1 Kings 13

1 And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the Lord unto Bethel: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.

And he cried against the altar in the word of the Lord, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the Lord; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men’s bones shall be burnt upon thee.

And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which the Lord hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.

And it came to pass, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.

The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the Lord.

And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the Lord thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God besought the Lord, and the king’s hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.

And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward.

And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place:

For so was it charged me by the word of the Lord, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest.

10 So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Bethel.

11 Now there dwelt an old prophet in Bethel; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father.

12 And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah.

13 And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass: and he rode thereon,

14 And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am.

15 Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread.

16 And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place:

17 For it was said to me by the word of the Lord, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.

18 He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the Lord, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.

19 So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water.

20 And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the Lord came unto the prophet that brought him back:

21 And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the Lord, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the Lord, and hast not kept the commandment which the Lord thy God commanded thee,

22 But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the Lord did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.

23 And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back.

24 And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his carcase was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the carcase.

25 And, behold, men passed by, and saw the carcase cast in the way, and the lion standing by the carcase: and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt.

26 And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the Lord: therefore the Lordhath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake unto him.

27 And he spake to his sons, saying, Saddle me the ass. And they saddled him.

28 And he went and found his carcase cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the carcase: the lion had not eaten the carcase, nor torn the ass.

29 And the prophet took up the carcase of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back: and the old prophet came to the city, to mourn and to bury him.

30 And he laid his carcase in his own grave; and they mourned over him, saying, Alas, my brother!

31 And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones:

32 For the saying which he cried by the word of the Lordagainst the altar in Bethel, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.

33 After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.

34 And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.

  1. Disobedience to God’s Word always brings destruction of one kind or another. We should always obey God.

  2. This chapter is very clear ….
When the man of God is called to do or go for his calling to the Lord dont go to the places that God doesnt want a man or woman to go to. He will punish us or remove us out of the Book of Life ..which no godly annoited person of God would want. If he brought you out …(dance clubs, bars, ect. He brought me out! )-stay out. I dont understand why people say they are Christians but do this on Saturdays and go to church on Sunday and just because they go to church everything is just fine. Wrong! Wrong. Dont be decieved. I dont want the Lord to destroy me For going to places He doesnt want me to go to represent Him.
thank you Lord for keeping me on the right path. And going towards heaven instead the wrong path hell.
love you Jesus with fear of your greatness in a good way.

    We Can’t Change the Word

18 He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the Lord, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.

But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. (Galatians 1:8 KJV)

  4. The message is clear yet again *** BE CAREFUL WHOM YOU ALLOW TO SPEAK INTO YOUR LIFE, IN THE SAME WAY BE CAREFUL HOW YOU SPEAK INTO SOMEONES LIFE***** many say they come in His name but Few are real. I am very skeptical when people say God told me….. so what I do is pray, if God told them, if I pray & fast God will reveal it to me also. I am not saying don’t trust, just be careful do not be quick to obey, go to God, He will make it clear to you. In the same way, don’t go to someone & say God told me…. you better make sure is God; unless you want to finish eaten by the lion of this world.

  5. A High Price for a bad decision…

In living for God we all will grow to the point, we know the voice of God. When He speaks to us and gives us direction it is up to is to follow His leading and not the voice of others.
The tricky part of his situation was it was a fellow “leader” that tricked him. In his time of confusion he should have stopped to compare the words of the prophet to the words God had spoken, then he would have known to keep going. For the Word of God is true and every man a lie.

  6. The man of God had a word from God and he didn’t follow the word of the Lord and God kill him because he didn’t follow his word

  7. THE TRAGEDY OF DISOBEDIENCE

It has always burdened me to know of individuals that GOD has used greatly only to find themselves at the crossroad of obedience and disobedience. Everybody passes this crossroad multiple times in their lives.

What is disheartening is to see GOD use a man to prophesy by the word of GOD, be protected by the hand of GOD and heal by the power of GOD ignore his own faith, trust and commitment to GOD. What this man of GOD so powerfully obeyed became the deception and course to his own death.

Deceived – 18 He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the Lord, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.

When you have a WORD from GOD do not allow anybody to talk you out of being obedient to that word, even if they do it in the name of the LORD.

I see this on a continual basis, some other (preacher) will tell a saint that it is ok to do something that the WORD of GOD has spoken against and the saint will do what the other (preach) says rather than obey GOD totally. This is why we need a Pastor we can trust to speak the WORD of GOD.

  8. O be careful little feet where you go, oh be careful little feet where you go, for the father up above is looking down with love, oh be careful little feet where you go….
Be careful little hands what you do,
Be careful little eyes what you see,
Be careful little mouth what you say…

The man of God out of Judah performed his duties exactly as God instructed; until someone lied to him. Warning signs should have started flashing when the old prophet’s instructions contradicted what God told him not to do. Of course, shame on the old prophet for lying; especially in the name of the Lord. However, that did/does not change the original charge by God on what one should and should not do.

1 John 4:1, 1 Thessalonians 5:21, Mathew 24:24 each speak of false prophets and warn against their lies and trickery.

  9. I forgot to comment yesterday about the making of priests. When you choose your own priests that are not ordained by God it leads everyone astray. The people connect with their low friends. Everyone sees their sins as either good or alright because the priest is doing the same thing as them. In today’s chapter it even gets to the point where Jeroboam makes himself a priest. It’s not good when preists don’t listen to the wise and they appoint people who will gain popularity instead of Godliness.

33 After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.

  10. The prophet won the big, obvious battle against Jeroboam but tripped at the less-obvious encounter with the fellow prophet. If something seems off, don’t simply trust “oh it must just be me, surely this other person couldn’t be wrong…” The enemy will use times of weakness (such as after a big spiritual battle as we see here) to drive a weary servant to rebellion and compromise.

As many have said, we must be careful who speaks into our lives. Lies have a way of being appealing, compromise has a way of being convenient, and disobedience has a way of looking “right, sensible, practical…” The Word should be our measure, our refuge and place of keeping.

Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. (Psalm 119:11 KJV)

  11. Be careful who you let speak into your life if they can’t back up with Bible what they are telling you then it isn’t from God. Being disobedience has it price, that’s why it is better to do what we know to do. There are four things the world is looking to the Christians for: Do you love me? Can I trust you? Are you a real person? Does this stuff about Jesus really work?
The world is watching us and wanting what we have we have to have a senstitive ear to hear what the word says.

  12. v18 He said unto him , I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel sake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thee house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he led unto him.

I PRAYED ABOUT IT BROTHER, GOD TOLD ME IT WAS OK.

Many times when we first come to the Lord we have all kinds of baggage. God starts talking to us and we start throwing away movies and cd’s and bad habits… As we live through out the years, one day we hear a “voice” that tells us it’s ok to watch the things we once threw away…until in the end, our collection of “stuff” is greater than what we threw away…

  14. verse 15-19 msg ” Well, come home with me and have a meal.” “Sorry, I can’t do that, ” The holy man said, ” I can neither go back with you nor eat with you in this country. I’m under strict orders from God. ‘Don’t eat a crumb; don’t drink a drop; and don’t come back the way you came.'”

When God gives YOU strict orders, unless he changes his mind and speaks to YOU and tell YOU , then just stay with the plan. Keep listening, and being obedient and he will bring you through everything. Then you don’t have to be found on the road dead……

  15. 31 And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones:

The prophet wanted to be buried next to the man of God. It is important that we remeber, no matter what gifts God has placed in our lifes, that a gift doesn’t bring annointing. Because the prophet could prophecy, he didn’t assume that he was the man of God. Instead he desired that in death he be close to the man of God.

  16. Don’t trust position over God. The man of God refused to go back with the older prophet until he learned he was a prophet as well. Instead of praying about what the older prophet said he simply trusted him. Our problems start when we start trusting the words of man over The Word of God. Just because someone has a title or position, even in the church, we must listen to what is said and compare it to the Word. People are human and our human nature tends to manipulate situations to get them to go in our favor. No one is exempt from their human nature so it is important to pray for each other and hold our leaders up in prayer so they have strength to withstand the temptation of flesh.

  17. v6 And the king answered and said unto the man of GOD, Intreat now the face of the LORD thy GOD, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of GOD besought the LORD, and the king”s hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.

  18. v32 For the saying which he cried by the word of the Lord against the alter in Bethel, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.

Be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the LORD, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the LORD.” 1Cor.15:58
GOD is not coming for sitters. Our good works will follow us.

But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.

  19. This chapter illustrates deception. The king tried to lure the man of God back with him against the Lord’s will, and then one claiming to be as he asked him to return with him; “And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the Lord: therefore the Lordhath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake unto him.” One must be careful unto whom they listen to, for the deceiver is out too draw as many away as he can, which is all the more reason one should read the Word of God and seek his face in prayer. One can rest assured a true man of God will push all that hath an ear to hear; to the Word, to prayer, to praise and worship, and to the works of the Lord. Therefore all should thank God (Jesus) and pray for the servant of the Lord (Jesus). May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  20. When God revealed to Jeroboan that he would make him a king of Israel, He explaained clearly that Solomon’s idol worshiping was the cause of the change in leadership back in 1Ki 11:33. Jeroboam was warned that he must behave differently -he must obey God’s commands and walk uprightly – if he is to remain in God’s favor. Once idol worshiping was loosed into the lives of Israel it was difficult to stop, like an addiction. Some will recognize the need to change and do so, others will revolt against the change, this is the pressure that Jeroboam was coming into kingship with, a broke down counrty by sin and an need to clean and fix it up. God didn’t say that it would be easy, He only said that He would be there. Fear can be changed to joy when we are walking and living for God and not in sin.
Yet after he becomes king, Jeroboam supports, and even goes so far as to initiate, idol worship amongst his people. Even after being warned by the man of God of Judah, he continues to appoint priests at the pagan high places “from all sorts of people” vs33, a clear violation of God’s command that only Levites serve in the priesthood. When we get into 2 Kings, the chorus then becomes “He did evil in the eyes of the Lord and did not turn away from ‘any’ of the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit” (2 Ki 13:11 check 2Ki 10:29,31; 13:6; 14:24; 15:9,etc.) Instead of a legacy of justice and blessing, Jeroboam’s legacy. recalled over and over again is on of deliberate waywardness. The only half-way attempt of change that he made was to ask the man of God to intercede with God to restore his hand. Even this did him no good without obedience to the word of God. The same is for the old prophet and the mand of God of Judah, they knew better, but without clarification and discernment, neither of them ended off good.

  21. The curse of disobeience.

21 And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the Lord, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the Lord, and hast not kept the commandment which the Lord thy God commanded thee, 22 But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the Lord did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.

It pays to listen to what God and the man of God tell you to do. I have seen both sides of this , and I can say with experence that it does pay to listen ,even if you don’t think that the answer is correct. God will honor obedience than a sacrifice if it came to those two things. This is the reason why it is good to be in tune with the spirit and submitted under the authority in your life. i know a few people that had made the choice of not listening to those in authority, and have missed on great opprotunities in their lives.

  22. Be careful of those who profess to be mighty men of God. If you believe a lie your fall could come. Seek God in all things. Don’t beg God for anything, simply ask and believe. God would not that his children beg for bread.Psalms 37.25. WE need to spend more time worshipping and less time asking for things. I was on a camping trip with the royal rangers once.WE were 400 miles from home my truck gave out and I almost abandoned it in the desert at a gas station in the middle of nowhere. I put a quart of transmission fluid and we all gathered and prayed that we could make the journey home. Once we took our break someone asked Should we pray again? No I said God heard us the first time.We drove back 400 miles to the church and the truck broke down shortly after but we made it safe. Believe God and he will get us through this life’s journey!!!

  23. God will always allow things to come into our live’s that will test our devotion to him. The prophet passed the first test, but he did not pass the second test.

The Bible says to keep the heart because out of it are the issues of life. The actions of the prophet revealed his heart. Though in word he was loyal, God saw past the exterior into his true motives and intentions.

  24. 21 And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the Lord, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the Lord, and hast not kept the commandment which the Lord thy God commanded thee,

22 But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the Lord did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.

The fatal price of disobedience… The young prophet made a choice by believing someone who God did not tell him to believe. He chose to trust his own ideas instead of wholly following the words that God had spoken to him. In turn it cost him his life and his ministry. Always be careful who you allow to speak into your life; it could mean the difference between life and death.

  25. Disobedience to God always comes with a price and obedience always comes with a reward witch one we choose it up to use

  26. 28 And he went and found his carcase cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the carcase: the lion had not eaten the carcase, nor torn the ass.

29 And the prophet took up the carcase of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back: and the old prophet came to the city, to mourn and to bury him.

It takes a brave man to take a possible meal away from a lion! It was already too late for this man, but I’m thankful for a brave man of God who watches for our souls and faces the (spiritual) lions of this world to pull us from danger!

    Hebrews 13:17
Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

  27. This chapter shows us why it is important to obey every word of God. God is not giving us instructions for nothing, but he has a plan for our life. We must follow what thus said the Lord if we expect to receive his blessings.

  28. It was said earlier, but after a battle over the big things, the man of God looses out over the little thing-that was done subtle. It’s the” littles foxes that spoil the vine” in Song of Solomon 2:15; little disobediences lead us to sin. The old prophet lied, deceiving the man of God-who never stopped to investigate who was talking to him. Trust is earned and should not be given until you are sure the person speaking into your life is trust worthy.

  29. ILove to eat supper with Jesus

    Compare these scriptures

I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. (Galatians 1:6-8 KJV)

  30. The consequences of sin is death …”sin when it is finished bringeth forth death.” The man, sent by God, was given specific instructions by God, but then listen to a “prophet” and disobeyed what God had told him. Why is it if God would speak to you to do something specifically, then why wouldn’t God speak to you if He changed his mind? Too many people, can read what God is commanding them to do through the Word, but then a “so call prophet” will speak in to their lives something totally different, and instead of inquiring of the Lord, they do what the “so called prophet” or individual tells them. Then they must pay the price of disobedience. In this chapter disobedience cost the man his life. Disobedience is as the sin of witchcraft and will cost us life, maybe not physical, but spiritual.

It pays to heed the Lord in every aspect. If God tells you to do something, He can also tell you to not do it.

  31. I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. -As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. Galatians 1:6-9

GIMEL. Deal bountifully with thy servant, that I may live, and keep thy word. -Psalms 119:17

I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word. -Psalms 119:101

  32. 17 For it was said to me by the word of the Lord, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.
18 He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the Lord, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.

    Liar Liar

As people we want others to acknowledge we exist, and to tell us the we are doing good. The man of God being a honest man, expected that the prophet was being honest too. Whether the prophet was a false prophet or not, does not matter, but rather if the man of God had held to the word that he had been given, that is what counted. As with today, we know what the word tells us to do, yet we still listen to others when they contradict the word. Why ? Do we not believe that the word is truth? Do we just not care??? Or is it that we desire to first please or flesh, since it is here with us, and the Please God if there is enough left over? Many times we get caught up in our daily grind so much that we do just that, we put God on the back burner. As the church, we must hold to the words that God gave us, and stay obedient too….

  33. In this Chapter the enemy found a way to get the prophet of Judah in trouble, the enemy is disguised as an old prophet. He potrays to be an on God’s side , little did the prophet of Judah know that he was being tricked.

The Prophet of Judah was tired and hungry the enemy knew just what to say to convince the Prophet to go back and eat with him.

The prophet of Judah was warned by God, he feared the Lord, little did he know that the Lord knew what lied ahead.

The Lord gave the prophet of Judah an opportunity to prove himself but he failed.

Lord help me HEAR and listen to your commands so I don’t fall between the cracks like the prophet, I want to obey and seek you in all choices I make. Get under my feet enemy.

  34. Vs 18 He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the Lord, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.

First red flag I see is
    1. We should never have to announce our title (or have a title) Our conduct should speak for us.

2 If the word of the Lord changes he’ll speak to you about if you allow him the opportunity.

    3. Most likely he’s not going to ask you to the opposite of what he asked you not to do.

Prob. 11:14 Where no counsel is,the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

  35. This chapter reminds me of how fake some people can be. It’s a horrible spirit of deception and false doctrine. Too many want to stray to what feels better rather than listening to the one and only voice we should always be listening to. A very wise woman once told me “God is not the author of confusion” … We need to be patient when we don’t hear him and stay in his word when we do.

    God is up to something

  36. This chapter is an eye opener and reminder for us to be alert unto God’s word, not man! This holy man had heard from God and was given strict instructions, per his own words in verses 16-17 MSG…”Sorry, I can’t do that,” the holy man said. “I can neither go back with you nor eat with you in this country. I’m under strict orders from God: ‘Don’t eat a crumb; don’t drink a drop; and don’t come back the way you came.'” Yet, he still allowed someone to persuade him into not following the very word that he knew had been spoken by God. Oh Lord, please help us to always guard our relationship with you to where we know your voice and can discern the evil that comes against it.

  37. Oh a lie can kill your brother! We think that our lies only hurt us. We see here that a lie miss guided the profit and ended his life. Be sure that you truly here God. “Thus saith the Lord” means exactly what it says. Lying about what God says is Stupid! Lifes harder when your stupid.
