) So should we use wisdom and discipline in all aspects of our lives to not be brought under subjection in those things we should stay in control of.

    That said, there are some things that are not meant to be put under subjection so much as in rejection through full defeat.

    And an angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you. And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this? Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you. (Judges 2:1-3 KJV)

    Sometimes the things we deal with are inherited from others’ bad decisions, but just because we are dealing with others’ decisions doesn’t leave us off the hook to turn it around and make our own right decisions. David had a chance to be used by God to make things right but instead continued to make agreement with the inhabitants of the land rather than drive them out completely. Some things may seem advantageous at first, but we will never have true peace with some things until we submit to God and fully deal with them as He told us to.

    But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites; Of the nations concerning which the Lord said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love. (1 Kings 11:1, 2 KJV)

    David seemed victorious in the natural and reaped a sort of natural blessing, but his failure to claim spiritual victory by eradicating these nations of the land (instead he only brought them under subjection) led to a snare that dealt directly with his son’s fall from righteous living and ruling. We may not feel it so much, but those coming after us very may will…

  34. 1 And after this it came to pass that David smote the Philistines, and subdued them: and David took Methegammah out of the hand of the Philistines.

    Methegammah was the Philistines’ mother city. When David took it he not only took their capital, but their moral broke. Probably much worse than when he killed their champion Goliath. David broke the stronghold of the Philistines, much as we came to Ft Worth to BREAK the stronghold that the world has here, on our city. God send Pastor to this city, and it is our job to back him and take it in Jesus Name.

  35. Outwardly the people that David conguered became his servants. But inwardly they they held contempt in their hearts that is still rising up today. David made a name for himself but now many years later veagence is rising up again today in the Philistines. Syrians and etc. Israels enemies have learned from Davids mistake. He spared many but the arabs want to destroy them all!

  36. 10 Then Toi sent Joram his son unto king David, to salute him, and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer, and smitten him: for Hadadezer had wars with Toi. And Joram brought with him vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and vessels of brass:

    11 Which also king David did dedicate unto the Lord, with the silver and gold that he had dedicated of all nations which he subdued;

    It looks like David made a effort to collect all silver and gold that he recieved from the spoils and war and dedicated it to the lord. David realized that it was from God that all his victories was wrought and he wanted to make sure that he honored God in all his substance.
