1 Kings 14

King James Version (KJV)

14 At that time Abijah the son of Jeroboam fell sick.

And Jeroboam said to his wife, Arise, I pray thee, and disguise thyself, that thou be not known to be the wife of Jeroboam; and get thee to Shiloh: behold, there is Ahijah the prophet, which told me that I should be king over this people.

And take with thee ten loaves, and cracknels, and a cruse of honey, and go to him: he shall tell thee what shall become of the child.

And Jeroboam’s wife did so, and arose, and went to Shiloh, and came to the house of Ahijah. But Ahijah could not see; for his eyes were set by reason of his age.

And the Lord said unto Ahijah, Behold, the wife of Jeroboam cometh to ask a thing of thee for her son; for he is sick: thus and thus shalt thou say unto her: for it shall be, when she cometh in, that she shall feign herself to be another woman.

And it was so, when Ahijah heard the sound of her feet, as she came in at the door, that he said, Come in, thou wife of Jeroboam; why feignest thou thyself to be another? for I am sent to thee with heavy tidings.

Go, tell Jeroboam, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Forasmuch as I exalted thee from among the people, and made thee prince over my people Israel,

And rent the kingdom away from the house of David, and gave it thee: and yet thou hast not been as my servant David, who kept my commandments, and who followed me with all his heart, to do that only which was right in mine eyes;

But hast done evil above all that were before thee: for thou hast gone and made thee other gods, and molten images, to provoke me to anger, and hast cast me behind thy back:

10 Therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of Jeroboam, and will cut off from Jeroboam him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel, and will take away the remnant of the house of Jeroboam, as a man taketh away dung, till it be all gone.

11 Him that dieth of Jeroboam in the city shall the dogs eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the fowls of the air eat: for the Lord hath spoken it.

12 Arise thou therefore, get thee to thine own house: and when thy feet enter into the city, the child shall die.

13 And all Israel shall mourn for him, and bury him: for he only of Jeroboam shall come to the grave, because in him there is found some good thing toward the Lord God of Israel in the house of Jeroboam.

14 Moreover the Lord shall raise him up a king over Israel, who shall cut off the house of Jeroboam that day: but what? even now.

15 For the Lord shall smite Israel, as a reed is shaken in the water, and he shall root up Israel out of this good land, which he gave to their fathers, and shall scatter them beyond the river, because they have made their groves, provoking the Lord to anger.

16 And he shall give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam, who did sin, and who made Israel to sin.

17 And Jeroboam’s wife arose, and departed, and came to Tirzah: and when she came to the threshold of the door, the child died;

18 And they buried him; and all Israel mourned for him, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by the hand of his servant Ahijah the prophet.

19 And the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, how he warred, and how he reigned, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.

20 And the days which Jeroboam reigned were two and twenty years: and he slept with his fathers, and Nadab his son reigned in his stead.

21 And Rehoboam the son of Solomon reigned in Judah. Rehoboam was forty and one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the Lord did choose out of all the tribes of Israel, to put his name there. And his mother’s name was Naamah an Ammonitess.

22 And Judah did evil in the sight of the Lord, and they provoked him to jealousy with their sins which they had committed, above all that their fathers had done.

23 For they also built them high places, and images, and groves, on every high hill, and under every green tree.

24 And there were also sodomites in the land: and they did according to all the abominations of the nations which theLord cast out before the children of Israel.

25 And it came to pass in the fifth year of king Rehoboam, that Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem:

26 And he took away the treasures of the house of the Lord, and the treasures of the king’s house; he even took away all: and he took away all the shields of gold which Solomon had made.

27 And king Rehoboam made in their stead brasen shields, and committed them unto the hands of the chief of the guard, which kept the door of the king’s house.

28 And it was so, when the king went into the house of theLord, that the guard bare them, and brought them back into the guard chamber.

29 Now the rest of the acts of Rehoboam, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

30 And there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all their days.

31 And Rehoboam slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And his mother’s name was Naamah an Ammonitess. And Abijam his son reigned in his stead.

  1. Provoke-to stir up, arouse, or call forth (feelings, desires, or actions)

Throughout the Bible we find many examples where God no longer tolerates the sins of the people. This chapter is another example of sinners provoking God to anger ( v. 15) and jealousy (v. 22) and the wrath of God being poured out upon them.

    Hebrews 10:24
And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:

If I’m going to provoke God in any way I desire for it to be provoking him to love and good works. This comes with the price of keeping His commandments and following God with all my heart just as Dvid did (v. 8) yes, David messed up in his life but it never stopped him from repenting and provoking God’s love and good works into his life.

So, today I will consider my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, provoke them to love and God woks, and provoke God to love and His blessings upon my family, my church, and my city in Jesus name.

  2. ILove to eat breakfast with Jesus

You can not hide from the Lord

5 And the Lord said unto Ahijah, Behold, the wife of Jeroboam cometh to ask a thing of thee for her son; for he is sick: thus and thus shalt thou say unto her: for it shall be, when she cometh in, that she shall feign herself to be another woman.

  3. 10 Therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of Jeroboam, and will cut off from Jeroboam him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel, and will take away the remnant of the house of Jeroboam, as a man taketh away dung, till it be all gone.

Treat all your blessings like dung without giving praise, thanks, and honor to the Lord who gave you all & they will be taken away just like dung.

I don’t understand people that wait until tragedy strikes to go look for the men of God. Don’t they understand that you can NOT build shelter in a middle of a storm? I lived in the islands for many years seen many hurricanes & it would be insane to try to build a house or any type of shelter under 120 + miles per hr winds. I have seen a 4×4 go through a wall as if it was a knife through butter or coconuts fly like cannon balls.

Get in the word daily, get in prayer daily, talk to Him daily, that when you call He can identify your voice with out having to think. Build your house upon the Rock in the good weather days so when the storm comes it will not crumble down.

  4. V12 talks about the word of the Lord that was for the kings wife and the king. Some time we ask God about thing and he gives us answer and it’s not what we want or like but I must take all his words with joy good or bad and say thank you Jesus for speaking to me thank you telling me I did wrong.

  5. ipray for God to reign in my life always.
ilove Him enough to listen to what he teaches me thru HIS word.
    Proverbs 11:20-
They that are a froward heart are an abomination to the Lord: but such as are upright in their way are his delight.

I hope to be a desciple that the Lord wants me to be and when he’s not happy with things He speaks to me with love and correction by His word.
    thank you JESUS!

  6. The mercy of God is overwhelming. In this chapter it says that ALL were doing wrong. Those Rehoboam were leading in Judah, and those that Jeroboam were leading in the rest of Israel. God could have wiped them all out and started over, but God had made a promise to Abraham.

The promises of God witheld the judgement. I am thankful for the promises of God that stay judgement for a season to give room to repent.

I believe that all Israel and Judah had to do here was repent and God would have extended mercy.

  7. These kings did evil in the sight of the Lord and it brought trouble and destruction to their families and the nation. What we do affects others. We are not an island unto ourselves.

  8. In this scripture…you can see that the fear of the Lord is important here. It’s apparent that reverance was missing…and God won’t be mocked. So, it costed a child’s life. We can all be greatfull for the blood of Jesus and repentance.

  9. Scripture said the Kings continued to disobey the Lord, their lives shortened, their families were affected by their actions. These Kings are not good examples to Israel nor Judah.

There is no King like our King, no Lord like our Lord.

The Lord punishes all disobedience, you can run but you can’t hide, the Lord knows the matters of the heart. No God is like our God, what draws people to worship other god’s, it’s the enemy looking for a way to kill, steal and diestroy, until we accept god as our Lord and Savior in our lives and leave sin from our lives then God will bless us abunduntly.

Lord thank you for another day strenghten me, I worship you Lord.

  10. It has been said all week, be sure your sins will find you out…there will be a price to pay. In Romans the Bible states we are all sinners and come short of the glory of God. However, it is what we do about those sins that separate a follower of Christ from the rest of the population. As it was preached this weekend, we have an advocate between us and the Father. Jesus paid the ultimate price for our sins and all we have to do is repent to be spared our due judgment.

Verse two perks my interest. Why would Jeroboam want his wife to disguise herself? Could it be he was ashamed that he was asking God; whom he knew he had sinned against for help? Could it be he did not want Israel to know he had reached out to God for help? Lord, help me to never be so ashamed or deep in sin that I cannot stand before you and ask forgiveness.

  11. NO DECEPTION HERE

2 And Jeroboam said to his wife, Arise, I pray thee, and disguise thyself, that thou be not known to be the wife of Jeroboam; and get thee to Shiloh: behold, there is Ahijah the prophet, which told me that I should be king over this people.
3 And take with thee ten loaves, and cracknels, and a cruse of honey, and go to him: he shall tell thee what shall become of the child.
4 And Jeroboam’s wife did so, and arose, and went to Shiloh, and came to the house of Ahijah. But Ahijah could not see; for his eyes were set by reason of his age.
5 And the Lord said unto Ahijah, Behold, the wife of Jeroboam cometh to ask a thing of thee for her son; for he is sick: thus and thus shalt thou say unto her: for it shall be, when she cometh in, that she shall feign herself to be another woman.
6 And it was so, when Ahijah heard the sound of her feet, as she came in at the door, that he said, Come in, thou wife of Jeroboam; why feignest thou thyself to be another? for I am sent to thee with heavy tidings.

The WORD of the LORD is full of intrigue. In chapter 13 we learned of a prophet who was lied to, deceived and died for disobeying.

Here we read of an attempt of deception by Jeroboam and his wife, however GOD knows all things and even though the Ahijah was old and blind, he walked by faith and not by sight.

We must be careful to not be fooled by gifts; she brought bread, cakes and honey all in the name of deception. However the gifts did not range the words or judgement of GOD. The backslidden, idol worship of Jeroboam had already determined the outcome of the circumstance, sin still causes death.

GOD desires our life; heart, mind, soul and body; we need repentance today like never before, all of us need to repent on a daily basis and on rough days we need to repent multiple times a day. GOD is seeking a PURE heart.

  12. 26 And he took away the treasures of the house of the Lord, and the treasures of the king’s house; he even took away all: and he took away all the shields of gold which Solomon had made.
27 And king Rehoboam made in their stead brasen shields, and committed them unto the hands of the chief of the guard, which kept the door of the king’s house.

Sin will reduce a standard of living to nothing. As we see here, due to their sinful lifestyle, Judah’s standard of living (standards) has been reduced greatly, Even the king’s standards. Noone is above sin. Sin kills. Today we see it all the time, with people who are addicted to sin. Millionaires are brought to be homeless due to their sin. Buisness owners become prision inmates due to their sins. Families are torn apart because of sin.
Just as Rehoboam did, when sin took all his treasures away, we often compromise our standards rather than simply repenting and working to get back to God and to the standards we once held.

  13. This chapter illustrates heading. The kings direction was not towards the Lord and as such cost not only self but family and all the people; “And he shall give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam, who did sin, and who made Israel to sin.” Everyone will follow someone and/or something, the Word as well as history is full of this fact. A person desiring to please God and spend eternity with the Lord and one that cares about more than oneself will set a course towards Jesus. All the more why we should pray for our Pastor and leaders and follow the man of God’s heading (direction) towards salvation. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  14. In verses 1-3, Jeroboam knows where the answer/healing/salvation can be found for his son. There were several things wrong here though: 1) He should have repented and gone himself; 2) He shouldn’t have tried to buy the answer with gifts; 3) He shouldn’t have sent his wife with deception (disguised). God had already warned Ahijah, the prophet, of what was coming and had given him the message firsthand that he was to give to Jeroboam’s wife. The Lord knows all things and we can’t hide anything from him. We must follow the commands of the Lord and if we falter, Repent!

  15. ILove to eat tuna fish sandwiches with Jesus

When Solomon was king there was peace. Solomon was so strong militarily that few wanted to mess with him… But here in this passage we find the king of egypt plundering Jerusalem. THE FLESH TOOK OVER.

  16. Then go to the prophet Ahijah at Shiloh—the man who told me I would become king.
There are many topics within this chapter. The prophet Ahijah was old and could not see. No matter how terrible your physical condition is, having a spiritual relationship with God is what matters. God will give you words to use when needed. So continue to pray and worship God, and listen for his voice.

  17. Compromise Is Not An Option

This seems like a chapter of compromise and it’s effects. Not to detract from the seriousness of the subject but I’m reminded of the potato chip slogan “once you pop, you just can’t stop” implying you can’t have *just one.* Compromise must not be an option for us as once that path begins, it usually is a slippery slope that quickly leads to one thing after another.

Like we’ve heard it taught, we must inspect what we expect; if we believe something is wrong, but expect to have to use it at some point for our advantage (just one example would be lying), then we have not fully rid ourselves of it (even if we don’t do it regularly), we’ve only put it away for a “rainy day” but still have it in our toolkit. If we make something an option, we will likely use it at some point, revealing that even while our hands may not have been guilty all along, our heart was.

Pure hands begin with a pure heart, impure hands begin with an impure heart.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. (James 4:7, 8 KJV)

  18. 16 And he shall give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam, who did sin, and who made Israel to sin.

A perfect example of how are choices effect all those around us and not just ourselves. A leaders choice weighs heavier on them because of the influence they have on their followers. We must be careful of our choices and pray about them because they effect others around us as much as ourselves.

  19. 26 And he took away the treasures of the house of the Lord, and the treasures of the king’s house; he even took away all: and he took away all the shields of gold which Solomon had made.
27 And king Rehoboam made in their stead brasen shields, and committed them unto the hands of the chief of the guard, which kept the door of the king’s house.

We must not take away what God is trying to do in our lives. As did the enemy, when we come into the church, do we make a false worship? I believe some do ,and it is for this reason that some cannot get the victory in their lives. I pray that the worship that I give to God is whole heartedly genuine and not false.

  20. We should teach married couple to do all in the Lord. We know he knows all things. Many deceptive relationships have gone sour because God is left out. Adam and Eve were living a lie.Jeroboam and his wife tried to deceive even a prophet of God. And Ananias and Sapphira tried to deceive The Holy Spirit. They all lost in the end.Children pick up more than we realize and a bad relationship can be carried on to the next generation. We need to watch our walk and our tongue. I wish I had lived the way I should have,Life may have been easier for me and my children.

  21. You can from God but you cannot hide. Be sure your sins will find you out.

Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure. KJV 1 Timothy 5:22

Be careful who are you listening to and who you are hanging around with.

  22. 7 Go, tell Jeroboam, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Forasmuch as I exalted thee from among the people, and made thee prince over my people Israel,

    8 And rent the kingdom away from the house of David, and gave it thee: and yet thou hast not been as my servant David, who kept my commandments, and who followed me with all his heart, to do that only which was right in mine eyes;

9 But hast done evil above all that were before thee: for thou hast gone and made thee other gods, and molten images, to provoke me to anger, and hast cast me behind thy back

22 And Judah did evil in the sight of the Lord, and they provoked him to jealousy with their sins which they had committed, above all that their fathers had done.

23 For they also built them high places, and images, and groves, on every high hill, and under every green tree.

Both of the nations if Israel sinned before God. It was their leaders-their Kings- who caused the people to fall away. The sins got so bad that sodomites were tolerated and they did the abominations of the people of the landsowners before them-who God drove out! Rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft-I Sam 15:23, and God eventually sends His judgement and now will drive out His people! How quickly the kingdom that David & Solomon build is all destroyed because of sin. II Sam 1:19: “The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places, how the mighty are fallen!” Lord, help me to have a pure heart so that I can walk upon your holy hill and never let me get to the place that sin or carnality would cause me to fall.

  23. v13 And all Israel shall mourn for him, and bury him: for he only of Jeroboam shall come to the grave, because in him there is found some good thing toward the LORD GOD of Israel in the house of Jeroboam .

Because of their disobedience only the child shall come to the grave. All the rest would die violently. Which brings to mind the prophet Jeremiah cursed his birthday ” Jere.20:14&18
Wherefore came I forth out of the womb to see labor and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?

A problem that makes you want to weep instead of shout. ( living a life dishonoring
    the LORD never repenting.)
    iRepent
    iPray

    iHonor

  24. You cannot disguise yourself from God. The Bible declares He knows our coming in and our going out, our downsitting and uprising. We can’t hide whatever we are doing from the Lord, who has the very hairs of our head numbered. He has an all seeing eye. Jeraboam thought his wife could trick the man of God, but God revealed to His man what was about to happen and what to answer. All we must do as His children, is take the time to inquire of the Lord. He has the answer for every situation and can reveal it through the pages of His word and prayer.

Lord us to do what is right in your sight that we might be a blessed people, rather than do evil, after our own desires, and be cursed.

  25. 9 But hast done evil above all that were before thee: for thou hast gone and made thee other gods, and molten images, to provoke me to anger, and hast cast me behind thy back:

10 Therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of Jeroboam, and will cut off from Jeroboam him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel, and will take away the remnant of the house of Jeroboam, as a man taketh away dung, till it be all gone.

Be not deceived God is not mocked, whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap.

Sin has a way of catching up with us.

  26. v30 And there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all their days.

As christains, brethren the church ( the mother
cannot continue in the spirit of discord. Spiritually speaking we would raise a bunch of unhealthy children. Someday they will be future church mothers. What kind of children will they have?
Don’t let your soul get cold. Dont get your eyes on the things of this world, but contribute your strength to the spiritual mother church
A healthly mother gives birth to healthly
    children .
    We have HIS NAME JESUS
    WE HAVE HIS BLOOD
    iPray
Thank you JESUS for spiritual strength

  27. You have to take care of your blessing. God can bless you and then take it away because you dont take care of it.

    Luke 16:2
And he called him , and said unto him , How is it that I hear this of thee ? give an account of thy stewardship ; for thou mayest be no longer steward .

  28. Q: What happens when you don’t follow God?

    A: 17 And Jeroboam’s wife arose, and departed, and came to Tirzah: and when she came to the threshold of the door, the child died;
    (you lose your future)

A: 10 Therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of Jeroboam, and will cut off from Jeroboam him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel, and will take away the remnant of the house of Jeroboam, as a man taketh away dung, till it be all gone. 11 Him that dieth of Jeroboam in the city shall the dogs eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the fowls of the air eat: for the Lord hath spoken it.
(you will die, and your family. It will not be nice because it says the animals were to eat them)

A: 20 And the days which Jeroboam reigned were two and twenty years: and he slept with his fathers, and Nadab his son reigned in his stead.
    (you get replaced)

A: 26 And he took away the treasures of the house of the Lord, and the treasures of the king’s house; he even took away all: and he took away all the shields of gold which Solomon had made.
(God takes back or has some one else take back the promises and riches he has given you)

A: 30 And there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all their days.
(you have to always fight for what should have been yours all along, this means you lose some along the way)

  29.  12-13 “And that’s it. Go on home—the minute you step foot in town, the boy will die. Everyone will come to his burial, mourning his death. He is the only one in Jeroboam’s family who will get a decent burial; he’s the only one for whom God, the God of Israel, has a good word to say.

And that’s it go home. Imagine if that’s what the man of God tells you. No negotiations no second chances.

  30. 16 And he shall give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam, who did sin, and who made Israel to sin.

Jeroboam’s sin did not just effect him but effected all of Isreal. Sin does not just hurt the sinner but radiates to all the sinner has influence over.

  31. 5 And the Lord said unto Ahijah, Behold, the wife of Jeroboam cometh to ask a thing of thee for her son; for he is sick: thus and thus shalt thou say unto her: for it shall be, when she cometh in, that she shall feign herself to be another woman.

Be Sure your sins will find you out…
God will reveal to his people things when needful. The one thing Jeroboam’s wife forgot about was that you can hide some things from man for a period of time but you can never hide from God.
