2 Kings 1

1 Then Moab rebelled against Israel after the death of Ahab.

And Ahaziah fell down through a lattice in his upper chamber that was in Samaria, and was sick: and he sent messengers, and said unto them, Go, enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron whether I shall recover of this disease.

But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say unto them, Is it not because there is not a God in Israel, that ye go to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron?

Now therefore thus saith the Lord, Thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die. And Elijah departed.

And when the messengers turned back unto him, he said unto them, Why are ye now turned back?

And they said unto him, There came a man up to meet us, and said unto us, Go, turn again unto the king that sent you, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Is it not because there is not a God in Israel, that thou sendest to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron? therefore thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.

And he said unto them, What manner of man was he which came up to meet you, and told you these words?

And they answered him, He was an hairy man, and girt with a girdle of leather about his loins. And he said, It is Elijah the Tishbite.

Then the king sent unto him a captain of fifty with his fifty. And he went up to him: and, behold, he sat on the top of an hill. And he spake unto him, Thou man of God, the king hath said, Come down.

10 And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I be a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.

11 Again also he sent unto him another captain of fifty with his fifty. And he answered and said unto him, O man of God, thus hath the king said, Come down quickly.

12 And Elijah answered and said unto them, If I be a man of God, let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And the fire of God came down from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.

13 And he sent again a captain of the third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and besought him, and said unto him, O man of God, I pray thee, let my life, and the life of these fifty thy servants, be precious in thy sight.

14 Behold, there came fire down from heaven, and burnt up the two captains of the former fifties with their fifties: therefore let my life now be precious in thy sight.

15 And the angel of the Lord said unto Elijah, Go down with him: be not afraid of him. And he arose, and went down with him unto the king.

16 And he said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Forasmuch as thou hast sent messengers to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron, is it not because there is no God in Israel to enquire of his word? therefore thou shalt not come down off that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.

17 So he died according to the word of the Lord which Elijah had spoken. And Jehoram reigned in his stead in the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah; because he had no son.

18 Now the rest of the acts of Ahaziah which he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

  1. v16 And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast sent messagers to inquire of baalzebub the god of Ekron, is it not because there is no GOD in Israel to inquire of his word? Therefore thou shalt not come down off that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.
v17 ” So he died according to the word of the LORD which Elijah had spoken.”

We cannot not go wrong when we stay in the scriptures. Speak GOD’S WORD, HIS TRUTH
because HIS WORD IS SO CERTAIN .
No matter what the odds are . Could be fifty to one .
    GOD’S WORD IS INFALLIBLE !
    It’s going to happen.

  2. ATQA: Answer The Question Asked

The importance of how we speak to one another is crucial, the 1st captian approached Elijah ‘man of God, the king says “come down” and the 2nd saying “come down at once” and both demands fail because they were threatening. The last thing anyone should want to do, is threaten the man of God. They were seeking to take him by force if necessary, obviously because they had 50 men with them each time. Why were so many soldiers necessary to capture one ‘man of God’?That is if they do not recognize the Lord as God, but instead look to this fake Baal-Zebub the false god of Ekron? The only question the Lord wanted Elijah to ask the king was “Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going off to consult this fake Baal-Zebub?” that created all this drama. The king never answered this question mostly, I believe because he knew the answer. He was literally running away from the Truth. The truth was that God had never left Israel, but he the king forgot God and desired false hope of life, because that’s what false prophets do ‘lie’. I can see how in a time where a person is desperate for healing they look to that which is most in their favor, even false hope. In recieving the prophecy of his death, the king developed the desire to capture and speak to Elijah. The king didn’t dispay enough faith in God to trust the man of God at his word. The first 2 captians where burnt up with fire along with their 50 men, but this 3rd captain asked for mercy for his life and that of his men. He humbled himself, rather than being demanding and threatening was what triggered the Lord to allow Elijah to go with these men and not the first 2, because the Lord can see the heart of the captains and their intent to do the man of God harm for the Lord says “do not be afraid of him” of the 3rd captian in vs15. Our approach can make all the difference between being heard and accepted, or threatened and rejected. If God asks us a question, its not becuase he doesn’t know the answer, it’s not even that we don’t know the answer…rather that can we confess that we are wrong, and change our actions? The 3rd captian did, he saw that it would be insanity to try and demand of the man of God a 3rd time, but rather understood the flaw in communication and confessed his need of his mercy and attendance.

  3. It is all in the approach!!!! Reverence & Respect above all!!!!
We should never disrespect the man of God!!!!

Elijah had no fear & in the same way neither should we, for the same GOD that was with Elijah is with us & lives within us. In the same way, we should not just come demanding or boasting specially after we have had the audacity of putting other things (idols of this world) before HIM. That was what the first 2 captains & their 50s did and what did it get them… fried!!!! Now it works both ways, if we have put God first in our lives in the same way that Elijah has, come the moment or struggles we can just call upon HIM & and He will answer with fire from heaven. We should never approach our Lord with nothing more than REVERENCE, RESPECT, and HONOR and HE will reward us with HIS FIRE!!!

Your attitude towards the man of God not only affects you, but all that are following you.

102 men never made it home to kiss their wives.
102 men never made it home to watch thier children grow up.
102 men never saw thier mothers or fathers again
102 men were lost because of the arrogance of their leader toward the man of God…

A man’s pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit. (Proverbs 29:23 KJV)

  5. When God says something to me ilisten.
I read a scripture this morning that is helped me when I go thru battles and I remember that its God’s JESUS’battle not mine.

    John 19:10-11/KJV-
10/ Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have the power to crusify thee, and the power to release thee?
11/Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were giving thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

  6. INTERCEPTED BY THE MAN OF GOD

3 But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say unto them, Is it not because there is not a God in Israel, that ye go to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron?
4 Now therefore thus saith the Lord, Thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die. And Elijah departed.
5 And when the messengers turned back unto him, he said unto them, Why are ye now turned back?

The process and procedure had been followed numerous times. They had sought the idol for answers, they had worshipped the false GOD consistently. This day probably started off like any other, they were servants obeying their King. GOD chose this day to intercept them.

This day however the LORD decided to step in and speak. Notice the attributes of the man that GOD used:

    1. He LISTENED – He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit says.
    2. He OBEYED – Obedience is better than sacrifice
    3. He SPOKE – what the Lord saith unto me, that will I speak.
    4. He STOOD – Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them:

Fear and intimidation did not sway the man of GOD. We must be ready and prepared to step in and prophesy to those who are seeking counsel from idols; in GOD’s time.

I am thankful for the day GOD chose to intercept me, thank you JESUS for your Grace and Mercy.

  7. This chapter illustrates reverence. Ahaziah sought another god for healing because he no reverence for the true King (Jesus) of healing. The captains and their men were consumed by fire because they had no reverence for the man of God. Many unfortunate things happen today because another god is sought and not the true God (Jesus). Unfortunate things also happen because people have no reverence for the man of God. One must merely read the Word to see how God feels, which we all should revere. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  8. It’s all in our attitude and our action when coming before God to help us.God’s reaction, which comes thru the man of God is based on our action, are we arrogant or meek and humble.Fifty men’s life were spared just because the captain had saw the mistake of the men that had gone before him .We can learn from other folks mistake and not make the same one,and our situation will come out a victory, not a defeat!!!

  9. We should take everything to the Lord and not just seek the advice of men. We should assuredly inquire with the man of God in our life to give us insight.

  10. 2 And Ahaziah fell down through a lattice in his upper chamber that was in Samaria, and was sick: and he sent messengers, and said unto them, Go, enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron whether I shall recover of this disease.

    Oh NO!!!!

No false god can heal!! This king knows that, so why would you want to send your messengers to baalzebub? Only the One True GOD can heal! Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. V.4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image..v.5 Thou shalt not bow thyself unto them..

Lately I have seen some of my ‘Christian’ friends looking into the Horoscope for their lives. And it makes me angry seeing that, we need to be looking to God for our lives, for He knows our Future.

  11. 16 And he said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Forasmuch as thou hast sent messengers to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron, is it not because there is no God in Israel to enquire of his word? therefore thou shalt not come down off that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.

“There was not a God in Israel, therefore…”

Just imagine, what if it had been: “There is a God in Israel, therefore…”

And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread. And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually. Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither. (2 Kings 4:8-10 KJV)

Do our lives “build a room” for God and the man of God to dwell in? The way we live can build a place of remembrance not just for us but even for those coming after us.

And when he had taken him, and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then died. And she went up, and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, and went out. (2 Kings 4:20, 21 KJV)

And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed. He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the Lord. And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he stretched himself upon the child; and the flesh of the child waxed warm. Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes. (2 Kings 4:32-35 KJV)

In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came unto him, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Set thine house in order: for thou shalt die, and not live. Then Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall, and prayed unto the Lord, And said, Remember now, O Lord, I beseech thee, how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore. Then came the word of the Lord to Isaiah, saying, Go, and say to Hezekiah, Thus saith the Lord, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen years. And I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria: and I will defend this city. (Isaiah 38:1-6 KJV)

    Excerpt from Internet

“Baal Zebub, the healing god of Ekron, later became one word–Beelzebub–which came to represent evil and idolatry in the New Testament of the Bible.”
-Excerpt taken from- “Syria” by Coleman South, 1995

Beelzebub is best known as the god of the Philistines, He ruled over the city of Ekron. He is second in command to Satan. The Ancient Philistines worshiped Him under the name “Baalzebub.” Beelzebub is “lord over all that Flies”. Wherever he was worshipped, he was known as god of the weather and meteorology. He also controlled the airways when the Nephilim came to Earth. His name was perverted by the Hebrews to mean “Lord of the Flies.”
Beelzebub takes care of infighting between dedicated Satanists. Satan wants unity and Beelzebub enforces this. He can be very strict as Satan does not approve of dedicated Satanists cursing each other.
Beelzebub is the Patron of all of the Orient (Far East), Martial Arts and Asian Culture. He was Prince of the Seraphim and He has a raspy voice.

  13. But if thine heart turn away, so that thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them; -Deuteronomy 30:17
I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish, and that ye shall not prolong your days upon the land, whither thou passest over Jordan to go to possess it. -Deuteronomy 30:18
I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: -Deuteronomy 30:19
That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them. -Deuteronomy 30:20

Why not repent and call on the mercy of God. Instead he decided to fight the Man of God. There is no way you can win that fight.

    Repent!

Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. -Proverbs 18:21

  14. Our world is strikingly similar to the world described in 2 Kings. National and local governments do not seek God, and countries are tormented by war. Many people follow the false gods of technology, materialism, and war. In our chaotic and corrupt world, we can turn to examples such as David, Elijah, and Elisha, who were devoted to God’s high honor and moral law and who brought about renewal and change in their society. For nations to do God’s will, they need individuals who will do God’s work. If our heart is committed to God, he can work through us to accomplish the work he has called us to do.

  15. V8 it us Elijah
All the men said was a few things that Elijah looked like and the king said its Elijah.
Now in that day I’m sure many men was hairy had leather on him but there was somthing that the king knew that’s Elijah I know who that is. I believe he knew because of the relationship Elijah had with God that people knew he was Gods servant
Elijah means “the Lord is my God” I believe there was more then just saying Elijah when the king thought and realized who it was he probly could everything Elijah did and stands for and he says that’s Elijah I need him.
What do people think of when they hear my name or hear somthing about me? He’s a Christian? Oh that guy or maybe yes he follows Jesus Christ what am I putting out to the world? Godly things or things or this world?

  16. Depending on your attitude towards your man of God determines if God will answer your prayers or not. We need to pray considering our needs as well as seeking advice from our man of God.
Thank God for a Pastor that will guide us and lead us in the right direction.

  17. 6 And they said unto him, There came a man up to meet us, and said unto us, Go, turn again unto the king that sent you, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Is it not because there is not a God in Israel, that thou sendest to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron? therefore thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.

God will use any means necessary to get the message to you. Weither it be from His word, the man of God, or even a donkey, He will let you know what is the next step. It is up to you to make the decision to listen or not. I know personally many people , and have been through this myself, where I have been told to do something and didn’t. I can say from experience that it is not a fun place to be. LISTEN to what God is trying to say to you.

  18. It’s not nice to fool with Father God! Many of our world leaders still seek after false Gods. Abraham Lincoln had seances seeking advice from familiar spirits. Ronald Reagans wife called upon spiritual advisors to help the president with his presidency and decision making. I am not talking about Godly advisors but those who read horoscopes and such as God condemns. Many Of our Presidents were Masons. We as a people have been blessed but behind all our blessings we also have been cursed by allowing sin to be the rule of the land. Even Israel in its ‘Democracy” has allowed Gay parades to take place in their secular society. We shall not go unpunished as a nation! Like Elijah the two witnesses in the last days will not be recognized by One hour Martinizing, heavy starch or bright ties. They will stand out as different and not be recognized even by christians. Socially unacceptable until Godstarts working through them. Then they will be feared for the miracles they perform. Put to death and then be raised again on the third day. Praise God!!!

  19. It’s important to go before the one and only true God. When decisions are made to inquire about healing, there is only one healer.

  20. 2 And Ahaziah fell down through a lattice in his upper chamber that was in Samaria, and was sick: and he sent messengers, and said unto them, Go, enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron whether I shall recover of this disease.

Circumventing God ….. why inquire of a false god, when he could have inquired of the Lord through Elisha? This is evident of many people in our day and hour. They don’t want to know what God has to say about their situations from the Word, they want to inquire of someone else’s opinion. As seen in this chapter, seeking after the false god brought death to the king, seeking to please ourselves, or have our ears scratched by what is pleasing to the ear, can bring spiritual death to a soul.

  21. Your steps are ordered

One day Israel’s new king, Ahaziah, fell through the latticework of an upper room at his palace in Samaria and was seriously injured. So he sent messengers to the temple of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, to ask whether he would recover. (2 Kings 1:2 NLT)

When you are a child of the King he directs your steps. And He is with you every step of the way. There is no need to send messengers to inquire if you’ll recover after a fall, because he is standing by your side.  Just talk to your best friend and Master our Lord Jesus Christ.

The tip of your mouth is at ear of Jesus. You never waste time in prayer- Sis Chennault

Just Pray! The steps of POFW have been ordered!

The LORD directs the steps of the godly.
He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall,
for the LORD holds them by the hand. (Psalm 37:23, 24 NLT)

  22. Just like Elijah said, “If I be a man of God, let fire consume”

True men and women of God will be consumed with the fire of the Holy Ghost. When we are consumed, we are clothed in his spirit. We put on Christ. The fire spreads to others, burns away impurities, and ignites passion.

  23. Anthony.
I think that why the two captains got burned it was because they did not know Jesus.

    Anna
I like this story but it is sad at the end. I think it is sad because the guy died after he got sick( it was a bad guy–michael).

    Michael
A king died and then the next king came and then he fell through the roof and got sick. And the man of God said he was going to die. And 100 men came with two captains and they died. Then one caption came with 50 men and he said please dont kill me and the bad guy died.

    Saylor
The man died because he got real bad sick and died.

    Joseph
The king fell off the stuff and died and he did not come back to life.

    Olivia
    He died.

    Humility
Humility saved the third captain and his 50. He did not go like the other 2 captains and say the king told me to tell you, now do it. He said I know what you can do, have mercy on me. Humility saves us all daily. When we realize that God is I’m control of everything we take a humble place when we don’t try to run things because he needs help. Be more humble. God does not need you to tell him your way of how to help him out.

  24. Then Moab rebelled against Israel after the death of Ahab. And Ahaziah fell down through a lattice in his upper chamber that was in Samaria, and was sick: and he sent messengers, and said unto them, Go, enquire of Baal–zebub the god of Ekron whether I shall recover of this disease. But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say unto them, Is it not because there is not a God in Israel, that ye go to enquire of Baal–zebub the god of Ekron? Now therefore thus saith the Lord, Thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die. And Elijah departed. And when the messengers turned back unto him, he said unto them, Why are ye now turned back? (2 Kings 1:1-5 KJV)

It’s sad how idle minded we are that we seek answers in places that don’t matter rather than receiving and believing from the one whose word truly matters

  25. God sent Elijah to Ahaziah to let him know he wasn’t going to get back up and was going to die. Idols is what Ahaziah trusted in.

There is only one God, Lord I will seek you when I am strong and seek you when I am weak.

  26. Knowing who you are by what you wear

And they answered him, He was an hairy man, and girt with a girdle of leather about his loins. And he said, It is Elijah the Tishbite.

I don’t encourage anyone to be a “hairy man” but the king knew Elijah by how he was dressed. We as Pentecostals should be known by what we wear, or don’t wear.

  27. In this chapter we see God is a jealous God. He proves himself to all those who doubted him.sadly by the time they knew who the God it was too late.God always proves himself to his people.

  28. In the beginning of this chapter, Ahaziah was not claiming victory or asking God to heal him. Instead, he asked a question as noted in part of verse 2 in the MSG…”Am I going to recover from this accident?” If your going to claim something, claim victory in Jesus name, claim complete healing, claim blessings and not leave an open door for the devil by asking a question.

Verse 10 MSG reads…”Elijah answered the captain of the fifty, “If it’s true that I’m a ‘holy man,’ lightning strike you and your fifty men!” Out of the blue lightning struck and incinerated the captain and his fifty.” Elijah claimed his holiness and the Lord was with him.
