1 Kings 17

1 And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the Lord God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.

And the word of the Lord came unto him, saying,

Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.

And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.

So he went and did according unto the word of the Lord: for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.

And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.

And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.

And the word of the Lord came unto him, saying,

Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.

10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

11 And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand.

12 And she said, As the Lord thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

13 And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.

14 For thus saith the Lord God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the Lord sendeth rain upon the earth.

15 And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days.

16 And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by Elijah.

17 And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him.

18 And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son?

19 And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.

20 And he cried unto the Lord, and said, O Lord my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son?

21 And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the Lord, and said, O Lord my God, I pray thee, let this child’s soul come into him again.

22 And the Lord heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.

23 And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother: and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth.

24 And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in thy mouth is truth.

  1. The widow woman had some kind of faith. Knowing that she only had enough flour for her and her son and yet she obeyed the man of God. What would happen if she hadn’t given/obeyed the man of God? The widow woman’s faith was tested by giving the last morsel of bread. What would happen if we as saints of God obeyed the man of God (Pastor) with that kind of faith? But instead we as christians/saints of God have a hard time walking by faith.

    Hebrews 11:1 KJV
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen.

    2 Corinthians 5:7 KJV
For we walk by faith not by sight

  2. ***Don’t look at the drought in your life but focus on the Rain that is to come.***

The Rain is coming, The Rain is coming, The Former & Latter Rain is coming.

13 And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.

The key word is FIRST. Bring it FIRST, your offering, Bring it FIRST, your praise, Bring it FIRST no matter what drought we have, Bring it FIRST!!!! It took me a while to learn and understand that but I know that if I bring it FIRST my oil and meal will never run out no matter what this world says.

    Deuteronomy 11:13-14
13 And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the Lord your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul,

14 That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil.

So after the drought the Rain is coming!!! The Rain is coming!!! & I don’t want an umbrella I want to get drenched in it. Soaked by it. & everyone around me too.

John 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

Are you ready for the RAIN?

  3. 11 And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand.

***** The Lord is Faithful ******

    Psalms 37:25

I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.

    Philippians 4:19
But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

You know as I was thinking of this scripture, I began to think of Bro. Garcia’s parents. They had 12 children, it made me wonder how were they able to feed them all, clothe them, and whatever need they had as a family. But GOD has been faithful to them, and US as well.

    Thank you Jesus 🙏

  4. 18 And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son?

Sometimes our trust in God, the message preached, the counsel given, even the man of God or other leadership, is thin and we disregard the signs screaming “you can trust!” and instead leap at the first opportunity to assume that continuing to trust would be an error. It’s like we heard preached about how things that pollute our heart rob our clear vision of God.

Holding on to past hurts, misunderstandings, failing, etc can create an attitude of unmerited distrust, which leaves our faith crippled and strangles the life out of what God would do in our lives. It’s like a garden that’s fraught with thorns and briars because we’re deceived into thinking those ugly weeds will be a hedge of protection for us, since nobody would want to mess with a garden of thorns, yet really it just chokes out the good. It’s a garden where we’ve invited all the birds to come so that they eat up any bad seed before it grows, since “being too hopeful is asking for trouble,” yet the birds fly straight for the good seeds, not the ones fallen from the thorny weed plants that are difficult to get to and unfavorable. It’s a garden where the ground is unworked, since you don’t want to invest too much into potential/”probable” failure, so the good that does manage to grow is left thirsty with shallow roots and no chance of survival when the heat comes.

These attitudes can get buried in us and even subtly distort our vision for so long we forget our vision isn’t clear and begin to operate as if they were truth. It sometimes takes a situation that gets right at the heart of our stumbling, to address it head-on, before those old lies can come crashing down and we can let go of the things that pollute the garden of our heart.

24 And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in thy mouth is truth.

“Now by this…” after being ready to throw in the towel and call it all (including miraculous provision and blessing) a setup, a sham, a trap, a death sentence… suddenly she sees. Our mess may simply be a suddenly moment waiting to happen.

  5. ILove to eat blueberry muffins with Jesus

It’s not the need God sees, it’s the Faith.

In this time of famine, there were many other widows in the same situation as this widow.

But I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his own hometown.
“Certainly there were many needy widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the heavens were closed for three and a half years, and a severe famine devastated the land. Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them. He was sent instead to a foreigner—a widow of Zarephath in the land of Sidon. (Luke 4:24-26 KJV)

So, there were many needs but God didn’t send Elijah to meet needs, he sent Elijah to meet Faith.

8 And the word of the Lord came unto him, saying,

9 Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.

FOR THIS WIDOW WOMAN TO PAY HER TITHE FIRST, TO FEED THE MAN OF GOD FIRST PROVED HER FAITH.

  6. GREAT FAITH = GREAT TRUST

9 Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.

Out of nowhere Elijah the servant of the LORD appears with a WORD of judgement from GOD. I am thankful for the GOD of out of nowhere. Elijah declares the drought and then is partaker of the drought when the brook dries up. It requires FAITH and HUMILITY to be fed by a Bird; unless of course you are able to see that you are being fed by GOD through a Bird. It requires FAITH to watch your resources dry up and remain committed to the cause. Elijah did these.

However GREAT FAITH did not manifest itself until the situation involved another person.

    1. Elijah had to ask for food. (A promised provision from GOD; but Elijah had enough sense to know “GOD was UP to SOMETHING”.)

    2. Elijah had to ask a widow for food. (The WORD clearly teaches that man is expected to care for widows not widows care for man “GOD is UP to SOMETHING”.)

    3. The widow could see only death for her and her son, society teaches to keep everything to yourself, but even this widow knew “GOD is UP to SOMETHING”.)

GREAT FAITH requires GREAT TRUST manifests GREAT HUMILITY.

FAITH is required to SPEAK, TRUST is required to OBEY and HUMILITY is required to ACT.

FAITH, TRUST and HUMILITY is required from both parties for the MIRACLE to manifest.

  7. 15 And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days.–If she would have not done exactly what Elijah said she would not have been obedient and it would not have worked. OBEDIANCE!
19 And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.-
Many times in this book when it refers to going up or high places it is talking about idol worship. In this case it is because one, that is where his room was, two he had privacy, and three he was seeking the closeness of God.
24 And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in thy mouth is truth.–how many miracles did she need before she believed? What kept her in unbelief? Here she is with her son about to die and a man comes and says feed me first. Then he tells her that her meal will not run out if she does. In verse 15 it says that they did eat many days. If she knew that was her last cake until she died and they all ate for many days, why unbelief?

This story and the Shunammite woman are very similar
    1.
And he said unto him, Say now unto her, Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care; what is to be done for thee? wouldest thou be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of the host? And she answered, I dwell among mine own people. (2 Kings 4:13 KJV)
Both women care for the man of God.
    2.
And the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season that Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life. (2 Kings 4:17 KJV)
    Both woman had a son.
    3.
And when he had taken him, and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then died. (2 Kings 4:20 KJV)
    Both sons died.
    4.
And she went up, and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, and went out. (2 Kings 4:21 KJV)
Both sons were taken up into the man of God’s room
    5
And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he stretched himself upon the child; and the flesh of the child waxed warm. (2 Kings 4:34 KJV)
Both men of God layed on the child
    6
Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes. (2 Kings 4:35 KJV)
Both sons came back to life
    7
Then she went in, and fell at his feet, and bowed herself to the ground, and took up her son, and went out. (2 Kings 4:37 KJV)
Both mothers were in awe of the miracle they wanted

  8. v6 And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.

  11. It was obvious that the widow lady had very little flour and oil. Even the fire she was building was small and consisted of only 2 sticks, that wouldn’t last long in my fire pit. She was hesitant at first and had to be persuaded by Elijah to share the last meal. However she submitted to Elijah and God blessed her. Many of us have to be persuaded by Pastor to do what God is calling us to do.Let the Word go into our hearts instead of over our heads!

  12. Jesus gives 3 promises, when we put our Trust in Him that He will take care of in our daily lives and needs, So that way we can stay in tuned with Him 24/7!

    1. Don’t worry about tomorrow Mat 6:34
    2. Don’t worry about your life, food, drink, clothing. Mt 6:25,31; Lk 12:29
    3. Don’t have to worry about what to say to officals. Mat 10:19 Mrk 13:11

    2 John 1:6
And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.

    Philippians 4:6
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

    Heb 11:6
And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.

  13. 24 And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in thy mouth is truth.

And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen. -Mark 16:20

I believe the Lord wants to do notable miracles in our church, both within the four walls and outside the confines of our church building. The Lord will confirm his word and show himself mighty. It is up to us, the Church to proclaim his power and authority.

God is great and greatly to be praised!! Let’s see God do great things in this last day revival.

Speak revival and God will bring it to past.

  14. IT is comforting to see Elijah come onto the scene in this chapter. And then it gets better to know that there are nore men of God – but they are hid in caves. It is surprising though, that when Elijah invites the men of Baal to a match to see who is the true God-that the people called there to watch actually seemed clueless whether Jehovah was the true God. It has been a few generations now of living without the laws of God and this generation had to be shown that God is real and that Baal was false. This world today & it’s youmg people are like the generation in this chapter-they need a show down so to speak with what they call god and with the true God of heaven, so their hearts and minds can be won, and so they can be saved.
We must do everything we can to portray the true God to this world by the way we walk, talk and act-everywhere we go-every day.

  15. The blessings of obedience.

13 And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.

What would have happened if the woman did not do what the man of God told her to do? Would her son have lived? When God asks us to do something, we need to do it. We don’t know what God has in store for us. Many times He is testing us before our blessing to see what will our response be before the blessing. Through the test comes our testimony, therefore in all things give thanks. I believe part of the reason why the boy was raised up was because his mother did what she did in the beginning. Remember that your obedience now may become your blessing tomorrow.

  16. 14 For thus saith the Lord God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the Lord sendeth rain upon the earth.

15 And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days.

16 And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by Elijah.

This chapter is a beautiful example of obediance to the word of God and serving the man of God. Without question or doubting she gave her last to the man of God… And she never ran out or went hungry again. It pays to be obediant.

  17. I read Proverbs 23:17dont eat at the table of sinners……very good vs it talks about listening to what everything they say to heart. Beware! A big flag should come up when they start telling us what we should or shouldn’t do. Always the word the Lord JESUS and the man of God puts in ourlives this is why I dont listen to family too much. JESUS is the true vine the only thing that can set us FREE!
    imourn for JESUS.

  18. This chapter illustrates preparation. Elijah was prepared for what was to come, through his devotion to the Lord, and God sustained Elijah because of his preparation. There will come days of drought for everyone at some point in ones life; however the difference of surviving and/or not surviving will be if we have prepared ourselves. Preparation comes from reading, hearing and abiding to the Word, praying, fasting and assembling together as it is written, too worship the Lord. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  19. How to stop the rain

I do not see a direct command from God to Elijah that it would not rain. I do see a man of God, who stood boldly before a wicked king and proclaimed by faith it would not rain.

I believe that the following verses were what was necessary for Elijah to go through for this drought to happen.

Ask boldly, bodily live, boldy obey!

  20. Vs 18-24 The widow woman seems to forget the blessing that God had provided her throught the man of God in sustaining her and her son with food. Then because Elijah brings the boy back to her alive, it is then she proclaims him to be a man of God. How many miracles does it take for someone to believe?

  21. The widow woman had a choice, she could listen to what the prophet was saying or she could have ignored it. She of course choose to listen and obey. When we do what is asked of the man of God, God has a blessing in store for us. We must remember to lay aside what we think is best and do what God has put before us. Obedience will always result in a blessing that is overflowing.

  22. Elijah followed the Lords commands even though he didn’t agree with what he asked him to do. Elijah is OBEDIENT he trusts the Lord no matter how hard it may be for hiim to do what he is asked to do.

Lord life is hard, speak to me Lord, I want to do your will no matter what other people say. I seek you.

  23. And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by Elijah. (1 Kings 17:16 KJV)

The word of the Lord is true. Elijah just spoke the truth that the Lord had spoken to him. We call it crazy faith but it is the faith that God expects us to have. If we really believe God and his word it’s not crazy at all to expect miraculous from him. It’s laid out very simple here. If God said it, then it’s true. You can believe it, and act upon it.

    iBelieve

  24. And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son? And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.

As a woman and a mother I can understand why the widow spoke out of her emotions. She had lost her husband at some point and now she is holding her only child breathless to her. The pain she was feeling must have been overwhelming. Hurting people tend to hurt others. She lashed out at the man of God only seeing her immediate pain HOWEVER in the midst of her anguish she obliged the man of Gods request to give him her son. It hurt. She didn’t understand. The boy was dead. She probably desired to hold on to him as long as possible, but she once again trusted the man of God despite her circumstance and pain. Had she not trusted the man of God her miracle would have never happened. God gave the miracle after hearing the cries of the man of God but had she not sacrificed then the miracle process would not have started. We need to trust our pastor despite our life circumstances so that we will be in place for our miracle to happen.

  25. Following the example of your elders.

When the Shunamite ladies son died Elisha laid upon him twice and he came back to life. Elisha didn’t have to worry wether or not it would work because Elija sets the example in this chapter. When you are looking for God to do the miraculous look to your elders.

  26. This chapter really shows faith by both Elijah and the widow woman. Elijah obeyed God’s orders, even if he didn’t understand or comprehend how his provision was to come about. The widow woman knew and saw what she had materially; but, still obeyed. Many go by sight and are not willing to take that step of faith. Lord help us to was always obey your voice and keep our focus on you as you are in control of all things.
