2 Kings 2

1 And it came to pass, when the Lord would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal.

And Elijah said unto Elisha, Tarry here, I pray thee; for theLord hath sent me to Bethel. And Elisha said unto him, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to Bethel.

And the sons of the prophets that were at Bethel came forth to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that theLord will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he said, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.

And Elijah said unto him, Elisha, tarry here, I pray thee; for the Lord hath sent me to Jericho. And he said, As theLord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they came to Jericho.

And the sons of the prophets that were at Jericho came to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Lord will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he answered, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.

And Elijah said unto him, Tarry, I pray thee, here; for theLord hath sent me to Jordan. And he said, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And they two went on.

And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood to view afar off: and they two stood by Jordan.

And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground.

And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.

10 And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.

11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

12 And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.

13 He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan;

14 And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the Lord God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.

15 And when the sons of the prophets which were to view at Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.

16 And they said unto him, Behold now, there be with thy servants fifty strong men; let them go, we pray thee, and seek thy master: lest peradventure the Spirit of the Lordhath taken him up, and cast him upon some mountain, or into some valley. And he said, Ye shall not send.

17 And when they urged him till he was ashamed, he said, Send. They sent therefore fifty men; and they sought three days, but found him not.

18 And when they came again to him, (for he tarried at Jericho,) he said unto them, Did I not say unto you, Go not?

19 And the men of the city said unto Elisha, Behold, I pray thee, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord seeth: but the water is naught, and the ground barren.

20 And he said, Bring me a new cruse, and put salt therein. And they brought it to him.

21 And he went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast the salt in there, and said, Thus saith the Lord, I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or barren land.

22 So the waters were healed unto this day, according to the saying of Elisha which he spake.

23 And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.

24 And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

25 And he went from thence to mount Carmel, and from thence he returned to Samaria.

  1. II Kings 2:9-10 Choose Your Mentor Well And so it was, when they have crossed over , that Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask! What may I do for you , before Iam taken away from you ? Elisha said,” Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me .”So he said , “You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless if you see me when Iam takenfrom you it shall be so for you; but if not , it shall not be so.” Every leader needs mentors.

  2. And Elisha said unto him, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to Bethel.

Following your leader. Was Elijah testing Elisha? Not once, but three times. Supporting the man of God, our pastor is essential in the church. We all do our part in the church. Without supporting our pastor, we are causing division in the church. A leader depends on our support and expects us too meet his requests.

  3. Proverbs 18:24 A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

Elisha knew something was up before the prophets came to tell him that Elijah would be taken away. That is why from the beginning he did not want to leave Elijah’s side. It didn’t matter how many time he was asked to be left alone, Elisha said no I will go with you! It is wonderful to have a sister or a brother stick by you, knowing that no matter what they will be there to support you, pray for you, and never let you go; no matter what circumstances are coming. I have my sister that always tells me what is wrong, always know when I am hurting no matter what smile I put on, she sees beyond my circumstances. I am so thankful for my sister and although we might disagree once in a while, I respect her, and love her.

With great power comes great responsibilities!!!! Lead the way you want to be led, with love, respect, and prayer. Thankful for all my Pastor has taught us and still teaches us everyday and the great fatherly love way that he does it. He does not need to demand respect for when you love you will respect and he will always have our love.

  4. 9 And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.

10 And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.

Sometimes you just gotta tarry for a while in the place you are for the opportunity you want to come. Too often we get anxious with “lack of progress” and do like Sarah and Abraham and try to do our own thing to hurry it along, but here we see the blessing in waiting on God. To everything a season, and for every wait a reason. Our submission is what will carry us through the seemingly impassable river of “not yet” so we can get to the other side into the land of “any moment now…”

11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

  5. FOLLOW YOUR LEADER

2 And Elijah said unto Elisha, Tarry here, I pray thee; for theLord hath sent me to Bethel. And Elisha said unto him, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to Bethel.

Elisha was given the opportunity to rest while the man of GOD (Elijah) continued on his journey. However Elisha refused to stay behind.

We can see this now as a sign of loyalty and commitment. In return Elisha was privileged to take up the Mantle of Elijah and receive the spirit of Elijah. This was a selfless act by Elisha; most young men of GOD desire to make a name for themselves.

Elisha received the miraculous power that Elijah possessed by seeking, following, and demonstrating.

    iPray
    iWork
    iGive

  6. The responsiblity of the mantle.

14 And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the Lord God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.

Many people want the title of minister, and yet they don’t want the responsiblity of it. Not only did Elisha want Elijah’s mantle ,but he also wanted a doulbe portion of it. Therefore he would have to endure more than Elijah. We can look at this and say one of two things. One- I don’t want that type of pressure and responsiblity. Two- I will take the responsiblity and pressure, and know that God is with me. He will not forsake me. There are many opportunities to serve. I am reminded of the passage, “Many are called, but few are chosen.” So the question is are Called ,or are you Chosen?

  7. V3-5 hold your peace! Elisha told the men hold your peace there will be people at times say stop doing that you don’t need to do that and I stop go follow some one who is about to be taken by the Lord. Sometimes people wont understand but I must keep doing what I know to do. It wasn’t intill after he said hold ur peace that he got the power from on high.

  8. ILove to eat breakfast with Jesus

6 And Elijah said unto him, Tarry, I pray thee, here; for theLord hath sent me to Jordan. And he said, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And they two went on.

Stay close to the man of God. He might test your faithfulness, but if you want the double portion, stay close and be loyal.

  9. This chapter illustrates perseverance. Elijah attempted to depart from Elisha for he knew he was to depart this world; however Elisha would not leave his side. Because of Elisha’s perseverance he witnessed the miracle of Elijah departing and a double blessing. If one is willing to be obedient and persevere with the man of God they will also see miracles, and may also receive a blessing. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  10. Follow your leader the one that is leading you the right way. Learn from the one that you are following and never have the attitude I know it all.

  11. v14 And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said,
Where is the LORD GOD OF Elijah ? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.

Praise GOD ! The GOD OF Elijah and Elisha
HE is the same yesterday, today and forever.
Thank YOU JESUS FOR THE HOLY GHOST
HE LIVES WITHIN MY HEART. HE IS EVERY WHERE . HE IS bubbling over in our hearts.
The promise is unto and your children
All that are afar off as many as the LORD should call. That’s what the Holy Ghost does
    Glorifies JESUS!
JESUS commanded them to tarry for Power from on high. Something big is about to
happen a spiritual explosion! HE WILL FILL YOU WITH HIS SPIRIT.
    iPray
    iWait
    iReceive
    iWorship

  12. Elisha knew Elijah was about to leave him and waited for that moment. Elijah wanted to know what Elisha wanted from him before he left. It was his double spirit, he wasn’t being greety he wanted to be greater than Elijah and Elijah knew it was hard and he told him if you stay with me and see me leave your wish will be granted. Elisha not only received Eiljah’s spirit but received respect from Jericho.

What a blessing it was to walk with a man of god and receive his spirit, all is possible through God.

Lord let your light shine on me.

  13. This chapter has a lot to share about staying with your mentor. It has phenomenal references for taking up the mantle. But I think there is a great importance in the last verses about respect. Respect for the man of God not just for his ministry but for him. Be careful with your conversations you never know when a bear I’ll show up

  14. There is nothing more precious to a preacher than a double anointing from his Pastor. Elisha followed Elijah for years all the while waiting for a opportunity to be used like Elijah was.Well after many years he got his chance and was able to retrieve the ephod which symbolizes anointing and priesthood, and a chance to be used in the way he always wanted.

  15. 11. And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

It took a chariot and horses of fire to separate them – sometimes we let a petty situation or a simple statement taken the wrong way to tear us apart. Elisha could have let his feelings be hurt when Elijah kept telling him to stay here, but he saw the bigger picture; that there are blessings to come with togetherness and unity.

    Psalms 133:1
A Song of degrees of David. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

  16. 23 And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.

24 And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

This is why we should not make fun of people.

There’s something about working with a man of God you get to know his spirit and his personality. When the two men approached Elisha and asked if he knew that Elijah’s time was short, he acknowledge that he already knew that. I’m sure he could feel it because Elijah probably could feel it. In order to receive the blessing he had to be in Elijah’s hip pocket, and that’s exactly where we find him when Elijah is whisked away by the chariot. And just as promised he did receive the double portion of Elijah’s spirit. How true it is that many want the double portion of a man of God’s anointing, but too few are willing to make the same sacrificies that the man of God made to obtain that anointing. Help us to make whatever sacrifices are necessary to receive the anointing God has for each of us.

  18. I found it interesting how Elisha was following Elijah before he was told to do so for the double annointing. Simply doing will bring blessing. Our God is one of action. When we act upon the word daily we will not be caught off guard when God calls us to a specific action.

  19. Elisha did twice as many miracles as Elijah. People would have said that Elisha was a super star. Yet he simply followed the man of God. He learned from Elijah, walked with him, talked with him, an served him. This is the greatest honor anyone in the ministry could hope for. To be close to the man of God, learning from him, and watching him live for God. The mantle was passed to Elisha because he watched Elijah, and knew how to wear it.

  20. In this chapter, we see the importance of following your leader/pastor/authority that God has placed in your life. Elisha knew that he couldn’t afford to let the man of God out of his sight. His request in verse 9 MSG reads….”When they reached the other side, Elijah said to Elisha, “What can I do for you before I’m taken from you? Ask anything.” Elisha said, “Your life repeated in my life. I want to be a holy man just like you.” I want to be like Jesus; therefore, I must stay close to the man of God.

  21. Elisha had the submission factor. We went to the men’s conference in Dallas this last time and it was shared by Bishop Foster that one of the biggest reasons that Pastor Watts has been so successful in his ministry is that he knows
what submission really is. The more I submit the more I am blessed. When I pull back my blessings start to deminish. The lesson I see is to completely submit to the man of God and do what is asked of you. Doing this will bring forth an anointing that you cannot achieve on your own. If Elisha was out preaching his own message instead of fallowing Elijah then he would have missed the blessing. I want to hang on for the ride and see what God does

  22. Elisha’s commitment to the the Lord and to the Man of God is something that ensured his success in the work he was called to do. He performed twice as many miracles than Elijah. He multiplex himself through commitment.

Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. -1 Corinthians 11:1

  23. Our Personal Double Portion

…..but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits. Daniel 11:32

12 I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, if anyone steadfastly believes in Me, he will himself be able to do the things that I do; and he will do even greater things than these, because I go to the Father.
13 And I will do [I Myself will grant] whatever you ask in My Name [as [b] presenting all that I AM], so that the Father may be glorified and extolled in (through) the Son.
14 [Yes] I will grant [I Myself will do for you] whatever you shall ask in My Name [as [c] presenting all that I AM].
    John 14:12-14 AMP

Thank you Jesus for the Holy Ghost!

  24. We should have the same spirit about Jesus as Elisha had toward Elijah. We should want to be close to him at all times and never leave his side. Our lives would be so much better if we that were true.

  25. Though a fiery chariot descends from heaven, Elijah is apparently not caught up in it. Rather, he goes up to heaven in the whirlwind itself. A fitting exit for a prophet who was himself a kind of whirlwind in life, calling down fire from heaven (1Ki 18:36-38), parting river waters (2Ki 2:8) and suddenly appearing and disappearing (1Ki 18:9-12,16). Elijah seems to be an over the top, above and beyond personality, reminding me a little bit of Paul. It would seem as though Elisha’s response is a bit excessive, he immediately gets a double dose of Elijah’s spirit. 42 youths- likey in their late teen bullies display lack of respect for anyone especially their elder man of God. They don’t just look antagonistic, but are actually going out of their way to pick a fight. Despite their taunts, it looks unlikely that Elisha is spurred to action because he is personally offended. More likely, he is disturbed by their by their rejection towards prophetic authority, and of the God he represents. He responds in the same way we should all respond to bullies…he put it in Gods hands. He calls upon to Lord, and God deals with the matter as he sees fit- by sending a clear message about the consequences that await those who disrespect the Lord.
